We'll be taking a look at some of the safeties that will be available late 2nd round and beyond. For me the sweet spot looks to be at the top of the 3rd round if you want a year one challenger. First up:
Bryan Cook 6'1" 206 lbs., Cincinnati 31 7/8" arms, 8 1/2" hands Safety is the last line of defense and so the first prerequisite is tackling, and this kid is one of the most reliable tacklers in this class finishing the year with 95. When he arrives at the ball carrier it's with ill intent. He's good in coverage too having been a former CB, however he needs to be better at positioning his body downfield to gain leverage. He has the versatility to be a chess piece, but I think he'd have a good chance of winning the SS position.
Nick Cross 6'1" 215 lbs., Maryland 31 1/2" arms, 9" hands, 4.34 Forty, 37" Vert, 130" Broad Jump, 6.85 Three cone, 21 Bench press, Has all the physical attributes you want to see with the versatility to be moved around. Led the Terrapins in Int's all three years there. Patient open field tackler that can bring the thump. Takes some false steps and can be manipulated and taken advantage of his lapses in awareness. I wouldn't trust him in man coverage right now but he's young to the position with room for growth. Standout special teams player.
Kirby Joseph 6'1" 200 lbs., Illinois 33" arms, 10 1/4" hands, Cover 3 safety who enjoyed a breakout season after serving in a part time role the prior 3 years. Speed to either sideline with solid tackling mechanics. Turns into a wr at the catch point with excellent body control. Finished the year with 5 Int's. Needs to get stronger and establish more consistency as a tackler. Has experience as a gunner for special teams.
Tycen Anderson 6'2" 210 lbs., Toledo 33" arms, 10 1/8" hands, 4.36 Forty, 6.64 Three cone, 35.5" Vertical, 123" Broad jump, Box safety with back end potential. Tall, long and fast with some burst to close. Urgency and play diagnosis contribute to his inconsistencies in coverage and pursuit angles. He'll need to sharpen his instincts and develop enough consistency to be trusted in an expanded coverage role. Special teams and let him compete for a nickel role on defense.
JT Woods 6'2" 193 lbs., Baylor 32 3/8" arms, 8 1/2" hands, 4.36 Forty, 6.94 Three cone, 39.5 Vertical, 128" Broad jump, Sticky handed safety with 9 career Int's, 6 of which he stole last year. Stole another one in the Senior bowl. Legit track speed that translates on the football field. Relies too much on his athletic tools which accounts for some blown assignments and tackling issues. Can lose the ball if asked to track it downfield. He's much better coming downhill.
Nice list. Verone McKinley is another they might look at around round 3/4.
ReplyDeleteMy money is on Cook though as the guy they would most want.
Thanks, Scooter. I agree on Cook.
DeleteNot sure how much stock to put in what Jimmie Ward said on his IG live chat, but he intimated that he is expecting to get extended, that Deebo will be extended, that the extensions will happen around camp, that Verrett has an offer on the table from the 49ers, and that he expects the team to draft both a CB and S.
ReplyDeleteI'm bullish on his remarks because they make sense.
DeleteBy extension I assume this means his contract will be reworked such in that it will give the Niners some added cap space this year. I haven't seen (or looked) at their cap space as of today, but I assume they still might need some room for the rookie pool. Figure both JWs extension and Fords eventual release(retirement?) would create the needed room for rookies or Deebo, if the rookie pool is still there.
DeleteI like the idea of JV on another 1 year prove-it deal, the guy just can't stay healthy so no sense in investing in him big time/long term. When he was healthy he was one of the best DBs in the league, problem is his health is even worse than JG's so you can't count on him at all. It was good that they got some playing time from the rookies this last season so if JV is back and does get to starter status next to the other Ward, if he goes out they got depth with E-Man, AT and Lenoir (DJ should be emergency), plus any rookie they draft as well. Feels like the CBs might end up being a position of depth, if not strength, this season. The Ward signing was huge as it moves everyone down a spot so a guy who can start, like E-Man, could end up being the 3rd cb if Verrett comes back and stays healthy.
GEEP
DeleteMy take was Ward expects an extension, not a rework of his current 1 year deal.
DeleteThe blog will only let me comment anonymously, not GEEP, What's changed?
ReplyDeleteHi Geep, not sure. You seem to be the only one that's having this issue. Maybe try clearing cookies and whatnot.
DeleteIf that is the real Geep...
Deletehahaha
eMJay Is that is the real eMKay?

DeleteYea, tried everything. Will only let me post anonymously
I'm starting to think the 49ers are looking at a RB round 3/ 4.
ReplyDeleteRobinson Jr. is in that 4/5 round. Better talent compensating for lack of coaching at the position this year?
DeleteDepends on what draft database you look at - some have him as a 3rd rounder. Ford also has a range from 3rd to 5th, while Cook is more round 2/3. Based on that, I'm thinking round 3/4 is where they are looking at a RB.
DeleteOne thing the RBs they are looking at all have in common - good receiving threats.
DeleteSeems as if they want a battle royale between Hasty, Sermon and a draft pick for the right to spell Mitchell.
DeleteForgot they brought back Wilson too.
DeleteSeems to me they want a RB they can use in the passing game a bit more.
DeleteI think you're right. Can't be a liability in pass pro either.
DeleteWho ever gets Kyren Williams in the later rounds will be getting a draft steal, the dude just shows up, I don't care what his combine numbers say.
DeleteAgree with you there eMJay. Good player.
DeleteThe vids of Mike McGlinchey posted today are very promising.
ReplyDeleteVery impressive. Whoever posted that picture portraying him as a 250 lb. stick lost what credibility they had. Clearly he looks like he's on track to put himself in a position to start the season. That's about all you could ask for after such a serious injury.
DeleteIt was Grant who made a big deal of it, the other pictures from that day he looked a big bigger. But we need to remember he's 6'8, he's not going to look like Gilbert Brown. I just hope he's working on leverage, getting his lower body strength up as much as possible and work on those hands training, using his long as arms to keep dline off balance and away from engaging.
DeleteYea, McGlinchey could do a better job of being more violent with his initial punch.
DeleteI saw that. Nothing like that 250lb photo I saw few days ago. As he says progress in the process.
ReplyDeleteThe process of making a comment has changed.
DeleteIt has, looks like the only real change (besides cosmetic) is being notified when someone replies to your comment, which is a nice feature.

ReplyDeleteHave to be honest I really hope they can push safety back for a year and re-up Tartt. That would allow them to focus on NB,OL, WR and Edge.
ReplyDeleteIf they can cover the slot then I’m for it… but I’d prefer to push it back.
Did the PFN Mock Draft Simulator. Would be very happy with these results (don't know how Lewis Cine fell all the way to 61, but happy with it. If not him, would be happy with Jalen Pitre even though he might not fall that far either. Which would leave Nick Cross at 61):
ReplyDelete61. Lewis Cine, S Georgia
93. Cameron Jurgens, C Nebraska
105. Khalil Shakir, WR Boise State
134. DeAngelo Malone, EDGE Western Kentucky
172. Marcus Jones, CB Houston
187. Kellen Diesch, T Arizona State
220. Dylan Parham, G Memphis
221. Ty Chandler, RB North Carolina
262. Derrick Deese, Jr., TE San Jose State
