49ers Free Agency Primer

By Scooter_McG

Free agency is just around the corner with the new league year set to commence on March 16th. At that time the 49ers will need to be under the 2022 salary cap, and will be free to finalise any trades and sign free agents from other teams. The 49ers have already been busy re-signing some of their own free agents in recent days (Nate Sudfeld, Jake Brendel, Kevin Givens, Jauan Jennings, JaMycal Hasty, Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, Maurice Hurst and Colton McKivitz), while also signing OG Keaton Sutherland.

Interestingly, their two RFAs (Al-Shaair and Brunskill) are yet to be offered tenders. The team will likely want to keep both players, but maybe not on an RFA tender. I wouldn't be surprised if neither player is tendered but perhaps a longer term deal (2-3 years) is reached for both players.

In my previous three articles I've broken down the 49ers roster needs on offense and defense, as well as how the 49ers can free up as much as $50M to $60M in cap space. Here I will run through what I think the 49ers plans will be this free agency period.

A Look at the 49ers Free Agents

There are a number of 49ers players that will be entering free agency that the team would no doubt like to keep. The main guys will likely be Laken Tomlinson and DJ Jones, both of whom are high level starters and expected to be hot commodities in free agency that should be signed relatively quickly at a premium. As a result I don't expect either player to be back with the 49ers, however, if a market for either player fails to materialise or is softer than expected, the 49ers would be smart to stay in contact and swoop in.

There are also a number of other starters or key role players the team will no doubt be interested in bringing back at the right price, including Jaquiski Tartt, K'Waun Williams and Arden Key, as well as Al-Shaair and Brunskill mentioned earlier. Raheem Mostert and Jason Verrett, both of whom missed most of last year with serious injuries, will also likely be players the team keeps in contact with, with an eye for signing them on cheap, incentive laden contracts. Tom Compton may also be a player the team looks to bring back for depth, but I think it is unlikely they would look to bring him back as a potential starter.

I don't expect the 49ers to make re-signing any of those players a priority, though as outlined above, I could see the team try and sign both Al-Shaair and Brunskill to deals prior to the start of free agency. Rather, I suspect the team will play more of a waiting game to see how the market develops for each player, with an eye to bringing them back on the relative cheap.

49ers Rumoured Interest

Cornerback

There has already been quite strong rumours that the 49ers will be in the market for a few positions, but none stronger than their rumoured interest in a CB. It's a good year for it too, with a nice blend of top tier guys in their prime (JC Jackson, Carlton Davis), older high profile vets still playing at a high level (Stephon Gilmore, Casey Hayward), as well as a raft of mid-tier guys and other older vets that can still be good in the right situation.

JC Jackson will be the prize of the free agent CB market and the 49ers are one of the teams said to be interested. But then any team looking at CBs is likely to be linked with Jackson, who is in his prime and arguably the top CB in the NFL today. Gilmore has also been linked to the 49ers and may be a realistic option as he is now on the wrong side of 30 and has battled injuries the past couple of seasons. The 49ers may see Gilmore as being able to provide a leadership presence at the back like Richard Sherman, while giving some of their younger players more time to develop. But even so, Gilmore will still likely command a sizeable contract.

Rumours out of the combine though were that the 49ers were more likely to be playing in the mid-tier CB market. Given cap constraints as well as the presence of Moseley and promising play of Thomas at the back end of the season, the addition of a mid-tier level CB does appear to make sense. DJ Reed in particular has been strongly linked with a return and would be a nice addition to the defensive backfield with the versatility to play on the boundary or inside as needed.

Right Tackle

While no names have been attached to the 49ers as far as RTs go, rumours from the combine were that the 49ers don't feel confident McGlinchey will be ready to start the season and want to bring in a starting calibre RT as insurance. The McGlinchey news isn't that big of a surprise given he will be coming back from the same type of injury that ended Weston Richburg's career.

Unfortunately for the 49ers the free agent OT market doesn't look like it will be a particularly strong one. With supply limited, finding a player on the cheap the team feels confident can start the season if needed may be difficult. I wouldn't be shocked if the 49ers end up just bringing Tom Compton back, and looking to draft for depth.

