2022 Edition NFL Draft/Edge Rushers

We're going to be taking a look at the Edge position in a deep class, beginning with players I believe will be available in rounds 2 and beyond. We all understand the premium they put on the position so it will be addressed early and perhaps again later on. I'm focusing on Ford's replacement and first step explosion combined with power. First player up:

Boye Mafe, 6'4" 261 lbs., 32 5/8" arms, 9 7/8" hands, 4.5 speed with a 1.61 10 yard split. 38" vertical, 10'5" broad jump. Made a name for himself in the Senior bowl with 2 sacks, a forced fumble and 3 TFL's. He has an explosive first step with a powerful jab and chop. Plays with good leverage, and he attacks with some strategy. Seems like a smart player, and one that Kocurek/Bosa could turn into a star. Feels like he'll go in the top of the 2nd round, where the 49ers could find themselves if they trade Jimmy G.

Arnold Ebiketie, 6'2" 250 lbs., 34 1/8" arms, 10 1/4" hands, 38 vertical, 128" broad jump. Technically proficient with active hands. Rarely allows OT's into his chest and has more than a few ways to win. He's got some power in his hands which he uses in conjunction with speed. Plays the position like a vet even though it took him until his 5th year to breakout. Given his size I think he'd be best served in a sub-package pass rushing role, similar to the way Aldon Smith was used in his rookie season. His pro day is March 24th and it's then we'll get a 40 yard dash, 10 yard split and 3 cone. Another candidate to be taken at the top of round 2.

Nik Bonitto, 6'3" 248 lbs., 32 1/2" arms, 9 3/8" hands, 4.54 speed, 35.5" vertical, 120" broad jump, 7.07 three cone, 1.59  ten yard split. He's undersized and the scheme he played in allowed him to attack. He'd be another sub-package rusher until he gets a year of NFL strength and conditioning. He's twitchy as hell, and he's a quick processor. I think he could excel in this wide 9 under Kocurek. I anticipate him having the best chance of the three to still be on the board late in round 2.

Dominique Robinson, 6'5" 253 lbs., 33 1/4" arms, 9 3/4" hands, 4.72 speed, 41" vertical, 121" broad jump, 1.69 ten yard split. Former wr turned pass rusher, therefore lacking experience. Technically he has a lot to learn, but it's all there to exploit. Fluid, sudden, change of direction traits are all there. He looked the part in the Senior bowl. I'd expect him to go in that late 2nd early 3rd round.

Joshua Paschal, 6'3" 268 lbs., 32 3/4" arms, 9 5/8" hands, 4.77 speed, 37.5" vertical, 123" broad jump, 1.62 ten yard split. Versatile. Kentucky used him up and down the line. He's got some twitch off the snap for a big man. He had a down year in 2020 but owned 2021. This is a player I could see Lynch designating as a "Gold Star" player, and another late 2nd, early 3rd round prospect.

Amare Barno, 6'5" 246 lbs., 34" arms, 9" hands, 4.36 speed, 37" vertical, 131" broad jump, 1.54 ten yard split. Explosive athlete that needs development. The skies the limit but the floor could drop out. Doesn't play with the same intensity of some of the others. Needs to learn to counter at the top of his pass rush in order to clear and soften the edge. I think you could have something in year 3, and I'd expect him to be a late 3rd or early 4th round prospect.

  1. Boye and Ebiketie would be 1a and 1b for me (of those the 49ers have a potential shot at), leaning more towards Boye.

But Paschal just looks like a guy that could be really good in this scheme. I get real Ronald Blair vibes. Doubt he goes round 2. Maybe round 3, but I think he might last to round 4 as he doesn't have the typical build. Like Blair, he'll probably be seen as a tweener by a lot of teams. But 49ers like those sorts of guys.

    1. Same Scooter. Bonitto wouldn't be a bad consolation prize.

Good call on Paschal. I like him. Think he'll carve out a role for himself in this league.

  2. I have a question about Jimmy G's shoulder surgery. If the team has to cut him, will they be on the hook for any kind of injury money?

    1. $7.5m injury guarantee, but it is offsetting (i.e. if another team pays him $7.5m or more, the 49ers owe him nothing).

    2. They won't cut him. He's a backup for some, but he's at the top of the bottom half of the league or right near it. I think he'd be a perfect fit for the Colts, and think they could win the division with him. Titans would be their only real threat.

The expectation among many around league is Chiefs DE Frank Clark is traded, released or his contract is reworked. His $26.3M cap hit a tough sell for KC. Watch for 49ers as potential new home.

    2. The more interesting nugget re Clark and 49ers rumours is that the 49ers see him as a fit for the "speed rusher" role. Sounds like that type of edge rusher is where they are leaning.

