Bye, Bye In July?

According to a recent question and answer session with Sports Illustrated, Albert Breer was asked when the 49ers were likely to trade Jimmy Garoppolo?

"I’d set the over/under at July 1, and there are a couple reasons for it". "One, the hope is that Jimmy Garoppolo, coming off rotator cuff surgery, will be throwing in late June. If he can prove then that he’s capable, that’d help—remember, with just one year left on his contract, how soon he gets back to full strength is an important element in his marketability. And not being able to throw in March and April, with the rehab finish line months away, hurt his trade value then". "Two, by the time we get there, teams will have wrapped up their offseason programs, which means coaches will have had nine weeks with their players, with three weeks of OTA practices, plus the mandatory minicamp mixed in. An injury in the course of that could, of course, create a quarterback need somewhere. But even absent that, there could be a team or two that decides, after having the spring to look at their quarterbacks, to add a new one".

  1. It's too bad that they could not have traded JG before the surgery. Until he is gone the rumors will persist.

    1. Keeping fingers crossed he doesn't trip and injure himself until then.

    2. Kittle on Lance

"So I thought Trey took a bunch of steps forward. And for Trey to become a really good quarterback in the NFL, he needs reps. And so, once this kid gets a lot of reps, just watch out because some of the things I've seen him do in practice is kind of mind-boggling, so I'm waiting for it."

    3. Hope this saga with Jimmy ends soon.
Trey the savant will be fine.

  3. arm fitness

Dr. Pandya has never heard the term used for a QB.

“I have never heard that about a QB, only pitchers,” Pandya said. “QBs can definitely hurt their shoulder, but in the absence of some structural issue, they don’t throw enough or fast enough to have general durability issues. That’s why you don’t see QBs getting Tommy John surgery.”

The throwing motion for a quarterback and the volume of throws a quarterback makes don’t put the same stress on the arm that throwing a baseball does. That’s why not even a long, grueling offseason training program would be enough to wear out a QB.

  4. Kittle is the man, he is not only a leader on the Niners he is also a leader amongst NFL players.

...So who is going to throw to all of these tight ends? Kittle's teammate, and the likely starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers in 2022, Trey Lance, is one.

"I've got three [quarterbacks] confirmed for you," Kittle told Florio. "I've got my guy, C.J. Beathard. I've got my guy, Nick Mullens. I've got my guy, Trey Lance. He's coming down to TEU. ... Zach Wilson is at about 99 percent. He's trying to decide if he wants to come back from Cabo or not. I was like, 'Zach, you're going to come back from Cabo.' ... And then the last one I'm working on: Josh Allen is trying to see if he can make it work."

  5. So your point is no Jimmy? Makes sense. In the interviews Kittle has given lately he sounds to me like he's looking forward to Lance taking the helm.

    1. As many times as Jimmy's balls sailed high putting George in a compromising position to catch the football, it's no surprise he's looking forward to Lance.

    2. Jimmy G was one overthrown pass away from possibly winning the Superbowl. Imagine what a hero he would have been had he completed that pass. There's a good chance that Lance would have been drafted by a different team because the 49ers would not be in need of a young gun with a Superbowl winning QB already on the field.
But these things were never accomplished by JG and I doubt that his Superbowl winning dream will happen here.
This is Trey Lance time and the 49ers must stick with him even if he hits some bad bumps.
Thought I would never say this, but Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers need to separate.

  6. Have the Niners signed any of their draft choices?

  7. According to Over the Cap, the 9ers only have $1,751,252 in available cap space with its top-51 contracts. So this is true, they apparently do not have the cap space to sign most of their draft picks.

    1. Correct, GEEP. Which is a key reason why the idea they may hold onto JG doesn't have the ring of truth to it.

    2. Scooter, certainly seems to be elasticized.

    3. They still want to trade him, so they still have to give the impression there is a possibility they will hold onto him as it is highly unlikely a team will trade for him if they think they can just wait until he is released.

The more the national media plays up the idea the 49ers aren't sold on Lance and may keep JG the better the chance the 49ers have of convincing another team they might hold onto him if they don't get a good offer.

But when you look at the 49ers actions and look at the salary cap position it seems very clear to me the team isn't expecting to have JG on the roster, that the offseason plan has always been based on moving on from him, and if a trade doesn't materialise before TC they'll likely just release him. They need that cap space to sign the rookies before TC.

I agree. It appears the 9ers keeping JG is as likely as drawing to an inside straight.

  9. TE Tyler Kroft is signing with the 49ers.

  10. Question for the blog:
Who's the 9ers SS against the Bears? Hufanga? Moore? or Odum?

    1. Moore in obvious passing situations, and Hufanga on early downs.

    2. Yeah, I'm going with Moore, so long as his recovery from the achilles injury has gone well.

    3. Not just the achilles with Moore. It's angles, angles, angles.

Yea, I agree it's Moore if, as Scooter says, "his recovery from the achilles injury has gone well."
I like Hufanga, but you can't teach speed! I do believe as he
gains experience, he'll learn to read the plays and put himself in a better position to make up for his lack of speed.
