Shanny's First & 8 Plan

Come out of the gate all guns blazing the first 8 games to avoid the situation they found themselves on the back half of last season.

Plan is to allow Lance to grow as the team insulates him. Expects Jimmy to report to camp for his physical and playing for another team before the season begins.

Extremely confident Deebo deal gets done and he's a 49er for years to come. Thinks both sides will be happy but doens't have a timeline.

Shanny, Lynch, Lance and Aiyuk all met up in San Diego, and BA jokingly brought up arm fatigue. Both Lynch and Shanny didn't get the joke because they don't pay attention to social media. A teaching reminder for the youngsters.

Shanny thought the loss to the Rams came down to 3 plays. 2nd and 1 and the Rams defense blew up two consecutive runs, which forced the 4th and 2 punt; followed by the dropped Int.

Doube D's Los Gatos favorite eats nearby.

    1. For a true qb evaluation, I've always believed it takes 2 full season's worth of games to make a determination. Most of the media are in it for clicks, and so I don't expect a long wait to answer your question.

  2. I have to give Kyle props for the answer he gave to TK in regards to the sleezy arm fatigue "reports" (as if every QB who has ever played organized football doesn't experience some degree of arm fatigue / soreness at one time or another). In fact, Kyle said all of the right things in the interview, but I'm not buying the notion that Kyle had no idea what Brandon and Trey were referencing on Instagram. Unfortunately this libelous "report" went well beyond click-bait, and remained mainstream for multiple weeks on end.

I do think there are a lot of young QB's who would be negatively effected by these relentless, reckless media reports, but Trey Lance feels like he's built differently than most. He seems to be absolutely unflappable, and I think he's going to use all of this baseless criticism to fuel his hostile takeover of the NFL! As long as Kyle accepts the growing pains and allows the young man to be himself, and I think he will, it won't be long until NFL media does a 180 in the way they cover Trey Lance.

    2. You've got the anonymous (probably Rams players) reports from NFC West representatives that claim they hope to face Lance instead of Jimmy G. To me, it's a signal that somebody is worried Lance might actually be pretty good and they're trying to play mind games.

      Delete
    3. Oh, I thought it was an executive or coach, but a "representative" could definitely be referencing a player as well. Good catch! In that case, Jalen Ramsey is my first guess. He's a trash-talker.

I do think the Rams have a lot of respect for Jimmy, because the 49ers have owned them in the regular season with Jimmy at QB. But yah, this reeks of head-games. Trey might not have much of an NFL track record, but the absence of starts doesn't prove anything other than Trey being a young QB going into his 2nd NFL season.

It's also a cheap shot because you can't prove a negative, right?

"The proving a negative fallacy is committed when an attempt is made to justify dogmatic statements of disbelief or skepticism. It is a fallacy of closed-mindedness."

    4. IMO, the key to the 9ers 2022 success is the O-Line, especially the Center position, and to a lesser degree the OG positions. If the 9ers can establish KS's inside zone running game, It'll take the pressure off Lance and the 9ers should be a playoff team.
NOTE: Brunskill may end up playing Center, or the 9ers could
sign a F/A Center. (JC Tretter if the 9ers can sign him for a reasonable price).

#49ers WR Deebo Samuel reported to training camp, per source.

Not a major surprise after Samuel was present for the spring, but the versatile WR is seeking a new extension.

IMO, the 9ers need to get JG's $25.5 salary off the books so they'll have the cap space to sign Deebo.

      Delete
    2. No. His 2022 cap number will not change drastically. Look at AJ Browns contract extension, he's sitting on just 5.6M cap hit this year vs a 40M dead cap, Deebo's cap number this year is 4.8M with a dead cap of just 900k, so obviously when they extend him in the next few weeks his cap hit will probably move up a couple mil just as AJ's did (AJ was drafted later than Deebo so his contract should have been less) but they don't need Jimmy's 26M off the books to get it done at all.

