Swooping In?

  1. Good one! I wonder if anyone fell for it.

    1. Have to be a 2024 5th, given the Falcons don't own one in 2023.

  2. Doesn't this feel like Dan Sileo is trolling fans at this point? I thinks he's already removed this tweet, btw.

I'm not going to act like Jimmy doesn't have value, because of course he does. In fact, I could see 3 or 4 teams making a run for him if he becomes a FA in the near future. But Atlanta is in a rebuild situation, so a 2nd and 5th from a team that already has an outrageous amount of money invested in the QB position (including a boatload of dead money), and a desperate need for an infusion of young talent?

I would be absolutely shocked if Atlanta was even one of the top teams bidding for Jimmy's services if he hits the open market.

  3. That sure would be a risky gamble! Jimmy isn't even fully recovered from shoulder capsule surgery, which means he's going to be at a considerably higher risk of injury for at least a couple more months, even if he passes as physical and is fully cleared.

I just don't see why the Falcons would want to have two of the most unreliable QB's in the league in terms of injury history, in addition to a record amount of dead cap space, if they are in rebuild mode, which they are. I know they made a serious run for Watson, but Watson is star AND young enough to build around. I feel like Jimmy needs to go to a team that is in must-win-now mode, like Carolina and maybe the NY Giants.

At this late stage, I think the Giants are really the only viable trade partner. The 49ers eat $10M, and the Giants send Tyrod Taylor (2 year / $11M) in exchange for Jimmy. Jimmy can come in, learn the system without being thrown to the wolves, and then he could push Daniel Jones while giving them a chance to see him up-close and personal, giving them a legitimate option to replace Jones at some point either later in this season, and the upper hand in signing Jimmy to an extension between now, and 2023.

That would give the 49ers the perfect QB to back up Lance, and it would free up an additional $11.5M in cap space this year. That's about the only trade that really makes sense for both teams involved, in my opinion.

    1. Mariota goes down and you got trouble with Ridder as your starter.

I really don't see the 49ers having any desire to pay anything toward Jimmy G's contract or trading for another quarterback. It's gonna be the Purdy and Sudfeld show through pre-season.

    2. I agree that a healthy Jimmy>Mariota, but not by a country mile. The pre-ACL tear version of Garoppolo probably was. But Jimmy isn't even healthy, is he? And the Falcons have already started training camp.

Sure, the Falcons QB situation is far from ideal, no question about that. But why spend a bunch more money at the position, and draft capital, if you are a bad team, and are in the early stages of rebuilding the entire roster? They already have over $50,000,000 in dead cap space, or something crazy like that, just at the QB position alone, and you think they should add another big price tag and give up draft picks for what - a chance to finish 6-11 instead of 4-13?

    3. Mariota has yet to show he's a starting quarterback in this league, and I doubt there's more than 20 starting quarterbacks in the NFL that's better than Jimmy G.

    4. Jimmy's got that elite quick release that can compensate for lack of time and mobility. He would have Pitts, London and Patterson to get the ball out to. I think he'd take that.

      Delete
    5. Patterson is a Jimmy G type offensive weapon, I'll give you that. I was kind of hoping the 49ers would sign him during FA, but I like the additions of Ray-Ray & TDP even better.

  4. Matt Lombardo

One more team possibly in the Jimmy Garoppolo market. From long-time #NFL personnel evaluator this morning ...

"Don't be surprised if the #Falcons jump in. You aren't going to know about Desmond Ridder for two or three years, at best, and they can't afford to wait that long."

  5. Wait a minute - doesn't the phrase "Don't be surprised if the Falcons jump in", imply that they haven't jumped in yet?

    What is going on here?

And by the way, isn't this the same DAN SILEO who "broke" the news a couple weeks ago that "the Buccaneers and 49ers were currently working on a trade that would send Jimmy to the Bucs to back up 'his buddy' - Tom Brady - this year, and then presumably take over as the starter next season?

This guy is a little ridiculous, don't you think? He's clearly trying to act like he knows more than he actually does.

    2. Oh gotcha. Sorry about that, it's all getting a little hard to follow.

I do hope the best for Jimmy and the 49ers moving forward.

And I sure hope whatever happens with Jimmy, happens soon! Because all we should be focused on going into this week is the 49ers other dynamic QB - Trey Lance, and the plethora of ultra-talented football players who are littered all over this entire 49ers roster, including ST for a change, lol.

    3. Sileo is a fraud, shouldn't even waste a second of ones life listening to what he has to say.

  6. If the 49ers get offered a 2nd and 5th and don't need to eat any of his salary they should jump at it.

  7. Hey guys, do you expect to see the Pistol offense (formation) being a big part of the 49ers offense this season? It was for the Redskins in 2012.

"The quirky formation has enabled Washington to field the NFL's top-ranked rushing offense (167.2 rush yards per game) with two runners, Alfred Morris and RGIII, ranking among the top 25 rushers in the league."

