Examining the fit: DE Kerry Hyder

By Scooter_McG

The 49ers announced they have signed DE Kerry Hyder to a 1-year deal worth $1.5M, with $750K guaranteed. The contract also has up to $750K that can be earned in sack incentives.

In terms of examining Hyder's fit, you only need to go back to 2020 when he racked up 8.5 sacks and 10 TFL (with 18 QB hits) as a member of the 49ers. Hyder led the team in sacks that season, a year in which the team struggled to replace the impact of DeForest Buckner (traded that offseason) as well as early season ending injuries to Bosa, Ford and Thomas.

Hyder parlayed that career year into a 2-year, $6.5M deal with the Seahawks last year, but was released by the Seahawks after just one season in which he provided little impact.

Hyder will be entering his third stint under DL coach Kris Kocurek (Hyder previously played under Kocurek at the Lions as well) and it is with Kocurek that Hyder has enjoyed his most success. In addition to his 8.5 sack season in 2020 Hyder also produced an 8 sack, 11 TFL season (with 19 QB hits) with the Lions in 2016. Unfortunately Hyder would then tear his Achilles prior to the 2017 season which derailed his Lions tenure.

Hyder won't be confused as an elite edge player, but he has proven his ability to be productive within Kocurek's system. He will provide a nice rotation of long, powerful edge rushers that can collapse the pocket with strength while also holding up well in the run game, mixing in with Charles Omenihu and the recently re-signed Jordan Willis. These players complement the elite combination of technique, speed and power of Nick Bosa. Samson Ebukam also remains, offering something a little different as more of speed rusher, but also offers a nice power element to his game. Dee Ford is also still on the roster but at this stage it would seem unlikely he will play in 2022 (and if he does, certainly can't be counted on to stay healthy).

The signing of Hyder would seem to indicate Arden Key's days as a 49ers are over. While Key put together a nice season in 2021 and his presence will be missed, he is a player that benefitted from Kocurek's system. It is likely he will get paid by another team, much like Hyder did in 2020, but may struggle to replicate his success in a different system. Replacing Key with Hyder, as well as having Omenihu get a full offseason in the system, should more than make up for the loss of Key.

  1. John and Kyle are being so ridiculous! Neither one of them will come out at unequivocally declare Trey Lance their starter, and give a full-throated commitment, but they won't! We have to hear it from a leaked report.

If Kyle spent half as much time trying to fool the other 31 teams, because Kyle always loses when it comes to personnel outside of the draft.

If Kyle would just stick to X's and O's, instead of getting his arse handed to him everytime he goes after a Trade or Free Agent, ending up with an injured player (usually)! If Kyle stopped trying to play the league personnel games which he's bad at, and stick to out scheming his competition, he'd be much better off.

Kyle has botched the QB position since the beginning, and he's botching it again, while trying to fake the league out, and nobody's buying it!

    1. Kyle is a brilliant X's and O's guy ... One of the VERY best in the entire NFL, bar none. But he gets bigger down by trying to micromanage the roster, and he's blown it at the most important position on the team, the QB position.

I'm predicting a down year this year, simply based on Kyle's pattern as a HC.

    2. Trey Lance has WAY more talent than Jimmy, so WHY would the 49ers sit him for 2 seasons?

Do you guys really think the NFL believe's Jimmy is the guy agsin this year, after the league's defenses have figured out how to constrict the passing lanes, because Jimmy's passing-chart is ridiculously ONE-DIMENSIONAL!

Jimmy SUCKS, and the NFL knows it! The entire league has seen how Jimmy shrinks under pressure, especially in the postseason!

  2. I'm not upset about the moves the 49ers haver made so far this offseason, but I'm pi_sed-off about the moves that ShanaLynch could have taken, but chose not to this offseason, like MVS, who would have been the perfect #3 WR, or a Za'Darius Smith, who would have made opposing defenses pick their poison, double teaming hi or Nick Bosa? Chandler Jones was there for the taking on a 2-year deal if the Niners hadn't sweetened the pot, and the Niners' Super Bowl odds would be getting better, not slightly worse.

