The human super glue known as Dontae Johnson.
The hero of the Packers playoff game, Jordon Willis.
Last but not least, Jeff Wilson Jr.
Welcome back, Kerry Hyder Jr.
Jeremy Fowler @JFowlerESPN · 2m Source: the #49ers and corner Deommodore Lenoir have reached a five-year, $92-million extension.
Glad to see Willis and Wilson come back, Johnson not so much.
ReplyDeleteJohnson is the Rodney Dangerfield of cb's.
DeleteIt's TB27 (The Barnacle)! He's baaaack!
DeleteI'm glad to see Willis back in the building. The other 2 players I could take or leave.
ReplyDeleteNot a single one of these guys were considered players the 49ers must resign, but Willis has potential, and Wilson was one a pretty decent backup RB, although he sure seemed to lose at least 1 step last season, maybe even 2 steps.
As for Dante Johnson .... he seems fairly durable, so at least there is that.
DeletekNBR's Larry Krueger:
Delete"I'm giving the 49ers a C+ for this free agency at best. The 49ers are marginally better at ST, they are probably better at CB, but to me they have taken a step back in the trenches, on both the offensive and defensive lines!"
Some decent depth pieces brought back, likely each on the vet minimum. They'll each be part of the competition for backup spots on the 53.
ReplyDeleteI'm all for depth, and competition.
DeleteHowever, I did just see a report that pretty well sums up my feelings about the 49ers 2022 free agency, so far.
FIVE of the SIX most aggressive teams in free agency so far since the start of this new league year, are all teams that have either a starting QB who is on his cost controlled rookie pay scale, or a veteran QB who is earning below market value.
The 49ers on the other hand, have been one of the least aggressive teams in FA so far, and one would think that, having a starting QB going into the 2nd year of his rookie pay scale, the 49ers could afford to do more during free agency this year.
Now, some people will argue that the 49ers, under ShanaLynch's management, are traditionally never aggressive in free agency, and while there is definitely truth to that argument, it doesn't change the fact the 49ers are being very conservative in FA so far, and in fact, they seem to have an emphasis on getting younger this season, for some strange reason.
Now, the fact of the matter is that .... as long as Jimmy G is on the 49ers payroll, you can't put the 49ers in the category of having a starting QB who is on a cost controlled rookie pay scale, and I guess that's exactly my point. I just don't understand why the 49ers are acting like a team in, as JACK HAMMER put it, a "low key rebuild". That I just don't get it.
Maybe the 49ers are doing the right thing, but I have a feeling that, at this rate, the 49ers are going to take an OBVIOUS step backwards this season, and for a team that was only a slightly better QB away from winning a Super Bowl, that's unfortunate, IMO.
The good news for those of you who will claim the 49ers are moving in the right direction NO MATTER WHAT, is that getting younger does tend to pay off in the long run, so at least there is that.
How is it even remotely a rebuild? They are retaining their core and believe they are improving at the QB position.
DeleteThis just isn't a team that feels they need to splash the cash on outside FAs atm. Just some targeted additions and build/ replenish through the draft.
It's not a rebuild, IMO.
DeleteIt's just that, the 49ers clearly aren't sure exactly what they have in Trey Lance, heck, they haven't even come out and emphatically stated unequivocally, that Trey Lance is the starting QB in 2022. So the 49ers are HEDGING. Rather than being aggressive this offseason, they are holding the cards close to their vest, and waiting to see for sure what they have in Trey Lance, with the idea that they will go all in NEXT season, if they think Trey is ready to take them all the way, which also happens to be Jack Hammers' exact opinion.
We all know that they've lost a lot of players tghis offseason, that they have spent years developing. Draft prospects are great, and every team needs them But most draft picks need to be developed. The 49ers now have gaping holes on their OL, and because Kyle's blocking scheme is so complex, it's hard to imagine a rookie coming in and giving the 49ers what they got from a Laken Tomlinson, or an Alex Mack. The problem for the 49ers is they they should be replacing at least 3/5ths of their OL. Brunskill is a low level starter at RG. In fact, he's probably a better Swing Tackle. Who knows what they are going to get out of McGlinchey, as he's coming back from a serious injury, to say the least. Center seems to be a major question mark as Mack is seriously contemplating retirement. And Aaron Banks wasn't even good enough to suit up most of last season, despite being a 2nd round pick, which is a huge RED Flag! That's 4/5th of their OL. And according to Joe Staley, it only takes one OUT-OF-STEP Offensive Lineman to screw up the entire blocking scheme!
Strong Safety is another huge question mark, and it's one of the tougher positions for rookies to come in and play at a high level. Same goes for Nickle CB.
And I like Willis, but his play last season didn't take pressure off of Bosa. While Willis was productive while he played, he wasn't good enough to draw attention away from Bosa.
The 49ers only have 4 WR on the roster, and one of them is primarily just a Special Teamer. They don't even have the kind of field stretching WR that benefits a QB with a big arm, like Lance.