Big Slot

Some names the 49ers have been linked with in this space are JuJu Smith-Schuster and Austin Hooper. While Hooper won't be a free agent, the ongoing rumoured interest in him, as well as the team's previous attempts to either sign or draft a player to take this role (including Jalen Hurd and Jordan Reed) suggest there may be some fire behind this smoke.

And it makes sense. While Deebo Samuel gets some reps from the slot, he is primarily an outside WR (and now part time RB). Their current primary option at slot WR is Jauan Jennings, another big bodied slot WR that played admirably last season but is not a dominant player. Getting someone like Smith-Schuster would provide a nice complement to the entire offense and another playmaker that can dominate the middle of the field. Having such a player will also provide some insurance if one of their stars gets injured.

Guard

The rumours when it comes to OG are mainly centred around the team wanting to bring back Tomlinson. But unfortunately, as mentioned above, it sounds like Tomlinson is going to have a lot of suitors and it will be difficult for the 49ers to retain him.

The good news for the 49ers is that there are a lot of other good options available at OG in free agency. Some of the other big names on the market include Brandon Scherff, Andrew Norwell and Rodger Saffold.

With so many options available the 49ers may have a good opportunity to bring in a talented player on a reasonable contract.

Backup QB

This is a position that is more one people expect than anything the 49ers have specifically been linked to. Tyrod Taylor's name has done the rounds given his link to Anthony Lynn, while Marcus Mariota's name has been floated around but mainly by fans as a guy they would like to see as Lance's backup.

The recent re-signing of Sudfeld, with $2M guaranteed, may suggest the team is happy to roll with Sudfeld behind Lance. But I don't think $2M should be seen as a deterrent to bringing in another veteran signal caller. In all likelihood the team is greasing Sudfeld's palms now in the hope he is happy to stick on the PS roster during the season.

Bobby Wagner and Chandler Jones

These two players have also been getting linked to the 49ers in recent days. Wagner would be an interesting addition to form a dominant LB duo with Warner, and the rumour is that interest is mutual between the 49ers and Wagner. But in the end money talks. Wagner is coming off a contract that paid him $18M per year on average. While he won't get near that again, he also won't come cheap. Wagner would be a luxury addition rather than a necessary one, and with other needs I just don't see it happening.

The Chandler Jones rumours appear to be mostly fan fiction at this stage. No credible source has linked Jones to the 49ers. Jones has said he is more interested in going to a winner than the money, but there are plenty of teams that can provide Jones with a chance of winning. And while money may not be his primary motivation, he still won't play on the cheap.

Scooter's Thoughts on Likely Main Targets

Based on the above I think the 49ers two primary targets in free agency will be a CB and an OG, with backup QB a close third. That's not to say they won't target or sign other positions, but those are the positions I think they will prioritise and in that order.

At CB, I highly doubt the 49ers sign one of the big name players. My guess is that DJ Reed is pretty much option 1A for the 49ers. They know him, they like him, they didn't want to lose him, and they've now seen him develop into a good player for a rival.

At OG, a guy I think would make a lot of sense for the 49ers is James Daniels from the Bears, who can also play center. He's an ascending player that is still very young and athletic. He will no doubt generate pretty strong interest in his own right, but can likely be had for less than the top line guys and provides upside.

At QB, I can't go past Tyrod Taylor. He just seems like a perfect mentor for Lance with the capability of winning games if he is needed to start. As much as Mariota would be nice, I don't see a scenario where he isn't signed somewhere to compete for a starter role this year.

Other positions I think the 49ers may target are Big Slot and RT. In terms of Big Slot, JuJu Smith-Schuster is a guy the team has reportedly tried to sign in the past. The belief is that Shanahan is a fan. I can definitely see the 49ers making a push to sign him. Evan Engram may also be a guy the 49ers keep an eye on. At RT, the options really aren't that great but given McGlinchey's status they may feel the need to bring in an adequate veteran option to start rather than trusting a rookie through the draft.

One position I haven't mentioned which could be a sneaky lower tier priority for the team is a complementary RB to Mitchell. Someone that can bring the speed element to the offense if Mostert is signed elsewhere. Last offseason the team tried to sign Cordarelle Patterson, and he is a name I think may be worth keeping an eye on for the 49ers this offseason.

