This will be our first installment of the upcoming NFL prospects in this years draft. We will be taking a look at the wide receiver position, which I think they could invest one of their two 3rd rounds picks. We'll try and identify prospects the 49ers may be interested in that should be available in that range. Specifically, a speedy, wr/punt returner with the versatility to play all over the field, or as its often been described, "position-less". Let's take a look at the first guy up:
Christian Watson, 6'4" 208 lbs., WR, NDSU, 32.5" arms, 10 1/8" hands, 4.36 speed, 38.5 vertical, 136 broad jump. If you're looking for size, speed and versatility; look no further. Although he never was a 1000 yard receiver in college, it was the scheme and not the ability. I think he could improve his releases along with using his size and physicality at the catch point. Prior to the combine I thought he could be a 3rd round target and a perfect compliment to what we have at the position, not to mention his familiarity with the chosen one; Trey Lance . No longer. He solidified himself in Indy as a top 50 lock.
Romeo Doubs, 6'2" 201 lbs., WR, NV, 32 1/4" arms, 10" hands, did not participate at the combine. Two sport athlete, track/football. 2000 all purpose yards in his senior season. Long strider and a legitimate deep threat. Outstanding feet/balance with a trademark shimmy release to either side. X receiver with big slot potential. 60% contested catch rate for 2021. He does have some punt return experience, and I expect him to be available in the 3rd round.
Jalen Tolbert, 6'1" 194 lbs., WR, South Alabama, 32 1/4" arms, 10" hands, 4.49 speed, 36" vertical, 123" broad jump, 7.08 three cone drill. Earned 3 letters in basketball and baseball. 696 yards and 9 TD's as a senior. Ranked 6th in both deep catches and yards with 16 and 646. 44% contested catch rate for 2021. No return experience that I'm aware of. Should be available in round 3.
Tyquan Thornton, 6'2" 181 lbs., WR, Baylor, 33 1/4" arms, 8 1/4" hands, 36" vertical, 130" broad jump. He led the Bears in 2021
with 62 catches for 948 yards and 10 touchdowns. He received a healthy 26.2% of the targets while averaging 15.3 yards per reception. He's got work to do as far as learning routes and sitting down and sinking his hips on his breaks. Smallish hands but it didn't show up on tape. He'd be the piece to take the top off for this offense. Thought he was a 4th rounder until he ran a 4.28.
Suggested by eMJay:
Kevin Austin Jr., 6'2" 200 lbs., WR, Notre Dame, 32 7/8th" arms, 9" hands, 39 vertical, 132" broad jump. 4.43 speed. Excellent athlete who missed 2019 for undisclosed suspension by Kelly. Had two surgeries on his foot that he broke in 2020. Broke out in 2021, especially his final 5 games of the season. 888 total yards receiving on 48 catches, averaging 18 per catch and 7 TD's. Needs route development but can get down the field and highpoint balls. No special teams experience.
You're missing out on Kevin Austin. 6'3 200lbs. Fast, quick, can get up and can catch.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I'll get him up there.