    3. You guys think it's a coincidence that this draft is full of "speed rushers"?

  4. Do you guys think that one of the things that might be holding up a Jimmy G trade is the need/desire for Jimmy G to negotiate an extension with the acquiring team?

    5. All we need is just "ONE more domino to fall in place" ... said everyone about THREE dominos ago! lol

The "holdup" is that Jimmy is currently hurt, and will be unable to throw a football until early July AT THE EARLIEST, maybe longer, and on top of that he is currently scheduled to make significantly more money on the final year of his contract (2022) than he is worth.

The 49ers are currently more than $9.0M OVER the salary cap, and other QB needy teams understand this. Therefore the 49ers are stuck between an injured Jimmy Garoppolo, and a hard place, and are doing everything they can to salvage whatever value Jimmy has left, which is less than they originally envisioned as early as November.

    6. I don't see the Colts interest in Watson. I think they're prioritizing leadership at the position.

    2. Razor, with all due respect, let me ask you a specific question about Garoppolo's value:

The Steelers are now out of the QB market, so that's one less potential trade partner for Jimmy. The Colts and the Steelers were the two teams that were favored to land Jimmy, with the Colts, in my mind, being the most probable fit for Jimmy. However, there is a lot of buzz connecting Marcus Mariota to the Colts.

My honest question would be: why would the Colts trade a 2nd or 3rd for Jimmy now when -

      a) the 49ers are getting more and more desperate to salvage compensation for Jimmy by the hour, because we are literally on the cusp of FA, and the 49ers are currently almost $10M OVER the cap? Why not just wait until the 49ers are forced to release him?

      Or

      b) Why not sign Marcus Mariota, who is going to be a FA, and is currently rumored to be high on their list? He would not only cost the Colts ZERO in draft capitol, but he would also cost the Colts significantly less in salary/cap space?

Marriota was a higher draft pick, he is younger, more mobile, more durable (and Marriota could actually start throwing as soon as OTA's), and he's rumored to have a great attitude, and a very professional demeanor in the locker room?

I'm just curious because Marriota seems to have comparable intangibles, and while he may have a different skill set, he's younger, and his overall production is comparable as well.

      Delete
    3. Marriota went from starter to backup. Trubisky went from starter to backup. I'd hire Jimmy in a New York minute over both of those guys if I had a team ready made to win now.

      Delete
    4. Fair enough, Razor.

You and I clearly have differing opinions of Jimmy's value. The NUMBER ONE ability I look for out of any football player, regardless of position, is availability. And this is especially true at the QB position, because it's the hardest position to replace both short term and long term.

Imagine a scenario where Chris Ballard trades a 2nd round pick for a QB who has been the most injury prone starting QB in the NFL, bar none, during the last 4 seasons, and along with Jimmy comes the entire $25.5M he's due on the final year of his deal, and Jimmy's shoulder ends up taking a little longer than 16 weeks to heal, and isn't even available to throw a football by the start of training camp? And not only that, how do you even work out a proper extension for Jimmy, if that's the plan, when you can't even see him throw a football, and can't be reasonably certain when he'll be healthy enough to do so again? And imagine a scenario where, on top of that, Jimmy continues to get injured at the same outrageously high rate that he has over the stretch of the last 4 year?

Isn't that how GM's get fired?

At least with a QB like Marriota, if he doesn't work out, you haven't risked nearly as much in terms both draft capitol, and you only end up eating a fraction of his salary/cap space.

I know darn well which option I would take if I were the Colts GM!

    5. We can agree to disagree politely then. No need for that fan card you played with Scooter the other day. Do me a favor and ease up a little. We're lucky to have Scooter, and besides that his glasses have no rose colored tint to them. Mine might have a tinge but I digress.

      Delete
    6. Well, I did try to take back some of my wording, but the blog wouldn't let me post anything else for whatever reason.

Scooter is a really smart guy when it comes to football and he's a brilliant writer. But I'll admit that it does chap my hide when fans are more interested in towing the company line, and are reluctant to criticize their team for fear of being labeled a bad fan.

I feel like it's important to hold team coach's and team executive's feet to the fire when they make poor decisions that hurt my team. I felt like it was absolutely outrageous to hold onto a QB whom you've already told the world that you don't trust, and don't believe is the answer, after spending a record amount of draft capitol for his replacement. I felt like anything short of winning a Super Bowl at that point would essentially be a wasted season. I applauded them for drafting Trey, but never in the world did I imagine a scenario where rolling with Jimmy after trading for his replacement, would yield a championship. And what really bothered me is that I felt like the 49ers were primed to win a championship. They already came up short with Garoppolo in 2019, despite earning the number 1 seed, and in fact Kyle had to go as far as to try and hide Jimmy during the 2019/20 postseason, because he clearly didn't trust him. 49ers HOF QB Steve Young echoed these exact same sentiments, because Steve Young has been in the trenches, and he understood the inherent problems with trying to win a championship with a LAME DUCK QB! And make no mistake, Razor, Jimmy became a lame duck QB the moment the 49ers spent 3 ones and a third round pick on lance. At that point Jimmy became a $26M "bridge QB". When was the last time a team won a world championship with a $26M bridge QB? I don't think it's ever happened. But you know what is common .... making it to the Super Bowl with a QB who is on a rookie contract, that's what. FIVE STRAIGHT YEARS now, a young QB on his rookie contract, has taken his team all of the way to the Super Bowl.

