49ers vs. Vikings Pre-Season Live Blog

Welcome to game 2 of the pre-season for the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers plan tonight is to play mostly backups in this game. The opportunities will be there for those who choose to sieze them, and I'm excited to see who steps up their games.

  1. Questions I am hoping to find some clarity today:

    - Is there still hope for the 49ers Offensive Line, and do they have a viable starter at RT?
    - Has Danny Gray supplanted Jennings as WR #3, or is it going to be situational?
    - Ty Davis-Price in comparison to Jordan Mason?
    - Nate Sudfeld in comparison to Brock Purdy?
    - Nick Zakelj in comparison to Dohnovan West?
    - Demo Lenoir in comparison to Ambrey Thomas?
    - Austin Mack in comparison to Tay Martin?
    - McCrary-Ball in comparison to Flannigan-Fowles?
    - Jordan Mills in comparison to Colton McKivitz?
    - Kevin Atkins in comparison to Akeem Spence?
    - Ross Dwelley in comparison to Tyler Kroft?
    - Troy Fumagalli in comparison to Tanner Hudson?
    - Taylor Hawkins in comparison to George Odom?
    - Qwuantrezz Knight in comparison to Demo Lenior?
    - Ka'dar Hollman in comparison to Ken Crawley?
    - What's the plan at Safety with Ward out?
    - Where does Tariq Castro-Fields play?
    - Can Jason Poe contribute sooner rather than later?
    - Nate Sudfeld in comparison to Brock Purdy?
    - Have the 49ers ST actually improved?
    - Is Qwuantrezz Knight the clear #2 Nickle CB behind Womack?

    1. Most of those won't be answered in a PS game, they get answered in practice. But I do want to see if the starting OL can hold up against the starting Vikings DL.

    2. Banks/Brendel/Burford are all playing with McGlinchey/Williams out?

    3. I get that. I should have specified that this is a personal list - an opportunity for me to get in on the evaluation. I love taping these games and breaking down the film, even if the 49ers coaches have a different perspective.

    4. In my mind, these are some of the biggest questions, and closest roster battles in terms of filling out the depth chart, which is an important piece of the puzzle, IMO.

    5. Brendel isn't playing. They got Sutherland at Center tonight.

    6. I guess I should have included Sutherland on my list. I feel like he was on the outside looking in, but with Brunskill's injury ..... I look forward to watching everything that happens from the OC position today!

  2. Nick Zakelj hopefully gets reps at center today, other than that I have nothing else to look for. Like Scooter says not much is going to be learned today, the learning is in practice.

    1. Like Shanny said, he likes to see how you perform under the big lights. Some shine, like Womack while others tend to shrink.

  3. Are we to make anything from Sermon being expected to get the bulk of the carries tonight even though he dinged his ankle?

    1. I think it means he's a 3rd round pick and he's seriously on the bubble, so they need to figure out which way to go with him, and they need to make a decision, and it's one of the tougher decisions they will make this year, IMO.

I would have put him on my list above, but I heard he probably wasn't going to go, and so I assumed the ankle injury was worse than it is.

      Go 49ers!

  4. With so many starters not expected to play from both sides, this game really won't be that meaningful.

    1. I mean, both teams won't have 27 players playing tonight, the vast majority of which are starters or key role players.

This is what teams used to do with the 4th PS game. It really just shows these games aren't necessary or particularly useful. Nice for some guys to get some tape out there, but that's about it.

Regarding Sermon, if he is expected to get the bulk of the carries tonight despite being dinged, this is an audition ahead of the 49ers looking to trade him.

    2. That's my thought as well. Sermon is trade bait.

      Delete
    3. It's meaningful for the backend of the roster, but yah, most of the front end of the roster has already been decided.

      Delete
    4. I doubt it is even meaningful for the back end of the roster. We will learn more today from who is inactive and who starts than we will from how guys play.

  5. Holding out McKivitz tells me he's the clubhouse leader for that swing OT. He very well may be starting week 1 at RT.

  6. These are the only 49ers starters to see action today:

    DT Javon Kinlaw
    LG Aaron Banks
    RG Spencer Burford

    1. And it is telling that they are playing. Kinlaw not getting the vet treatment in this game, given his injury history and with nearly every other starter sitting, isn't a great sign regarding how the team feels about his development. While having the two young OGs play suggests the team is a bit nervous at the position, wanting to see more out of them and feel they need as many reps as possible.

      Delete
    2. Like I said a few weeks ago, Kinlaw is strictly a 1st and 2nd down specialist, and that's fine with me.

      Delete
    3. That's fine. He can do that without needing to play today. The fact hr is playing is concerning.

  7. Chock one up for GEORGE ODEM! He's a wildcard for me. Great ST player, can he play FS at a high level in this system?

    1. Right place right time. Rest of drive he looked a bit lost in coverage.

  8. Drake Jackson made an impact back end of that drive and was responsible for the pick.

  9. TDP has to just hit that. Wrong time to dance and try and bounce it outside.

    1. Agreed. Kind of surprising because he's been a no-nonsense runner in camp. I guess it's a good teaching moment.

  10. Having said what I said about Kinlaw, I do believe he does have the potential to be a dominant 3-down DT at some point!

  11. If I'm Kemoko Turay I am feeling nervous about my prospects of making the 49ers 53. Played deep into game 1, didn't see the field the first 3 drives today. Behind Bosa, Ebukam, Omenihu, Willis and Jackson.

    1. From what I understand, Turay is a lock to make the roster., and I believe Bosa feels the same way. We'll see.

      Delete
    2. Strange then to see how he's getting treated in these two PS games. Maybe they are putting tape out there on Willis and Omenihu in hopes of a trade.

      Delete
    3. I agree with that, Scooter_McG. I would be shocked if he get's cut, but maybe I'm wrong.

      Delete
  12. Jennings has been playing himself out of the #3 WR, and Sermon is in danger of being cut!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Banks and Burford still the starting OGs. Quite surprised. Banks appears to be pretty comfortable out there, but Burford has had a few issues.

    1. Actually, I think a lot of the interior issues today are due to Sutherland.

      Delete
    2. Sutherland is the rotting smell from the interior.

      Delete
    3. He was awful game 1 against 3rd stringers. Now getting an opportunity against backups and he unsurprisingly is even worse.

      Delete
  14. I didn't expect anything out of Sutherland, but Omenihu has been a major disappointment for me tonight!

    1. How so? He played well aside from one snap where he got caught inside and allowed the RB to get the edge.

    1. We are now seeing why they should be hiding him.

      Delete
    2. Yes, they should have hid him. If Sermon makes the team over Mason, simply because of his draft position, then shame on the 49ers! I'm not basing this on today's game either. Mason has been a standout since day 1, and he's a 230 lbs RB with enough speed to play in this system.

Please Kyle, don't be political about this.

      Delete
    3. He's an amazing addition to this offense if he makes this team, and he better!

      Delete
  16. I liked what I saw as far as explosion from Kinlaw on that sack by the endzone. Looks like he's fully healthy.