ReplyDeleteWOW! Speed was on display at the Lucas Oil Stadium, with 9 WR's running sub-4.4s 40 y-dashes:
Tyquan Thornton, Baylor: 4.28
Velus Jones, Tennessee: 4.31
Calvin Austin III, Memphis: 4.32
Alec Pierce, Cincinnati: 4.33
Danny Gray, SMU: 4.33
Bo Melton, Maryland: 4.34
Christian Watson, North Dakota State: 4.36
Garrett Wilson, Ohio State: 4.38
Chris Olave, Ohio State: 4.39
* Christian Watson is an athletic freak I'd love to see the
9ers draft! Unfortunately, after his Combine results, he'll be a top 50 draft pick and gone before the 9ers pick at #61.
* Baylor WR Tyquan Thornton no doubt made himself some money with his results at the combine and his breakout season at
Baylor. I had him as a mid 4th Rd draft pick, but I now suspect he'll go in the mid-late 2nd Rd.
* Nevada WR Romeo had a good 2021 season, but likely hurt himself, by not participate in the Combine. IMO, he'll be a late 4th Rd pick.
* I also agree with you, S Alabama WR Jalen Tolbert had a good 2021 season and should be drafted in the 3Rd Rd.
I think we can all agree, after the 2022 Combine there will be a lot of changes on the 9er draft board.
We need a speed element for sure. That's why you got the big arm.
DeleteGoing to be interesting to see how much they prioritize a WR in the draft.
ReplyDeleteA few rumours floating around that the 49ers will be interested in JuJu in FA, or Austin Hooper if he's available via trade. I wouldn't be surprised if there is truth behind those rumours. Either guy would play that big slot position they've been trying to find for awhile now.
My current thinking is they won't go WR until day 3 unless a guy they really like falls to them.
We've seen them take swings in rounds 2 and 3 for wr, but you could be right.
DeleteI don't think they'll address the offensive line until day 3.
I hope that isn't the case. DL and OL on day 2 would be my wish.
DeleteAnd a DB.
DeleteI don't really think they need to invest a high pick in the offensive line. They've got two 1st's on both flanks and a 2nd rounder in line to take over LG. I think they sign a vet OT because I doubt McGlinchey will be ready to go. I expect them to target a center on day 3.
DeleteRazor / Scooter
DeleteI expect Tomlinson will receive $$ offers pricing him higher that the 9ers can, or will, pay. Mack could decide to retire, McGlinchey could be slow to recover
and neither Brunskill or Banks are (IMO) the answer at
OG, especially with Lance taking over as QB.
There's a player the 9ers could draft with pick #61, that can play every position on the O-Line. Jamaree Salyer, Georgia. He could play OG until Mack retires, then move him to OC. If needed, he could also play RT if McGlinchey is slow to recover.
Here's a list of all CB's and their 2022 combine results. I count 19 CB's with 40's under 4.5s, with 9
Deletethat ran under 4.4s
Also included, is a list of all Safeties and their 2022 combine results. I count 11 that ran 40's under 4.5s with 6 that ran under 4.4s
https://www.patspulpit.com/2022/3/7/22965193/2022-nfl-scouting-combine-results-sunday-defensive-backs
GEEP, yeah, as much as I am sure the 49ers want to keep Tomlinson, everything I have heard suggests he will be a hot commodity in FA so doubt the 49ers will retain him.
DeleteWhile the hope will likely be Banks can take that role, and they will probably also keep Brunskill, I imagine they will be looking to add someone to the competition.
And while Lynch says he expects Mack to return, he said the same about Staley leading up to the draft while knowing full well he intended to retire. Even if Mack returns, its time to start looking for a future replacement.
Getting a guy in the draft that can compete at OG this year and slide into centre when Mack retires would be well worth it imo.

The 49ers have hired Brian Schneider as their special teams coordinator. He has more than a decade of NFL experience in that role, including from 2010-2020 with the Seahawks
Has a long-track record as the Seahawks' coordinator for 11 seasons. He stepped away from both his last two jobs in quick succession (Seahawks in 9/21 and Jags in 5/22) due to 'personal reasons'.
DeletePersonal reasons? Let's hope he didn't have Foerster's problem.
DeleteMaybe illness of someone close to him.

3. Seahawks
Thats a nice pedigree...
DeleteStepping down just before the season starts the past two seasons is a worry, just from the point of view it could happen again. But then the team also hired Sorenson who provides some insurance.
DeleteSpeaking of Lombardi, The Athletic is now offering a subscription for $1/month for the first six months, then $7.99/month thereafter. You can cancel any time. I just signed up myself. Very good reporting.

Rodgers staying in Green Bay does not surprise me at all. Mariota and JG are the top two available QB's and both should land with division contenders. The Steelers are probably the best fit for JG although Denver, Indy and that team from D.C. might make things interesting.
ReplyDeleteAaron Rodgers reportedly agrees to four-year, $200 million extension with Packers.....
ReplyDeleteIan Rapoport
The #Packers and MVP QB Aaron Rodgers have agreed to terms on a 4-year, $200M deal that makes him the highest paid player in NFL history, sources say. He gets a whopping $153M guaranteed and his cap number goes down. A monstrous commitment by GB for years to come.

ReplyDelete49ers might have leverage in Jimmy Garoppolo trade talks, Field Yates explains....
https://sports.yahoo.com/49ers-might-leverage-jimmy-garoppolo-224534764.html
Yea, I've always believed Jimmy is worth a late 1st. With Rodgers off the table, the chances have incrementally increased that the 49ers get a conditional 1st in 2023 if he can stay on the field. I'd send him to the best pass pro line team with interest.
DeleteWow. No more Russ in Seattle!
ReplyDeleteGood Riddance! So happy :) Russ plays twice a year against Mahomes, Carr and Herbert. Don't know why he moved there....How different is it from the NFC West?
DeleteAt the very least, this leads to a cannibalistic AFC West, which means Chiefs' dominance reduces. So win-win.
All we need now is Trey Lance to be slightly better than Jimmy G and my eye test says he is far better.
Glad to have him out of our division. That guy has been a thorn in our side for too many years.
DeleteThat comes as a mild surprise. Gave up a heck of a lot to make this trade, two first and two seconds and a fifth, plus players Drew Lock, Shelby Harris, and Noah Fant.
DeleteIt sounds like a lot to give up, but then the Rams had to give up two 1sts and a 3rd + Goff for Stafford who had publicly said he wasn't going to play for the Lions again. Stafford didn't have close to the resume Wilson has at the time of the trade.
DeleteIn the end it costs a lot to get a good QB. And a boat load to get a really good one.
It makes what we gave up seem not so bad with a chance to go to fantastic.
DeleteI thought Wilson looked on the decline last year. His agility has been compromised as well as arm strength.
ReplyDeleteWith what Denver just give up for Wilson, a 1st Rd pick for JG and his Salary looks like a bargain! Especially when you consider GB just signed Rogers to a four year, $200 Million extension, with $153M of it guaranteed!
ReplyDeleteBTW, has the legal tampering date changed from Mar 14th?
Going to play Wilson at Denver in 2022.
ReplyDeleteDaeSean Hamilton has been released by Denver. 49ers had a trade lined up for him last offseason before he tore his ACL. Wouldn't be surprised if the 49ers try and sign him.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts exactly when I saw that.
DeleteScooter / Razor
Deleteyea, I Agree. If he passes a physical.
WR DaeSean Hamilton tore his ACL while working out away from the team's facility last offseason. He was waived with a non-football injury designation, but then went unclaimed. He was placed on Denver's non-football waived/injured list and moved to IR.

