The 49ers had two glaring weaknesses that cost them games last year. The special teams and outside cornerback. In free agency they attacked both by signing a new special teams coach, and giving him a couple weapons in, McCloud, Burks and Odum. Charvarius Ward was targeted as their lock down outside cornerback. Let's take a look at what positions the 49ers need to still address as we move towards the draft:
1. Offensive line, specifically LG/RG/RT. Who's in the mix?
Banks/Brunskill/Brendel/McKivitz/Moore/Skule. Assuming Banks takes over at LG, you'd like to see Brunskill beat out by one of McKivitz or Moore so he could go back to a utility role. I think they need to add a rookie guard that has the skillset to take over center next year. I also believe they will bring in a veteran RT to compete against Skule, because I just don't think McGlinchey will be ready. I would not be opposed to them selecting a RT early in the draft, but I just don't think they will.
2. Speed rusher opposite Bosa. Maybe Ford returns but there's no way in hell they can count on that. I fully expect them to take one with their first draft pick, but I also think Kocurek will have them bring in a another bargain bin f/a he can polish up.
3. SS, no Tartt and all they have is Hufanga and Moore. It looks like they'll address the position in the draft, but I wouldn't expect it to happen until day 3.
4. WR, specifically a legitimate deep threat that defenses have to worry about getting behind them. Coincidentally, this draft's cup runneth over with them, and that's where I'd expect them to look. Ray-Ray McCloud should get his share of offensive looks, but he's not a true burner.
So let me get this straight -
ReplyDelete- The 49ers lost their starting LG, who was also an ironman for the team, probably their most durable player
- They lost thier backup RT, and their usual staring RT is coming off of a serious injury, and even when healthy was a bit of a liability in pass pro
- They have a question mark at Center, as their 37 year old Center, Alex Mack, is seriously considering retirement
- They appear to be losing their starting SS who has been playing alongside their FS since college
- They lost their best interior run stopper, who also happens to be a terrific penetrator
- They appear to be losing their Nickle CB, who has been among the league's better slot CB since 2017
- They lost their most dynamic RB, who led the league in YPC last time he was healthy, and dominated in the postseason
- They lost their top TWO Special Team players, Sherfield, and especially Cannon, who led the team in tackles per games played, as a gunner
- They have question marks at both LG and RG
- They only have 3 WR's under contract
All of this, and you think that adding 1 premium CB and 2 Special Teams specialists, and a journeyman DT is adequate for a team with Super Bowl aspirations? That's crazy talk, IMO.
BTW, even if they improved ST, which is questionable, ST won them a postseason game. How does that move the needle?
I am all for improving ST because all 3 phases are important, but their is no way that simply adding a couple players to ST after losing 2 of your best players on ST, is going to be enough to get them past the Rams, Bucs, Bills & Chiefs, to name at least four teams, after considering how much talent the 49ers are set to lose this year, as well as their lack of investment. And the idea that they are going to patch ALL of these holes in the draft when they don't even have a 1st round pick is an absolute PIPE DREAM. If they are needing to draft 4 or 5 immediate starters for this season, that's a really bad plan, IMO. And are we supposed to believe that Aaron Banks, who wasn't even good enough to suit up for most of their games last season, despite being a 2nd round pick, is suddenly a solid starter in year 2?
The 49ers are currently the 5th or 6th best team in the NFL, and maybe you guys are satisfied with being the 5th best team in the NFL, but the majority of Niner fans want the 49ers to take a bigger swing at the fences, like the last few Super Bowl champions did before they got over the hump.
The fact of the matter is that, outside of the QB position, the team has gotten worse this offseason, not better, and that's why 75% of their fan base is currently upset at the Niners' FO. They should be upset at Kyle Shanahan the GM. Kyle Shanahan is a great HC, but he's not a very good GM.
Now, having said all of this, they still have time to make moves to shore up their roster, but they MUST cut Garoppolo loose if they hope to have enough cap space to make the necessary moves.
DeleteThere is still plenty of time left in the off-season to get this ship turned around, but THE CLOCK IS TICKING!
It'll be extremely difficult for a rookie to win a starting role on this team. It's too good.
DeleteThat's right, Razor.
DeleteBut it's more like: it's really hard to find 3 players who are even talented enough to become instant starters, especially on the 49ers OL!
Joe Staley says that, in Kyle's scheme (zone blocking) the ENTIRE Offensive Line has to work in PERFECT sync, in order for them to be effective. He said if ONE Offensive Lineman is a step out of sync, the ENTIRE scheme BLOWS UP!
