2022 Edition NFL Draft/RB

The 49ers seem to be looking for a day 3 receiving back, and not the kind that just rolls out of the backfield. One that has demonstrated an understanding of the route tree with soft hands. Here is a list of the running backs they are known to have met with I feel they'll need to use a draft pick on:

James Cook 5'11" 204 lbs., Georgia 31" arms, 9 1/8" hands, 4.42 Forty, 33" Vertical, 10' 4" Broad Jump, Natural pass catching running back with 1 drop in 74 targets. Can run a variety of routes. Doesn't possess the contact balance or toughness to run inside like his brother Dalvin. 2 career fumbles. Got arrested for driving with an open container and no license in December 2019. 4th round grade.

Brian Robinson Jr. 6'2" 225 lbs., Alabama 31 7/8" arms, 9 3/4" hands, 4.53 Forty, 30" Vertical, 9'11" Broad Jump, 4.49 Short Shuttle, 7.33 Three Cone, Physical ball carrier with one cut ability. Has potential to be a three down back. Haven't seen him run a full route tree but he did have 35 receptions for 296 yards and 2 scores on mostly screens. Not a natural ball catcher. Has kick return experience. 5th round grade.

Ty Chandler 5'11" 204 lbs., North Carolina 32 1/8" arms, 9" hands, 4.38 Forty, 31" Vertical, 121" Broad jump, 7.40 Three Cone, 4.41 Short Shuttle, 1.46 Three Cone, 15 Bench Press, One year starter with an impressive year for the Tarheels finishing with 1091 yards rushing on 182 carries averaging 6 yards per and 13 TD's. Caught 15 passes for 216 yards and a score. Has kick return experience. Versatile back with good contact balance and above average speed. Looks like a 6th round prospect to me.

Jerome Ford 5'10" 210 lbs., Cincinnati 30 7/8" arms, 9 1/8" hands, 4.46 Forty, 31" Vertical, 9'10" Broad Jump, 4.22 Short Shuttle, 7.31 Three Cone, Finished the year with 1319 yards on 215 carries averaging 6 yards per with 19 TD's. Caught 21 for 220 yards averaging 10.5 yards and a score. Ball security issues fumbling 6 times on 316 carries. 6th round grade.

Two more running backs the 49ers have not been known to meet with but could be interested. First up:

Kyren Williams 5'9" 194 lbs., Notre Dame 28 5/8" arms, 9" hands, 4.65 Forty, 32" Vertical, 9'8" Broad Jump, 4.33 Short Shuttle, 7.07 Three Cone, Averaged 20 carries a game over the past 2 years while running for a grand back to back years. No injuries. Caught 42 pass with a drop in 2021. Only player to rack up a 1000 yards on the ground, 350 through the air and 100 yards as a returner. Natural hands catcher. Doesn't have the sand to hold up in pass pro. 5th round grade.

Rachaad White 6' 214 lbs., Arizona St., 31 1/4" arms, 9 3/4" hands, 4.48 Forty, 38" Vertical, 10'5" Broad Jump, 20 Bench Press, Quicker than fast with very good feet. Averaged just over 6 yards per carry for his two seasons. Experienced running routes out wide and from the slot. Finished with 48 targets which was the most of any back in the Pac-12. Smells the endzone with 22 TD's through 15 games. Accounted for a first down or TD in just over 44% of his 224 touches. Very little return experience. Another 5th round candidate.

  1. OFF TOPIC, BUT LATEST ON DEBOO: Ian Rapoport
    https://sports.yahoo.com/deebo-samuel-reportedly-asked-49-ers-to-trade-him-165955461.html

    * The #49ers have been looking to make offers for a long-term deal with WR Deebo Samuel, but he’s been unwilling to engage. This is why. Unclear where this goes from here. But Samuel wanting out is the latest in big-name WR drama.
    * We don't know what Samuel's reasons are, but we may know what they're not. According to Rapoport, it's not about money.

    1. Prescient on the 49ers part for having an Aiyuk up their sleeve.

    2. Seems like he is objecting to the usage as an RB. The best thing about the Deebo affair, for the moment it has quieted the JG saga.

      Delete
    3. That's funny, Under. I never heard bitch once. In fact, he coined his new position as, "wide back" with a smile. No one on this earth will convince me it isn't about the money. It's ALWAYS about the money.

      Delete
    4. Andrew Siciliano asked Schefter to clarify what it means that Samuel is frustrated with his usage. Does that mean he dislikes being utilized as a running back, or would he like to be paid more if he is?

Rapoport admitted that he is unsure about the specifics, adding, "What I was told ... was that he was not comfortable with how the 49ers used him last year. That is what I know. I'm sure there will be more to it, but that is what I know as of now."