If Lance comes up short, well at least he's gaining critical game experience and the 49ers have an addition $25.5M to spend on free agents this offseason, and are making progress towards the ultimate goal. If they come up short with Garoppolo, what do they have to show for it? $25.5M less to spend in 2022, and a young QB who still needs experience?

I just don't know how any true fan can call any season a success when your team has one of the most talented all around rosters in the league, but doesn't even make it past the conference championship game?

That's where I get really upset Razor, because to me .... that's the equivalent of lowering the bar for what one was a proud franchise who didn't call coming up short a successful season.

Can you imagine Bill Walsh saying something like - "well, we made it to the conference championship game, so that's a success, and that's good enough for me"?

It's SUPER BOWL or BUST, man! That has to be the mentality. Anything short of that is just asking for failure. And if it's a "transitional year" ... then transition damn it, don't try to have it both ways!

      Delete
    7. Anyways, I am ready to stop litigating the decision to keep Garoppolo at this point, I promise!

I just want to turn the damn page! And if that means just releasing Jimmy, SO BE IT!

      Delete
    8. This is different times than Walsh. Everyone is under a cap. Complete parody throughout the league except for the dysfunctional ones.

      Delete
    9. Different times yah, but it all levels out. The 49ers didn't have to deal with a salary cap back in the glory days of the 80's, but neither did any other team. That's not what separated the 49ers from the rest of the league. What really separated the 49ers, IMO, is that Bill Walsh had total conviction in himself, and he instilled a championship mentality. Sure, his WCO was ahead of the league early on, but it's a copy cat league, and has been long before Bill Walsh.

Would we ever hear Bill Walsh day, "well, we made it to the conference championship game, so that's a successful season?"

Heck no. Especially if his team finished 3rd in his own division, and eventually lost to a division foe.

The 49ers weren't always the most talented team all throughout the 80's, IMO, but they did have a competitive edge because Bill believed that anything less than winning a Super Bowl simply wasn't good enough. And if you do end up coming up short, you better at least be making your team better in the process. You can't come up short in one year, and decide to run it back with the status quo the next. You have to identify your weakness, and turn that weakness into a strength.

Somebody needs to sit Kyle down and explain that you can't run it back with a lame duck QB, and expect that will be good enough.

    10. Anyways, I am sick and tired of talking about Jimmy G, and his 2021 injury riddled collapse!

He was very good over the last 5 games of 2017, and then he became an injury riddled mess. I cannot wait to stop talking about this guy, and start talking about some of these key free agents.

I am starting to get nervous though, because I expected the 49ers to be in a better salary cap position by today.

    1. In two minds about it. He was a solid guard but his pass-pro wavered on critical third-down pass plays. It's tough to get quality O linemen these days but the time has probably come for finding a younger replacement.

From Larry Holder in the Athletic:
"Tomlinson struggled a bit in pass protection this postseason, though. He surrendered an 11.3 percent pressure rate, fifth-worst among all offensive lines in the playoffs, and allowed four pressures in each game against the Cowboys and the Rams."

      Delete

  12. Maiocco reported that he’s hearing the 49ers are being aggressive on the cornerback market, and they’ve reached out to the “top guys.”

My faith in Maiocco as an "insider" declined every year in the ShanaLynch era and it hit rock bottom in his strong assertion that Mac Jones was a Kyle favorite. That's where he resides now in my book.

His sources could be right but that would fly against everything that ShanaLynch has done so far. They only spent money on FAs in the first year when Niners had expansion franchise-level talent. Since then they have done what good front offices do: use FA to plug gaping holes and draft-and-develop talent. Occasionally, they may trade to get a useful piece (like Tomlinson and Sanders).

Niners do not have gaping holes in the defensive backfield that requires overspending like some team will do on Jackson or even Gilmore -- unless they can be had for Sherman-type money like 3 years-$30M. Sherman brought relevant experience and great leadership qualities that likely accounted for about 20% of that price.

Or maybe ShanaLynch are headed in a different direction by making high-priced splash signings?

    ReplyDelete
  13. 49ers two main FAs are now both signing elsewhere.

Tomlinson to the Jets on a 3 year deal for over $40M, and DJ Jones to the Broncos on a 3 year deal worth $30M.

A shame to see them go, but 49ers were never going to bring them back at that price.