As it stands, according to OverTheCap, the niners have just under 5M in cap space, so they can extend Deebo at any point w/o any other moves it seems, tho not sure if all rookies have been signed and how their deals will impact the cap as none are 1sts or early 2nds.

      Delete
    3. If / when JG passes his physical, the 9ers are no longer on the hock for the $7.5 Mil injury guarantee. If JG's contract is not on
the 9ers books on Sept. 11th, the 9ers pick up $25.55 million of cap space.....Basically the price of Deebo's new contract.

If Kinlaw's knee is finally healthy, it should keep the opposition from double teaming Bosa and help free Bosa up to sack the
      QB.
Armstead should also be good for a 9 - 10 sack season and if Ebukam can continue to play the way he finished the 2021 season, the 9er defense could be as good as the 2019 D.

    4. This almost feels like 2020 when the expectations were Super Bowl or bust until injuries decimated the roster. The big difference imo from that team and this team other than the obvious qb position is DEPTH! This is the deepest team they've ever had imo.

    5. Have you guys got a good look at the chiseled Trey Sermon lately?

Holy moly this kid looks like he's been working hard this offseason. Sermon is obviously not the next Joe Williams. And I think Sermon is going to surprise a lot of people this season. He's got talent, but the step up last year, and the adjustment required, were a little too much for him to overcome, although he certainly flashed week 4 vs Seattle, when he rushed for 89 yards on 19 carries (4.7 AVG). I think he's going to look a lot more comfortable in year 2, especially if the 49ers run more inside concepts, and especially zone-read (shotgun and pistol).

Sermon has already caught Kyle's eye, and that's a good sign. I am soooooo looking forward to the running back camp battles, especially once the pads go on sometime next week!

I am very relieved that both John and Kyle finally came out and said "IT" - and I think it's clear that the first day of the general roster reporting to training camp is the day it officially became unsustainable to continue to pretend that they would be open to Jimmy returning to finish out his contract with the team (even as a backup?) this season.

    1. We've got people like Lynch and Shanny that know and can relate to players, while Jed has their backs; ensuring Paraag keeps his mouth shut.

      Delete
    2. Yah, for sure. Parag obviously won't be getting an invite to Deebo's contract extension party, but it seems like Kyle and Deebo maintained a positive relationship through all of it, and that's the most import relationship.

As for the QB situation, the Rams "representatives" tried to throw a grenade into the 49ers locker room at the last second as players reported, in a last ditch effort to sow discord within their biggest threat to a repeat, IMO, but to no avail! And at the end of the day, John and Kyle said all of the right things at the opening pressor, and the 49ers locker room remains as thick as thieves!

I especially appreciated these particular quotes from Kyle: "This is Trey's team and that's nothing against Jimmy, WE MADE THAT DECISION A YEAR AGO and we're going with that and we're not going to mess around with that ANYMORE. And I don't think we really have messed around with that much (but let's be honest, they have), but once we made that decision, we did. And Jimmy understands that fully. He's (Jimmy's) a big guy and it's nothing against him, either. That's a business decision and that's what makes it not awkward. Yeah, it's tough but THERE'S CONTRACTS AND STUFF THAT YOU HAVE TO DO (and a salary cap)!"

This is exactly what needed to be said! Do I wish Kyle had said these things months ago? Yes, but what's done is done, and this sets the record straight on day 1 of camp, so there is absolutely zero ambiguity in regards to the QB position, and now it's all systems go!

      Delete
    3. IMO, the Rams "representatives" are whistling past the graveyard. When healthy, the 9er D will have a lot of QB's
      (like Stafford), hearing footsteps!

      Delete
    4. Oh, for sure GEEP!

With the addition of Charvarius Ward, and a couple really impressive looking draft prospects to shore up the secondary, Ambry Thomas coming off of a really impressive second half of his rookie season (plus hopefully a healthy Verrett), if the 49ers can find anyone to take double-teams away from Nick Bosa (who will apparently be playing in a contract year), and like you say - they can stay healthy, the 49ers defense is going to give opposing QB's night-terrors!

