49ers vs. Texans Pre-Season Live Blog

Welcome to the third and final pre-season game of the 49ers. The plan this evening is to play the starters for more than a few series before entering a two week wait to begin their season. The Trey Lance era is upon us!

My question is will the 49ers work Mason in with the starters or will they attempt to hide him?

*Broncos signed Gemmel, another 49ers linebacker.

  1. Unfortunately not going to get to watch this one live. But go 49ers!

Will watch the replay tonight (Oz time) and post my post game thoughts after that.

  2. Cheers, Scooter_McG!

I'll be watchin, with a wide eye, a few things:

    - I heard that Jeff Wilson Jr is going to get extensive playing time tonight. I didn't get to see him on my 1 training camp attendance so I'm really curious to see if he's finally all of the way back from his knee injury he suffered during last years offseson, and I am hoping he's back in his healthy 2020 form (112 yards, 6.6 avg, 3 TD's VS the Patriots and 183 yards, 8.3 avg VS the Cardinals) getting out out of chair at the team's facility last offseason. If he looks like he's all of the way back, then I feel amazingly confident about this year's stable of RB's!

    - Jason Poe! I'm hearing he's got a legitimate chance of taking Banks starting LG job right out from under his nose and frankly I am both excited, and scared to death about it.

    - DeMo Lenoir! I always figured he was destined to end up in the slot, but I've heard he's got a real good chance at being the first guy off the bench on the outside. Ambry just hasn't had a good camp, so I'll be watching him as well, and I'll be watching the Nickle CB spot as well, because that's been one of the best battles all summer, between Womack and Knight!

    - Purdy VS Sudfeld. This has been a good battle as well, which is kind of surprising because Purdy is a rookie. But Purdy has considerable more overall starting experience than Sudfeld if your including college stats (Purdy has almost twice as many starts), and frankly I prefer Purdy's skill set over Sudfeld's coming off of the bench. I still maintain that the 49ers will not expose Purdy to waivers, unless he lays an absolute stinker of an egg VS the Texans.

And then it's just keeping an overall eye on the other backup battles at TE, WR, RG, RT, OC (notice I didn't list anyone along the DL? The 49ers have an embarrassment of riches in the DL!)

  5. The Niners OL is laughable tonight! Piss poor pass blocking, below average run blocking. I would say "Eh, no big deal, it's only preseason", except it's been my biggest concern going back to free agency, and then the draft, and then early in camp. McKivitz is definitely not a starting caliber RT. Aaron Banks is not a starting caliber LG at this point, and I have no idea what's happening at Center! What a shame to do this to Trey Lance.

    1. The 49ers defense is going to need to be playing at a level "as advertised" early in the season, until they can get this porous OL straightened out.

  6. I almost can't even watch this OL right now.

  7. OK, get Trey Lance out of this game. He's gonna get hurt playing behind this OL!

  8. OK I've seen enough. One of the worst 12:26 of offensive line play I have seen from a professional football team in some time. These guys can't do anything. Aaron Banks is HORRIBLE! So is Jaylon Moore! McKivitz isn't much better.

Kyle and John need to get this fixed ASAP!

    Go 49ers!

  9. Defense finally has toughened up. I don't like Sermon at all. O-line is what I expected.

  10. Oh no! Why are the playing Jordan Mason? Everyone is going to know how special he is now. SMH!!

    1. It's a battle between Sermon and Mason for the last spot. Mason runs so much better than Sermon.

  11. I was done posting for the night, but I had to pop back on and and just say how shocked I am about just how poorly this offensive line has played tonight. This was my biggest worry this year, but I'm not sure I've ever seen a 49ers OL play this poorly! They are getting absolutely whipped up front on almost every offensive play. I was boasting just yesterday about this 49ers team's championship winning formula, but until I see this OL fixed, and I'm sure exactly how it gets fixed right now, I'm taking my championship talk back. And I'm not going to double on my 49ers SB wager until I see this thing get fixed, because it's been THAT bad!

CB Samuel Womack III is something special though!

  12. Kyle Shanahan's #1 job this offseason, was to make sure his OL was good enough to protect his young QB and this is what he came up with?

BASICALLY THREE ROOKIE INTERIOR LINEMAN, and a broken down starting RT? With Jimmy Garoppolo eating up $27M worth of dead caop space?