And the 49ers now have serious question marks at FOUR of their FIVE offensive line positions, and you guys are suddenly acting like the OL isn't important.
It boggles the mind!
I think we see more of Charles Omenihu this year, he's percentages are pretty good he just doesn't get a lot of snaps. Hopefully he can be the 1st and 2nd down guy and a healthy (crossing all fingers and toes) Ford can be the 3rd down speed guy and only gets like 20 snaps a game.
ReplyDeleteOmenihu is a guy to keep an eye on. He did look pretty good towards the end of the season. He's kinda like the forgotten man.
DeleteAnd let me give you an example of a good team being aggressive in FA in hopes of becoming a great team:
ReplyDeleteThe Bengals new they had to improve their OL if they had any hope of getting over the hump in 2022. So what did they do already this offseason? They have THREE new, quality starters on their OL ALREADY! That's how you go for it, and take a swing at greatness!
Meanwhile, the 49ers FO seems to be on vacation, or on the golf course or something like that. Get you're act together, ShanaLynch, and make it happen!
About time. They already totaled Burrow's knee by their ineptitude up front. Now it'll take time for them to gel. Gonna be interesting to see how it all works out. I believe two 1st round picks at LT and RT are enough to get you there. You don't need top picks across the line to win it all.
DeleteRazor, the 49ers don't have any 1st round picks until 2024.
DeleteThat's part of the issue. If you're going to give up extra 1st round picks in order to draft a young QB you better be darn well ready to play that young QB, AND you better be willing to spend money in free agency. That's the formula for success. If the 49ers end up carrying a decent portion of Jimmy's cap space over to 2023, that doesn't help them this year. And this year they should be doing EVERYTHING they can to help Trey Lance! That's a fact!
Hey Razor, I need to make one more point. I know you are aware that the Falcons have a record amount of dead cap space this year, after trading Matt Ryan. Do you know why this is?
DeleteBecause the Falcons RESTRUCTURED Matt Ryan's contract for the last 3 straight years. That's why they are in dead cap hell. This is a very good example of the risk of restructuring contracts and converting salaries into bonuses. Sometimes it's necessary to restructure contracts, but restructuring contracts just because you are too stubborn to get what you can get, or cut, your $27M QB, is BAD football business!
And Matt Ryan's dead cap mess is a shining of example of this risk.
Dude, you don't restructure players that aren't going to be on your team for a long time.
Delete"And let me give you an example of a good team being aggressive in FA in hopes of becoming a great team:
DeleteThe Bengals ..."
Sounds like you have your new favorite team. Go.
I have a good read on the pulse of the Forty Niner Faithful right now, and I can assure you guys that 80-85% of the fan base is very unhappy with the way the 49ers off-season has gone so far.
ReplyDeleteThis is a team that is supposed to have a wide open Super Bowl window, and they are more busy playing footsie with their $27M injured QB whom they have been trying to replace for THREE YEARS, than they are in actively trying to make their roster objectively better this off-season, even though they should have a DISTINCT ADVANTAGE over a team like the Rams, because the 49ers have a you QB who is playing on a cost-controlled rookie pay scale.
Everyone knows that having a cost-controlled young QB is the most efficient way to build out a Super Bowl winning roster.
Not only are they not trying to do everything they can to make Trey's job easier, they are actually going in the opposite direction in terms of their OL, which is kind of important with a young, inexperienced QB .... don't you think!
You guys need to stop using the fact that Deebo Samuel almost singlehandedly carried this team to the NFC Championship game (along with their defense) despite finishing THIRD in their division, and start acting like a fan base that wants this team to get over the hump in order to actually WIN the Super Bowl!
The 49ers cannot go into this season hoping that Deebo can replicate what he did to carry this team in the second half of last season. Because the odds of Deebo putting this team on his back and doing something the league has never seen before, for a second straight season, are not very good.
What they 49ersbshoykd be doing is turning over every possible stone in order to make Trey Lance comfortable, and that starts with the OFFENSIVE LINE, and includes a field-stretching WR, another quality pass catching TE, a tone setting STRONG SAFETY, and speed rushing DE opposite Bosa, another quality Nickel CB, another quality RB, and if we are being honest, probably another punter as well!
ShanaLynch either need to take a sh_t, or get off the pot!
I hope someone is pinning these posts by he who shall not be named so it can be thrown back in his face...oh who am I kidding, the guy has zero humility, is massively arrogant and will not acknowledge his 99.9% failure rate on his "hot" takes.
ReplyDeleteDude couldn't even honor his bet to stay away 365 days...only made it just under 2 months.