And that include Stafford who, as good as he is, can be rattled because we've seen him get rattled over the years.
And that's doubly true for Kylar Murray! Murray was full on shell-shocked by the Rams pass rush in last years postseason, which isn't surprising for a guy who can hardly see over his lineman when he's in the pocket, and is also apparently allergic to studying game film.

Even the future HOF QB - Aaron Rodgers, is in for a rude awaking, even though he must be getting used to being absolutely battered by the 49ers defense during Shanahan and Lynch's tenure!

QB Jimmy Garoppolo was officially cleared after undergoing his physical with the #49ers this afternoon. He does NOT open training on the PUP list after undergoing shoulder surgery on March 8.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That's good news, but I don't know that it means a whole lot until Jimmy is healthy enough to show off his arm, and compete for a potential roster spot, right? This feels like a formality at this stage because I am sure the very last thing the 49ers, or Garoppolo would want is for Jimmy to land on the PUP at this point in time.

I do have a question though for you guys though:

What happens if Jimmy aggravates the shoulder and/or suffers a setback while he's auditioning for a potential trade - would that then qualify him to receive his injury guarantee via an INJURY SETTLEMENT? And would a setback during try-outs (auditions) potentially further complicate an already complicated trade?

      Delete
    2. He won't throw before he is traded.

      Delete
    3. The plan is for Jimmy G to throw on the sidelines. Rebuilding and ramping up the arm in a manner consistent with the medical staff. Passing the physical means the 49ers are no longer on the hook for that $7.5 million.

      Delete
    4. Right, I did some more digging, and I get that part of this. The 49ers are no longer on the hook for the $7.5 injury guarantee, as long as Jimmy remains healthy between now and when his contract becomes fully guaranteed on 8/30. But what happens if he reaggravates his surgically repaired shoulder during a ramp-up in training camp, even if he's limited, and working on the side, and/or throwing for another team?

Do you see what I'm saying?

For instance, are private workouts for potential trade suitors something Jimmy can even do at this point? And if not, are we saying that any trade suitor would have to take a leap of faith? Is a physical examination, imaging and whatnot, the only thing a trade partner can go on at this point? Talk about a leap of faith!

By the way, if you read John Lynch's quotes yesterday in particular, there is no question in my mind that he fully understand just how difficult it's going to be to trade Jimmy between now and when he's fully healthy and able to show he's healthy on a football field. He no longer sounds like a GM who is confident that the 49ers will even find a team that is willing to take on the risk as is, even without giving up anything of significant value.

I think the more relevant question now is: Will they hold onto Jimmy past 8/30, in hopes of trading him before the deadline?

      Delete
    5. If he were to reinjure himself ramping up, the 49ers as I understand it would not be on the hook for anything. I could be wrong.

      Delete
    6. I believe this to be correct as well.

And if cut they wouldn't be on the line for that amount either. This is a reason why those who said the niners should have cut him before yesterday were way off.

He's going to be here for a while, people just need to move on. He's not limited SF from extending Deebo and he's not impacting practice, Trey or anything. The only ones with Jimmy on the brain are the hates.

      C: Jake Brendel/Daniel Brunskill
      RG: Spencer Burford

    8. It's definitely not that cut and dry, Razoreater.

Jimmy is still technically under contract as long as the 49ers hold his rights under contract, right?

Technically, he's under the 49ers control until they cut him, right, because he can't just walk away and sign with another team until the 49ers release him. So how can he be both under the 49ers control contractually, but not in terms of injury. I just don't think that's right. They can't just control his rights contractually, and then if he gets hurt before they release him, say - oh well, tough luck. At the very least he would be eligible for a an injury settlement, calculated at a portion of his salary divided by how much time it takes him to recover.