    * I agree with you on FA CB DJ REED! IMO, the #1 FA the 9ers are interested in.
THE PROBLEM IS: Several teams, including Seattle, will try to sign him and drive his market value up to ~$7 Mil. P/Y

    * I also agree with you on FA OG/C James Daniels, but again, Spotrac lists his market value at ~$7.4 Mil P/Y

As you know, on Mon 03/14/2022 legal tampering begins! We've yet to see the 9ers restructure, or extend Armstead and Ward

    * A FA OG the 9ers could consider: G Mark Glowinski
Spotrac list his Colts contract at 3 YR, $16,2 Mil., a $4,20 Mil signing bonus, $4,2 Mil guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $5,4 Mil

    1. I think getting a decent to good starting CB for $7M a year is a bargain. That sort of price range shouldn't scare the 49ers. Can back load the contract.

And I think Daniels will be at least around the $8M a year mark. Maybe more. Young and ascending player. But he will also likely be a few million a year cheaper than Tomlinson, has more years left in him, is still improving, and there is potential to slide him to center when Mack retires. Not to mention he looks a natural fit for an outside zone team. Again, 49ers can back load the contract.

    2. Agreed, Scooter. Excellent job on the article.

    3. Thanks razor. Who do you think the 49ers might target?

I didn't include any edge guys as I think they'll go the draft route there, but if they did go edge who do you think might be of interest? I've seen Dante Fowler's name crop up as a guy they might keep tabs on to see if he can be had for a bit of a bargain. But I reckon Derek Barnett could be a sneaky player the 49ers look to grab.

    4. If the Cowboys release, La'el Collins he might be another guy they take a look at.

Edge of what's left I could see them talking to Reddick for $4 million a year, but I think it's the draft since it's got depth at the position.

  3. Mariota will be a starter for someone this year, I am thinking the Hawks. Niners sign Verette to a one-year deal add Reed and CB room has some depth with Thomas and Mosely. Too bad about Jones and Tomilson they played their way off the team; I hate to see them go.

  4. From MM

In re-signing quarterback Nate Sudfeld to a fully guaranteed one-year, $2 million contract, the 49ers made their intention known that Sudfeld is the top option to serve as the No. 2 quarterback behind Trey Lance.

    1. I disagree with MM on his take here. $2M guaranteed does not guarantee he will be the backup QB. That's not much for a backup QB.

I think this is very much about giving Sudfeld money up front to stave off competition for his services and compensate him for potentially getting less money on the PS during the season if he doesn't win a job on the 53.

    2. From desperate for the 49ers to fail with JG at QB to desperate he doesn’t get traded for much in return...

      Delete
    3. I hope the 49ers get as much for Jimmy as humanly possible, Scooter. You are mistaking my pragmatism for pessimism!

The difference between myself, and a fanatic, is that I'm a realist at this stage of my life, and my judgement isn't clouded.

That said, I wouldn't be shocked to see a desperate team overpay for Jimmy. After all, he does play QB, and he does have a reputation as being an outstanding teammate.

As for being desperate for Jimmy to fail, you couldn't more wrong. There is a big difference being knowing in your heart that somebody is destined to fail, and actually hoping that he will fail.

My issues with Jimmy were never personal. I want the 49ers to win a Super Bowl. My issues with Kyle choosing to stick with Jimmy, who had already proven himself to be incredibly inconsistent and hopelessly injury prone, after spending a fortune on a much more talented QB, wasn't personal, Scooter. My problem was that I wholeheartedly believed that it meant yet another season watching an inconsistent QB battle never ending injuries, ultimately holding the team back when push came to shove, and sure enough .... it's exactly what we got.

And now, after six weeks of hearing about how "Trey Lance still isn't ready because ... how could he be ready if he couldn't even beat out an injured Jimmy G?", has me more eager than ever to see this nightmare at QB end.