Instead, the 49ers are probably going to have a lot of unspent cap space, and then it becomes IMPOSSIBLE to claim that they gave Trey Lance the best chance to succeed this year.

    Maybe next year?

  3. The 49ers are one of the few teams that don't currently have a high end DEEP THREAT, to take the top off of the defense. McCloud doesn't have DEEP SPEED! And to not have adequate deep speed when your new QB has a HUGE ARM, is malpractice, IMO.

  4. Nice depth signings these last couple of days. Especially like the Sack-Incentive laden contract for Hyder. He should thrive with Kocurek and should be good for another 8 sacks if he stays healthy. :)

Now the draft's focus can be on the Trenches (O-Line & D-Line). Edge-rusher, RT, Guard, Center, Slot CB are still needs IMO.

Disappointed that Jimmy G is still on the roster. Hopefully we trade him for a couple of day 2 2023 picks before the trade deadline. Otherwise, we probably have the best backup QB in the league!

    1. I expect the 49ers aren't done in FA yet either. Would not be surprised to see the following added before the draft:
      - OG/ RT (David Quessenberry would make sense)
      - WR (still a lot of guys out there that could be of interest)
      - CB (like Jason Verrett, though tbh can probably wait until after the draft to sign him - could bring in a slot)
      - Safety (could see Jabrill Peppers being of considerable interest if Tartt isn't re-signed)

All likely on or close to the vet minimum.

  5. The 49ers are acting like the Keystone Cops when it comes to their QB. They are acting like they are hedging with Trey, and that's a real bummer message to send, IMO. Just stop pretending like you are keeping Garoppolo on the roster, because NOBODY believes it!

  6. Fowler: "The Colts NEVER had “substantive” talks about Jimmy Garoppolo!"

  7. Now Niners have significant interior depth on D line. Not enough depth on edge specialists, IMO, especially if they want Arik to play inside full-time. Maybe draft will address that issue.

It took over half the season for Ebukam to make the switch from 3-4 OLB to hands-on-the-ground DE but he did very well towards the end. Someone commented on the last blog suggesting that the Niners might release him for cap savings. No way, IMO. If he continues to show improvement, he may even get an extension by the end of TC when Deebo gets paid.

    1. That's true re Ebukam. He gradually got better as the season progressed and earned more snaps as a result.

When I suggested he could be released I didn't mean I thought he would be. But he is an easy out of a contract at a position that has depth.

    1. Good, the dude was a horrible return man, reminded me of Maurice Hicks returning back in the day, but looking back at his stats Hicks would have been an marketed improvement over James. Hicks was then replaced with Allen Rossum who got averaged 26 ypa, where do we get a guy like that today?

I know Chris Finke got in trouble with Kyle by way of Chase Claypool, but man I wish he would have been given a shot to be the punt returned (at least) outside of BA or even Deebo doing it. Finke at ND was sure handed as anyone and had a lot of wiggle and didn't make boneheaded decisions like RJ used to, especially on kickoffs trying to take it out and getting to just the 15 yard line.

Question - Have the 49ers done enough in free agency?

1,124 fans have responded, and here are the results:

34% of fans (387) say YES, there weren’t a lot of holes to being with

Just because a lot of people are vocal does not make them correct...as we've seen the most vocal participant here is always the least accurate.

    3. Over 1,100 respondents on this poll, so of course eMJay has to denigrate this entire group of fans, simply because they aren't currently in lockstep with the 49ers management.

That pretty well sums up eMjay and ribico!

    4. I guess KNBR's Larry Kreuger is bunched into that - "majority of fans who have subpar football acumen", because Larry is among the majority of the fan base who not only don't think the 49ers have done nearly enough this off-season, but actually believe the 49ers are, right now, worse in the trenches on both sides of the ball, than they were before the start of the new league year!

I mean, the last time Jimmy missed the majority of the season, the 49ers claimed that their biggest priority was to "insulate the quarterback room" with a quality backup and here we are going into Trey Lance's first year as a starter, and low and behold, Nate Sudfeld appears to be penciled in as Trey's Backup!

