What should we expect the 49ers 'Draft Plan' to be?

By Scooter_McG

We're still quite some ways away from the NFL draft and there is still plenty of time for free agent and trade movements to shift draft focus. However, the more I've been thinking about this year's draft, and ruminating on the team's draft needs, the more I have come to appreciate the forward planning the team implemented in 2021. And it comes down to an old draft adage - draft for the future.

There was some lamenting during the past season that the 49ers weren't getting enough of an immediate return from their 2021 draft class. There's is definitely some truth to that, as only one player (Elijah Mitchell) earned a starting role for most of the season and a number of the drafted rookies were either riding the bench or inactive for large portions of the season (including their #3 overall draft pick). And in an era where teams more and more often ask rookies to step in right away and not only contribute but be high impact players it was in some ways alarming to see (or not see, as the case may be) the contribution from the 49ers rookie class.

But looking back now, even in the press conferences after players were selected the team made reference to how many of these players they anticipated were longer term investments that may take time to develop (especially guys like Lance and Thomas that didn't have much of an opportunity to play in 2020 due to COVID). Now as we look at the current state of the 49ers roster it becomes even clearer that the plan in the 2021 draft all along was to draft with an eye for 2022 and beyond. Just look at the first four picks the 49ers made:

  • Lance was drafted with the intent of sitting him in 2021, a plan the team stuck with, and is all but guaranteed to be the 49ers starting QB this year, no matter that Jimmy Garoppolo still currently remains on the roster.
  • The team lost Laken Tomlinson and has not replaced him with a high priced free agent - indicating former Notre Dame LG Aaron Banks, the 49ers second pick last year, is expected to take over that role and play his natural left side position (rather than the RG position many thought he would earn in camp last year).
  • The team took two RBs last year, much to the surprise of many, which now looks like a smart move with the departure of Mostert. Third round pick Trey Sermon spent much of last year in the proverbial dog house, however, in college he was a dynamic playmaker and home run threat that now stands to rise up the depth chart to complement Mitchell, the 6th round pick who exceeded expectations.
  • Despite many fans believing the team needed to draft a CB early, the team waited until the end of the third round and then draft Ambry Thomas, who sat out 2020. Thomas now looks likely to enter the season at least as the 49ers third CB, and depending on plans in the slot (and whether Moseley will be used there) may be expected to see a lot of snaps.

And that just covers the first four picks. Day 3 picks Jaylon Moore, Talanoa Hufanga and Deommodore Lenoir may also be in line for considerable increases in snaps in 2022, with RT, SS and slot CB all in flux at the moment.

So why do I bring this up? Well, partly to show that the 49ers "holes" may not be as great as some fear. But also to gain some insight on how the 49ers may look to approach the 2022 draft. It is common as a fan to look at the roster of the team you support and make presumptions of the players and positions the team may target based on areas that appear to be weakest right now. I know I am guilty of it. If we were to look at those areas right now, most people would probably say the team's biggest needs are some combination of OG, RT while McGlinchey recovers, SS and Edge.

But when you then look at who they drafted last year and signed in FA... most of those positions already have guys the team has brought in to compete for those roles.

If, rather than focusing on the areas that appear weakest right now, we turn our lens to the teams looming holes in 2023, how does that change what might be considered the 49ers draft needs? Well, some of that requires a bit of navel gazing and projection as to which players coming off contract the 49ers are likely to look to extend/ re-sign versus those they may let go. And going off how the team has operated in recent years if I had to guess how the team will approach those decisions it will be partly based on age and partly based on position value.

I think it is safe to say extending both Deebo Samuel and Nick Bosa will be prioritised. Not only are they excellent players in the top tier of their positions in the NFL, they are entering their prime and play premium positions. If I was a betting man I would also say that Mike McGlinchey has a strong likelihood of being extended given age and the position he plays, though that will no doubt be a decision that is impacted by how he recovers from a very serious injury. With that in mind I doubt the team will look to invest a high pick at the position until they determine McGlinchey can no longer operate at a high level.

One area that clearly will need some attention in the near future is edge. Even with Bosa likely being extended, all of the other notable edge players (Hyder, Ebukam, Omenihu and Willis) will be coming off contract after the 2022 season. While the team can probably retain some of those players without breaking the bank, it would behoove them to take advantage of a cheaper resource through the draft that can learn the ropes as part of a rotation in 2022.