Well he did overvalue Saquon Barkley's NFL potential. I'll never forget how much he loved him.
DeleteLike I said, eMJay, I was mostly right about Garoppolo last year. The 49ers may have gone on a run, but that run had everything to do with Deebo and the defense, and nothing to do with Jimmy.
DeleteIn fact, if you look at Jimmy's numbers over the final 5 games, it's EASY to conclude that Jimmy probably cost the 49ers another Super Bowl. If they had just had a better QB down the stretch last year (cough, Trey Lance, cough) they would probably have won the Super Bowl.
You're nuts! Did you watch the week 18 game against the Rams? I remember a 38 yard dart to the boundary to hit Samuel for 43 yards that led to an overtime win.
DeleteAnd the problem for ShanaLynch is that, other teams saw what Niner fans saw again last year. Jimmy Garoppolo absolutely fell on his face down the stretch last season, just as he did the last time he was "healthy", in 2019.
DeleteNobody wants that. There isn't a another NFL team in the league that looks what Garoppolo has accomplished when the games really matter the most, in December and January, THROUGHOUT his short career, and says to themselves, "that's what we need to get over the hump".
NOBODY! Sure, somebody's going to be willing to give Jimmy a chance to win a QB competition, but NOBODY is going to take on Jimmy's contract and ALSO give the 49ers significant draft picks in return for a QB who has a history of choking down the stretch, which is the time when good players create a legacy for themselves.
And the sooner that ShanaLynch realize this and cut their losses, the better off this team will be moving forward!
Jimmy's final 5 games of 2021 (12/23-1/30 - including the playoffs):
Delete4 TD's, 7 INT's, 63% comp, 227 YPG, 72.1 Passer Rating
Tell me again how good Jimmy was down the stretch, Razor?
"...a QB who has a history of choking down the stretch..."
DeleteI thought the QB under discussion here was Garoppolo, not Rodgers
How about down the stretch in 2019, when Kyle Shanahan refused to let Jimmy attack teams through the air for fear of turnovers? Do you guys need a reminder of that? How about a wide-open Emmanuel Sanders to win a Super Bowl?
DeleteThe NFL has spoken about how they feel about Jimmy during this crazy offseason, guys, and you Jimmy Garoppolo apologist's have already lost this argument.
DeleteHow about Jimmy's 2021 prime-time numbers?
ReplyDeleteDo you want to see those also, Razor?
Que the Razor, eMJay, and ribico Jimmy G excuse brigade!
DeleteNot excuses. Jimmy ain't the man on 1st or 2nd downs, but the dude was Mr. 3rd down. He's had many clutch moments. You just refuse to acknowledge them.
ReplyDeleteWhat do they call 3rd down, 49Reasons? The money down!
ReplyDeleteLet me say this again. Legacies are made in the postseason, and that's true of all professional sports.
DeleteTom Brady isn't considered the GOAT because he's a 3rd down specialist. He's the GOAT because he plays his best football in the biggest games.
Same goes for Joe Montana. Joe always played his best football in the biggest games, including going 4-0 in the Super Bowl, with 12 TD's, 0 INT's, and 3 Super Bowl MVP's.
Jimmy is the opposite of a big game QB. That's Jimmy's legacy now, which is why nobody wants to trade a lick for him! He's always hurt, and he always shows up SMALL in the big games, which is the main reason the 49ers haven't won a Super bowl under Kyle's management.
The 49ers have been close, but unfortunately "close only counts in horseshoes and hand-grenades!"
I would ask you guys why anyone would give a hoot about Jimmy's 3rd down prowess in the regular season, when HE CAN'T HIT THE SIDE OF A BARN in the postseason, but the rest of the league has already answered this question over the last 2 week.
DeleteThe answer is: Nobody gives a hoot about Jimmy's 3rd down efficiency when he is always hurt, and when he's the type of QB that SHRINKS UNDER PRESSURE, in the biggest games, and most important moments! NOBODY!
And what's really sad is that Jimmy didn't even need to be GREAT in the 2019/20 and 2021/22 postseasons, in order for the 49ers to have a good chance of winning both Super Bowls. All Jimmy needed to be was "GOOD", and the 49ers would probably have 2 more Lombardi Trophies.
DeleteBut no, asking Jimmy to be merely GOOD in the postseason was apparently too much to ask of him. And the same goes for Prime-Time games as well. And to ask him to be durable ..... well, we all know the answer to that one as well!
"Tom Brady isn't considered the GOAT because he's a 3rd down specialist. He's the GOAT because he plays his best football in the biggest games.