Nate Sudfeld, who HAS NEVER WON A SINGLE GAME AS AN NFL STARTER!

Serously? Nate Sudfeld is the way they chose to "insulate" the QB position this season? SMH!

    5. What I really don't understand is why 90%-95% of the 49ers fan base aren't disappointed in the 49ers off-season up this point. I really don't!

The 49ers are a worse team now, than they were last season, DESPITE having an additional $25M in cap space to bring in some veteran talent.

Like I've said, they have time to turn this off-season around, but if they allow $15-$20M of cap space go unspent while they take a step backwards on their OL during Trey's inaugural season, that's unacceptable to 90% of the fan base!

It is not the point to be the place for 49reasons therapy sessions - where 49reasons can vomit his same "issues" with the team over and over, at length, drowning out any other conversation. The blog is for everyone, not just you. Its the same problem Sebnynah brought to the other blog - nobody wants to have to sift through volumes of the same persons ranting to get to a comment they may have interest in discussing further.

We welcome differing thoughts here and having debate about the team we support. That isn't what you provide by flooding the comments with the same thing over and over.

    6. Fair enough, Scooter. I'll reign it in, but I am not going to pretend to be excited with a bunch of backend of the roster moves at the league minimum, like you guys are pretending to be.

And I am not going to pretend that ShanaLynch aren't telling fans one thing while doing the exact opposite.

Let's all hope that ShanaLynch get this ship turned around, and get their $27M scrub QB off of their dang roster, before it's too late to use some of that money to fix the OL, which sure looks to be in shambles. It's not fair to Lance for ShanLynch to set him up for failure this season, just because they are too afraid to look like they misjudged Jimmy's value on the trade market!

  14. Three WRs I think I like more than the consensus this year are Jahan Dotson, George Pickens and Romeo Doubs.

Dotson should be a sure fire 1st rounder imo. Pickens has the talent to be a 1st rounder too. Doubs I would happily take late 2nd/ early 3rd.

Skyy Moore and Wan'Dale Robinson also intrigue me.

    4. How big a need is wr tho? I mean JJ finally got healthy and on the field and he looks like a mean #3, think he'll be a good JJ Stokes to Deebo/BA's Rice & TO combo (not to say the deebo and ba are as great as to and Jerry or JJ is as bad as the other JJ, just that he made for a much better 3rd wr than a 1st rounder(.

      Delete
    5. eMJay, my thinking is similar to yours. I think Deebo, Aiyuk and Jennings are set. McCloud would be WR4. They could draft a speed demon, I suppose, for WR5.

      Delete
    6. Yes, it seems as though the first three receivers are set.

      Delete
    7. I don't expect the team to be in play for a guy like Dotson or Pickens (or Watson, who I know a lot of folks want). They have two really good starting WRs already. But I'm thinking one of their 1st four picks will be a WR.

Of the 4 WRs currently on the roster of any note, two are almost purely slot WRs (Jennings and McCloud). Deebo also caught a lot of balls from the slot last season. They have the slot WR position covered.

But if one of Deebo or Aiyuk gets hurt they are really missing an outside WR to step in and replace them. In fact, even if they don't get hurt, they need someone that can rotate in. I don't think either Jennings or McCloud can be that guy. Last season it was Sherfield and I think the team wants more from that guy. Last year the team got really lucky that neither Deebo or Aiyuk missed much time.

As George mentioned, they will likely look to add someone that can provide the speed element. Maybe a guy like Bo Melton is of interest on day 3. But I also think they will look for someone that can step in and start if needed due to injury, whether it be through FA or the draft.

      Delete
    8. The depth at wr in this years draft could push Melton down into round 5 or 6.

      Delete
    9. It's a pretty deep draft in general. Should be able to find some value in the later rounds.

