Turay For The 49ers!

#49ers have agreed to a one-year deal with DL Kemoko Turay, per his agents at . Former second-round pick coming off a career-high 5.5 sacks last season with the #Colts.

Will this prevent them from taking an edge rusher early? Not in my opinion. Great pairing though. If he can stay healthy, 15-20 snaps a game should go a long way into helping him do that; I think he could be the best f/a bargain bin edge rusher Kocurek's ever gotten in San Francisco. What do you think?

  1. Assuming this is a low cost signing, this is an excellent pickup. Low risk/ potential high reward type signing. Turay was on his way to a big year in 2019 before injuries hit and basically wiped out two years. His play time was limited last year but in a designated pass rusher role he put up quality numbers.

He'll take the role Dee Ford was meant to provide, and hopefully stay healthy.

    1. I was kind of nervous they weren't going to get him, but I assumed the wait had to do with compensatory manipulation.

    2. Feels like they are platooning opposite Bosa. Hopefully Turay, Ebukam, Ridgeway and Omenihu can, combined, get to a 12+ sacks.

  2. Kemoko Turay, joins Kevin Givens, Maurice Hurst, Jordan Willis, Kerry Hyder, Hassan Ridgeway, Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead, Javon Kinlaw, Charles Omenihu, and Samson Ebukam.

There is some talent on the defensive line. Makes me wonder if they even draft a defensive lineman at all. If Kinlaw gets his legs under him and plays up to draft status that line could be really good.

    1. Under, a one year contract and health concerns regarding Turay is the reason it won't preclude them from going edge early. Ebukam is in his last year as well.

    2. Yes, but I don't see that as a problem as next year there will be other FA plug and play players to take their place. It's a revolving door league now.

    3. Under, like last season, they are setting themselves up so that there are no "holes" and they can draft for the future rather than immediate returns. When your first pick is at 61 you have no idea what value will be available when you pick, so make sure you have a plan in place if you can't get the positions you want.

Even so, I expect they will draft an edge day 2. It is a deep group. And Bosa is the only edge under contract beyond this season. They will no doubt add FAs again next year, but you want some continuity as well.

      Delete
    4. Exactly, in Kocurek's system the continuity on the defensive line needs to be choreographed, if you will, with the secondary.

    5. I understand what you guys think they are doing and I certainly do not dismiss it, I am not so sure. Its almost like rent a player with one year contracts.

      Delete
    6. By the way I hope you guys are right, I hate to say it, but it's looking to me the Rams have found a way of doing this. I thought by now the ramifications of the quanitity of high talent would catch up with them....

      Delete
    7. They bring in a couple of cheap one year rentals each year to build quality depth. But they also have always had a core group of returning players.

      Delete
    8. We have our defensive "core" just like the Rams. Bosa/Armstead/Kinlaw(tbd) up front, Warner in the middle and Ward 1a and 1b on the back end.

      Delete
    9. Sorry, was referring to edge specifically. They've had a core group of returning edge guys each year, supplemented by some cheap additions. Would be surprised if they don't plan ahead at edge through the draft.

  3. "April 28, that's the real Deebo deadline," Kawakami added.

I agree with that statement. If he survives that day Deebo will be with the Niners.

    1. I think they plan to trade him.

    2. I'm sure they'll work a deal that sounds massive, but in reality has a lot of voidable years and performance based metrics. In reality the cap hit will be team friendly(ish). Its like what happened with CK's contract, everyone was making a big deal out of his record 7 year 126M contract, but in reality the guy only took home 39M of that after 3 seasons, the only real guaranteed money was his signing bonus (12M) and 2014 salary which was just 650k, the other guarantee was for career ending injury. The guy was signed for 7 years in 2014, yet his deal hasn't been an issue since he opted out, so if the Niners give Deebo some 5 year, 150M deal guarantee they will know how to work it so that 100M of it doesn't affect the team.

      Delete
    3. Completely agree with Kawakami. Worst outcome for the 49ers would be to trade Deebo without getting additional draft picks this year. That would be a big setback for 2022. So I think they either trade him just before/ during the draft, or they'll find a way to get a deal done.