Some interesting decisions are also coming though for stalwart FS Jimmie Ward as well as CB Emmanuel Moseley. Ward has been a consistently good player for the 49ers for some time but is now on the wrong side of 30. He's at a point in his career where he can still likely get good money on the open market but on shorter term deals. Will the 49ers be willing to keep paying a premium on an aging safety, or will they look to get younger? Also, with Tarvarius Moore a FA at the end of the season, who will no doubt be in the mix for the SS role next to Ward this year, the 49ers could have both starters hitting the market.

Moseley meanwhile has been a steady performer when healthy, and will be hitting free agency in his prime. With another solid season in 2022 his market should be strong. However, he also consistently misses time and the 49ers have now invested in Charvarius Ward and drafted Ambry Thomas last year. There has also been speculation that the team may look to move Moseley inside to slot CB this season when in nickel with Thomas playing opposite Ward. Slot CBs typically don't make as much as outside CBs and the 49ers may not be willing to pay Moseley outside CB money.

Another looming hole from 2023 onwards (and potentially this year) is at center. Alex Mack is reportedly mulling retirement, and while I expect he will be back in 2022 the team also needs to be start planning for his replacement. Given how much Shanahan values the pivot, it seems likely that if the 49ers plan on replacing Mack through a drafted player that player will be drafted with an early pick.

From the lens of looking at 2023 and beyond I think a strong case can be made that the biggest "needs" for the 49ers appear to be edge, center, safety and slot CB. I wouldn't be surprised in the least to see at least three of those positions drafted in the 49ers first four picks of the 2022 draft as part of the team's future planning.

  1. Curious as to when McG is expected to realistically return. The dude was hurt in season and torn quads are a 4-6 month recovery, so the guy should be available from Day 1 of training camp. I don't expect them to go RT specifically since they have him back and Moore as a backup, and please god tell me Compton is no longer there and they draft a swing tackle to compete with Moore.

I really think they need to go guard again in the draft, Brunskill is servicable but I think he hurts who he plays next to more than he helps, feel like McG and even Mack had to account for Bruns that it hindered their play just enough. Get a guard, roll with Moore, McKivit, Skule and Brunskill as your backups and the oline is set.

Would be great to find a pass rush specialist, even if he's just a 3rd down only guy since they have a bit of quality for the 1st and 2nd down dudes to line up opposite Bosa.

A backup for Kinlaw is needed as well.

If AA-S or Dre are not coming back next season this is the time to draft a dude who you can mold into a new OLB.

And of course another DB would be great, but they can address this with bringing back Verrett on a prove it deal, so you have Ward, JV, EM, Thomas, Lenoir and DJ as your CBs.

    1. I doubt they draft an OG high two years in a row. I actually think they feel fine with Brunskill being the starter. But I do think they will draft a center on day 2. That player will likely be part of the competition for one of the OG spots as a rookie.

I also expect they will draft an edge high given how many guys are coming off contract at the end of the season.

I think they feel they already have the DT depth sorted. They might draft a DT on day 3, but doubt they go there on day 2. At LB, I would be surprised if they aren't planning for one of Al-Shaair or Greenlaw to be extended.

I would be surprised if they don't draft a slot CB this year. Probably not day 2, but fairly early on day 3 (no later than round 5).

    3. I think Parham and Strange are possibilities in the top 100 as they have the ability to play OG and C. While Cam Jurgens and Dohnovan West are possibilities a little later.
I would lean Edge early but it depends on who falls, I feel similarly with the cb/s position... and this depends a bit on how much they value nickle corner.
Their is a decent chance the best player to fall is a wide reciever... and the question is do you go BPA if that happens?

    4. I like both Parham and Strange - would be happy with either late day 2. After watching and reading up on Zach Tom, wouldn't mind him late day 2 either.

Wrt WR, yep, that is definitely a position I think the team could take day 2 based on BPA.

  2. Niners resign Dwelley to a one-year contract. Wonder how much of the money is guaranteed, Could be a camp body if they take a TE in the draft.

  3. "Will the 49ers be willing to keep paying a premium on an aging safety,..."

I'd agree that the Niners are paying Ward a solid starter salary, but I'm not sure they are paying a premium. The top-5 free safeties are being paid in the range of $14M-$16M AAV. Ward is in the second salary tier of $8M-$10M AAV. While he is going to be 30 this season, his play did not seem to show a decline last season. There is another older player in his salary tier, Pat's Devin McCourty (34). I can see Niners extending Ward with an incentive-laden contract for another 2 years.