#Pats FA corner J.C. Jackson -- who’s still just 26 -- will set the market in a big way. Sources say the #Bengals, #Chargers, #Niners and #Dolphins will all have legitimate interest in the All-Pro, among others.
@MR_INT

It would be too ironic if the Niners sign Jackson. Niners' MO is to value D line pass rush over DB playmaking and the opposite appears to be have been true for the Pats over the past decade.
DeleteIMO, it makes no sense for any team to overpay for CB in FA. Elite CBs in current NFL tend to have a relatively short shelf life on the "elite shelf" -- which is likely one reason Bill isn't extending Jackson.
So unless the franchise is a championship contender with competent O and D lines and a franchise QB, it doesn't make any sense to pay a boatload of money for an elite CB. Bengals definitely need FA help on O line. Not sure where the Chargers are, but they do play in the division with the best QBs, and it might make sense for them.

$104,711,795 with Avg. annual Salary $20,942,359

That's enough money to resign Tomlinson to an $11 mil PY contract and still have $9.942 Mil to resign DJ Jones
Mood, yea it would be a huge surprise if the 49ers signed Jackson.
DeleteGeep, I don't think the 49ers will resign Tomlinson or Jones. There's other teams that will overpay for them.
Colts trading Wentz to Commanders for two 3rd round picks. Could Ballard be planning on using that to trade for Jimmy G?
ReplyDeleteBoth head coaches' seats gotta be warm. I would take Jimmy over Carson in a New York Minute based on leadership alone.
DeleteAfter Irsay posted the selfie video following elimination of the Colts from playoff, I was pretty confident that he was buying Wentz a one-way ticket outta town -- irrespective of how Ballard and Reich felt.
DeleteWhat surprised me is that how few analysts considered Colts to be a destination for Jimmy considering the fit is quite good and the Niners have done business with them to mutual satisfaction.
If the 49ers end up flat-out releasing Jimmy G, just remember that I predicted this scenario months ago, and that was before Jimmy pulled a "Garoppolo", and opted to have surgery to repair a previously unknown issue in his throwing shoulder.
ReplyDeleteTo call Jimmy "injury prone" at this stage, would be the understatement of the millennia!

The #Colts have now entered the QB race again, and expect them to be in the mix for Jimmy Garoppolo, as well.
If he gets traded, do we still get to remember you predicted he'd just be cut?
DeleteJimmy's $25+M price tag, along with his ridiculous injury history, has me more confident than ever that the 49ers are going to either release him, or trade him for much, MUCH less than they anticipated as recently as 10 days ago.
DeleteSo sure Scooter, you can hold me to this.
I think I read somewhere that even you floated a possible scenario where the 49ers might simply end up releasing Jimmy. One thing seems certain .... QB needy teams are NOT exactly beating the 49ers doors down for Jimmy G. And why would they? It's no secret that the 49ers desperately need the cap space.
If I were running a football team, why would I trade for an oft-injured QB who is scheduled to cost over $25M in 2022, and who may or may not even be ready for the start of the season?
I might be willing to offer the 49ers a bag of chips for Jimmy, if I were running a team. But remember, Jimmy has a lot more leverage now that he's nursing himself back from surgery .... a surgery BTW, that seems to have caught the 49ers completely by surprise. It doesn't take clairvoyance to read between the lines on this. Jimmy seems to prefer the 49ers release him, and I suspect he's going to get his wish.
It will be resolved soon now that the two main dominos have fallen.
DeleteAgreed. The 49ers need to get this resolved.
DeleteI wouldn't be shocked to see some kind of face-saving trade from the 49ers that looks better on the surface than it is in reality. Perhaps a conditional pick of some sort. But that's not me hedging, because I do think he's going to be released.
"a previously unknown issue in his throwing shoulder."