DeleteSame goes for Joe Montana. Joe always played his best football in the biggest games, including going 4-0 in the Super Bowl, with 12 TD's, 0 INT's, and 3 Super Bowl MVP's."
LOL. Comparing JG with the 2 unicorns, the 2 GOATs. I'll give you that, JB doesn't come close in comparing with them. Neither do the 100s of QBs who have played the position in the last 40 years either.
Here's another thought questioning your logic. You go on ad nauseum about how bad Jimmy is but we go to a Super Bowl and again come within a game of the Super Bowl in spite of him. THEN you tell the head coach to shit or get off the pot. Do you see the disconnect there?
ReplyDeleteRazor, I've said that ShanaLynch have done some really good things when it comes to build a quality roster. The problem is that they have botched the most important position on the team, and this is probably the sole reason they haven't won at least ONE Super Bowl during their tenure.
DeleteAs a general rule, I am quite happy with a lot of the things they've done over the years.
I am very grateful that JOHN LYNCH is a defensive specialist, because he's done a really good job with the defense. Unfortunately Kyle hasn't been nearly as good with the offense. While they have found some really good players, the offense has consistently lagged behind the defense YEAR AFTER YEAR. Robert salah outshined Kyle as an offensive coach, and now DeMeco Ryans is doing the same thing.
I believe Kyle's inability to control his emotions, along with his inability to properly evaluate the QB position, has been holding his team back from what otherwise might be greatness, and that's a real shame, because nobody remembers who came in 2nd or 3rd or 4th place.
And the thing about Kyle is, HE'S A BRILLIANT OFFENSIVE X's & O's guy!
DeleteHis offenses should be TOP FIVE every season, and likely would be if he were better at things like - keeping his emotions under control and managing the QB position.
Instead, Kyle's offense lags behind his defense every season, without fail!
And one more thing about your mentality, that I find puzzling. The fact that the 49ers came up short AGAIN this season, probably had something to do with their playoff seeding, don't you think?
ReplyDeleteYou seem to be completely ignoring the 49ers struggles during the regular season, which saw them fall to 3rd place in their own division. The fact that they had to play THREE playoff games because of their poor showing during the first half of the season, and thus likely ran out of steam VS the Rams, seems completely lost on you, Razor.
I mean - THREE *ROAD PLAYOFF GAMES!
DeleteReasons seems to think a SB victory is a given year after year. IF ONLY SHANLYNCH DIDN'T CHOKE!
DeleteMeanwhile the rest of the fanbase were electrified over last seasons run. Reasons was stewing, nowhere to be found here until he came crowing after the final loss. What a putz.
I understand that the truth hurts, eMJay, but by failing to recognize the truth, usually only makes these matters worse, which is something that seems completely lost on you, dude.
ReplyDeleteWe all know if I was simply regurgitating the talking points that you agree with, eMJay, you wouldn't be acting like someone who simply can't come up with a valid counter-point!
ReplyDeleteDo yourself a favor and take a debate class at your local community college, or something .... anything.
And the Vikings sign Za' Darius Smith for a REASONABLE 3 years, $42M. Now the Minnesota Vikings are being more aggressive than the 49ers? Pathetic!
ReplyDeleteMaybe the 49ers can find a two-way starter in the draft ... without 1st round pick. They might have to at the rate this offseason is going.
ReplyDeleteSMH!
The 49ers MUST CUT Jimmy G. now.
ReplyDeleteGet it done, Niners! Take the PR hit now, and move the F on!
49Reasons be patient trust the process like when we finally took Trey what was the most wise decision of JL and KS regarding getting finally a QB who is capabele of letting this Offense be lethal.
ReplyDeleteIts just crazy offseason like crazy pre draft last year.
Robber, we'll have to see. Trey has the arm, does he have the intangibles? On the plus side, he runs a mean scout team.
DeleteCan he stay healthy? Getting nicked after two just appearances last year doesn't bode well.
The thing is, none of us know for certain, we'll just keep our finger crossed that this *was* the most wise decision. If not, Reasons will really have something to bellyache about.
We can't allow for a QB controversy to brew. It's not fair to Trey, and Jimmy will never go for it anyways. Jimmy already told us how hard last season was for him, during his farewell tour. half the fan base was calling for Trey all season long. And half the fan base blames Jimmy for the loss (including me). Jimmy is NOT coming back to potentially play second fiddle to trey, so the 49ers ought to do what's best for trey, Jimmy, and the entire team, and CUT Jimmy now!
