Will the 49ers trade up with their first pick?

By Scooter_McG

The 49ers find themselves in an unusual position in the 2022 draft - for the first time in the Shanahan/ Lynch era the team is without a first round pick. During their tenure to date, which has now covered five drafts, the 49ers have made seven first round selections - Thomas and Foster in 2017, McGlinchey in 2018, Bosa in 2019, Kinlaw and Aiyuk in 2020, and then Lance in 2021. The team has historically valued those first round selections very highly, so last years trade up to #3 to take Lance, which cost them 2022 and 2023 first round picks, shows how much Shanahan truly feels getting a top tier QB can make this team a consistent contender.

Of note, the team has also shown a propensity to move up in the draft in late round one through round 4 in order to get the guys they really like. Foster and Aiyuk, the two first round picks that were selected at the back end of the first round, were both selected after small moves up (with Foster, the team moved up from the 2nd round). The 49ers also made moves up to get players like CJ Beathard and Joe Williams (2017), Dante Pettis (2018) and Trey Sermon (2021).

With nine overall selections, no glaring needs on the team and decent existing depth, it seems like there could be a good opportunity for the 49ers to look to move up in the second round from pick 61 to try and get one impact player that may fall out of the first round.

It is also possible such a trade is made easier by including a current player on the roster. There are of course rumours circulating around Deebo Samuel's contract extension, and the potential for the team to decide to move on if they don't feel they can or want to match the compensation Deebo is seeking. Were such a trade to happen the 49ers would likely be in line for multiple picks, including a first rounder. But a more likely scenario may be a trade involving Jimmy Garoppolo that results in the 49ers moving up in the draft.

And if they were to make such a move, I could see the team targeting either one of the high quality safety prospects expected to be available in the second round, or an edge player that slides out of the first round.

What say you? Do you see the 49ers looking to move up in the second round? And if so, who for?

  1. There are so many moving parts in this draft that nothing will surprise me. Could the Panthers trade down to get the day 2 picks for Jimmy G? Could Greenlaw or Al-Shaair be part of a trade up? If for some odd reason Cine were to fall out of the first round I could see the reasoning for making a move. He missed 11 tackles on 159 attempts. I could also see them moving up for Mafe if he were to slide.

  2. Yeah, Cine or Brisker I could see the team being interested in. Maybe less so Pitre, unless they really just want a nickel.

And of course there are a bunch of edge guys they could like and move up for.

    1. I feel like Mafe has the fastest get off from the group expected to be at the top of round 2.

  3. I can see them dumping JG for whatever they can get for him. Steelers, Wash, Panthers maybe interested partners. That move will allow the team to retain Deebo.

What about this Cam Jurgan's plays center?

    1. If push comes to shove, I would rather have Bosa than Deebo.

    2. Jurgan's would be fine with me.

  5. I hope Deebo is on hand for OTA's even though he won't be doing any on field work. No showing up would be worse than than the scrub.

    1. If he doesn't show that probably means, it's the end.

    2. I'm pretty sure Kittle showed up but I don't recall if Warner did.

    3. Both Kittle and Warner showed up, but I also don't think a no show from Deebo would be such a bad thing.

      Delete
    4. Why? What the hell is wrong with showing up?

      Delete
    5. What's so bad about not showing up? These are mostly voluntary anyway.

      Delete
    6. I think it exudes leadership and professionalism to show up, but I fully expected Deebo not to show. Why? Because his scrub made it clear his maturity was a no show.

    7. Sure. But Kittke and Warner were already team captains. Deebo isn't. I'm not really surprised he isn't as professional or a leader in the same sense.

      Delete
    8. Maybe that's why BB passed on him.

      Delete
    9. Maybe. Not every player has to have that mentality. On the field Deebo is a leader and works very hard for his team and teammates. That's what matters.

    10. That's all fine and dandy but when you're asking for over $20 APR you'd better be striving to get better, and part of Deebo getting better is to take on some of that leadership role imho.

    11. How many WRs are really team leaders though? All I know is that Deebo is one of the guys that sets the tone for the 49ers on the field. He's had question marks about his maturity and professionalism off the field since college, but nobody questions what he does on it.

    12. I just feel as though if you're asking for top dollar you need to be tops across the board to include leadership by example. I respect holding out from field activity to protect your investment, but I cannot condone not showing up.

  6. Jaquan Brisker coming in for a visit. 49ers were at the Penn St pro day too. Brisker is definitely a guy I thought they might target if they do trade up.

