Examining the fit: CB Charvarius Ward

By Scooter_McG

The NFL's legal tampering period ahead of the start of the new league year has commenced, and with it the 49ers have seen their two prize free agents find new homes - Laken Tomlinson has reportedly agreed to terms with the New York Jets on a deal worth over $40M over three years while DJ Jones has signed with the Denver Broncos on a 3 year $30M deal.

The team has some ready made replacements for those two roster spots already on the books with 2020 1st round pick Javon Kinlaw and 2021 2nd round pick Aaron Banks. Kinlaw was already seeing starter snaps next to Jones before his knee injury in 2021, and will now likely slide over with Armstead staying at DT in 2022. Banks on the other hand was largely unseen last season but the expectation will no doubt be that he can take one of the two starting OG spots in 2022 (noting RG Brunskill also remains unsigned at this point in time).

While the team sustained some losses on the first day of the legal tampering period, they also made their first foray into the 2022 free agent market with the signing of former Kansas City Chiefs CB Charvarius Ward. Rumours from the combine were that the 49ers were expected to be very active in the CB market, and this was borne out as they inquired about the top two CB options in JC Jackson and Carlton Davis (both of whom were signed quickly to deals of $16.5M and $15M per year, respectively). Once those two players were signed the 49ers turned their full attention to Ward, agreeing to terms on a 3 year deal reportedly worth $40.5M, with $26.7M in guarantees.

The currently reported deal will no doubt include some agent speak and the full $40.5M is unlikely to be realised, but even so at a reported value of around $13.5M per annum shows how serious the 49ers were about upgrading the CB position.

Ward brings a nice physical presence at 6'1" and around 200lbs, and has the speed to carry WRs down the field with a 40 time of 4.44s at his pro day.

Ward was originally signed by the Cowboys in 2018 as an undrafted free agent out of Middle Tennessee, but was traded to the Chiefs before the season started. He was active for 13 games as a rookie (2 starts) but worked his way up the Chiefs depth chart thereafter. In his four year career he has played in 56 regular season games with 43 starts, recording 4 INTs and 29 passes defensed. He has also played in 11 post season games (10 starts), with 0 INTs and 9 PDs. He is still only 25 years old and is an ascending player.

Based on data from Pro Football Reference, since 2019 Ward has allowed a completion rate of 51.1% against his coverage during the regular season, while QBs have posted a passer rating of just 79.7 when targeting Ward. His 2021 season effectively mirrored his average since 2019, with a completion percent of 51.3% and QB rating allowed of 79.4. Next Gen Stats suggest Ward's completion rate allowed was lower at just 45% in 2021 (second lowest among defensive backs), which according to PFF dropped to 38.3% when in man coverage, while he also allowed the lowest average separation on targets (2 yards).

In addition to his coverage, another area that no doubt appealed to the 49ers was his missed tackle percentage of just 5%, ranking Ward for the lowest missed tackle percentage among the top 75 outside CBs in tackles since 2019.

Ward is exclusively an outside CB. However, he has left and right CB flexibility having played both sides during his time with the Chiefs and was often matched against the opponents top WR. He excels playing in man coverage, which should pair nicely with 2021 3rd round pick Ambry Thomas who was a primarily man cover CB for Michigan. With these moves in back to back years it indicates the 49ers may be considering using more man coverage concepts moving forward.

The signing also gives the 49ers three CBs they should feel comfortable with on the outside, as he joins Moseley and Thomas. Moseley will likely be given first shot to start opposite Ward, but Thomas should be given an opportunity to compete for the job. With K'Waun Williams a free agent there is also potential that Moseley may be moved to the slot when the team is in nickel.

I have to admit this was more money than I anticipated the 49ers to put into signing a CB, and it is probably more money than many expected Ward to get. But contract aside, the signing of Ward looks to be a good one for the 49ers and should help solidify a position that last year was exposed as being perilously thin and required a large number of snaps from the likes of Josh Norman and Dontae Johnson, and even resorted to using a washed Dre Kirkpatrick. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if the team looks to add another veteran CB for depth such as bringing Jason Verrett back on an incentive laden deal.

  1. Yea, bringing Verrett in on another deal as a backup would be great.

Looks like Mosely and Ward will be our starting outside cb's with Thomas replacing Mosely who slides in to man the slot.

  2. Solid signing.

Hope this signing (with amount of gtd money) does not cause malcontent for Mosely/Williams.

The 49ers restructured the contract of DE Dee Ford, creating $4.96M in 2022 cap space (voidable years added), per source.

Ford has been limited by injury since arriving in San Francisco, but picked up 3.0 sacks in 6 games played last year.

  4. Price seems a little high for the talent. I will say he is an improvement over Johnson and Norman. Bring back Verrett on another one year deal and the Niners might have something in the CB room.

    1. Yes! He still can't seem to get the Offense right.

Made a ridiculous deal for Christian Kirk at $18M, when Lions got a better WR in DJ Chark for $10M.

  6. Thanks for the prompt write-up, Scooter.

"I have to admit this was more money than I anticipated the 49ers to put into signing a CB, and it is probably more money than many expected Ward to get."

Same here. I thought Niners would be scrounging the bargain bin for a vet CB signing. Wonder if it signals a strategic shift towards a more balanced defense over the next two seasons where not all the eggs are in the D line basket.

