Nice little wedding gift from Jed.

ReplyDeleteThe best run of the day was made by rookie J.P. Mason who took a handoff from Brock Purdy nearly 25 yards.

The 49ers now have $4.3 million cap space after restructure.
ReplyDeleteI don't think they sign Tretter because according to the 49ers, they really like Brendel.
ReplyDeleteRazor
DeleteYea, you could be right, Brendel's job to lose.
When it comes to the under-the-radar hiring of Anthony Lynn, you can color me intrigued! Kyle S. and Anthony L. have a relationship that goes back a long ways, so there's obviously a mutual respect there, but I think there is a lot more to than that. Kyle seems to be evolving schematically, and that's where Lynn's fit really comes into focus for me, on multiple levels.
ReplyDeleteCheck this out and see if you can identify a theme -
ANOTHNY LYNN (49ers Assistant HC / RB Coach): Former, undrafted, 223 lbs NFL RB, who played primarily on Special Teams (thanks largely to a serious knee injury that he suffered at the very end of his college career). Lynn is a back-to-back Super Bowl Champion, with a long history of coaching RB's going back to 2003. During Lynn's 2009-2013 stint as the NY Jets' RB Coach, the Jets led the league in rushing, and interestingly - in 2103 Chris Ivory led the Jets in rushing at 223 lbs! Lynn took over as the Bills' RB Coach in 2015, and again, Lynn's team led the league in rushing, and 225 lbs RB Karlos Williams was the Bills' second leading rusher behind Shady McCoy. During Lynn's stint as the Cowboys RB coach in 2005, Marion Barber was the Cowboys' 2nd leading rusher at about 220 lbs. And during Lynn's stint as the Browns RB Coach in 2007, RB Jamal Lewis rushed for over 1,300 yds for the first time since 2003, and of course Jamal Williams was a beast of a RB at ... you guessed it - 220 lbs!
Elijah Mitchell: 215 lbs (target)
Tyrion Davis-Price: 222 lbs (target)
Trey Sermon: 215 lbs (target)
Jeff Wilson Jr: 212 lbs (target?)
JaMycal Hasty: 208 lbs (save to say he's the closest thing the 49ers have to a 3rd down scat-back)
Jordan Mason: 223 lbs
*Correction
DeleteJAMAL *LEWIS (not Williams) was a bruising 220 lbs RB who averaged 4.4 YPC under Lynn, his 2nd best YPC of his career, and it was also his 2nd best season as a receiver.
The team is clearly pivoting in terms of the type of RB they are looking for, even before the hiring of Lynn. I think there are multiple reasons for this, including ability to handle the workload/ avoid injury, selection of Trey Lance and likely move towards more read-option looks (placing more emphasis on the RB needing to run between the tackles with the QB providing the threat of hitting the edge), the increasing shift of defenses towards lighter, faster fronts to combat the proliferation of speed on offense, and (less talked about) the increasing number of teams running variations of Shanahan's outside zone offense which means teams are getting better and better at planning against it.
Delete+1, you are 100% spot on!
DeleteKyle is not only a trend setter, but he's also as guy who is a ahead of league when it comes to recognizing NFL trends, and then making them his own.
Plus, Trey has a skill set that seems tailor made for a modern, inside-zone blocking scheme, so I can see a scenario where the 49ers dominate the league in time of possession, which is Kyle's dream in a nutshell!
Obviously the inside-zone is only going to be 1 piece of the puzzle. I don't ever see Kyle drastically moving away from stretching the defense laterally, but like you pointed out, I do think limiting injuries are part of the equation.
DeleteSo, who leads the 49ers in rushing this year?
And do we have a proper nickname for the Mitchell / Davis-Price tandem (I think these 2 guys will split carries fairly evenly).
My only problem with the 49ers logic in this area is that while they appear to moving towards bigger, more powerful, less explosive backs, they are pairing them with lighter, move linemen.
DeleteNone of the linemen other than Trent are known for getting any push (even Banks) and they rely more on angles. To me this is a bad pairing as these type of linemen better paired backs that are more capable of getting "skinny" and squeezing through holes.