They lost their most talented RB, and instead resigned a younger, less explosive RB.
In fact, RG3 just called the Dolphins a MORE EXPLOSIVE version of the 49ers.
And they lost their most impactful DT, outside of Armstead.
Everyone I talk to, and I mean EVERYONE, thinks the 49ers are being oddly conservative this offseason, and especially for a team whom many people thought were really close to winning a Super Bowl in 2021. I think the expectation was that the 49ers would be more aggressive this offseason, because that essentially have an additional $20M to spend, along with the additional boost in the league wide salary cap.
It is what it is, Scooter. Maybe being ultra conservative and getting young will be off in spades in 2023.
Oops, I meant they have an additional $25M to spend (Garoppolo), plus the rise in the yearly salary cap.
DeleteThey haven't lost many players this offseason that they hadn't already replaced through planning for the future in the last couple of drafts though.
DeleteThat's the thing you appear to be missing here. Good teams are typically the ones that primarily build for the future through the draft to replace the players they lose. If you hold onto your stars, like the 49ers are doing (bar Buckner), you keep that core intact that makes the team really good and are mostly replacing pieces that benefit from playing with great players. Those guys typically are replaceable and guys you don't want to be overpaying.
I'm not sure why you thought this offseason was going to see the team be aggressive in FA, but to me what we are seeing is pretty much exactly what I expected.
Well, I am glad you are confident in the team replacing 4/5ths of the OL with either unproven players (Aaron Banks), bottom of the barrel starters (Brunskill is a decent enough Swing Tackle, but he's a below average RG), and Center if Alex Mack, who struggled as he relearned Kyle's scheme during the first half of last season (Brendal is unproven), and McGlinchey ( who is coming back from a quad muscle that was torn off the bone).
DeleteThe 49ers should have opted for more continuity on the OL (Tomlinson was a stalwart, as he got better every season and I don't think he ever even missed a snap).
The 49ers have struggled with injuries, so I suppose this is the reason they wouldn't pony up the $3.25M for Mostert, which I think is a huge mistake, as Mostert is by far the most dynamic RB they have had under Kyle, and way cheaper than McKinnon. But on the other hand, they durability apparently wasn't a factor, as the failed to resign arguably their most durable player they have had during the ShanaLynch era, in Tomlinson.
I can accept letting DJ Jones leave, but it is a fairly big loss none the less, as he was a leader in the locker room. I'm not concerned with the interior DL, although I will be unhappy if they lose Arden Key! But again, these aren't the losses that bother me.
I am happy that they splurged on an outside CB and I really like the Ward signing. But I am concerned about CB depth again as they suffered at least 1 big loss in their secondary, letting K. Williams, who is one of the better slot corners in the league while also being a terrific blitzer, walk.
But the biggest issue, and the worst part of this early portion of the new league year is their mishandling of Jimmy G. No question about that. While other contenders are spending cap space in order to shore up as many positions as possible, the 49ers are allowing $27M in cap space burn a hole on their roster! There is no way to justify allowing $20+M to go unspent when you have a young QB who needs every possible advantage, especially when the OL tasked with protecting him has more question marks than the 49ers have had to deal with on their OL since 2017. If the 49ers do allow a substantial portion of their salary cap to be untapped, which seems very likely as long as Jimmy is in their roster, they can in NO WAY claim to be doing everything they possibly can to win a Super Bowl in 2022! 2023? .... maybe!
I am all for getting younger, and developing players, but not at the expense of winning when they are this close!!!!
BTW, am I the only one who thought that Jeff Wilson Jr had lost a step, if not 2 steps last season? I think Wilson is a hard runner, I'll give him that, but the 49ers let their most dynamic RB in a decade walk in free agency, and for what? $3.25M?
DeleteThat's just ridiculous! A Mostert / Mitchell backfield could have easily led the league in rushing!
What a shame!
You know what this was. This was Kyle holding a grudge against Raheem for holding out a couple years ago, because he was underpaid.
DeleteLike I said .... Kyle Shanahan is too emotional to be in charge of an NFL roster. You have to be able to put your emotions to the side when you are making personnel decisions.
I am really upset about a few of the 49ers personnel decisions this free agency, but none more than Mostert and Tomlinson!
DeleteAnd of course Jimmy Garoppolo's contract burning a hole in the 49ers roster! SMH!
I am really excited about the Dante Johnson resigning though! He's a dynamic CB with showdown potential .... oh wait, is the same Dante Johnson that ShanaLynch have cut about a dozen times? It can't be him this early in free agency, can it be?
DeleteThe NINERS are BLOWING IT! They are wasting a wide open Super Bowl window!