Per overthecap.com: "The CBA protects players who are injured performing football activities. Essentially if you are injured your salary is protected, but it is only protected to a point. Remember there are various extents of injuries that occur in the NFL. An ACL tear is devastating and will cause a player to miss the entire season. That is a major injury and the player will earn his entire Paragraph 5 salary for the year. But many of the injuries that land a player on IR are minor and are classified as such when placement on IR occurs. Those players, as soon as they are healthy enough to play football, are released from the team. Once released they may not re-sign with their former team for the duration of the season."

      Why?

"The bottom line is if the team was that concerned with his injury issues they would have released him long before he had an opportunity to get injured again."

      Delete
    9. After passing his physical, he has no injury guarantees. I'm pretty sure the 49ers don't owe him a penny if he reinjures himself.

      Delete
    10. This is one of the reason for Injury guarantees. Injury guarantees supersede injury settlements, and one of the main benefits of writing an injury guarantee into a contract, is that it allows a team to release an injured player before he passes a physical. If there is no injury clause, then an injury settlement is produced. Injury settlements obviously become a much bigger deal for expensive players, like QB's, which is why not all NFL contracts have injury clauses built in.

      Delete
    11. You are right Razoreater, once Jimmy passed a physical, the 49ers are then able to release Jimmy at that point without owing him a dime. But the 49ers aren't doing that. They are holding Jimmy rights under contract, until the very last minute before the rest of his contract becomes fully guaranteed. If we get past that point and he's still on the roster, his entire contract becomes guaranteed.

Do you think the NFLPA would overlook this issues when writing a collective bargaining agreement? Of course not. That would be incredibly unfair to the player.

      Delete
    12. All he will be doing is rehab, and won't be strenuous. The "throwing" he is doing is part of his rehab program. If he reinjures himself doing that he should never have cleared his medical. It's very low risk while they continue to shop him around.

      Delete
    13. Yah, I guess it is what it is. We'll see how it plays out with Jimmy, but whatever happens, the 49ers appear to be loaded with talent! The only question mark for me is the OL ,but they've been developing some offensive lineman for a bit now, so I think it will work itself out.

      Delete
    14. But you understand my point, right Scooter_McG? The $7.5M injury guarantee kicks back in again if he get's hurt again before they release him. He had to pass the physical before they released him otherwise they would have been on the hook for the $7.5M if Jimmy doesn't get healthy, or the 49ers would be responsible for the difference between the $7.5M and what he signs for somewhere else.

But they still can't risk letting him participating in live training camp, and certainly not in pads, because if he get's hurt again before he's released, the 49ers are on the hook again for probably quite a bit, depending on the severity of the injury.

It's going to be hard to trade Jimmy at this point, because it's such a complicated, and somewhat unique situation.

      Delete
    15. Yes, it is a risk, albeit a low one. But the team clearly still believes there is potential to trade him.

      Delete
    16. Agreed, but it's going to be tough at this point.

I also no longer feel like they are going to hold onto him until 8/30. I think they have set a date, with the hopes that something might still materialize that obviously hasn't yet (still waiting on the DeShaun Watson suspension), maybe Aug 10th or 15th, something like that, and then they will grant his release under the premise that they want to do the right thing, so that he has a chance to find another gig before the start of the season. And I do think John and Kyle mean well, and I don't think there is animosity between them.

In the meantime they will do everything single thing within their power to keep him healthy between now and then!

  11. IMO, Kyle's interview on TK's podcast is the best interview (or second best) interview he has given. Very clear views, crisp, no-nonsense answers. He's tanned, rested, and ready to attack the season.

His restaurant views were interesting (gave TK an opportunity to yakk about his dinner-with-Jed incident). I get together with a couple of buddies about once every season to watch a Niners game at Double D's. The food and beer selections are pretty decent and the place is always humming. Not the greatest viewing, though. Have a hard time picturing Kyle hanging out there. But I guess he lives in the hills not far from there and it's the neighborhood sports bar.