Yet here we are 4 days before the start of the new league year, and the nightmare continues, AS I PREDICTED almost a year ago. In fact, everything I assumed would happen after Kyle inexplicably held onto Jimmy last season, unfortunately has happened, and IMO it cost the 49ers a Super Bowl. And as a fan, that makes me sad!

      Delete
    4. Some fans are content with just being competitive. Some fans are content with just making the playoffs. Some fans are content with just making it the conference championship game. And some fans are content with just making it to the Super Bowl.

I am not any one of those fans.

The 49ers were the class of the NFL for a very long time, because Bill Walsh never settled for second best! And having lived through the 49ers glory days as a season ticket holding fan .... I can never, will never, settle for second best either, Scooter ..... EVER!

And when the 49ers brass make decisions that I believe hurt their chances of finishing on top, I will always speak from my heart! That's my definition of being a true fan!

      Delete
    5. You absolutely have been desperate for failure. You've gone nuclear over JG ever since they decided to play him over Lance. You've completely lost any sense of realism about JG since. And you've consistently made silly "predictions" and bets about what will happen to the 49ers and JG as a result, with more concern of seeing those "predictions" be right than seeing the team succeed.

      Delete
    6. And as for your definition of being a true fan... basically, if they don't win the SB every year, the team has failed you personally. Yep, you're right, you're the one showing pragmatism and realism...

      Delete
  6. BTW Scooter, have you made a prediction for Jimmy's trade value yet?

And I don't mean how much you "hope" the 49ers can get in return for Jimmy, I mean what the 49ers likely to get for him?

Remember, this is a QB who is coming off of yet another injury marred season in which, whether due to injuries (plural) or not, completely fell on his face down the stretch, dragging his entire team down with him.

How much do you think a desperate team is willing to give up for the most injury prone starting QB in the NFL, who is due to make more than $26M in the final year of his contract, and who may be great in the locker room, but who has serious limitations on the football field, even when he's healthy? A QB who, not so coincidentally, can't even throw a football for the next 16 weeks, maybe longer, due to surgery on his throwing shoulder, and who is also trying to come back from a torn thumb ligament on his throwing hand?

Again, there's always a chance that there is a team that will over pay for Jimmy, simply because he's a QB who has a winning record. When in reality, a W-L record isn't a QB statistic. In fact, the 49ers best winning stretch in 2021 coincided with Jimmy's WORST stretch of games as a QB. The rest of the 49ers team bailed Jimmy out again this season, just like they bailed him out in the 2019 postseason. If it weren't for Deebo doing superhuman things, the 49ers would have missed the postseason again, despite having one of the best coaching staffs and one of the most complete rosters in the entire league! Is that a QB you would want to count on if you were in need of a QB to help guide a talented roster? I sure wouldn't!

    1. My "prediction" was a day 2 pick this year and a day 2 pick next year, maybe a late round pick tossed in.

Which would be similar to the Wentz deal.

    2. OK. Well, That's hardly a big price tag for a "Super Bowl" QB, wouldn't you agree. I think it's funny that every other possible domino has to fall before anyone will consider Jimmy. He's clearly an afterthought.

And yah, if I'm being honest, I little part of me doesn't think Kyle should be rewarded for his chickensh_t decision to keep Jimmy last season. I think it would be justice if they get less now than they could have got for Jimmy last off-season, which I think will actually be the case.

      Delete
    3. As a long time fan, I think Kyle made a very poor, short-sided, cowardly decision last season, and it probably cost him a Super Bowl!

I just want this nightmare to be over with before Jimmy costs the 49ers any more championships!

      Delete
    4. Who has been saying they would get a huge return for him? And yeah, JG was never going to get traded before Rodgers and Wilson decisions were made.

Nobody has been arguing JG is an elite QB. Nobody. But he has shown that he can lead a roster with a strong running game and good D deep into the playoffs. Like Alex Smith. If you can't get an elite QB, that type of QB can still be valuable to a team.

      Delete
    5. I highly doubt the 49ers would have won the SB with Lance starting last season. So no, I strongly disagree that his decision to start JG cost them a SB.

It actually probably resulted in them going further in the playoffs. The team believed in JG, even if you don't. And that team belief was vital to their playoff run. Lance is yet to earn that.

      Delete
    6. Oh, I do.