Deleteribico, if Trey wasn't the right decision, then somebody needs to be fired, and that somebody is Kyle. If Trey doesn't work out, that's a disaster. And if they never even give Trey a chance to be the guy, that's even a bigger disaster.
DeleteKeeping Jimmy while Trey "develops" barely worked for one season, but it can't ever happen again! It's just asking for the same kind of disfunction we saw early last season, only worse!
Besides, Jimmy is a fool if he comes crawling back with his tail between his legs. That would not be a good career move for him. He would be a laughing stock!
"We can't allow for a QB controversy to brew."
DeleteThe only QB controversy in danger of brewing next season is the possibility of Trey not living up to the expectations placed on him by excitable ADHD Reasons-type fans.
Reasons, what are your expectations for Trey next year? Start and play in all 17 games? Winning record? Playoffs? How many rounds?
How many seasons do you give him before calling for ShanaLynch's heads?
In my eyes, if trey doesn't get to the NFC Champ its a failure of a season. This team with a full(ish) season of JG has gotten to that level in both so expectations should be the same as the all these haters say that Trey would have got there this year.
DeleteAnd when you add in that Seattle is in total rebuild, Az can't be taken seriously and LA lost a couple guys, as well they just paid Stafford a huge amount so interesting to see when that will kill their cap.
BTW Razor you should give 49Reasons the title of official blog mascot cuz he keeps the blog rolling.
ReplyDeleteHigh voltage AC DC Hahaha
Thanks Robber, I'll take that.
DeleteLast year they did a great job bringing in starters and key backups on vet minimum contracts once the FA market dried up. They'll do the same again this year.
ReplyDeleteStill a lot of good secondary players available and I expect we will see one or two added. Also a DE or two, as well as an OG, RT and WR.
These guys will compete with the young guys already on the roster, and the guys they draft.
Scooter, in as far as the QB position goes, you do agree that the 49ers can't bring Jimmy back this year?
DeleteYou can see how that would be a recipe for disaster, right?
Jimmy G won't be on the roster this season at his current salary. The cap space will be needed elsewhere.
DeleteAtm there is no reason for worrying about it.
Fair enough, Scooter, but I think there is more to it than simply the money, although that is definitely a factor.
DeleteBTW, Cheers to you down in Melbourne! I didn't realize you were outside of the continental USA.
Having him back on a backup salary would be fine financially, but potentially cause some friction in the locker room. However, I suspect that would be something this team could overcome.
DeleteBut I don't see JG willingly reducing his salary to that of a backup, so I just don't think it will ever be something we need to worry about.
My guess is the team either trades him around the time of the draft, or they trade/ release him before training camp (as that is when they will need the cap space).
When you refer to the Niners needing cap space around the time of training camp I assume you are referring to extending Bosa and Samuel?
DeleteI agree with with in sentiment, Scooter, BUT Jimmy's $27M cap hit in 2022 is A LOT MORE than they will nee to extend Bosa and Samuel.
Keep in mind, when the 49ers extend contracts, the first couple years end up being much lower cap hits.
I am guessing then, that you are assuming they will carry over part of the money to 2023, despite having a chance to go all in this season?
Or let me ask you this. If the 49ers end up carrying a substantial portion of Jimmy's cap hit over to next season, is that aggressive enough for a team with Super Bowl aspirations? I say it's not. I say the 49ers should spend every last penny of cap space this season, in order to best assure that the 49ers transition to Lance is as smooth as possible.
DeleteThe OL is kind of in shambles right now, and the OL is my biggest concern. I don't see how this much uncertainty on the OL breeds any kind of confidence in their ability to give trey lance his best chance of success.
They will need to sign their rookies and extend Deebo (and probably Bosa) before camp. That's when they will need the cap space.
DeleteThey will also want to keep cap space available for in-season transactions and carryover to 2023. But training camp isn't the deadline for that. Start of the season is.
Again, as I have outlined multiple times, JG is not what is holding them back from signing FAs.
DeleteYour not really answering my question, Scooter.
Delete- If the 49ers end up carrying a significant portion of their cap space over till next season, effectively deferring cap space that could be used to help you Trey Lance, you don't think it matters if they go the extra mile to make sure trey Lance is as comfortable as possible?
And here is another specific question: Are you comfortable with the 49ers Offensive Line right now? I really want to get you on record about the OL because everyone I talk to says the 49ers are now considerably weaker on the OL, and I think we can all agree that would be unfair to do for Trey Lance to take a step back this season at the OL, while carrying any significant cap space over to next season?