  12. I sure hope the 49ers are patient with Jason Verrett! As long as he can be healthy by the second half of the season, I'm good with him staying on the PUP. Imagine having a CB with his skillset (a healthy Verrett can supply elite production at all 3 CB positions) supplying late-season reinforcements. I mean, are you kidding me?

That's how deep this roster is, guys! It's almost overwhelming! Kyle is 100% right - Trey Lance is inheriting Kyle's most talented roster as a head coach, and this IS NOT HYPERBOLE!

I've never predicted this before, but if Trey Lance is who I think he is, this team has a very good chance of not only securing the No. 1 seed, and that isn't a dig at Jimmy who I do respect by the way, because I think they might have been able to be elite this season with Jimmy at the helm.

The difference is the SALARY CAP - and the ROOKIE PAY SCALE! The 49ers have an honest-to-goodness opportunity to emerge this season as the nest NFL dynasty, the SECOND NFL Dynasty mind you, of this storied franchises history! And that's something that has, as far as I know, never been done before in the NFL, during the salary cap era! That's why Trey Lance is so important! That's why Trey Lance was drafted! And that's why it was so important for Kyle to announce that this is now Trey Lance's team, and I am soooooooooo relieved that he did!

In fact, this is the happiest I've been during the Kyle Shanahan/John Lynch era, and the happiest I've been as a 49ers fan since the glory days! I'm genuinely getting choked up! These last 30 hours have been absolutely glorious, guys! I hope that doesn't sound silly, but I've been waiting exactly 355 days for Kyle to announce that this is Trey's team, and I couldn't be any more excited as a fan!

So GOOD FOR KYLE and JOHN! And honestly, they've both earned it!

    1. By the way Razoreater, I've always thought that the NY GIANTS made the most sense, and gave the 49ers the biggest opportunity to trade Jimmy, although I still think Jimmy makes the most sense as a FA, in my opinion.

I think Jimmy would be just the right guy to come in and push Daniel Jones, because the Giants have a big decision to make with Jones. Why not bring Jimmy in to compete, and use Jimmy as a gauge? If Jones can beat out Jimmy, then great, that gives the Giants a solid baseline to say hey, we have a guy who we can win with, right?

The beauty of Jimmy Garoppolo is that he's the quintessential locker room guy, and that's a big deal for teams that are missing that kind of QB.

I think Jimmy can make an absolute fortune in the NFL. A Ryan Fitzpatrick 3.0 if you will.

The absolute beauty of Jimmy as a football player is that, even though he's frozen in time as far as his development, he does have a fairly well-rounded skillset, and you won't find a better person to galvanize team chemistry.

So Jimmy has a role to play, it's just not as a $27M QB who can be depended on, and expected to carry a team, and/or push a team over the top.

Here are my top 4 teams who I believe will pursue Jimmy once he hits the open market as a FA:

      1) The NY Giants, for all of the reason I mentioned above

      2) The Cleveland Browns, but only if Watson is suspended for an entire season

      3) The Seattle Seahawks. They obviously have both a familiarity with Jimmy, and a need for a proven starter (especially one who knows how to win). That said, I'd be shocked if the 49ers trade their 5 year starter to a division rival

      4) The Miami Dolphins. Just connect the coaching dots.

    2. By the way, I do not think the Houston Texans are interested in Jimmy. I really believe - from everything I know, that the Texans are extremely optimistic about Davis Mills. It's really that simple. And what's not to like? Plus, he seems to be a locker room leader, and just like Trey, Mills is going into the 2nd year of his rookie pay scale. Yes, as a 3rd round draft pick (#67) there is no 5th year option to pick up, but Davis Mills showed them everything they wanted to see as a rookie, and then some.

      Delete
    3. Why wouldn't the 49ers trade Jimmy? Stop with the F/A non-sense. Sure, OTHER TEAMS would rather he be a f/a, but we are not on a blog for other teams and the niners couldn't give a rats A about whats best for other teams.