I think Trey would have given them more than Jimmy did, and they only probably needed average QB play at the end of the season to get past the Rams.

Think about it, Scooter. Jimmy was a well below-average QB down the stretch, as well as the post-season, yet again, and that's a fact! Yet, the 49ers still almost made it to the Super Bowl. Why? Because they were the best all-around team, that's why!

Imagine if they had just gotten just average QB play in the second half of last season?

Like I've been saying ... if Trey Lance can't give the 49ers more than Jimmy gave them when it really counted, in the second half of last season, then they made a huge mistake spending all of that draft capitol to draft him!

      Delete
    7. The reality is that Kyle's chicken-sh_t decision to hold onto Jimmy cost the 49ers a Super bowl this last season. No doubt about that!

Jimmy wasn't just "bad" down the stretch, he was flat-out "AWEFUL"!

      Delete
    8. Scooter, have you even bothered to look at Jimmy's numbers over the last 5 games?

      Delete
    9. So Trey Lance was set to make history as the first rookie QB to not just make a SB, but win it. Ok. Again, yes, you're definitely the one being pragmatic and realistic.

      Delete
    10. Jimmy Garoppolo, down the stretch last season, made Mac Jones look like John fricken Elway, for crying out loud!

      Delete
    11. The team believed in JG and played top level football down the stretch off the back of that belief. It is a mistake to assume they would have done the same for a rookie QB.

      Delete
    12. Yes, the way the defense, and Deebo Samuel were playing in the second half of the season, the Niners would have beat the Bengals in the Super Bowl if Trey Lance was merely an average QB.

And the amount of growth we saw from Trey in just his 2nd start, yah, he would have given the 49ers a much better chance than Jimmy, and the 49ers would be better for it this coming season as well! No question about it!

And now the NFL QB market seems to be telling everyone exactly what I've been saying .... $26M is just too much to pay for a QB who IS NEVER GOING TO WIN A SUPER BOWL!

      Delete
    13. I don't know if Trey Lance will ever win a Super Bowl, but one thing I do know ..... Trey Lance will win a SB before Jimmy Garoppolo OR Mac Jones .... that much I do know!

    14. Lance showed nice growth between start #1 and start #2. But c'mon, he beat the Texans.

      Delete
    15. Let me ask you one more thing, Scooter -

Don't you think it's a lot easier to win a super Bowl when your QB is on his rookie contract?

Think about this: Every Super Bowl over the last 5 years has had at least one QB on a rookie deal.

      Delete
    16. Scooter, W's and L's aren't a QB stat! That's a TEAM stat!

Before the 49ers lost to the Rams in the NFC Championship Game, the 49ers had won 6 of their last 7 games, despite HORRIBLE play from Jimmy Garoppolo. What did Jimmy have to do with the 49ers getting to the conference championship? He was pathetic down the stretch!

      Delete
    17. In fact, we may never see an offensive performance like we saw from Deebo in the second half of 2021. What a shame that the 49ers couldn't win a Super Bowl with the way the defense was playing, and the way Deebo was TRANSCENDING the game of football.

What a shame to waste such a display of offensive genius!

      Delete
    18. BTW, I never expected a Jimmy trade before Aaron Rodgers, and of course the somewhat surprising Russel Wilson trade.

But that was days ago Scooter, and Carson fricken Wentz? Even he was traded days ago, for crying out loud!

Come on man. Read between the lines.

    19. The 49ers are currently working on some kind of face-saving deal, that looks better than it really is in reality.

      Trust me on this!

      Delete
    20. But even that might not materialize because Jimmy is currently injured, teams know who Jimmy is, and they know the 49ers need to clear his contract. The 49ers have absolutely ZERO leverage, UNLIKE last offseason.

      Delete
    21. Nobody was buying the idea that, after drafting Trey, the 49ers might keep Jimmy around for two years. The Niners tried to sell that idea early on, and nobody bought it!

    22. Blah blah blah. 1,678,345th verse, same as the 1st.

A trade will likely get done. It won't be "face saving" or whatever that means. The 49ers aren't trying to save face for anything. They are quite happy with how keeping JG last season worked out, I assure you.

