Before I get started, full disclosure, I expect the 49ers and Deebo Samuel to come to an agreement on a contract extension. I don't think Deebo will be traded. And I doubt any extension will be finalised until around training camp.
But an extension for Deebo will cost a pretty penny. There have been a number of huge money contract extensions signed by big name WRs in recent weeks, with average annual values in the range of $30M. Tyreek Hill is now the highest paid non-QB in the NFL and 11th highest paid player. Davante Adams, DeAndre Hopkins and Stefon Diggs are also all in the top 25 highest paid players in the NFL.
Outside of QBs, the only other position rounding out the top 24 top salaries in the NFL is edge - with TJ Watt, Joey Bosa, Myles Garrett, Khalil Mack and Maxx Crosby in the top 24. Which is of course relevant for the 49ers as they have another big name star due for an extension in Nick Bosa, who will likely also be in line for a contract paying around top of the market for his position (also around $30M per year).
When you then factor in that the 49ers are already paying top or near top of the market salaries for the likes of Trent Williams (the 25th highest paid player in the NFL and highest paid OL), Fred Warner (45th highest paid player and 2nd highest paid LB), Arik Armstead (64th highest paid player), George Kittle (95th - and highest paid TE) and recently signed Charvarius Ward (133rd), not to mention still having Jimmy G and Dee Ford on the books currently, the 49ers already have a lot of money tied up in star players on high value contracts.
Even assuming they move Jimmy G before the season starts and get rid of Dee Ford as expected, if the 49ers extend both Bosa and Deebo they will have four of the top 50 salaries in the NFL and 6 of the top 100. That would put them well above the NFL average in terms of money tied up in just a few contracts.
There isn't anything inherently bad in that, and really speaks to the quality of player the team has added in recent years. To be a top team in the NFL you need a few top tier talent players, and those players don't come cheap once they reach their second contract. But good teams also need quality supporting players and depth. And in a salary cap constrained market it can be difficult to consistently surround the top tier players with a quality supporting cast if a significant portion of your cap space is tied up in those few.
For teams that do put a lot of money in a handful of players it is imperative those players cosistently produce at or near the level you are paying them for, or that you get above expectation play from other areas (such as low cost but talented players on rookie contracts). That is exactly what the 49ers have gotten in recent years with the likes of Kittle, Warner, Bosa and Deebo playing at an elite level on low cost contracts, which has offset average or below average returns from some high priced players like Jimmy G, Dee Ford, Kwon Alexander and Weston Richburg (primarily due to injury for all).
So the question then becomes - how much faith can the 49ers place on players such as Kittle, Bosa and Deebo to consistently be on the field and producing at a level comensurate with their contract? One of the elements that makes Deebo so good is the physicality he plays with, but that is also what puts him at greatest risk of not being available for large stretches of his next contract. Add to that the increased usage of Deebo in the running game, which notoriously reduces the career length of a player, and you start to wonder just how much value will you get from the money you'll need to pay Deebo?
And how many high priced players that have had injury issues can you carry? Especially when you are currently slated to not have any first round picks this year and next to help bring in high end talent on cheap contracts. Something, of course, that could be alleviated by trading one of Deebo or Bosa.
So while I fully expect the 49ers to get deals done for both Deebo and Bosa, if the team did decide to move on from one of Deebo and Bosa I could certainly understand the rationale. And if they did move on from one, I think Deebo is the one I would let go - in large part based on the potential injury and availability concerns. But also because I believe Shanahan has the ability to install a highly productive offense even if they were to lose Deebo. I realise what Deebo did last season was historic, and I certainly appreciate the talent he has, but realistically moving forward the 49ers offense will go as far as Lance takes them, not Deebo. Losing Bosa, however, I think would set the defense back to a greater degree.
It's a fascinating situation for the 49ers having two star players up for contract extensions at positions that are now the highest paid in the NFL after QB. Especially given the current salary cap situation. It will be a risk no matter what decision they make.
Bosa might be the one that's untouchable.
ReplyDeleteI think the 49ers chose wisely when they shipped Buckner over Armstead. When you look at their 2021 stats, they're very similar.

49ers WR Deebo Samuel wants to be the highest paid non quarterback because of his impact and versatility. Who can argue after what he did in 2021?
I'll argue against it. It's one year. He doesn't deserve to be the highest paid. I said it before, I wouldn't go over $21.5 million APR. He continues to insist on being the highest paid, trade his ass!
DeleteMy feelings as well. Paying a WR top 25 money is stupid, even if it were Jerry in his prime. Deebo has not stayed healthy his career, 11, 5, and 15 starts in his first 3 seasons and if he's going to be used as a slash-back he will be injured even more often.