This is an utter embarrassment! 6 penalties on the OL in ONE HALF? This OL is literally one Trent Williams injury away from not being good enough to make the playoffs! I feel sorry for Trey Lance. So sorry that I just texted my nephew in FL and told him to hold off placing any futures wagers on the 49ers until we see some kind of tangible improvement on the OL.

Here's the 2nd half, and they can't play any worse on the OL so at least there's that!

  13. I tell ya, at the moment Purdy might be the best QB the Niners have. I would feel very comfortable with him starting the season. That's not going to happen, but it should.

  14. Once the IOL is sandwiched between Williams and McGlinchey, they'll have no choice but to level up.

    5. Kyle Shanahan: The "Great Enigma"

I'm kind of a student of history, or history buff if you will, because back when I was young, I found the subject interesting, even while I found most of the other subjects we were being taught in school to be a major bore! So I've known a lot of people, and I've read about, and learned about countless people that have shaped the world's history over generations.

And so I feel pretty confident in saying that Kyle Shanahan is the smartest, most genius person when it comes to American Football than perhaps here ever has been. He is certainly the smartest offensive football mind that I have even had the pleasure to observe over my lifetime.

An yet somehow, despite possessing an almost savant-like knowledge about a very complex sport, Kyle Shanahan simultaneously never developed an ounce of common sense \ 'ka-men-'sents \ , which is defined in the English dictionary as: "a good sense and sound judgment in practical matters"

And such is the "Great Enigma" of Kyle Michael Shanahan!

    6. Banks, Moore, McKivitz, and Justin Skule are ALL scrubs who shouldn't be playing on an NFL roster.

And how about the undrafted OC out of TX A&M, – Keaton Sutherland? He might be the worst OC I have ever laid eyes on. Did you know that this kid finally got a few regular season snaps with the Dolphins back inn 2019, and was promptly cut two days later, because he almost got his QB killed? Did you guys know that, other then those few meaningless snaps that got him promptly cut, the only thing he's done in the NFL is get waived 2 other times without ever seeing the field? And this is the guys who came in and backed up Brendel who himself, no offense intended because he's been almost good enough, but the guy is 29 years old and he's never earned a NFL regular season start.

This is the RAG-TAG OL that Kyle chose to protect his valuable franchise QB who pretty much has to succeed if this team is hoped to remain relevant over the next five years? A young QB who is taking his first snaps as the designated starting QB of the future for Kyle's 49ers?

      INEXCUSABLE!

    7. Brendel gave up zero pressures.

    8. Oh did he? I haven't seen the PFF scores out yet, I'm afraid to look, lol. Honestly, that performance from the 49ers OL as a group last night was .... oh boy, I can hardly put it in words.

But yah, maybe he's just a late, late bloomer? I think I've been fair to Brendel though. I think Brendel has been playing at an acceptable level so far. He's definitely been better than Brunskill who obviously hasn't played much Center because he can't snap a football in shotgun. But it's important to remember that Brendel is a first time starter, and he really hasn't been matched up with most of the best NT's and 0-Techs in the league yet, so he's a major question mark for sure. I am hoping for the best with him, but I can't gloss over his lack of playing time for a 29 year old Center.

But did you see how poorly Banks, McKivitz, Moore, Skule, Southerland, Mills, I mean it was almost across the board.

But I'm going to take some time off now, and regroup myself, because last night was kind of depressing for me. I know that sounds over the top, but it blew a giant hole in my confidence bubble for this season, especially early on here as this OL shakes it's out.

Thanks Razor, I'll be back after the 30th.

Just spoke to #49ers GM John Lynch and he said it’s very likely that Jimmie Ward will go on short term IR for the first four weeks of the 2022 season but it’s not completely 100% confirmed yet.

  18. What an absolute sh_t show that was. Like you said Razor, they lost every ounce of momentum they had built up thru the first two games. Normally I would more easily blow off a preseason game, but this was such an epic failure, and what was almost their entire starting OL unit getting push around like a bunch of sissy's or even worse - with defensive linemen blowing thru the Niners OL completely untouched. Usually you see something like that happen once a game ... but I saw it happen like 7 or 8 times tonight, and I don't ever remember seeing that before!

I can't say for certain that that was the very worst offensive line performance I've ever seen, having watched just about every single Niners' game since 1983, but I can say that it's the worst performance I can ever remember seeing, over all of those years! It was that bad!