    5. You're correct Razor. But doesn't it seem STRANGE that Deebo and the 9ers can't work this out? If it's NOT about money (as reported), why is Deebo "refusing to engage?" Unless Deebo is a DIVA throwing a temper tantrum...And if he is, then the 9ers need to find a
      trade partner.
If Deebo is in fact demanding to be traded, JL should call the NYJ Saleh & Joe Douglas, and make a trade!
The Jets get Deebo and EDGE Sampson Ebukam. the 9ers get the Jets 1st and 2nd Rd draft picks #10 and #38
      * The jets biggest need is a WR. Deebo is better than Ohio St. WR Garrett Wilson, the #1 WR in the 2022 draft. The Jets 2nd biggest need is an EDGE rusher, Sampson fills that need.
      * Draft picks #10 and #38 = 1820 points, about the same value as the jets draft pick #4.
      * The Jets would still have draft picks #4 and #35 to draft another EDGE plus a DB to fill their 3rd biggest need, plus draft picks #69, 111, 117, 146 and 163.

      * With draft picks #10 and #38, the 9ers draft a top Safety and an EDGE rusher, to complement Bosa.

      Delete
    6. I think the best they could get would be: Deebo+#61=#10+#38. From there the best course of action would be to trade down from #10 and try and recoup a 1st round pick in 2023. As for #38...Cine or Brisker if he's gone.

      Delete
    7. Strange situation. But if Deebo truly wants out the team is better off trading him. Especially if Deebo doesn't want to be used as a RB on occasion anymore - that's part of what makes him elite.

      Delete
    8. Razor
Yep, I'd prefer Cine, but either one would be a good replacement for Tart.
      * I suggested Sampson Ebukam as part of the trade, for the $6.5 Mil. cap savings. Plus extending Ward for
another $6.3 Mil. would give the 9ers enough to sign their draft picks.

    9. Razor
FYI: The 49ers have “plans” to keep Samuel around long-term. But talk is cheap and Jets GM Douglas, could change minds with a massive offer. What would that entail? It could be both of the Jets’ top-10 picks. Or a combination of the 10th pick and one of his second-rounders – ((I which is what the Raiders gave up for Adams.)) Or even more. It all depends on the player Douglas wants to add to and how much he’s willing to give up. He’s said he doesn’t want to be “reckless,” but it’s clear he is willing to be aggressive.

    11. Larry Kruger brought up the KC Chiefs as a possible landing spot for Deebo. I think that the idea of playing with Mahomes could be very enticing for Deebo. This move would certainly open a bigger window for the Chiefs to make a strong SB run.
Would receiving the Chiefs 1st rd picks 29 and 30 suffice?
This is where the Jets might come calling. Don't think they would offer their number 4, but number 10 might be a feasible solution.
Hey, the dust will settle soon enough!

  2. MORE INFO ON DEEBO DEMANDING TO BE TRADED

    * Why did Deebo Samuel request a trade? 49ers WR frustrated with role, not contract, per report.
    https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/deebo-samuel-trade-contract-49ers/kuylbsdmceceuk1rzy79kyiw

    * ESPN's Jeff Darlington spoke to the 49ers receiver on Wednesday. He revealed that Samuel has, indeed, asked the team to trade him.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Samuel's problem with the 49ers isn't related to money. In fact, the team has tried to negotiate a long-term deal with their star wideout, but he has been "unwilling to engage" in those discussions.
Instead, it appears that Samuel is frustrated with his usage in the 49ers' offense. More specifically, he doesn't like "taking a lot of hits" when he's used like a running back, as Rapoport explains.

TRUE, but Deebo could be a cancer in the locker room!
With a lot of new 9er coaches, a new starting QB and O-Line changes, the last thing the 9ers need is that
      kind of distraction!

      Delete
    3. As mentioned in a previous thread, the dude needs to see what happened to Le'Veon Bell and realize this isn't a road worth pursuing. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

Niners should leak the amount offered, if it gets out that they were offering 5/115 with 70 guaranteed (or something), its going to be hard for DS to come back and say that isn't a quality offer, especially if its an initial offer. Theres just no way he's getting 30M a year, even if its funny money.

      Delete
    4. Don't think Deebo is a cancer.

As fans we're allowed to be pissed at him for acting, as we would call it, ungrateful but he's never been a dude thats been a problem in the lockerroom (or off field too).

Lets not forget that Kittle's agent basically called the initial offer/negotiations with the niners a complete disaster, but he got signed and everyone's happy.

While I too believe Deebo should be paid what he's worth, but a percent of his worth to the 9ers, is his ability to run the ball! His actions indicate to me, that he's "playing a game" for more money.
      * Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Deebo has stated that he wants to be the highest paid WR in the NFL? Also:
      1) Kittle did NOT refuse to engage. While he didn't
agree with the offer, the negotiations continued until
an agreement was made. Big difference in my opinion.
      2) Kittle did NOT remove his #49ers profile picture ans unfollowed the team and delete all his posts.
      * IMO, that's considered "passive aggressive behavior" and behavior that would likely lead to the 9er players taking sides. By any definition that's a locker room distraction?
While no one knows what's going on in Deebo's head, or his intentions, it would appear he's throwing a temper tantrum?