    1. RB Ty Chandler also coming in. I seem to recall someone saying he should be a day 3 name to know for the 49ers... 😉

    2. I'd take Brisker over Pitre, but I'd take Cine over Brisker. Wouldn't surprise me to see Brisker slide from the top to the middle of round 2. Cine...no way in hell.

      Delete
    3. I like Chandler. You can tell they're looking for a back with some receiving and return experience.

      Delete
    4. I actually think the 49ers would rank Brisker over Cine anyway. The way Brisker plays... very much a 49ers type defender.

      Delete
    5. Definitely receiving ability appears to be a priority for the RBs they are looking at.

      Delete
    6. Maybe. I have Cine over Brisker and not just because of the latter's injury history. Speed. He sprints from his zone creating excellent closing speed. I think he only had one penalty called against him in 2021 and it was a pass interference, and I'm pretty sure he only gave up one TD pass. I mean, he does it all so I'm not going to say I wouldn't be surprised if they had Brisker over Cine.

      Delete
    7. I rate Cine very highly too. But when I look at with a 49ers lens, I think the team will like Brisker's versatility, intelligence, physicality and mentality more than Cine, whose more explosive. Not suggesting Cine isn't versatile, intelligent or physical because he is, but if measured side by side I would put Brisker ahead of Cine in those areas.

      Delete
    8. Not saying you're wrong Scooter but that may be a prime example of them getting too cute if they were to prefer Brisker over Cine. Just saying.

  8. Perhaps the 9ers march to a different drummer? Instead of paying Deebo $25 - $30Mil P/Y, or "trading up?" Lynch calls NY Jets HC Saleh and GM Joe Douglas and makes a trade...Deebo for draft picks #10 and #111.
9ers use Rd #1 pick #10, to draft Center Tyler Linderbaum, Iowa!

    Lance Zierlein NFL Analyst, Overview:
Linderbaum has Pro Bowl potential but needs to be matched with a move-based rushing attack. He has the foot quickness and GPS to consistently find top positioning in the first phase of the block. He plays with leverage and body control to sustain and keep the running lane open.

  10. Maybe the Panthers should trade down if they really want Jimmy to get more picks so that we aquire a 2nd rounder for Jimmy
from them this would be famtastic and gives us some ammo.

  12. Add OL Jason Poe to the pre draft visit list. Man, I hadn't heard of him until now, but the kid is an incredible athlete for an OL. A bit undersized though. Listed as a OG, but 48ers had him snapping the ball.

Whatever, I have already discounted his services. Trade him to the Jaguars or Texans.

    1. I got the feeling they were going to trade him pretty early on. Not the most ideal outcome but you might as well make the best of it. Let's see how much we can get for him.

    2. I am sorry to see all this happen. Once he scrubbed the account I figured he was gone.

    3. Lets just wait and see what happens. His brother also then back tracked saying he doesn't know what's happening. Until we hear directly from Deebo or the 49ers it is all speculation. Negotiations on contract extensions for star players are often tricky.

  16. Deebo Samuel, 49ers could be on the outs: By M. Florio
    https://sports.yahoo.com/deebo-samuel-49ers-could-outs-133430084.html

If Deebo is in fact demanding to be paid $30+ Mil. P/Y and to be traded, JL should call the NYJ HC Saleh and GM Joe Douglas and make a trade!
The Jets get Deebo and EDGE Sampson Ebukam. the 9ers get the Jets 1st and 2nd Rd draft picks #10 and #38
    * The jets biggest need is a WR. Deebo is better than Ohio
St. WR Garrett Wilson, the #1 WR in the 2022 draft. The Jets 2nd biggest need is an EDGE rusher, Sampson fills that need.
    * Draft picks #10 and #38 = 1820 points, about the same value as the jets draft pick #4.
    * The Jets would still have draft picks #4 and #35 to draft another EDGE plus a DB to fill their 4rd biggest need, plus draft picks #69, 111, 117, 146 and 163.

    * With draft picks #10 and #38, the 9ers draft a top Safety
and an EDGE rusher, to complement Bosa.

    1. It's risky but if that's what Deebo wants. I'm hoping he's just waiting for the other Wr's to sign first before he puts ink to paper.

  17. If Deebo truly is citing his usage as a reason for wanting to be traded... isn't he just diminishing how much teams would be willing to pay him? Strange.
