49ers officially have given Jimmy Garoppolo’s agents Don Yee and Carter Chow permission to seek a trade, sources said. Garoppolo has been cleared to start practicing, per team source; 49ers still are expected to exercise caution with him this summer.
Lol! PR at its best. He's had permission to seek a trade all offseason. 49ers just want the message out there that JG is ready to clear a medical check.
ReplyDeleteFun times.😂
DeleteIt's obvious that we have 2 different camps (Garoppolo's camp / the 49ers camp) leaking 2 wildly different timelines, to 2 of the most well-connected NFL sources on social media.
ReplyDeleteThis actually strongly backs up my opinion that Jimmy's camp (Don Yee), who I believe want to be released by the 49ers ASAP, are leaking information to Ian Rapaport, while the 49ers camp, who want to buy as much time as possible between now and 8/30, are leaking to Adam Schefter.
This does not bode well for those who feel like there will be a viable trade market for Jimmy.
I came to this conclusion because I don't see any reason why the 49ers would want to leak the information that Jimmy won't be fully cleared for at least another month.
DeleteTherefore, it seems to me that Ian Rapaport's "source" would have to be doing Jimmy's bidding, while Adam Schefter - who is a well known source of the 49ers FO, would be the one doing 49ers bidding.
And Schefter is a well known source of the 49ers FO.
49ers just signed DT Robert Nkemdiche. Camp body insurance.
ReplyDelete1st round pick in 2016. Maybe he can prove his draft worth all these years later.
Delete49ers have signed DT Robert Nkemdiche. I will be honest, I really don't understand this signing. Team already has a couple too many bodies at DL.
ReplyDeleteHurst/Ridgeway/Givens/Nkemdiche for the right to back up Kinlaw/Armstead. If they keep 4 DL and 6 Edge.
DeleteKocurek's fingerprints are all over this surprise signing. Low risk, high reward for a player that likes to penetrate in this system.
ReplyDeleteYah, signing Robert Nkemdiche only becomes a red-flag for me if he actually makes the roster. From what I remember of Nkemdiche, he's an extremely poor run defender. One thing I sure hope is that this doesn't signal a setback for Kinlaw.
ReplyDeleteHis strength is on first and second downs as a run defender. He's not a pass rusher. His signing has nothing to do with Kinlaw, whose been fully cleared.
DeleteWhat are you talking about?
DeleteFirst off, Javon Kinlaw is not a pass rusher.
Secondly, Robert Nkemdiche's best year was his 2019 season with the Cardinals, when he played in 10 games, and had more sacks (4.5) than run stuffs (4). And do you know how many sacks Javon Kinlaw has in his entire 18 games career? 1.5 sacks.
I'm not saying Kinlaw has been particularly good at anything yet, but I think a healthy Kinlaw has a lot more potential as a anchor in the middle against the run than Nkemdiche, Ridgeway, and Hurst COMBINED!
The 49ers better hope Kinlaw can be an anchor the middle on 1st and 2nd down, that's for sure!
DeleteIn fact, here are Robert Nkemdiche's "Biggest Concerns" coming out of college, according to PFF:
Delete• Struggles overall in the run game, will get destroyed by double teams
• Was better against the run in 2015, but still a huge question mark compared to other interior defensive linemen
• Can run right at him, may never hold up as an every down interior defensive linemen
• Struggles to disengage in the run game if he doesn’t win with initial quickness
• Was a disruptive pass rusher, but has to finish better and turn pressures into sacks
Robert will be competing against Hurst, Ridgeway and GIvens to be one of two DT's backing up Kinlaw and Armstead on 1st and 2nd downs.
DeleteWell, the 49ers haven't come out and announced that Kinlaw's role will be as a primary run stopper - yet - because he was the 12th overall pick, but the writing is clearly on the wall with him, especially when you look at the depth pieces the 49ers have signed on the DL.
DeleteThe 49ers have a serious lack of run defending DT's, so if it's not Kinlaw, they are in trouble in my opinion, unless somebody surprisingly comes out of nowhere, and that's not Nkemdiche. He's a bust against the run.
Kevin Givens is 285 lbs soaking wet. His biggest question is his ability to hold up against the run, as he tends to get swallowed up if he doesn't win with his initial burst. Ridgeway is not a stout run defender and neither are Hurst or Nkemdiche. Those are facts.
And we know Armstead's best quality is as an interior pass rusher. Don't get me wrong, Armstead does everything well, but he's better as a penetrating DT than he is as an anchor because of the way he is built.
So if it isn't Kinlaw, then the 49ers could have some serious deficiencies against the run this season.