    10. No doubt, a good 5th rounder or later who's got ST upside is fitting.

  15. I have to assume anything from Ford would be a gift... therein, Edge remains a priority. However, if a top C or Tackle was sliding, I would take them. Personally, I like Hyder and Ekubam but recognize the need for explosive speed opposite Bosa- getting Hurst back inside helps and can allow Armstead to get time back outside too.

I would like to see what it takes to get Barkley and Verrett on an incentive-laden deal would be good. I know people weren't keen on D Johnson, but he has been good to the organization and can fill in at the slot too- not sure he makes the final roster though, and hope he doesn't due to strength/depth there.

    1. Agreed with everything but Barkley.

    2. I am not keen to spending on RB's (either draft or $), but if CHEAP, I think he would provide a lot of upside IF he can get and stay healthy- let's face it, Wilson Jr looked done upon return and Sermon showed nothing... Hasty I thought was much improved from 2 years ago. If not Barkley, then they will need to draft another back in the 4th or 5th, and I prefer the emphasis on OL, personally.

      Delete
    3. While I think Barkley is overrated, I also agree he would do well in this scheme (if healthy).

However, what would the team need to give up to get him? And even if they do, he is on a lot more under the 5th year option than the team probably wants to pay. Given that is fully guaranteed, Barkley would have no incentive to negotiate an incentive laden deal. So he's a no go for me.

As for priorities, the way I see it atm their main priorities are edge, interior OL and safety. After that, in no particular order, RT depth, WR depth, TE depth, change of pace RB, slot CB/ CB depth, DT depth (more NT type). I expect a few of those will still be covered through FA with low cost additions.

  17. OK guys, I think you guys handle ONE post a day from me, so hopefully that solves one problem. So I am going to date all of my posts, so that it's clear that I am only posting ONCE a day!

So here's my ONE post for SUNDAY, 3/27/22:

I'm posting in regards to Florio's reports on the likelihood of the Niners flat-out releasing Jimmy GQ.

"49ers cutting Jimmy Garoppolo is most-likely scenario", source tells Mike Florio.

This statement is straightforward and very matter of fact, but here is the most interesting part, and it makes me question why you guys are more upset with your Italian Stallion?

Florio: "Throw in the fact that Garoppolo had the surgery WITHOUT CONSULTING WITH THE 49ERS, and it makes every team that otherwise would be interested in Garoppolo very leery."

Sounds to me like Joe Staley was talking some truth we he called out Jimmy GQ for waiting until March 8th, MORE than FIVE WEEKS after his 3rd straight sup-par playoff game, the NFC Championship game, which occurred on Sunday, 1/30/22! All three DR's who have spoke about the curious timing of Jimmy's shoulder surgery agree that it doesn't take 5 weeks of inaction to determine if surgery is the best option.

This brings up TWO very important points:

    1) Jimmy should have consulted the 49ers prior to surgery At THE VERY LEAST, after all, the 49ers were said to have been actively working on a trade that was beneficial to Jimmy as well.

    and

    2) Jimmy could have opted for surgery at a much earlier date, which would have given him an opportunity to throw sometime in late May, early June, putty considerably more time for potential teams to give him a proper physical before it was so late in the offseason, which is always the biggest.

It sure seems like Jimmy purposely tanked his trade value, IMO, and what was likely most importantly to him, getting to personally pick his best destination, even if that means taking his time to get back to 100%. keep in mind that Jimmy's no trade clause EXPIRED on the opening day of the new league year.

To use a paraphrase: Jimmy GQ essentially "back-stabbed ShanaLynch on the way out the door", and you guys don't even seem to care, because you are so smitten with the injury prone big game choke artist! SMH.

I look forward to the day that ShanaLynch CUT Jimmy unceremoniously, and I am guessing that day is coming shortly after his trade market has been exhausted sometime in July!

And BTW, You guys can mark my words on this prediction, just like you will remember my Jimmy G prediction at the start of the new league year!

And I'll catch you guys tomorrow. GO NINERS, and GO Trey Lance!

    2. As George said, it may be less posts per day, but its still the same posts - just with a slightly different tune. JG lives rent free in your head.

As Matt Maiocco says, there is no benefit to JG intentionally delaying the surgery just to stick it to the 49ers - because he's also making things worse for himself.