Nobody in the 49ers organization could tell free agent signing - Ray Ray McCloud, who his QB will be this year!
DeleteThe media asked Ray Ray about the quarterback position and he's like ... I don't know, I just got here ...
Are you kidding me?
Don't you guys see how that's a PROBLEM? It's absurd, that's what it is!

I'm guessing DeVante Parker just became a low key interesting trade target for a few teams. Not a great WR, but he is good and he'd be a low cost #2 WR for a couple of years.
ReplyDeleteYou're so defensive, Scooter.
DeleteI am not saying the 49ers are going to be bad this year. I think they are going to be a very good team in 2022.
I am just saying that all my friends and aquantences, many of whom are longtime Niners fans, believe the 49ees are not acting like a team who believes they were only a couple plays away from winning the Super Bowl last year.
Like I said, maybe this move to get younger will pay off as soon as 2023.
And I disagree. Not about being defensive.
DeleteThey are absolutely acting like a team that thought they were close to being a SB winner. Keep the team together, add a couple of pieces in FA at the areas they thought they were weakest. No need to spend big as they were already pretty close.
It is actually the way most SB winners operate. The Patriots for example rarely went out and spent big to win. They would just add a couple of pieces here and there while letting guys they thought were overpriced leave and replace them through the draft.
Chiefs did the same to win in 2019, which they built to after drafting Mahomes to replace Smith. Eagles did it in 2016, with their key addition being a rookie QB.
In fact, the teams that go out and spend big have historically not fared well, nor been able to sustain a run.

QB statistical comparison
(Includes postseason)
Baker Mayfield: 61 starts, 61%, 7.3 yards per attempt, TD 96, INT 57, 88.0 passer rating. W-L 30-31
Jimmy Garoppolo: 53 starts, 67%, 8.3 yards per attempt, TD 75, INT 41, 97.6 passer rating. W-L 37-16
NFL GM's toss out W-L record because that's not a QB stat, that's a team stat.
DeleteBut Jimmy is, up to this point, a better QB than Baker, at least statistically, although Baker does have a better arm.
That said, I think 31 out of 32 active NFL GM's believe Jimmy's statistics have more to do with Kyle Shanahan, who runs the most QB friendly system in the NFL, than anything else.
Kyle's is genius schemer, who,'s scheme is also designed to allow his receivers to gain maximum YAC!
To this day, Steve Young is still gobsmacked when he talks about the simplicity of Kyle's system in relation to his quarterbacks.
It's also not a coincidence the the 49ers top 3 receivers are among the greatest trios of all-time when it comes to Yards After the Carry (YAC). Kyle's scheme is designed to get the ball in the hands of his receivers in space, and in stride, and all of his best receivers are run after the catch specialists as well.
That's all about Kyle's scheme combined with his receiver's dynamic skill set.
YAC - Yards after *Catch (not carry)

Probably losing Arden Key.

Kerry Hyder (49ers) one year, $1.5M, $750K gtd, $1.5M salary ($750K gtd), up to $750K sacks incentive

He's not a great player, but he's proven to provide solid production in Kocurek's system.
DeleteYes, it likely means Arden Key is gone. But Arden Key is just another guy like Hyder that benefitted from the system. And unlike Hyder, he also benefitted from having Bosa.
Omenihu, Willis, Hyder. All pretty similar guys that should provide a nice rotation with Bosa and Ebukam. Or, if the 49ers want to free up cap space, could potentially just release Ebukam now.
Scooter, shouldn't Hyder play his more natural position inside rather than on the edge like he where he ended up due to injuries. He's got the versatility to do both but I think he should get more opportunities inside this go around.
DeleteJohn and Kyle are being so ridiculous! Neither one of them will come out at unequivocally declare Trey Lance their starter, and give a full-throated commitment, but they won't! We have to hear it from a leaked report.
ReplyDeleteIf Kyle spent half as much time trying to fool the other 31 teams, because Kyle always loses when it comes to personnel outside of the draft.
If Kyle would just stick to X's and O's, instead of getting his arse handed to him everytime he goes after a Trade or Free Agent, ending up with an injured player (usually)! If Kyle stopped trying to play the league personnel games which he's bad at, and stick to out scheming his competition, he'd be much better off.
Kyle has botched the QB position since the beginning, and he's botching it again, while trying to fake the league out, and nobody's buying it!
In fact, not single team would take the 49ers Garoppolo BAIT! Nobody believe's what ShanaLych are selling, when it comes to their QB, and the 49ers are going cheap this year, that's a fact.
I like Hyder, but there's a reason that Seattle CUT him, and he's only getting just barely more than the league minimum.
Kyle is a brilliant X's and O's guy ... One of the VERY best in the entire NFL, bar none. But he gets bigger down by trying to micromanage the roster, and he's blown it at the most important position on the team, the QB position.
DeleteI'm predicting a down year this year, simply based on Kyle's pattern as a HC.