BTW, I don't hate this signing at all. I do trust Kocurek like nobody's business. I just don't think Nkemdiche is that guy. But it's a cheap deal, low risk, with at least some upside as a pass rushing interior DT, so that's just fine.
DeleteHurst, Ridgeway, Givens and Nkemdiche are all here because Kocurek wants them as his rotational DT's on 1st and 2nd down. That is a fact.
DeleteDon't forget, the 49ers also have DT - Kevin Atkins (307 lbs) out of Fresno St, going into his 2nd season, and the 6th round pick they drafted - DT Kalia Davis (310 lbs) out of Central FL, who is currently injured, but could conceivably return later in the season.
ReplyDeleteI don't envision Davis playing this year. Probably why Nkendiche is here.
DeleteYah, I'm not a doctor, but I could definitely see Davis, who is built as a prototypical run stopping anchor, being added before mid-season if the Niners need him, provided he doesn't suffer complications to his ACL recovery. His ACL injury occurred in early October, so he would be over a year removed from the injury, by the time he's eligible to be added to the active roster. 10 months is sort of the general recovery guideline, 11 months is on the conservative side. However, you could be right about Nkendiche taking his roster spot, at least until then. But unlike Nkendiche, K. Davis is tailor made to stop the run. Extremely low center of gravity (6'1"), low pad level and terrific leverage. Over 300 lbs of bulk, and strong like an ox. He and DJ Jones are the same guy - they are basically clones, and Jones had 15 run stuffs last season!
DeleteJohn Lynch: "Kalia Davis, he’s a guy we see a lot of D.J. Jones in. That type of explosion. Had an ACL injury. We’re going to take our time to make sure Kalia is right, so I’m not sure if he’ll be ready for the start of the regular season. He could be a PUP guy, but [we] really just love [him]. He fits exactly who we want to be as a defensive tackle, and we became very fond of him through the process."
John Lynch misspoke though. Kalia Davis would actually be an NFI roster designation, but the rules are essentially the same, meaning Davis can begin practicing with the team after 6 weeks, eligible to be added to the roster after week 8.
Davis was the only player I got right in my mock draft. He reminded me of Jones, but I don't think they plan on using him this year.
DeleteGood job selecting Davis, I like the pick, and he may very well be red-shirted for the entire season out of an abundance of caution, especially if they don't feel like they have a pressing need for him at mid-season.

Browns don’t have interest contrary to reports. To my knowledge, the teams are the #Texans, #Seahawks , #Lions, #Falcons and #Dolphins

Jimmy G's trade partner odds:
ReplyDeleteCleveland Browns, +250, 28.6% implied probability
New York Giants, +375, 21.1%
Houston Texans, +400, 20.0%
San Francisco 49ers, +800, 11.1%
Seattle Seahawks, +1000, 9.1%
No Team, +1000, 9.1%
Interesting that the odds makers think he is a better chance of getting traded than released... and also a greater chance of remaining a 49er than being released.
Delete"I would say right away, the Cleveland Browns do have interest in Jimmy Garoppolo, there's no doubt," Greg Papa, the 49ers' play-by-play radio broadcaster, said on KNBR's Papa & Lund show (h/t KNBR). "They are just waiting for what's going to happen to the guy they gave $230 million fully guaranteed to. ... I have great sources on this that the Browns have shown interest in Jimmy Garoppolo." "Right away, Cam Marino states the Browns don't have interest contrary to reports," Papa continues. "I think it's false. I know it is. I know they have interest. They've looked into Jimmy Garoppolo, and they're waiting. I'm here to tell you they do have interest in Jimmy Garoppolo, contrary to what Cam is saying. They do."
DeleteNot familiar with Papa's intell authenticity but he sure comes off as pretty confident.
I could actually see the Browns trading for him to play while Watson is suspended, and then assuming Watson is able to return mid-season, the Browns actually trading JG again before the trade deadline if a team in the playoff hunt needs a QB.
DeleteThe above comments were from me btw - working from a temp laptop and forgot to sign in.
DeleteHappens to me everytime I clear my cookies.
DeleteActually, the oddsmakers believe the betting public believes Jimmy stands a much better chance of being traded than released. These odds are not about what the oddsmakers themselves believe is likely to happen, and that's a huge distinction, because the oddsmakers' #1 job is to hope the betting public spreads their bets evenly, which essentially guarantees the sports books make money no matter what happens. And since the 49ers have insisted they will not release Jimmy because he's simply "too good" to release, even if they may be willing to eat half of his contract in order to get a 2024 conditional 4th or 5th round pick in return, just to salvage the situation, even though they would have likely been better off releasing him months ago, these odds actually make perfect sense for the average betting public. Insiders? Not so much.
