Steady As She Goes

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo remains on schedule in his recovery from shoulder surgery and timetable for throwing, per source. The expectation has been Garoppolo will throw over next few weeks (early July, per Kyle Shanahan) and that plan is still in place.

  1. A QUESTION: How much of JG's salary will the 9ers have to eat, to get another NFL team to trade for him?
    A) $ 0 - $3
    B) $ 4 - $6
    C) $ 7 - $9
    D) $ 10 - $12

    1. Somthing tells me they've had a wink, wink deal in place once Jimmy is able to demonstrate full recovery. I don't expect the 49ers to have an appetite for any portion of his salary.

    2. Yeah, I don't think they'll take on any of JG's salary to facilitate a trade unless it returns a very high draft pick. What would be the point?

As to whether they have an understanding in place with another team I don't know. I think more likely is they have an understanding in place with JG that if a trade isn't forthcoming before camp they will release him.

Other than the Panthers and Browns (If Watson gets one year suspension without pay), Who can afford JG's $25 Mil salary?

    1. Not sure the Panthers can afford Jimmy. Cleveland has plenty of cap room for his salary, and they had to know when they alienated Baker, and signed Watson that they'd need a stopgap inbetween the two.

To follow up, per source, Garoppolo's shoulder is feeling good, feeling sound. Hopes for a "quick resolution" once he shows he's able to make all the throws, which source says "won't be a problem."

    1. Could interpret that a few ways, but I think what Giardi is saying is that his source is hearing from JG's camp that he'll be right to make all the throws without a problem, not that the quick resolution won't be a problem per se. My guess is everything Giardi is reporting there is from the JG camp, not the 49ers camp.

    2. Agreed and I don't think we'll be waiting long before his camp releases video of Jimmy slinging it around.

I agree with, Giardi is reporting from JG's camp, not 9ers camp.

Spotrac: NFL teams 2022 salary cap:
1 Cleveland Browns: (cap space top 51) $41,268,365
2 Carolina Panthers: (cap space top 51) $24,563,588
NOTE: Panters cut a player to meet JG's $25 Mil salary

  5. Can't see any team trading for Jimmy G. High likelihood he will be released, so why pay top dollar in salary plus possible draft picks prior to release. Once released, he'll never get $25 million. Hope Seattle doesn't pick him up.

    1. If he's released it won't be until the last possible moment. Shanny already said if he's cleared and on the team they'll practice him through training camp.

    2. Would the 49ers really risk being on the hook for Jimmy's entire 2022 salary, if he were to say - re-injure his shoulder, or sustain another injury during training camp? I don't think there is any way the 49ers would risk that, therefore I think the deadline for Garoppolo's release is the start of training camp.

      Delete
    3. Wouldn't think so and therefore Shanny's statement is a piece of circumstantial evidence to suggest a wink, wink deal has been in place and will be consummated once Jimmy demonstrates the ability to throw without encumbrance.

      Delete
    4. In other words, Shanny doesn't expect Jimmy to be on the team by training camp. 4 weeks until training camp. He'll be throwing in 2 weeks. I expect a trade to happen the last 2 weeks of July followed by a deal to lock up Deebo.

      Delete
    5. OK, gotcha. That makes sense. Fingers crossed that Jimmy can pass a physical!

  6. Understand your concern about Seattle picking him up. That said, I'd rather that we face Garoppolo than Wilson, so it wouldn't bother me if we had to face him. It really was amazing that we almost made the Super Bowl with Jimmy at the helm. Not a bad qb, but one dropped interception late in the game against the eventual SB champs? Whom we beat how many times in a row? Shows the strength of the 53 and the coaching.

  7. If Deshaun Watson's suspension lasts into 2023, how does it change the calculus for Cleveland?

On Tuesday, Deshaun Watson will appear before NFL disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson, a former federal judge, to sort out a league response, if any, to over two dozen accusations of sexual misconduct involving massage therapists Watson hired.
The Wall Street Journal on Saturday reported that the NFL is seeking an “indefinite suspension” that would sit Watson for “no shorter than one year.” Numerous other media outlets have confirmed that thinking, a sign that the league wants it publicly known how seriously it wants to punish Watson.

  8. If Deshaun Watson is suspended for the full year, who’ll play quarterback for the Browns?

    THIS COULD WORK?
    * Some have suggested that the Browns should trade for Jimmy Garoppolo. That will be far easier said than done. Garoppolo is due to make $25 million this year. The Browns already have surrendered significant assets for Watson. It would be difficult for the Browns to give up more picks for the privilege of paying Garoppolo $25 million.
    * A three-way trade could make sense, with the Browns sending Baker Mayfield to the Panthers, the Panthers sending a draft pick or two to the 49ers, and the 49ers sending Garoppolo to Cleveland. But the question of paying Mayfield’s $18.8 million guaranteed salary continues to complicate any such conversations.