Fact is the niners want (need) something in return for JG. They got him for a 2nd, he got them 2 NFC Champ & 1 SB appearance, a great ROI however they aren't letting go of a top 15 (when healthy) QB for nothing. If they trade him they get whatever they get for him, a 2nd would be perfect as youre basically a wash on the pick given plus all the success. A 3rd should be the least they'd accept.

If they can't swing a trade (which they will) they can very easily eat his deal this year and then when his contract expires get a 3rd comp pick for him.

Cutting him nets them nothing. They don't get a comp. They don't get another teams pick. Nothing.

All it takes is for 2 teams to have interest and they trade him. If Cleveland and NYG show even the slightest of interest, whichever team is highest on him makes an offer. This is why his agent is working the trades, niners want a trade so let his guy put in the work for it. Get two teams (or more) interested and it happens. Houston and Seattle are also two teams who could enter the mix. I'd have thrown Detroit in as well except Goffs contract is an albatross of greater proportions than JGs (31M cap/41m deadcap..screwed either way).

Niners are totally willing to play the long game. Wait a few weeks, even into the season to see what teams are not happy with their QB or if one goes down with injury. You know if a freak injury hit Brady or Tannehill that those teams would come running to trade for Jimmy.

Just put him out of your mind, he's of no concern to anything the team is doing now or in the future. And what happens if Trey tears a knee or something during TC and Jimmys still on the roster, you know Kyle will get his ass out on the field the next day.

      Delete
    4. The 49ers would love to trade Jimmy, that's not the issue. The issue is that there needs to be a team that's willing to take a big gamble taking on the final year of Jimmy's contract, and Jimmy needs to be a cooperating party in a trade if he's going to be required to restructure. This has nothing to do with what the 49ers would like to do. The 49ers would have liked for Jimmy to get surgery the day after their conference championship loss, but that didn't happen till way over a month later.

The primary issue now, is the shoulder and a final year of his contract that doesn't come anywhere close to matching where Jimmy's shoulder is at from a physical standpoint right now. Nobody even knows exactly when he'll be ready to compete for a roster spot. The other thing is that general consensus is that Jimmy likely has more value on the open market, than he does as a FA, and General Managers throughout the league, don't believe he will be on the 49ers 53 man roster by the time September comes around.

      Delete
    5. Plus, aren't you kind of saying that Jimmy is now a $27M insurance policy? Do you think that's good business, and a good way to build a sustainable contender? I sure don't, and I don't think the 49ers do either.

Plus, it's also not what's good for Trey's development at this point, or team chemistry. It's time to cut the cord!

      Delete
    6. Actually, let me clarify that it's not quite time to cut the cord. We are a couple of weeks away from that, and I can see the 49ers exercising a little more patience than I have. Like I said,

I have August 30th as my rock-hard deadline, but I also have 21st - which is a day after their 2nd week of the preseason - as my most likely deadline, although he could be released even sooner than that, in my opinion.

      Delete
    7. EMJay, if the 49ers eat ~$25M this year just to get a comp pick they are being silly. They have a lot of big contracts coming up - the salary cap space is worth way more than a future comp pick.

      Delete
    8. Scooter_McG, do you feel like the 49ers have already won that trade? I think they have, and I think most teams around the league feel like the 49ers have already won that trade.

The 49ers were in QB purgatory back when they made that trade. Jimmy came in and lit a fire underneath the entire team. Their 5-0 finish at the end of 2017, knocking off the AFC's #1 seed in the process, changed the entire trajectory of Kyle and John's tenure in shocking fashion! It's just really unfortunate that Jimmy blew out his knee week 3, but that doesn't mean he wasn't the key catalyst in turning the franchise around. Plus, they did win an NFC Championship, and came close to winning a Super Bowl with Jimmy, and miraculously made it to another conference championship last season.