    1. This!

People need to remember this team, while it went through ups and downs during the season, still made a run to within 3 points of the SB.

Yeah they lost a couple starters from that team but they still have the core.

LG will be filled by Banks (hopefully). The guy was amazing in college and moving back to his natural position, with a year of nfl strength training, conditioning and nutrition, there should be no step back from LT. I really don't think LT will be as good now in NY and will revert more back to the guy who was acquired via trade for just a 5th rounder (2 drafts removed).

They lost Shark, but thats why theres the draft. They upgrade the starting DBs and if they can get Verrett back on a prove it contract, with the other DBs like E-Man and the two rookies, the CBs will actually be better than last year.

We all loved DJ, but people need to remember he wasn't the day 1 starter, the beast Kinlaw is the guy who will be there at DT day 1 this year and if he can hit on his physical tools he's a massive upgrade over DJ.

Besides that who else did the team lose? Basically no one.

      RB Trenton Cannon (UFA, Titans)
OL Tom Compton (UFA, Broncos, 1-yr)
WR Richie James (UFA, Giants, 1-yr)
      DT D.J. Jones (UFA, Broncos, 3-yr, $30M)
RB Raheem Mostert (UFA, Dolphins, 1-yr, $3.125M)
WR Trent Sherfield (UFA, Dolphins, 1-yr)
      DL Kentavius Street (UFA, Saints)
OL Laken Tomlinson (UFA, Jets, 3-yr, $40M)
      CB K'Waun Williams (UFA, Broncos, 2-yr, $7M)

Thats the list of guys not returning...for all the naysayers who on there is a make or break guy? All of them have been replaced already or will be in the draft. This team is as good as it was at the start of 2021 and at the end of 2021.

I understand everyone wants to move on to Trey, and if he can do what Mahomes did in KC, then the future is extremely bright, but I also see how you have a known commodity with JG, you have won with a healthy JG, two NFC Champs and a SB loss with him...thats the same that Kaep got you (and the SB run was only half him, other half was Alex). People had no desire to run him out of town for a couple years after the last NFC champ game. I can see, and I'd be fine with, the idea of having JG stay and start with Trey playing a lot more since you know what you get with JG and he gets you wins when healthy...and if he was to start the year, get injured, you got Trey who will run it from there...very similar to Alex-Kaep.

    1. The NFL is laughing at the 49ers right now.

All 31 other teams are laughing at this game that Kyle and John are obviously trying to play at a time when they should be wiping the slate clean, removing this cloud over Trey Lance's starting stature, and they should already be firing up the team and the fan base for Trey Lance's big inaugural season, in the run up to the draft!

Kyle Shanahan looks absolutely PATHETIC right now, and the only people who don't agree with this statement are the 25% of 49ers fans who will blindly praise the 49ers no matter what!

    2. Listening to Lynch and Shanahan backs up what I posted - they see a lot of the guys they drafted last year stepping up into starter or key backup/ rotational roles this year. I think fans are far more concerned about the state of some positions than the team is, who got to see these guys develop behind the scenes last year.

My question is - when are the 49ers going to cut Garoppolo? I don't think they can allow him to step on the football field at any point this offseason because if he gets hurt again, and odds are he will seeing that he is made of balsa wood, his entire 2022 salary would become fully guaranteed wouldn't it?

I sure hope they cut him the day before his 2022 becomes guaranteed, as payback for throwing a wrench into his trade value, be the front office look foolish, and for costing the 49ers 2 super bowls!

Anyways, as we say in Hawaii - Kulia i ka nu’u

    3. Aloha,

By the way, we never thought Garoppolo was any good out here in Hawaii anyways. We think he's one of the most overrated QB's of all time, so the sooner he's gone the better . We were hoping it would be Lance last season, and in fact, that's what we expected, so we can't wait to see him take over this season.

  16. Marcus Jones, who the 49ers met with at the combine, has confirmed he will be having a zoom meeting with the team. Two meetings with Jones would indicate there is likely more than smoke there.

Jones is a guy I have mentioned as someone I think the team would take a long look at. Love the way he plays the game plus he provides excellent return skills. Not sure of he's a day 2 guy, but would be nice in round 4 and if they took him at the end of round 3 I wouldn't be mad.