    1. Why would the Niners help Cleveland out?

If anything the team that makes the most sense is Carolina.

Why would SF do Jimmy dirty by trading him to a team where he will only be the starter at best 1 season?

"Why would the Niners help Cleveland out?"
My guess would be JL wouldn't help Cleveland out!"
If the 9ers could trade JG, get his salary off the books and get draft picks, then the question is what will the York's want?

I’m hearing that the #Seahawks and #Browns are nearing a trade agreement that would send QB Baker Mayfield to Seattle.

  11. OFF SUBJECT: I've re-evaluated how I feel about letting Tartt walk. If it's all about the Niners scapegoating him, then I hate the decision. But if the 49ers truly feel like Talanoa Hufanga has a real good chance to be better than Tartt, then I'm OK with moving on from Tartt, even if the team is a little thin at the position now. It is a big "if" though, as Tartt's 57.5% completion rate allowed in coverage, is the 3rd best mark among Safeties since 2019!

However, I'm a strong believer in moving on from the veteran who is being replaced, even if it's a season early, because I believe it's more likely to allow his replacement, in this case Hufanga, to ascend and reach his full potential sooner than he might otherwise while looking over his shoulder at Tartt.

    1. I think it goes beyond Hufanga. Rumour heading into the 2021 season was the team wanted Moore to take over the SS spot. They have been looking to upgrade from Tartt for a couple of years.

    2. He's the Moore athletic and interchangeable of that group, but if he hasn't learned to take proper angles those attributes won't really matter.

    4. Yeah, I don't mean that to suggest Moore has the inside track to win the job. Just pointing out the team has been looking to move on from Tartt the past two offseasons. There is clearly something about Tartt that makes them feel they can do better.

    5. Scooter, they want a playmaker back there to be sure.

Sources: The #Commanders and star WR Terry McLaurin have agreed to terms on a 3-year deal worth $23.3M per year new money.
    Total guarantee: $53.154M
    Full guarantee at signing: $34.6M
Another $12.5M guaranteed in March of 2023.
    Signing bonus: $28M
Roster bonuses at the start of each league year.
$250K escalators each year except for the last year based on Pro Bowl nods.

  13. The McLaurin contract extension will likely move Deebo extension to $24 -$25 Mil P/Y

    1. No choice. How you gonna pay McLaurin more than Deebo? Doesn't work.

      Delete
    2. As with a lot of the other extensions, in terms of new money/ years it averages a lot. But you have to keep in mind he has 1 year at under $3M remaining on his current contract. So his new contract is actually a 4 year, $73M deal. Sounds a lot more palatable when the full terms of the contract are considered.

      Same will happen with Deebo.

      Delete
    3. Keep in mind he isn't playing under 2 contracts. His old contract gets replaced by the new one. So the remaining year on his old contract are part of the new contract. Agents just like to highlight the new money aspect as it makes it sound better.

  14. Deebo's gotta be slotted right under Kupp, so $25.3 million is what I'm guessing.

    1. Is Deebo worth that amount of money purely as a wide receiver (i.e. no or little threat of running the ball)?

      Delete
    2. He averaged 18 yards per reception with Jimmy G. That alone is worth it. I expect that to go up with Lance undercenter.

      Delete
    3. Weren't you saying earlier no more than a $20 to $21 million per year average. What changed your mind.?

      Delete
    4. $21.5 was my line in the sand, but the market moved the line and pragmatism seems to be the prevailing sentiment.

  15. Razor
So if Deebo gets his salary extended for ~$25 Mil in 2023, trading, JG should cover Deebo's $25 Mil.
    * Where do the 9ers find the money to extend Bosa, who'll have 2 years left on his contract after a fifth-year option for 2023?
Nick Bosa's older brother, Joey Bosa, signed a five-year, $135 million extension averaging $27 million per year with $102 million in overall guarantees and $78 million fully guaranteed at signing.

    * Mike McGlinchey's $10,880,000 salary likely means he won't be back for the 2023 season.
    * Cutting Dee Ford will add ~$2.4 Mil
    * Samson Ebukam's $8,250,000 salary may make him dispensable,
    unless his play earns it.

    1. They'll need to be creative but it's one of those good problems to have. I agree that McGlinchey and Ebukam likely won't be back.

    2. This is why JG won't be on the roster this year. They need that cap space - either this year or to roll over

  16. A joint practices held on August 1st between the 9ers and Vikings is
an opportunity to see the 9ers get some live work against a team that made it to the NFC Championship game.
ANYONE KNOW HOW TO SEE IT IN THE BAY AREA?