DeleteThe Cardinals just set a very bad precedent for their franchise. I don't think it's going to end well for the Arizona Cardinals!
ReplyDeleteLet's face it - Kyler Murray has some serious talent, but as talented as he is, he's also extremely inconsistent. To make matters worse, his reaction to putting on one of the worst playoff performances by a QB that I have ever witnessed in my lifetime, was to point fingers at everybody else but himself. And then he starts acting like he's the kingmaker on social media, demanding a near record-breaking contract while he still had 2 years left on his contract?
DeleteIs that the guy you would want as the face of your franchise?
What happens the next time a really good player demands a new lucrative contract with 2 years left on his contract? I know that the Cardinals were in a tough spot in the short term, after all, they are responsible for drafting the kid and treating him like a savior before he had really even earned it, but then to just completely bend over and capitulate like they did, without hardly any push back, after the way Kyler Murray finished last season and then treated his teammates and coaches?
I'm hard on Jimmy because I can no longer get past his on-field deficiencies, but to be honest, I felt much more comfortable giving Jimmy the bag after 5 games, than I would giving Murray who, unlike Jimmy, is neither a team player, or a team leader. To give him $160M guaranteed simply because I am afraid he's threatening to take the upcoming season hostage? Like I said, I don't think this will end well for the Cardinals, and as a 49ers fan, I guess I should celebrate it.
At least Deebo is legitimately due a new contract, and he's coming off one of the greatest duel-threat performances in league history. What has Kyler Murray really done other than being the #1 pick, and showing flashes of brilliances, sandwiched in-between spotty quarterbacking and immature personality outbursts?
DeleteThat's the risk and problem most clubs face with their "franchise" signal callers (and have been facing for years). It's the highest paid position, so if you commit to your QB you are committing a large chunk of your cap for many years. And most QBs don't really "prove" themselves to be true franchise QBs in the first 3 years of their NFL career - only a small handful are that good that early to know for sure.
DeleteSo after 3 years you either run the risk of paying them and getting it wrong, try and get them to play another year or two under their current contract to get a better feel for what they will become (sometimes works, but doesn't sounds like Murray was interested in such an arrangement), or move on and run the risk of seeing them become a franchise QB elsewhere.
That's so true, Scooter_McG. It's a tough situation because there simply aren't enough top level QB's to go around.
DeleteI could be wrong, but something tells me that, no matter the ups and downs, Trey Lance is always going to try to do the right thing and lead by example, and that's something I think we will really appreciate as Niners fans over the next 5 years.
I'm trying not to "spam" your wonderful 49ers bog, but I have one more thing to say about the Jimmy G situation that I think is important now.
ReplyDeleteGolden reps. That's the difference between last years training camp and this years training camp for Trey Lance. Extremely excited to see that difference pay off come September. Go, baby, go!
ReplyDeleteQuestion (Y or N): If Jimmy Garoppolo wanted to, he could wave his injury guarantee ($7M) in order to facilitate a trade right now, to Cleveland, or some other team, right? Especially if the acquiring team is willing to give Jimmy, I don't know, let's say $8M guaranteed as a base, plus a chance to make another $8M-$10M in incentives if he ends up starting a certain number of games this year? Jimmy could do that, right?
ReplyDeleteI ask this question because, isn't it true that if both the 49ers and Jimmy were willing, he could be traded right now, before he even passes a physical? Y or N?
The injury guarantee isn't holding up a trade. That is holding up a release.
DeleteI believe any team can choose to sign (or trade for) a player that won't pass a physical if they want to. Just doesn't happen as it is a risk to the team signing/ trading for the player.
Yep, they only need to pass their physical to play.
DeleteBingo!
DeleteI am glad we can all agree that, unlike what David Lombardi and others are preaching, Jimmy passing a physical isn't what's holding up a trade at this point. Certainly Jimmy has the power to waive that if he wants, especially if there is a team that is both appealing to Jimmy, and has a need for a starting QB, who is willing to give up asset(s) for Jimmy via a trade. I mean, the sooner Jimmy latches onto a new team, the better for both him, and his new team.
Interesting answer. I always thought that contracts could be modified via "amendments", so long as all parties agree to the modification(s).
ReplyDeletewww.legalzoom.com - Contract Amendments: "A contract amendment allows the parties to make a mutually agreed-upon change to an existing contract. An amendment can add to an existing contract, delete from it, or change parts of it."