That makes the initial trade a win at this point, regardless of whether they get a 3rd or 4th round pick, which let's be honest, it's looking more like a conditional 5th round pick at this point if they can get anything at all.

And I am no longer at all interested in talking negatively about Jimmy at this point. I think he was good for the 49ers, but the NFL is a cut throat league, and Jimmy's successor is ready to take the baton and run with it, at a fraction of the price.

      Delete
    9. Yes, the teams desire to trade JG has nothing to do with recouping the 2nd they gave up for him. 5 years on I am sure they feel that was good value.

It's about believing he is too good to give away for nothing, and a desire to recoup some of the capital they gave up for Lance.

      Delete
    10. Well, I shouldn't say fraction of the price. When you factor in how much draft capital they spent on Trey, and convert that to actual dollars (and cap space), the fact is that Trey is also just too expensive to continue to hold a clip board. And since 2013, it's a new era, because as long as teams spend a certain % of their cap space, they can roll over the remaining cap space to the following season.

      Delete
    11. Exactly, Scooter_McG. In a perfect world, getting draft capital and/or another player, in return for Jimmy at this point, after all that Jimmy has done, would be the icing on the cake - and something that would really add to JL's legacy!

We'll see if he can pull it off. I was thinking if it was going to happen, they would have a couple potential suitors lined up and just waiting for Jimmy to pass a physical, but "crickets" 2 days after Jimmy passed a physical, would suggest otherwise.

      Delete
    12. Its literally the 2nd day of practice for most teams. Did any QB go down injured yet? No...well thats why you haven't heard anything. Most teams go into camp with the guys they have and then after a few weeks of practice things shake out.

Trust me, you'll see a qb go down, Watson will get a year suspension and NY will see Jones is still the same dude and you'll have teams on Lynchs' phone.

      Just wait.

      Delete
    13. OK eMJay, that's fair, I can't argue with that. I have said all along that an injury could change things. But rooting for an injury is bad karma, so I'm trying not to get too caught up in that - knock on wood.

I do hope you're right, eMJay, but at some point you have to be honest about where they are at the moment. If there was a strong market for Jimmy, which you would think there would be if he's a "franchise" caliber QB, wouldn't you think there would at least be some kind of framework already in place, contingent on Jimmy's physical? I mean, why do we even need to wait for an injury if Jimmy's better than at least half of the guys who are slated to be starting QB's in 2022?

    1. Hey guys, do you think the 49ers keep 5 or 6 WR's on the initial roster? Because I am predicting 5 WR's and an extra TE (J. Mathews).

I hear Jordan Mathews is up to 238 lbs now (222lbs last season), and is smoking LB's, and we know he's a very polished slot receiver, so he can provide quality depth at both position groups.

      WR's - 5: 1) Samuel 2) Aiyuk 3) Jennings 4) McCloud 5)Gray

      TE's - 4: 1) Kittle 2) Dwelly 3) Mathews 4) Woerner/Fumagali/Kroft

For those keeping score of #49ers practice Thursday from afar:

Trey Lance 7 of 15, one INT

  16. Just as I thought. So far Brunny has taken all the reps as the #2 center. Seems thus far they have Burford to thank for that. He's your starting RG.

  17. I see much hasn't changed with the Niners since the last time I checked in, JG is still on the team and Deebo remains unsigned. I see Ford got released so that's a good thing. Hope injuries are held to a minimum during camp.

  18. So for all to see, just checked and prior to DK's deal his cap hit for 2022 was 4.3M. Lets see what it is the full details of his extension are, which includes 30M signing, 58.2 guaranteed and 72M overall.

This can give us an idea of what Deebo's caphit will be after he signs since his currently is sitting at 4.8M.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It reportedly includes a $30M signing bonus, so even if they include voidable years at the end to pro-rate that out, it'll be $5M in cap hit from the signing bonus alone. Likely then vet minimum salary, so probably a cap hit of around $6M for 2022.