    6. The whole scrubbing stuff is pure crap and immaturity of this generation, then again there was no twitter back in Barry Sanders, Deions, or Jim Browns day so who knows how they'd have acted out of frustration or years of losing.

I don't like it and think it shows the lack of maturity. Maybe in their mind its both a way to put pressure on the team via the media and fanbase "reading into it", but I'm sure the teams don't even spend 2 seconds on it.

The only other reason they do this is its a way to preemptively save face, like they can tell all their friends and teammates they didn't care about that team, they weren't down with them, look at my socials you won't see any of that on there. Its like a highschooler going thru a breakup and throwing all the stuff they got from their ex away...but still talking about them all the time to their, very annoyed, friends.

Sadly this feels like another example of the "everyone gets a trophy" syndrome, inability to process emotions without going dumb.

We know KS employs a wide zone running game. In the past, he's utilized RB's Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert's speed with success (when they were healthy)!

The RB on your list who meets Shanahan's requirements and speed to make KS Wide Zone running game effective, is day 3 draft pick N. Carolina RB Ty Chandler.
Chandler served notice at the Senior Bowl that he could play in the NFL. Then his Combine results backed it up and sent the NFL scouts back to review his game tapes.

Aside from the Cost of Living (housing prices), taxes, drought (wildfires)... nothing.
And while some poo poo the state taxes, saying other states make up for it with higher property taxes it doesn't add up because of how high property prices are in the state. Imagine paying a Million dollars for a simple 3 bed, 2 bath house... its normal in the major cities there.

    1. Umm, that would be a big fat NO!

Why would the 49ers want to take on Sam Darnold? Why wouldn't the 49ers be better off just cutting Jimmy and saving $25M.

Besides, Kyle Shanahan has never proven himself as a developer of QB's, that's not his niche. And to be frank, Sam Darnold is beyond hope!

This might be the dumbest offer for Garropolo that I've read yet, because it makes no sense for the 49ers!

      Delete
    2. And frankly, it also makes no sense for the Panthers either.

      Delete
    3. The problem with Sam Darnold is that he processes even slower than Jimmy, and so Sam gets easily rattled, which only compounds his weakness in processing. That's a formula for disaster as an NFL quarterback. Sam Darnold might not even be a legitimate backup up at this point, because he crashed and burned in Carolina, exactly the same way he crashed and burned with the Jet's. Sam doesn't have the mental makeup for an NFL QB in my opinion, and from what I've heard he's also not a football junkie, so I think he's probably out of the league by 2025, if not sooner..

  14. Velus Jones Jr. had pre-draft visit with 49ers today...

As things continue to deteriorate between All-Pro receiver Deebo Samuel and the 49ers, the team is doing its due diligence on draft prospects.
Tennessee receiver Velus Jones Jr. met with the 49ers today in a pre-draft visit in Santa Clara, Matt Barrows of TheAthletic.com reports. Oklahoma State receiver Tay Martin and SMU receiver Danny Gray also were among the 30 prospects the 49ers hosted, per Barrows.
Nebraska wideout Samori Toure had a Zoom interview with the 49ers.

  16. I just watched the Deebo 2022 highlights. Man, I have to admit that I'd forgotten just how dynamic he is. He really was most of the offense last year and without him there is no way the 49ers would have had a winning season. There must have been at least 10 run/catches for more than 30 yards that resulted in a TD.

    1. There isn't another player as good as him with the ball in his hands right now.

    2. He's great but his production can be platooned if he's unreasonable. The optimist in me says that Mostert asked for a trade and they worked it out, but the pragmatist in me says we're Eucked if we lose him.

      Delete
    3. Yeah, if they lose Deebo he isn't a guy you just replace with one player. If not unique, there at least isn't many like him.

But at the same time I think Shanahan can build a successful offense without him. It would just look a bit different.

Worth keeping in mind that the plan at the start of the season wasn't to use Deebo so much as a RB. Injuries/ depth made that happen. They need to develop a strong stable of RBs so they don't need to use Deebo like that so often anyway.

The bigger loss (imo) would be replacing his impact picking up yards after the catch. But then, if Lance is more likely to try and find receivers downfield than JG was... the reliance of the offense on picking up yards after the catch goes down too.

      Delete
    4. Depends on what you get for him. If you get a rookie WR who puts up Chase numbers, its not an issue. Also, Kittle's production will improve as he will be more involved.

You expect the running game to be better than it was last year (no being left high and dry by Mostert hurt after 1 game).

If the niners get a 1st, 2nd and additional picks this year or next, they'll have made out amazingly.

Deebo will end up on a crappy team and in 3 years be killing himself that he was so stubborn (if it gets to that).

      Delete
    5. Now I am reading that the Niners have not made an offer as of yet...the only fact that seems consistent is Deebo wants to be gone.

  18. Great Stuff.

For me I like Chandler, Ford, and Strong for this team. They get up to speed in hurry and offer that home run threat that this team missed. If he had that in the backfield last year Deebo wouldn't have had to have been used so much and the conflict he would put defenders in would have paid off majorly for him and an explosive back.
