2022 Edition NFL Draft/CB's

We'll take a look at some of the corner's that will be available in the 3rd round where the 49ers have shown to value the position. First player up:

Marcus Jones, 5'8" 174 lbs., 28 7/8" arms, 8 7/8" hands. Having averaged 14.4 yards per punt return and 34.2 yards per kick return, along with 9 career TD's, he's the best returner in the country, and would be our day 1 starter as our punt/kick returner. His size is a concern at the position, however I believe a year of NFL strength and conditioning could mitigate some of the catch point issues he has. Didn't participate at the combine, but he has lots of speed on demand. Hips are some of the best in the class. Smooth as silk. Physical tackler. Played some wideout this year as well. I think he's still on the board in the 3rd round.

Coby Bryant, 6'1" 193 lbs., 30 5/8" arms, 9 3/8" hands. 4.54 speed/17 bench. Experienced 4 year starter with 10 career INT's. Above average ball skills, catch point contester, good instincts and anticipatory skill. Best in zone where he can attack forward. Gave up 18 yards on 2-5 targets vs. Alabama in the semifinal.

Roger McCreary, 5'11" 190 lbs., 28 7/8" arms, 9" hands. 4.5 speed. Physical press corner. 100+ tackles in his senior year. Doesn't have instinctual zone ability. Not sure he can hold up outside at the NFL level due to physical skill set and think his best fit would be as a slot corner in a man heavy scheme. Finished 1st in forced incompletions(21). Very experienced with 183 targets against some top competition.

Joshua Williams, 6'3" 195 lbs., 32 7/8" arms, 9 1/2" hands. 4.5 speed, 36" vertical, 124" broad jump. This kid from a physical standpoint has it all and is the reason he can play in any scheme, although his best fit might be cover 3. Only 4 years experience at the position, former wide receiver which helps him identify routes. Clocked at 21.75 mph at the senior bowl. Competition level is a concern but a guy with his size and length that can turn and run with ease is worth a 3rd round gamble. 5 INT's, 22 PBU's and 79 tackles through 28 games.

  1. I think Marcus Jones is a real option for the 49ers to compete for the slot CB role while also being the PR/ KR.

Report: Colts expected to be in the mix for Jimmy Garoppolo.....
The Indianapolis Colts pulled off a big trade on Wednesday by sending quarterback Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders. Now, it appears they are in the mix to trade for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

    3. Serious question:

If you were ShanaLynch, would you guys sign BOBBY WAGNER to keep him away from the Rams, IF you had traded Jimmy G last offseason and had the additional $26M to spend in cap space this season?

The 49ers certainly don't need Bobby Wagner, but I think I would.

In fact, I'm going to be asking this kind of question a lot the free agency period. An additional $26M in the 49ers coffers is an awful lot of money, that's for sure. It wouldn't have necessarily changed everything for the 49ers this offseason, but it sure would have changes a lot!

  2. I think the 49ers are in better shape at CB than people are giving them credit for. I think the 49ers projected Deommodore Lenoir at nickleback when they drafted him, and I personally think he's got a chance at solidifying himself as the starter there, and they have their other two starting CB's on the outside in Emman & Thomas.

I thought Ambrey Thomas's trajectory at the end of his rookie season was actually quite remarkable. CB is one of the most difficult positions to play, and for a rookie, who hadn't even played a single snap during his final year in college, to come in and go from fringe backup to ascending #1 CB in the course of his rookie season, tells me that Ambrey Thomas is made of the right stuff. His ability to mirror WR's and stay in-phase, matching some of the league's best WR's stride for stride, was awesome to see. The growth we saw out of Thomas on a game-to-game basis, was as clear as day. Perhaps most encouraging of all, was the way in which he went from a CB who was struggling to get his head around at all, let alone identifying where the football was, to a CB who was not only able to consistently find the ball, but actually aggressively compete for the football at the catchpoint, was really fun to watch. Not only do I think that Ambrey Thomas has the potential to develop into a #1 shutdown cornerback .... I actually think he likely to become that kind of player, and sooner rather than later.