I would guess we will see a more consistent, less explosive running game that still struggles in short yardage situations due to most of the linemen getting stood up.
Aaron Banks was projected as a road-grader who's best NFL fit was in a power scheme, but who needed a full seasons worth of NFL strength and conditioning, like a lot of guys.
DeleteI would disagree with him being a road grader as I think of these as blockers that can move the guy in front of them.
DeleteHe is not a natural bender and so his pad level gets to high. As a result, while his frame and size allowed him to be devastating in combo or down blocks, he was far less so when tasked with simply moving the man in front of him.
The thing he was universally praised for was his anchor in pass pro. Scouts had far more varied takes on him as a people mover.
Quite honestly, I think he was just a poor pick in a similar vane to Jushua Garnet. Though I would say he is less powerful and a better pass blocker.
With Mack retiring its going to be a big test for the young OL. Really need some of these guys to step up. Time will tell if they are able to.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Brendel is getting first crack. But not sure he's the answer. Should be a very interesting position to watch in camp.
They sure talked Brendel up like he was their guy. We'll see if he's ready.
DeleteI wonder if the apparent shift to more of a power running game played into their decision making at center this offseason? Having a top end athletic center is obviously something Shanahan considers important for his outside zone offense... but if they will be doing less and less of that then maybe they feel they can get by with a guy that is simply competent.
DeleteDunno, but the fact that they didn't even draft one speaks volumes, plus he survived the roster last year. That tells me the job is his to lose to the likes of Brunskill, whom I believe they want in more of his natural utility role, projects and ufda's.
DeleteThe writing was on the wall for Mack. It's unfortunate, but at least he didn't catch the Niners off guard, so they have been able to plan accordingly. Also, I won a 12-pack of GUINNESS Draught, which is especially good because I could live on that stuff!
ReplyDeleteAll 49ers draft picks have now been signed.
ReplyDeleteNow comes the hard part. Signing Samuel and Bosa with structurally cap friendly deals.
DeleteAt some level you have to accept deals with elite players aren't ever really "cap friendly". But will be interesting to see how they do go about structuring them.
DeleteVery interesting.
DeleteGreg Cosell on TDP (Ross Tucker Podcast reported in Niner Nation yesterday):
ReplyDelete"Well, I really liked Ty Davis-Price a lot. I got to him late in the process and I was not surprised when the 49ers drafted him. And it would not surprise me, just like Elijah Mitchell, as a sixth-round rookie a year ago, if he got meaningful reps.
He essentially became their feature back, but he got hurt a lot because he’s not that big. Davis-Price could play a lot this year. He is a big, athletic back. He’s got burst, acceleration, he had some natural bend to him. He had a physical presence. He kept his pads low. He finished runs with velocity and power, I mean, I really liked this kid.
I was in some ways because I got to him late and didn’t know what to expect... I was kinda blown away by this kid. I think he’s got all the running traits in an NFL foundation back. To me, there’s no question that over time he can carry a volume load. If you want to give him the ball 16-20 times a game, he can do that. He’s over 6 feet, he’s 211 [pounds], I really liked his tape a lot."

For Cosell to be that impressed by a rb in the 3rd round says something. I still think Sermon could be a trade candidate if he can't get out of the dog house.
DeleteWhat has Sermon shown that would interest another team? Would the team receive more than a 7th round draft pick?
DeleteWouldn't be much but they way this team drafts it could be another Mitchell.

Jason Verrett's return bodes well for 49ers newcomers, DeMeco Ryans says.
ReplyDeleteI agree Verrett will help the young CB's.....But IMO, Verrett's biggest asset (if he can stay healthy), is as back up if E-Man or Ward is injured, or either wear down at the end of the season.