  4. I mean it's a critical date to be sure, not only for Deebo but perhaps Mack as well.

  5. If you're a quarterback hunter looking to recharge your career, where else would you have a better opportunity than to work opposite Bosa under Kocurek?

    1. Edge players won't have missed that Hyder and Key parlayed one year under Kocurek into pretty nice deals.

  6. I'd be very surprised if Deebo plays this year without an extension too.

    1. The fact that he's been absent from working out with the other receivers and Lance reinforces this notion.

      Delete
    2. That would be smart on his part.

      Delete
    3. What if Deebo and his agent send the right signals through April 28th only to have them go nuclear afterward, holding out leaving the 49ers over a barrel?

      Delete
    4. It's a tough situation for the Niners. What Deebo brings to the table is unique and what makes it unique is KS. I can see him being traded to the Jets.

      Delete
    5. I think its a bit of a misnomer to suggest KS is what makes Deebo unique. It isn't just KS that could find ways to make use of Deebo's elite skills with the ball in his hands.

Nor is Deebo the first player to have these types of skills - Percy Harvin was an elite playmaker too and the Vikings did an excellent job of using his talents.

The difference between Deebo and Harvin is that Deebo is also a decent WR in the traditional sense, so it isn't entirely about scheming him touches like it was with Harvin.

      Delete
    6. Scooter, that's the main reason I'd be so bummed if he does get traded. I want to see the difference Lance makes in Deebo's game.

  7. ..."However, Samuel is claiming that the situation has escalated to embarrassing levels. He says that fans are saying some pretty hateful things to him. If true—and there is no reason to believe it isn't—this has gotten very ugly. Samuel says he has received death threats and racist remarks from the fans who once cheered for him."

The human race...no words to describe it.

    2. The racial component is sick.
      Death threats are sick.
The anger stems from Deebo snubbing the 49ers from his social media, and for that he deserves some culpability. For the anger not the vulgar expressions.

      Delete
    3. Scooter lol I was thinking the same thing.

Razor, I do understand the anger, I didn't think it was very smart for Deebo to do that...and is why I won't be upset if they trade him.

      Delete
    4. I loved Deebo, but after he threw his shot across the bow, I took it as a slight as well. I stand by my proposal. #10+#38-#61=Trade for mine. The best course of action from there would be to trade down where you think you could get Linderbaum, Center, (around #18-#20), and a 2023 1st round pick at the same time.

      Delete
    5. No guarantees it would work out that way. Lots of risk involved. I would prefer to make the peace with Deebo, but not at $25 million. $21.5 million is where I'm at.

      Delete
    6. If we got a 10 I would be happy, anything more than that would be gravy. I agree trading back would be the wisest course of action.

    7. I still don't really get the fan anger about a player scrubbing his social media of team content while negotiating for a contract with that team. I understand it is silly on the player's part, a bit immature, but at the same time he's just trying to put a little public pressure on the team to get himself a better deal. If both sides felt negotiations were going well it wouldn't happen.

Honestly, I think fans biggest issue is it makes them fear he will leave, and fear leads to anger at him for making them feel that way.

I also think its a bit funny how many fans seem to think he should take less than what other WRs are getting this offseason, despite how many were also outlining how Deebo was a top tier player in the NFL during the season.

If he gets an extension it won't be long before the vast majority of 49er fans love him again.

      Delete
    8. Not fear Scooter. Pain. When a beloved family member turns on you publicly, it hurts; so you lash out in anger. No need to air out your frustrations like that for the reasons we're having to address right now.

He'll get what he gets but it's a negotiation behind closed doors. He can post it's $25 million APR or we ain't interested all he wants, but at the end of the day, the team is the first priority. Not one player and his demands. Hopefully Bosa is more professional when his time comes. We'll see.

      Delete
    9. Scooter as silly as it seems its loyalty. I actually see it as they are not close on negotiations, and he knows he isn't going to be back.