DeleteI don't think you should pay a QB anything more than 12% of the cap, but obviously theres only 15 or so legit starters so you really can't be too choosy with their cap money, but a WR heck no. Deebo would be the guy who would get traded to a bad team (you want those high 1sts and 2nds back) and then his career would go no where. He needs to look at Le'Veon Bell as a prime example of how NOT to negotiate your deal and how to realize the grass is not greener on other teams. He was so offended by being offered a franchise tag that he sat out a year, he gets traded to where careers go to die (NYJ), he goes from almost 2k yards from scrimmage to just 1200 and 11 tds to 4, the next year he actually gets a good trade and ends up on KC but too little too late, can't even get to 500 YFS, 2 tds...ends up on Balt & TB in 2021 (again great teams) and 8 games has 100 rushing/30 rec yards and 3 little TDs.
In 3 years he went from just under 2k total yards to 130 total yards and bouncing around between 4 teams all because he wanted to get paid like a WR and not a RB. He never got that massive payday, when you consider Pitt offered him 5/70M and he sat out a year, signed a 4/52M and only made 25 off it, he lost out. If Deebo tries the same we will be looking at a guy in 3 years who's bouncing around between teams on 1 year deals.
I hope Deebo realizes he's shouldn't be getting Hill & Adams money, and that the best chance he has to have a great career is in SF. These players need to read the Golden Goose fable, SF for Deebo is that Golden Goose in that he'll earn so much more over the long run here rather than killing it for a payday now.
Everyone is replaceable, I have seen thousands of Niner players, coaches and owners come and go...Razor's trade scenario seems good to me.
DeleteThat's right, Under. Once the front office sets a value on a player, history shows us that they don't blink. If Deebo won't blink, then it's hasta la bah bye.
DeleteeMJay, the Bell tale really shows how a player taking a hardline stance when the team is willing to call your bluff can blow up in your face. But that cautionary tale goes both ways - the Steelers also lost out by being stubborn and not facilitating a trade while they had the opportunity.
DeleteThere are examples though where players "force" a trade and it works out for both parties if the team realises there is no benefit to them of being stubborn.
Scooter, thanks. This is one of your best articles. Your logic makes total sense. One thing I don’t understand about the Deebo situation is the Instagram business, as he’s always seemed so level-headed in his interviews. In your opinion, what do you think the Niners should willingly accept in a trade for him? Let’s say the Jets offered one of their first round picks and a first round pick from next year? This is an open question for anyone wishing to respond.
ReplyDeleteMy trade involved the Jets picks #10+#38 while we send back #61.
DeleteThanks George.
DeleteI think if they were able to replace the two 1s they gave up for Lance they'd be pretty happy. But given none of Adams, Hill or Diggs netted 2 1sts in return, not sure how likely that is.
Razor's proposal makes sense from a trade value chart perspective relative to recent benchmarks. Bizarrely though, I am not sure I like the idea of getting two high picks in 2022 in return. My reasoning here is the 49ers probably haven't focused on early pick players in draft prep to date. And there isn't a lot of time left to fill the gaps in knowledge.
I would be more inclined to take pick 35, a 2023 1st, plus maybe some mid round picks added.
No guarantee the Jets 2023 1st will be top 10. Likely but not a given.
DeleteI wasn't assuming it would be.
DeleteI can see the obvious benefit of taking the guaranteed top 10 pick. But man, I would hate to waste a top 10 pick this year on a player you didn't have sufficient time to vet.
And who would you be taking, anyway? If we assume one of the picks you pick up is to replace Deebo and the other is to replace who you'd otherwise take at 61... I assume edge and WR? I think Hutch, Thibodeaux and Walker probably gone by 10 and don't like the other edge that high. So WR at 10? Which one? London is probably the closest in terms of what he provides to Deebo at that range. But I would probably take Wilson or Olave ahead of him. Maybe Burks too. But tbh the guy I would most want to replace Deebo is Jahan Dotson, and 10 is too high for him.
Tbh, if they got 10 and 38, and give up 61, I think the team may be better off trading back from 10 if they can.
I really don't think they'd have to trade any picks, just give SF 10 and 38 and SF gives them deebo, even steven.
DeleteTotally trade down if Walker and Thibodeaux are gone. Get that 2023 1st if possible by doing so.
DeleteeMJay, from a trade value chart perspective, that would mean the Jets are paying well over market to get Deebo relative to the Adams, Hill and Diggs trades (noting the 1st and 2nd round picks from the Jets are higher than the ones given up for the other players). If the 49ers can get it, great, but would be a bit of a surprise.
DeleteBut then, Jamal Adams... got 2 1s and change for the Jets... all it needs is one over zealous team.
Razor, that makes sense to me. Though obviously need to find a trade partner which isn't always a simple matter.
Maybe the Steelers want to trade up above the Commanders for a quarterback. They throw us their 1st round pick and next years 1st. We draft Linderbaum and Mack announces his retirement.
DeleteMaybe.
DeleteHill got north of $70 million guaranteed. The most we've ever done is $40 million for our LT. That shows you how far apart the two side are if indeed Samuel wants to be the highest paid wide receiver. No way in hell.
ReplyDeleteDeebo wants to be the highest paid non QB player, good luck with that.
ReplyDeletetrade his ungrateful a-s
ReplyDeleteOn one hand, I would trade Deebo if his agent decides to back the 49ers up against the wall. I believe that a team would possibly give up two #1' for his services. Would you be comfortable with this scenario if contract talks come to a bad place?