The 49ers have been developing Emmanuel Mosley since 2018, and while his ceiling isn't as high as Ambrey Thomas', Mosley is a fundamentally sound CB and a capable #2, IMO, and I think his $6.5M cap number for the upcoming season is reasonable.

So while Cornerback is definitely a position of need for the 49ers this offseason, it's not a top need, so they can certainly take a measured approach. For instance - with both Thomas and Lenoir going into their 2nd seasons, and Mosely signed through this season at a reasonable price, I really don't think they need to make JC Jackson the highest paid CB in the NFL. I do think they should sign a veteran FA CB with experience in the slot (DJ Reed ?), bring back D. Johnson to compete for a spot, and use another late day 2 pick (#93 or 3rd RND - Compensatory pick) on a guy like Nebraska's Cam Taylor-Britt, whom I think would be a terrific fit in the 49ers defensive backfield.

  3. OK guys, I have a new prediction for a potential Jimmy G trade:

Garoppolo is set to count $26.9 million against the salary cap in the 2022 season. Of that, there is a $1.4 million prorated signing bonus, $705,870 roster bonus, $600,000 workout bonus, and $24.2 million base salary. Due to his shoulder surgery, $8.9 million of that money is guaranteed. Of that, $7.5 million is in injury-guaranteed base salary, with a further $1.4 million in prorated signing bonus.

If the 49ers are going to find a trade partner for Jimmy at this stage, I think they are going to need to eat somewhere in the ballpark of the $8.9M of his 2022 salary. If the 49ers are willing to cover $8.9M of the final year of his contract, they may get something in range of a conditional 3rd round pick for Jimmy G.

    1. And this is the point where I expect Scooter to call me out for hedging my bet, after I claimed that I wasn't hedging my bet, when it comes to my original prediction that the 49ers would end up releasing Jimmy G.

The bottom line is that, despite a lot of lofty speculation, Jimmy Garoppolo's trade market has been lukewarm at best, and probably closer to cold than lukewarm, which reinforces all of my previously stated issues with holding onto Jimmy last season after spending an absolute fortune on Trey Lance.

    2. Dude, regarding JG, the less you say the less ridiculous you are going to look after everything is settled.

      Delete
    3. I just want JG off the books! That's really all I care about. If the 49ers get something for him in return, then great. If they don't get much of anything in return, so be it. The sooner the 49ers send this pretender packing, the better.

This is Trey's team now. It should have been Trey's team at the start of last season. It should have been Trey's team after Jimmy embarrassed the 49ers in prime time vs the Colts. And it certainly should have become Trey's team after Jimmy tore his thumb up during his stunningly poor prime time performance vs the Titans!

Why is there a delusional segment of the 49ers fan base that continues to defend this joker? Jimmy has already cost the 49ers at least one World Championship, probably two, and now he chooses to delay his surgery in order to lower his trade value?

He's lucky the 49ers aren't planning on trading him to the NY Giants after the new league year begins in 6 days from now, because that's where he deserves to end up!

    4. "Why is there a delusional segment of the 49ers fan base that continues to defend this joker?"

Arik Armstead is delusional as well?

      https://sports.yahoo.com/arik-armstead-jimmy-garoppolo-saved-013913423.html

      "Saved".

Why wouldn't you want to see, hope, the Niners get as much as they can in return? You got a special kind of hate going there dude.

    5. Arik likes Garoppolo. They're friends dude. Besides, he's talking about early in Kyle's tenure. Jimmy replaced CJ Beathard, Brian Hoyer, and Nick Mullens .... hardly a murder's row of capable QB's. I understand that everybody likes Jimmy the person. I like the guy. He seems like a good dude. But I don't like the fact that he's bee holding the 49ers back for the last few years. Just because he's a better QB than Nick Mullen's doesn't make him worth anywhere near $26M a year. Not only that, the guy can't can't stay healthy, ribico.

My feelings are that QB's shouldn't be judged by a team's W-L record. Coaches should, but QB's? Nah.

Why do I say that? Case in point: The 49ers best stretch of winning football last season coincided with Jimmy worst stretch of football. Jimmy absolutely fell apart after tearing his thumb up vs the Titans, yet the 49ers absolutely caught fire after that, thanks in large part to Deebo Samuel, and an improved pass rush.