    1. I think read option will be a bigger part of the offense, which is commonly run out of pistol.

    2. For sure, but I found this part of the article regarding the Redskins 2012 Pistol offense to be the most fascinating:

"For all of the attention paid to the Redskins' running game out of the Pistol, Washington has tormented opponents with explosive passing plays in recent weeks. Griffin has repeatedly connected with Pierre Garcon, Santana Moss, Aldrick Robinson and Morgan on vertical routes following play-action. Griffin's outstanding poise and precision in the pocket definitely helps the 'Skins succeed in this area, but it is the outstanding design of the play-action passing game that stands out the most to me when watching the tape."

    3. But I agree with you about the zone-read (or read-option, whatever you call it), and I think the 49ers are going to run a lot team into submission this season, kind of like they did in the 2019 postseason, in the leadup up to the Super Bowl.

Interestingly, Football Outsiders ranks the 49ers RB group as their best offensive group, and I have a lot of respect for Football Outsiders. I haven't seen Davis-Price as a pro, but I have a feeling that the 49ers have 4 legitimate NFL RB's, and this Jordan Mason kid could make 5, which is crazy. Add Lance to that group, and Kyle/Lynn designing the scheme, it seems fair to assume that he 49ers will lead the NFC in rushing this season, as long as they stay relatively healthy, I'm confident in that. With their pass-rush, and improved secondary, I don't see them playing from behind very often.

    4. Oh, and Kyle Juszczyk of course! Can't forget about Juice!

      Delete
    5. One thing is for certain and that's when he's running those read options he'll be doing it as the starting quarterback, and not in spot play where the defense can key on him running the ball.

    6. Great point! Kyle Shanahan's run game is going to give defensive coordinator's PTSD this season. There's going to be a few DC's who ponder early retirement after leaving Levi's Stadium, for fear of losing their jobs.

    7. It's funny, the running game is actually my biggest concern with the team this year. It's such an integral part of Shanahan's offense, and is at its best when they can hit explosive runs. Last year it wasn't until Deebo was back there that they started getting those regularly.

As good an athlete as Lance is, he has some trouble getting the corner and when he gets horizontal. But the team doesn't really have anyone to get the corner if Deebo isn't being used that way.

    8. I remember it like it was yesterday. Week 3, MNF, 3rd and goal from the 1, :07 left on the game clock, the 49ers absolutely needed a TD. Trey Lance takes a direct snap, and get's to the corner, crossing the goal line basically untouched, making it look easy in the process. I think Trey is faster than he gets credit for, and he's also a naturally gifted runner. He's not Lamar or Kylar, but he doesn't need to be. He's certainly fast enough to freeze the backside defender, and that's a gamechanger in terms of fakes, whether it's the zone-read or bootlegs (even RPO's in some instances). It's the legitimate threat of Trey pulling the ball back, and just picking up yards at a 6-7 YPR clip, that will change the entire run-blocking dynamics. Even Jimmy had that effect prior to his knee injury. Post injury, the backside defenders simply ignore him as a running threat, and crash down on the RB without any hesitation. Plus, Trey Lance is a wizard at the mesh point. He's really, really good handling the football of zone-read concepts, and RPO's. I think we're going to see the 49ers running a lot more often out of shotgun and Pistol formations, and I think we are going to see a significantly higher percentage of runs VS passes as well.

This all adds up to the 49ers offense leading the league in rushing this season, moving ahead of the Ravens, Browns, Eagles, Colts and Titans!

    9. Lance looks quicker than fast to me.

      Delete
    10. Agreed. Quick, shifty, and fast enough. I think.

I do have small concerns about the interior of the OL again though, but more concern about pass protection than run blocking.

      Delete
    11. He had a number of plays moving laterally where he was unable to outrun the defender to the edge as well. He's fast when he gets a head of steam but to consistently get the edge he will need space on the outside. I think this is why in college most of his big runs came as a result of running through the middle.

      Delete
  8. Not saying the concern over the IOL isn't warranted but I think it's a bit overblown. Brendel was hand picked by our OL coach, and convinced Shanny that he's ready as he studied behind a Hall Of Fame center. Lance and Brendel have been developing their chemistry behind the scenes for over a year as they enter the year as presumptive starters. Lots of teams have proven that you don't need top tier offensive linemen across the board. In the 49ers case, they've got the best LT in football, plus investments of 1st and 2nd round draft picks. I think this line has more than enough talent to get the job done this year.

    1. If Brendel is a good as advertised, I think the OL will probably all come together just fine. I just wonder about a 29 year old Center who has a total of 6 regular season snaps under his belt. Rarely do you see guys break out at the age of 29, but I do have all the respect in the world for Chris Foerster, so maybe Brendel is one of those rare exceptions.