      Delete
    2. My understanding that at least part of hold up is that Tory Dandy has convinced Deebo that a 3 year deal is the way to go, and we all know that Paraag is not a big fan of 3 year contracts. It's interesting because AJ Brown is another one of Dandy's clients, and he signed a 4 year deal with the Eagles.

There are also a bunch of other similarities between these 3 WR's, besides their agent. They were all 2nd round picks ion 2019, with Deebo going early in round 2, AJ going close to the middle of round 2, and DK somehow lasting until the end of round 2.

But I do think that DK's deal makes it more likely that we see Deebo's deal come to fruition within the nest few days, and I will be stoked because I think Deebo is the most valuable offensive player on the team, outside of the newly crowned Trey Lance.

      Delete
    3. A 3 year extension for Deebo makes a lot of sense from the point of view of age when due his 3rd contract. He's currently 26, will be 27 at the end of the season. A 3-year extension and he will just have turned 30 when his 3rd contract is due. Any more than a 3 year extension and he will be into his early 30s by the time he is up for another contract.

      Delete
    4. I agree. I can definitely understand the reasoning behind that for Deebo. I also think it makes good sense on the 49ers end. I'd be happy to front load a 3 year deal for Deebo, because I do question his long term durability. But I'd rather pay him enough so that he's comfortable lining up anywhere on the field, because that's one of the things that makes him so special, and so valuable.

I've know I've said this more than once, but I'm really impressed with the way john and Kyle have handled this situation. I'm glad they didn't just wash their hands by trading him. And I'm glad they stuck to their guns in doing this the same for Deebo as they dop for their other star players.

I do think they need to get this done by early next week, because they need to do everything in their power to help support Trey Lance, even if that means spending a few extra dollars to get Deebo back onto the playing field.

  20. I can't wait to start talking about what we are seeing and hearing in training camp. I know it's early, and there is only so much you can conclude when guys aren't even wearing pads. But I do have a few small quibbles, even though the positives outweigh the negatives, and I am incredibly bullish on this team!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I just wanted to bring up one more point about Jimmy, and that's it. It's time to stop beating a dead horse and watch this play out here, because we are getting close to the end game.

Mike McDaniel! Doesn't Mike McDaniel know Jimmy G just about as well as anyone on the planet? McDaniel is now the HC of the Miami Dolphins who have a pretty talented offensive roster. The Dolphins were also big spenders this offseason, so they clearly think McDaniel can his the ground running this season. Having said all of this, their are a lot of smart people who truly question whether Tua Tagovailoa is the guy. He hasn't been aweful over the first couple years, but he hasn't necessarily been very good either. He's still an unproven commodity compared to a Jimmy Garoppolo. And when it comes to Mike McDaniels offense, Jimmy would run circles around Tua right now in terms of running that offense.

Tua also still has at least 2 years left on his rookie contract, and it could be 3 once the Dolphins decide they are comfortable picking up his 5th year option - but they haven't yet. The Dolphins also still have a nice chunk of salary cap space, something like $16.5M, so they have more than enough to bring Jimmy in to compete with Tua. Sure, they have Teddy Bridgewater on a 1-year, $6.5M deal, but that's less than $10M between Tua and Teddy combined, and it seems reasonable to assume that Jimmy knows McDaniels offense a lot better than Bridgewater as well.

So my question is: Why isn't Mike McDaniels all over making a move for Jimmy Garoppolo at this point? Why wouldn't the Dolphins have been ready to pull the trigger on a trade the minute that Jimmy passed his physical? Wouldn't that be a lucky break for McDaniels, to have an opportunity to bring in an experienced, Super Bowl caliber QB who knows his system like the back of his hand, and has also proven to be a great locker room leader, and a willing mentor to young QB's? Even if it's on just a 2 year extension?

    1. OK. I do respect that you are sticking to your guns, eMJay. I am feeling a little nostalgic now when it comes to Jimmy. I do appreciate the way he handled the situation last year.