I just don't understand the love for Jimmy - the QB. His poor postseason in 2019 was one thing, but he's seriously the main reason why the 49ers didn't win a Super Bowl this season, IMO. Jimmy was flat out putrid down the stretch and in the postseason, and that's the time of the year that a QB earns his money.

      Delete
    6. Because I'd rather the 49ers carry Jimmy's $26M over from last season. To me that would have put this team in much better shape, plus Trey would have game experience going into this year, and that's a critical thing for a young, inexperienced QB like Trey.

I'm not rooting against the 49ers getting as much as they can for Jimmy. But I want to win Super Bowls ribico. I think they would have a much better chance, and would probably be Super Bowl favorites going into this year, if they had shipped Jimmy off last season, and had an additional $26M to spend this offseason. That's all. And I am just reminding everyone how much better position this team would have been in if they had just moved on from Jimmy last season, when they had more leverage, and also an opportunity to carry his cap number over to this season.

    7. I've been ready to turn this page for almost a full year now. Ever since they pulled the trigger for Lance. I was absolutely elated when I heard Trey's name called during the draft, and absolutely deflated when it became clear that Kyle didn't have the guts to move on from a QB whom I felt would never be able to get over the hump, in large part because he simply can't stay healthy.

I just want Jimmy GONE at this stage! If they get something for him, great, but I just don't think the 49ers have much trade leverage anymore. We'll see.

  4. Thanks for the write-up, Razor. Since I don't follow the draft very closely until the draft week, it was quite informative about some of the mid-round prospects (which is where the Niners like to hunt).

Meanwhile, it seems Bobby Wagner will likely stay in the same Division, with all three teams showing interest, per Rappaport.

    1. I don't think the Niners really need Wagner, however with that being said keeping him away from the other NFC West team might seem the prudent thing to do.

  5. Some key signings below, in addition to Jennings. Not sure who is advocating for Sudfeld, now that Scangarello is gone.

-OL Colton McKivitz (ERFA Tender, one year)
-DT Kevin Givens (ERFA tender, one year)
-RB JaMycal Hasty (ERFA tender, one year)
-DT Maurice Hurst (UFA, one year)
    -QB Nate Sudfeld (Reserve/Future contract)

  6. My final JIMMY GAROPPOLO prediction:

    The 49ers will either:

Release Jimmy, and eat the $7.5 M injury guarantee for now, which of course would be offset, if/when he signs for more than that somewhere else

or – they will trade Jimmy straight up for a 4th round pick

or – they will pick up $7.5M (the equivalent injury guarantee he’s owed if the release him) of his 2022 salary, and they will get a 3rd round pick in return, that could become a 2nd round pick if he plays at least 14 or 15 games this coming season, which they will likely lose out on because Jimmy simply can’t stay healthy for any length of time

The bigger question for me is .... will the 49ers trade for TOM BRADY?

    ReplyDelete
  7. There is something about this Brian Grise - QB coach hire. The thing is ... Kyle already turned Tom Brady down once (a couple years ago), which likely cost him at least one Super Bowl. How much would the he/Niners be willing to give up for Brady now, for what could be just one season (maybe two)?

  8. Barrows on why Jimmy G hasn't been traded yet. Prior to the quotes below Barrows is talking about the need for the 49es to get under the cap by 3/16 deadline.

“They move Jimmy Garoppolo, and that’s not an issue. He goes away and [frees up] $25 million in cap space. … My point is I just wonder whether teams are using that deadline as leverage against the 49ers.

“This is maybe one of the reasons—the shoulder being another reason—to sort of drag this out and sort of get them to agree to a deal that doesn’t give them quite as much compensation.

“The 49ers can do lots of other things—restructure [tight end] George Kittle. They can extend [safety] Jimmie Ward. They can cut this guy, cut that guy to get under that limit. But they have to be under it by [next] Wednesday, so they have to do a few things that they wouldn’t normally want to do, I think, unless they trade Jimmy Garoppolo.

“I have to believe that’s part of the equation here. A smart team, looking at the situation, will say, ‘Hey, let’s just kind of string them along until Monday and Tuesday, and see if we can’t get them to agree to a more favorable deal for us.”