And BTW, I don't think I've ever seen the Niners' fan base this upset on social media, at this stage of the offseason.
DeleteThe common theme seems to be the lack of urgency in putting the best team possible around young Trey Lance ... and I have to agree with this sentiment!
We all agree that a rookie pay scale can be a big advantage, UNLESS the money goes UNUSED, in which case the advantage obviously would then get carried over into next season, not this season - which is Trey first season as the official starter.
I just want to be clear about how you guys feel about an unused portion of the cap being deferred during Trey first season as the starter.
And again, the OL, which seems to be the worst it's been since 2017, at least on paper.
DeleteWhat I am trying to demonstrate to you is that JG's contract being on the books now and the team's decisions in FA are separate things. Having JG on the books right now is not changing how they approach FA.
DeleteDo I think they should do a little more in FA? I would have liked an interior OL to replace Tomlinson and let Banks and Brunskill battle it out for the RG spot. But honestly, I never thought the team would be going all out in FA this year - just look back at the article I wrote about prior to FA. That isn't their way. And while it is sexy to sign heaps of big name FAs, I also don't think it is the best way to build your team once you already have a good one.
And yes, I realise the Bucs and Rams have recently won SBs by going with an "all in" approach. But the Bucs were doing it with a very experienced QB at the end of his career so it was always a short term push, while the Rams have primarily done their business via trade, not FA - i.e. using draft picks to acquire talent.
OK Scooter, can I ask you about specific players/positions?
DeleteLike RT - Mike McGlinchey. How do you feel about the starting RT position? seems like a huge question mark, right?
How about RG - Daniel Brunskill? Is that a question mark?
How about LG - Aaron Banks? He wasn't even good enough to suit up for the majority of 2021.
How about Center? Last we heard, Alex Mack was leaning retirement, or at least seriously thinking about it. He'll be 37 this year, that's ANCIENT for an OL, isn't it?
DeleteOops, sorry some of that was redundant.
DeleteJust tell me if you think their OL is worse, at least on paper?
Yes or No?
Yep, it looks like K'Wuan is gone!
DeleteThe 49ers aren't just losing veteran starters, they are losing veteran stalwarts, who have been here since the biginning.
If any money goes unspent this season, I think it's a fire-able offense.
DeleteI thought they would (and still think they will) add an OG in FA to compete for one of the starting spots with Banks, Brunskill, etc.
DeleteAs for RT, as I outlined in FA primer, I didn't think any of the RT options were that great in FA. I still think they will add someone, but it will be someone cheap to compete with Moore and potentially a rookie.
At center, I have always thought Mack would return, but that they should draft a center high that can be added to the competition at OG this year.
As for whether the OL is better or worse, the loss of Tomlinson makes it look worse right now. But they also already planned for his departure by drafting Banks last year. We have no idea at this stage whether Banks is any good. We'll see. But that is also why I think they will bring in a vet to compete.
Btw, drafting for the future is something good teams have done for a long time.
DeleteWell, it's official. Jack Hammer thinks the 49ers are acting like a team in a light rebuild mode, more concerned about getting younger this season, as opposed to necessarily getting better.
DeleteMore question marks than we all assumed they would have this offseason. Jack Hammer calls it a "Low key rebuild".
I honestly don't know how anyone can look at the players the niners have lost so far, compared to the players they've signed, and not assume that the 49ers are likely going to take a step backwards this season, even with an upgrade at QB.
Delete"Well, it's official. Jack Hammer thinks the 49ers are acting like a team in a light rebuild mode, more concerned about getting younger this season, as opposed to necessarily getting better."
DeleteRebuild? Here is what Hammer has actually been saying over at PD:
"San Francisco has a very talented and deep roster. Less than two months ago they held a 10-point lead on the road over the eventual Super Bowl champions. Although they couldn’t finish the game out, San Francisco has already addressed the areas which played the biggest role in the loss."
"On defense, the 49ers were often forced to play soft coverage due to their personnel on the outside. They addressed this with the signing of Charvarius Ward. This addition means San Francisco can now play tighter coverage across the secondary without being forced to use as much safety help."
"As fans fretted over the lack of movement with Jimmy Garoppolo, the 49ers worked to build their roster back into a contender in the NFC."
"The 49ers are coming off a 10-win season in 2021, which saw them reach the NFC Championship Game. They have 18 of the 22 starters from that game. In addition, the 49ers are one of the deepest teams in the league with several young players looking for their chance."
It's one thing to have your own opinions, it's another to spread lies on what others are saying.