It will just be the best deal they can get. Maybe its some nice picks for the 49ers, maybe its not much. Honestly, it doesn't matter. And if they can't get a trade in place, sure, maybe they just release him. Again, that in no way will make them question or rue their decision to keep him last season.

The decision to keep him got them to 1 quarter away from making the Super Bowl again for Pete's sake! And any QB that can take you to a SB and two NFCCGs in 3 seasons is a QB that gave you a chance to win the SB (and the year they missed was one where he was hurt most of the season). Any argument to the contrary is simply ridiculous.

But then, ridiculous appears to be where you live these days.

      Delete
    23. Ok Scooter.

I am sure an NFL team is just waiting to pounce on a $26M QB who is currently injured, and had proven he can't stay healthy.

Jimmy can't throw until July at the earliest, but I am sure he's going to be a difference maker for some team.

Jimmy Garoppolo is not the answer, dude. That's a fact. And the sooner you realize this fact, the better off you will be both as a sports blogger, and a fan!

      Cheers, bro!

    29. Oh good grief.

I don't think Jimmy G is the answer. Where the heck have I said that? I have been EXTREMELY transparent that I believe taking Lance was the right move. Wrote many articles saying they should do that well before last years draft.

I just am honest enough with myself that I can appreciate any QB capable of taking his team that close to winning the SB is at least giving his team a chance to win it.

And I take exception to anyone that suggests I am not a "good fan" if I don't subscribe to the idea that any time the team doesn't win the Super Bowl it means the team was an utter failure, and that I should go follow another team. And trust me, I appear to be a much happier fan than you do by not having such an extreme view.

  9. I just don't understand the love for Garoppolo. If the 49ers have determined that they can't win a Super Bowl with him, and according to Steve Young, Kyle runs perhaps the most QB friendly system in the NFL, why all of the love for Jimmy?

This current 49ers core has been primed to win a Super Bowl since 2019, yet when it comes to Lombardi Trophies, the 49ers have come up bupkis (short), 3 straight years in a row. Unless the bar for success for this once proud 49ers organization is no longer about winning world championships, I don't understand why a segment of Niners fans continue to show this guy love.

I am assuming that most of the Jimmy Garoppolo apologists are new-timers, and haven't been faithful fans spanning back to the glory days, but still, I just don't get it. I mean, the 49ers have paid Jimmy more than $110,000,000.00 to be their STARTING QB since signing him to a $137,500,000.00 contract before the start of the 2018 season, and he's missed 25 games over a 65 game regular season stretch, due to whatever his current "injury of the week" happens to be ailing him. And when he is healthy enough to play, he is one of the most inconsistent QB's I have ever seen. He basically robbed the 49ers of over $110M and 2 Lombardi Trophies, and yet there are still a portion of the 49ers fan base that seem to think he was worthy of the money the 49ers have paid him, when in reality - he's never recovered fully from his torn ACL, and he has serious limitations that have essentially handcuffed Kyle's offense, and held the 49ers offense back for years.

Sure, Jimmy seems like a good guy, but they don't give out championship trophies in the NFL for being "good guys". And if we are being honest, Jimmy screwed the 49ers by delaying his shoulder surgery for well over a month. And this is after he underperformed the value of his contract for the last 4 seasons.

And here we are, 4 DAYS before the start of the new league year, and when it comes to a Garoppolo trade it's CRICKETS! Is it really any wonder why even Carson Wentz was traded days ago, despite the fact that his teammates apparently hate playing with him, and yet MR. Good Guy - Jimmy Garoppolo, can't seem to attract many suitors.

As the new league year gets closer, the less leverage the 49ers have in trading Jimmy, but don't worry guys, "just a couple more dominos need to fall" before Jimmy becomes a red-hot commodity.

    1. I can assure you guys of one thing .... while you all continue to Jimmy Garoppolo a pass, I can assure you that behind the scenes, ShanaLynch are LIVID in Jimmy's decision to have surgery in the very week leading up to the new league year, which is basically a deadline for the 49ers, BTW. You guys are such apologists for this guy, you don't even realize when he's actively screwing your team over. Classic!