The most likely reason for waiting is that his personal doctor(s) told him to first off wait and see how it was healing without surgery. Clearly it wasn't responding the way they hoped, so surgery became the necessary option.

At this stage, yes, the most likely scenario is the 49ers cut JG. If they can't find a trade partner they'll wait until he's able to pass a physical, then cut him.

    4. I think what 49Reasons is saying is that he's going to "cherish" the day that the 49ers simply CUT jimmy!

I think 49Reasons is using "Cherish" as a TRANSITIVE VERB - meaning:

"If you cherish something such as a hope or a pleasant memory, you keep it in your mind for a long period of time."

    5. Only 1 post from you know who...but multiple support posts from "Anonymous".

      Dude, we know its you!

      Delete
    6. And the whole "waiting for surgery to stick it to the team" has been debunked every which way. The injury of his shoulder has been known to be able to heal naturally in some instances, so he was advised to proceed this route...it wasn't taking so they went and had surgery.

If the guy had surgery the 1st of February, its not like he'd be throwing now anyway, he'd have saved a whole 4 weeks recovery time. This isn't Mostert, he could have had surgery asap and returned to the team in December/playoffs, but he waiting over half the season to get under the knife.

The Jimmy hate needs to stop. My fear is this turns into an Alex situation and the known commodity goes off and actually has a better career than the guy who replaced him. We don't know yet if Lance is ready to be THE GUY, so if Jimmy stayed and started next year but had Lance playing a lot more drives, that would be ideal.

RAMILIA SPORTS REPORT (LA Rams): "When we (Ram fans) see a 49ers fan walking around with a Jimmy Garoppolo uniform, we get a smirk on our face. What do we think about Garoppolo? He won 5 meaningless games in 2017, and then he stripped the Niners of that big cap number (5 year - $137,500,000), and then he proceeded to lose the TWO biggest games in the 49ers franchise's history, dating all of the way back to the 1994/95 season! This is Garoppolo's legacy!"

    Ouch!

Maybe the 49ers feel like they can't catch the LA Rams in 2022, so why act with any sense of urgency in getting rid of their brewing QB controversy! After all - on Monday, John Lynch just blew a hole in the 49ers team chemistry, speaking at the NFL's annual owner's meetings. every bad team could use a good old fashion QB controversy!

John Lynch, 3/28): "We can [keep Garoppolo], and like I said, we have prepared for this all along," Lynch said. "It's not easy, but we'll get creative, and we'll figure it out."

"But there's still a want and need for a quarterback of his level of success in our league," Lynch continued. "That's coveted by the entire league, and so we'll continue to listen and see if we figure something out. If not, we're comfortable moving forward with him."

"We've got a lot of time, and we've talked about a lot of things," Lynch responded. "But I do know that competition brings out the best in people. I think it did for both of them last year. And I would expect that would be the case going forward."

When asked about the reports regarding a possible Garoppolo release, John Lynch did the unthinkable! - Lynch: “I don’t foresee that,” Lynch said. “He’s too good a player. I think Jimmy will be playing for us or will be playing for someone else. He’s too good of a player not to be.”

And just like that, ShanaLynch have thrown the 2022 49ers into turmoil, opening up the door for one of the most ridiculous quarterback controversies the league has ever seen. And for what? To hold onto a QB who is thought of as a joke by the the fan bases of our biggest divisional rivals?

I think I speak for the majority of Niners fans when I say: "Please ShanaLynch, do the right thing and CUT JIMMY GAROPPOLO NOW! Please don't put your fan base through another season's worth of division at the most important position on the team!"

Go Niners, and GO Trey Lance!

    1. JG won't be a 49er in 2022. As robber outlines, don't believe everything the team says at this time of year. Telling the league they are going to release him serves no purpose.

    2. Time may not be on their side but they've got plenty of it. Lance will get the 10,000 reps while Jimmy rehabs. Anything can happen between now and then but one thing is certain, Jimmy won't be on the roster in 2022.