I don't think it is intentional, but it's not the first time 49reasons has described Jack's thoughts in a manner that seem completely incongruous with what Jack said. I think there is a lot of confirmation bias in how 49reasons interprets what people say.
DeleteJack Hammer literally said what I told you he said (low key rebuild), on a recent YouTube video. He also said:
Delete"If Trey Lance can't beat out Jimmy in training camp, the 49ers have FAR BIGGER problems to talk about than having Jimmy Garoppolo still being (and -$26M less in cap space) on the roster."
And this is another good point. If the 49ers bring Jimmy G into camp, and he beats out Lance at this stage, that's the worst case scenario of all possible scenarios, for the 49ers, IMO!
If the 49ers spent three 1st round picks, and a 3rd round pick on a QB who can't even beat out the QB he was literally drafted to replace, then the 49ers need to clean house inside their scouting department (fire Lynch, Peters) and take all control of their roster away from Kyle Shanahan, which probably should have already happened, IMO.
I think we can all agree with this. The 49ers have a VERY good team. However ..... they aren't soooo good that they can afford to spend three 1st round picks, and a 3rd round pick on a backup QB, and still remain competitive.
Last year, ShanaLynch spent the top of their 2021 draft on developmental prospects, while the other top teams drafted players who could make an impact immediately, and this error in judgement was almost certainly a factor in the team ending up with such a poor seeding in the postseason. And we all know, that poor seeding, along with the bad version of Garoppolo, cost the 49ers a Super Bowl last season.
Jack Hammer also said that : "everyone who wants the 49ers to go all in this year .... that's what they are going to do NEXT YEAR"
DeleteCall it "confirmation bias" all you want, the fact of the matter is that Jack Hammer's statements are EXACTLY in-line with my comments, so it's clear that Jack agrees with those of us who believe the 49ers are sending the message that they AREN'T all in this season!
MARK MY WORDS:
DeleteThe 49ers OL is going to take a significant step BACKWARDS this season!
BRAKING NEWS: The 49ers are working on a 5 year extension for Jimmy Garoppolo, because they no longer value the three 1st round picks (plus a 3rd) which they spent to draft Trey Lance. Rumors are that Trey Lance is not expected to become the starter until his second contract at the earliest.
DeleteThat was satire, because I wanted to end my final discussion about Jimmy Garoppolo as satire. I am officially done tal;king about this guy, and the entire saga. Never in my life have I seen such an average QB become such a polarizing figure among a fan base. Never have I seen a HC/GM with such little conviction on their OWN draft picks. Never before have I ever seen such an NFL front office create such a distraction, and look so inept in the process.
DeleteIf Jimmy is still on this team by the time training camp comes around, I stand with a large portion of the fan base who will simply TUNE the 49ers out. There is absolutely nothing good that come out of holding onto Jimmy for another season, so why would I be interested in following such a farce. I understand that, it's hard to look away from a traffic accident, but that's exactly what I plan on doing. I will essentially be boycotting this football team, since I started following this team back in the early 80's. Through thick and thin, I never foresaw a situation where I would be so disgusted with a 49ers FO, that I simply had to tune out for my own sanity, but low and behold, that's exactly where I will be at if Jimmy is still on this roster in training camp. But don't let that that I will be silent. I will be one of the most vocal anti-Garoppolo fans around, because I will consider myself to be on the right side of history. I have no doubt that, if the 49ers bring Jimmy back again in 2022, that the results will be nothing short of disastrous, so why would I want top follow that? This situation has already had negative effects for the 49ers, IMO, and so some of the damage has already been done. But the damage done so far, will be a drop in the bucket compared to the consequences that will follow, if the 49ers keep Jimmy around this season.
OK, so that's it. I'm done talking about this Jimmy Garoppolo now, for as long as he is officially on the 49ers roster! I am washing my hands of this average-to-below-average QB, and to be honest, I already feel better!

I'm done talking about a certain QB, but I still can't believe the 49ers are going cheap on the offensive line, with a young "franchise" QB taking over the reigns.
DeleteI do think John Lynch is on his way out soon.
"Jack Hammer literally said what I told you he said (low key rebuild), on a recent YouTube video."
DeleteThat goes against everything, and I mean *everything* he has put his name on in print.

Seeing someone give in to a mania like that is almost frightening, isn't it?
I would dearly love for JG to return next year as the starter. Booom!
ReplyDeleteAAAAMEENNNN
DeleteThat aint happening, guys, nor should it. That would be a disaster, not to mention humiliating for Jimmy.
DeleteThis is not an option at this stage so you can put that idea in the round filing cabinet (garbage).