ReplyDeleteBecause of Deebo' aggressive and physical playing style, I have to ask myself if his playing style is conducive to longevity.
On the other hand, Deebo offers more to the offense because of his RB ability that other teams would drool over.
I believe that he and the FO office will work out a contract that suits both side.
Longevity is defiantly an issue not only his physical playing style but the beating he takes as an RB. It takes money to attract talent, if one player is getting so much money than that leaves less money for other talent.
DeleteGood to see ya AES.
Like I said, if he's looking for anything over $40 million guaranteed he's gone. Williams is currently that dude and he plays LT. Anyone that thinks we're gonna guarantee Deebo anymore than that is kidding themselves.
ReplyDeleteDeebo's market value, according to Spotrac, is $22.4 million a year.
ReplyDeleteSo awful to hear about Haskins. And while attending a workout with other Steelers players organised by Trubisky... that must make it even more shattering for them.
ReplyDeleteVery sad.
DeleteI was rooting for him, and Steelers seemed pleased by his effort, which is telling of his maturity upon being cut by Washington.
DeleteGil Brandt should be ashamed of himself for the comments he made. Curious of the circumstances of his death...
In any event, trade or no trade, following the insta nonsense 2022 team captain is out the door!
ReplyDeleteOnce the contract negotiations are finished, assuming it ends with Deebo still on the roster, then none of what is happening now will matter and won't impact on whether he is a team captain or not. Deebo is a leader in the locker room.
DeleteRemoving 49ers content from his social media is a storm in a tea cup.
Watching some WR prospects (not because of Deebo, I just like watching WRs) and I think George Pickens is my favourite WR in the draft.
ReplyDeleteNobody likes Moneyball, but the A's have been very effective at it- all the while their rich owners cry poor (they're NOT). But as it pertains to Deebo, you only have so much $ to go around and I would prefer to spread it out as much as possible. Yes, the Rams won, but it will catch up to them in the coming years....... once the WR $ came flying (Jax of all places), I have been pondering Deebo's value. Love him....... but I would take Jets 1 (10) and next years 2, if able......
ReplyDeleteI can see both sides - hard to replace elite level talent, and elite level talent makes the players around them better (so can get away with a slightly less talented supporting cast), but also can't pay everyone and it isn't a great idea relying too heavily on the availability of a few stars.
DeleteIf they extend Deebo, then great. If they trade him, so be it, I get it.
There's no way to justify guaranteeing QB/LT/Edge money for the WR position. Just my opinion.
DeleteI agree Razor. I hate to see him go but his asking price must be really high. I just don't see the leverage he would obtain but taking down his social stuff, so...
DeleteAnyone else see that picture of McGlinchey?
ReplyDeleteNo surprise. The injury he suffered ends careers. Of course he was going to lose weight. The plan for RT is unknown, however we did ok with a bandage there last year. We've still got bandages in Skule, Moore, McKivitz and even Brunskill. The first two nights of the draft should give us an indication on what to expect at RT and for that matter center as well.
DeleteLets not forget he has 5 months to get upto game shape.
DeleteLight isn't always bad, as long as the dude focuses on his lower body strenght he'll be ok, he never was a Bubba Parris or Trent Brown, heck when you see pictures of him next to Staley he looks like he weighs less.
Even in this picture, which was from prior to 2021 season (not sure if it was 2020 or 2019) you can see he doesn't carry a lot of weight for a dude who's 6'8. He's listed at 6'8 and 310, so even if he lost weight he's probably down closer to 285, 280, he's not at 250 or some crazy number otherwise he'd look closer to Lebron than a football player (6'9/250ish).
He can put on 30lbs over the next 4 months easily, he just needs to get in the squat rack and hit the sled.

What you say is true, however... adding that much weight that quickly likely means it is bad weight. And last time he played at a lower weight (2020) he was consistently blown up by the bull rush, so much so the team told him to put the weight back on at the end of the season.
DeleteIt's a concern.

ReplyDeleteDid Collins' weighing 325 do anything here?
49ers have signed WR/ STs player Malik Turner.
ReplyDeleteSamuel wants to hold out we got options.
DeleteI hope it doesn't come down to holding out.
DeleteI don't think Marcus Johnson or Malik Turner are options you want starting. They are training camp bodies with a shot of making the back end of the 53.
DeleteTurner is an ascending player that might have untapped potential, plus we got McCloud. Neither are starters but together they could soften a holdout by Samuel, along with a draft pick.
DeleteUnder, hopefully Samuel won't hold out but if he does I hope he reports to meetings at least if he's not going to do any on field work.
DeleteDon't forget about Aiyuk in all this. If he can take his game to the next level, that will be a bonus if Samuel reports but if he doesn't; we still might have a number one wr ready to go.
ReplyDeleteMan, if they did trade Deebo, I sure would be tempted to take Linderbaum. Looks unreal on film, tested unreal also.
ReplyDeleteYep, Linderbaum would be the perfect selection for this team if somehow they obtain a 1st round pick.
DeleteRita Oak is a piece of krap.