      Delete
    10. Did Deebo think he was going to get an "atta-boy" from the fans? No, he knew full well the reaction he'd be getting and he was fine with that. And again I reiterate I do not condone and would never condone any racial slurs or death threats. Anger yes, I was not happy he decided to do what he did but there's nothing to do about it now.

      Delete
    11. Scrubbing your social media is such a tame way of "voicing" your displeasure. He hasn't bad mouthed the 49ers. It was a bit immature, but man, I just don't get fans being angry about it.

As far as loyalty, that goes both ways, surely? Are players meant to take less than they are worth due to loyalty? If teams were loyal to their players, wouldn't they want to overpay them to keep them? This is what free agency and a cap does - it empowers players to seek the best deal they can get and limits teams ability to give every player what they want.

      Delete
    12. Scooter, scrubbing that media was like saying, Euck you. I'm Italian. There's a scene in Godfather III that goes, If someone is going around this city saying, "Fuck Michael Corleone," what do we do with a piece of shit like that? He's a fuckin' dog. Now, don't get me wrong, it's not a literal comparison, but you get the idea. It's a slight, like someone driving by giving you the middle finger. Not cool.

      Delete
    13. I don't think Deebo's pay demands are too much out of line. If the Niners came out publicly and bashed Deebo or scrubbed him from the roster on paper, I would be very disappointed in the Niners if they did that. Family matters remain private, he made it public with this gesture...

I am beginning to think that the only way to sign Deebo before the draft is releasing JG. Can you imagine if Deebo was gone and JG was still on the team come opening day...

      Delete
    14. I think the word I would use to describe Deebo's actions would be petulant.

      Delete
    15. And the reason he scrubbed it was because he didn't like what he was hearing from 49ers HQ. So he flipped them off with the scrub. That's pretty much how I see it. Like Under says, keep it all behind closed doors.

      Delete
    16. It is immature and unprofessional, sure. Being a little disappointed he took his displeasure public I can understand. Worthy of fans getting angry at Deebo over? That I don't get.

      Delete
    17. If someone I care about hurts me I get angry. Perfectly reasonable response. Not everyone is the same.

Disappointment comes after the anger for me.

  8. If he quibbles about that $3.5 million difference they can structure incentives for him to make that up through bonuses. If he scoffs at that then a trade is the nuclear option.

    1. What is your rationale behind that? Such a deal is well below what the market is currently dictating for a top WR?

      Delete
    2. Way I see it is, if you think $25M is just too much for Deebo, then you are more mad at the market than anything. His play in 2021 says he deserves top of the market pay. I can understand the reluctance to give a WR that sort of money, as I outlined in my previous article about it, but that's a philosophical team building and position value question and nothing to do with Deebo or his desire to be paid at top of the market.

If you are concerned about Deebo having only done it for one year, then I get where you are coming from a bit more. The incentives idea is a good one, but I would suggest an alternative - de-escalators if he doesn't perform to a certain level, likely with some caveats for injury impacting his ability to achieve those levels.

It places a little more risk on the team if he gets injured than an incentive-based deal, but still gives the team some leeway if Deebo can't maintain his 2021 level of play. And it also shows Deebo they believe in him a little more than an incentive-based deal to make up the difference.

      Delete
    3. Yea, this year needs to be backed up by another for mine. I'm fine with de-escalators as long as the team is not compromising their position with more risk than necessary.

  10. Is there a position of need? S, RT, C, CB, - maybe. Now if Deebo leaves, WR probably would be. I guess what I am getting at, there isn't anything that really is a need. Question marks, yes, but a need, I don't see one. Depth is an ongoing need and is a daily task.

It would be really nice to see a young center to grow with Lance.

    1. If Mack were to retire that would be a need. SS and NB are up for grabs in camp with no proven starters on the roster.

      Delete
    2. No, I don't believe there is any position that is an immediate (i.e. 2022 starter) need. Like last year, they have people that can start at every position. That's why I expect them to draft based on BPA at a selection of positions with an eye towards future need.

  11. This is going to be one of the more interesting drafts. Lots of moving parts.