You guys should do yourselves a favor and tune into
ReplyDeleteHaberman & Middlekauff on YouTube at 3:00 PM today.
They will be talking about what's best for trey Lance at this point.

Also - KNBR's Larry Krueger and NinerNoise's Akash Anavarathan will be discussing the Garoppolo debacle at 8:00 PM.

Maybe we should just call it what the SF Chronicle is calling it:
Delete"The Jimmy Garoppolo Hostage Crises, Day 50"
Also, just a heads up: There is a big social media blitz calling for 'JOHN LYNCH TO BE FIRED' right now, and I just want to make it clear that I don't think Lynch is responsible for this Garoppolo debacle that has transpired.
ReplyDeleteI'll just leave it at that
DeleteMaybe Jimmy and Don Yee could have done things differently regarding the shoulder operation if i where the FO i would stop being a lakey of Jimmy and his agent.
ReplyDeleteWell, thank God you're not a part of that. Btw, do you watch Grant Cohn's youtube videos? If not you might like them. I think you're the type of fan he aims them at.
ReplyDeleteIn response to 49Reasons' headsup about the social media blitz to get John Lynch fired
DeleteI've previously characterized Reasons as Grant on meth.
DeleteShame what Grant's evolved into. I noticed his father stopped appearing on his "show" months ago.
DeleteIt's not Grant Cohn's audience I am talking about. It's the WHOLE of social media! I would say 80% of the fan base are very frustrated with this offseason so far, and that's a conservative estimate!
DeleteK’Waun Williams now a Bronco
ReplyDelete30 years old and expensive.
DeleteThey have the two rookies, eman and Chavarius Ward, not to mention they'll def look DB in the draft and who knows what happens to Verett.
I am thinking another one-year contract for Verett, incentive laden.
DeleteYeah, Verrett on an incentive-laden contract is a good idea,
DeleteThe slot fade got K'waun.
I can't help but think Marcus Jones will be a guy the 49ers look closely at in the draft.
DeleteI think April 1st 830 am will be Jones' pro day.
Delete1995!
ReplyDeleteOK, so free agency has been a big letdown for me so far, but I am ready to pivot to the draft now. It's too bad the 49ers don't have a 1st round pick, but they did work the compensation pick formula like a champ, so that's a big plus!
ReplyDeleteHere are my list of the 49ers 8 top needs, in order:
1) SS
2) DE
3) RG
4) WR
5) C
6) RT
7) CB
8) RB
By the way guys:
ReplyDeleteW-L are not QB statistics. Those are TEAM statistics. Good teams can win games with average QB play, but when it comes to Super Bowls .... it's much harder for good teams to win a Super Bowl with average QB play. Look no further than the Rams. They went far with Jarred Goff, and the Rams could have been content with that), but they had bigger aspirations, and they recognized that they needed to upgrade their QB position to obtain those bigger aspirations, i.e. - winning a Super Bowl.
And so the moral of the story is: a good team could settle for simply making it into the postseason, but a great team should aspire to win a Super Bowl!
TYREEK HILL to the Dolphins!
ReplyDeleteHoly cow, is Mike McDaniel going to win a Super bowl before Kyle Shanahan?
Not if they can't find a better QB, IMO. A QB depth chart of Tua Tagovailoa & Teddy Bridgewater (not necessarily in that order) is probably not enough to win a Super Bowl. Playoffs? Maybe. Super Bowl? No.
I do think it's safe to say the Patriots are in BIG trouble in the AFC East!
DeleteMAC JONES can never win a Super Bowl. Last season the Bills officially moved ahead of the Pats, and now the Dolphins may have moved ahead of the Patriots as well!

Smart move by KC front office. Hill appears to be a declining receiver but is seeking league-highest contract. The last few drafts have been teeming with solid-to-excellent receivers and shows signs of continuing to do so.
ReplyDeleteLarry Holder on The Athletic: "Hill ranked 17th among all wide receivers in 2021 using Sports Info Solutions’ “Total Points Earned” metric with 25 points. He ranked fifth in that category in 2020 (35), 11th in 2019 (36, in only 12 games) and second in 2018 (43). Hill also earned his fewest points in the past four seasons despite being targeted a career-high 160 times by Patrick Mahomes in 2021. Hill’s previous career high targets came in 2018 with 137 targets.
I get it’s one metric and there’s plenty of production across the board for Hill. But this dropoff is a noticeable one when you examine All-Pro-type receivers."
Agreed, doesn't hurt either that this draft is loaded with speedy wr's.