How in the world is this current OL constructed like it is, while the 49ers have $25M worth of salary cap space burning a hole in their pocket? And my goodness, God help them if Trent Williams ever ends up missing time, because I see 4 other "starting" offensive linemen who don't look anywhere near ready to face any of the league's better defensive lines. It felt to me like the only time the OL wasn't either committing a holding penalty or committing a false start, they were either getting blown back at the point of attack, or they weren't even getting a hand (or even a finger) on the defensive player. It was unbelievably bad!

I'll give you guys my individual OL grades tomorrow, because I am that disappointed.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oh, and here's another thing that was really wasted tonight - because the OL was sooo bad tonight, it was almost impossible to evaluate any of the other players, many of which are on the bubble.

How could Kyle truly evaluate Jordan Mason and Trey Sermon, when they are getting tackled before they can even secure the handoff. And how do you evaluate the backup QB battle, which seems extremely important considering 4 out of 5 of your offensive linemen can't protect your Q? Neither QB had any time to go through their progressions tonight, but at least Brock Purdy is mobile enough (he's extremely mobile) to run around like a chicken with his head cut off and make a some impressive off-schedule plays, because this OL is not good enough to give Nate Sudfeld the time he needs to make a play.

What a shame. The OL should have been the number one priority with a young, inexperienced QB who you are trying to develop. Not making pass protection, or run blocking, a top priority, when you have $25M being absolutely wasted in the "ether of QB's from days gone by", simply because you refuse to admit that you mishandled your opportunity to get something of value in return for the QB that you haven't even wanted on your roster for going on 2 years! UGGH!

Go get OT - ISIAH WYNN from the Patriots, that would at least be something, even if he's a classic tweener (OT/OG).

  20. The best quote of the night, though, came from Shanahan after Silver asked the coach if he could draw any conclusions about Lance from the quarterback's play against the Texans.

"Dude, I've got nothing," Shanahan responded. "It was a dumb-ass preseason game."

People are freaking out...wait till after four or five games and then make the assertions. We all knew the O-line was going to be a work in progress just as Lance is.

    1. That true undercenter, but the OL has been getting whoopped almost every day in camp. I don't know how it's going to drastically suddenly improve that much at this point, unless they infuse more talent, but that's always tricky this late in the game.

I posted last week that John Lynch needs to pull the same kind of magic he did in 2017, when the traded for their ironman LG Laken Tomlinson, right before the start of the season. The problem with that is, the 49ers have at least 3 starting OL positions that need to be completely overhauled, as far as I can tell.

How do you do this to your young, franchise QB who needs to get off to a good start?

This is FO mall practice, although I don't put all of the blame on JL, but how do you go into a season with an unexperienced QB who has the weight of the world now on his shoulders because of the way the handled Jimmy (news alert, he's still on the fricken team), and say to yourself, "it makes since to filed FOUR new starters along the OL"? Because we all knew McGlinchey was a MAJOR question mark coming off of his serious injury, yet they let Tom Compton walk to save pennies on the dollar? I could tell how concerned CHRIS FORESTER was at the start of camp, so what they do, signed a washed up RT (Mills)? And I am sorry but, the 49ers literally played musical chairs with the OL, and even had the gall to call it "musical chairs", since day 1 of training camp!

And you watch, TREY SERMON is going to make this team, and either Hasty or Mason, who are both much better fits, are going to get claimed away off wagers! GRRRRR!

  21. And just so you guys know this isn't some Johnny come lately" hot take from a fair-weather fan - I was SOUNDING THE ALARM about the 49ers OL, and their odd plan for the OL, on this blog since mid-MARCH!

And now Trey Lance is getting absolutely destroyed, and gets to continue to get destroyed on social media by all of the Jimmy stans who have somehow convinced themselves that Jimmy is the 2nd coming of Joe Montana, and all of the "told you so" crowd who plan to make Trey Lance's life as miserable as possible until he proves he's better than Jimmy (which of course won't happen overnight), and it's not even Trey's fault. Tom Brady would have looked worse behind the 49ers joke OL last night, and Trey at least went 7-11 without an INT, and his overall preseason number, while it's only a small sample, are really really god!

I suppose a lot can change between now and November, but I really, really feel bad for Trey Lance, and the way he's been put into a seemingly impossible position to start his career!