Once Bosa gets paid, Niners will be forced to work with young players and vets resuscitating career. No more Bosa AND Ford. And there is no certainty that all the bargain vets or draft picks will work out. So better coverage on the back end will be increasingly important.

Tape here shows excellent man coverage and very good ball skills.
Had only 2 PIs last season. Can cover while turning his head around.

Read that he was a good student and of good character. Definitely and ascending player.

  9. As always, we'll have to wait to see the structure of his contract to fully judge this signing, but I really like this player, and I am happy they steered clear of Gilmore. Not exactly a ball hawk, but he sticks to top WR's like glue, and he's a brilliant tackler which ShanaLynch covets from their DB's.

I do find the Burks signing a little odd, but I am sure it will prove to be a solid signing.

My biggest question for this FA period remains: Why in the world is Jimmy Garoppolo still on this roster? If they keep this guy around around for any period of time during the new league year, I will have run out of words to express my disdain!

    1. How's this for another puzzling twist to the 49ers QB situation .... according to Jordan Schultz, the 49ers are going to be meeting with DeShaun Watson.

I could be wrong, but if these reports are true, this seems to absolutely reek of ShanaLynch trying to manufacture an excuse for the Jimmy Garoppolo "trade" fiasco that seems to be getting more and more likely by the minute!

      Delete
    2. OK, it seems to be a false report .... thank Goodness for that, because I was really starting to wonder what is happening behind the scenes in Santa Clara!

    3. Relax 49Reasons we will have the same outcome like when we finally picked Trey and not Jones, so Jimmy will be gone book it./

So far good signings Burks and Ward, especially Ward that's a huge addition cuz he has a lot upside.

Now a extra WR and OL help.

  12. NFL insider - Benjamin Allbright: "The market on [Garoppolo] has cratered," Allbright said Tuesday on 95.7 The Game. "I don't think the Colts are in on him at all. I think it's going to be Mariota. I think the shoulder surgery thing is just adding salt to the wound there, and it's just a bad situation.

"The Niners were hoping to get a pair of twos [for] him, and at this point, they'd be lucky to get a day-three pick [for] him."

    1. So what went wrong with the 49ers' plan? Did they overvalue Garoppolo? Was it the injury?

"I think it's a combination of things," Allbright continued. "I think they overplayed their hand. Any time you're going to see the Washington [Commanders] take on Carson Wentz's salary and give up two draft picks to do it, and not go after Jimmy Garoppolo, who's been to a Super Bowl, I think that means you overplayed your hand because I feel [offensive coordinator] Scott Turner and the offense over there in Washington would be just fine with Jimmy Garoppolo at the helm. Carson Wentz is a giant question mark.

"I think what they've done is they just overplayed their hand, in the end. Everybody knew what was coming. They knew he was going to be available at the end of the year, so they went out and made their plans and their contingency plans, and it wound up you get around the circle, and he's the only one without a chair left to sit in."

    3. Either that, or Scooter is trying to come up with some kind of logical explanation for the league's flat-out rejection of Jimmy G, other than the reasons I've been crowing about over the last 13 months.

It's that you either take take me for a troll, or just some whiny fan to likes to complain, despite the fact that I was one of Kyle's biggest supporters before the Mac Jones charade, and his subsequent miscalculation at QB debacle.

      Delete
    6. All I know is that .... until Kyle gets over this fear of failure that he has, whether it's not having the guts to put teams away after his team controls a game for the first 3 QTRS, or pulling off a blockbuster draft move to replace his current QB, only to not have the guts to follow through with the second step of the process of moving on from a QB whom he had been trying to replace for years.

      Delete
    7. Until Kyle gets over this fear of failure he has, while simultaneously thinking he's always the smartest man in the room, he's going to keep coming up short.

He needs to learn a sense of humility, and he needs to start playing to win, instead of playing not to lose.

    8. You say its not about that, but then repeatedly post an "I told you so" comment as soon ad anything vaguely supporting your stsnce on JG occurs. Funny how quiet you were between weeks 17 and the 4th qtr of the NFCCG.

    9. Correction: week 18, 49ers 17th game of the season. Leading up to that game there was no shutting you up about how playing JG would be the death knell of the season.

    10. Do I really need to post Jimmy's stats during the 49ers final 5 games 2021? You know, those games that separates champions from also fans?

I never said the 49ers weren't talented to go all the way, in fact I thought the only thing that could stop them was Jimmy, and in the end, I was right, as usual!

On that one .... I told you so, and I was right. If the 49ers only got moderate play out of the QB position down the stretch, they would have won a SB in 2021/22, just like they would have won a SB in 2019/20!

      Delete
    11. He was the death knell, DESPITE the fact that, outside of the QB position, they were the most talented team in the NFL. You know this, Scooter, don't pretend like Jimmy wasn't a problem!

    12. When have I pretended Jimmy G wasn't part of the reason they didn't beat the Rams in the NFCCG?

You make a living off straw man arguments.

      Delete
    13. Well, I guess we'll never agree about the decision to keep Jimmy, Scooter.

Just so you know, I was ready to just move on from this entire dang bone of contention of mine, but ShanaLynch just won't let me.

Jimmy is like a bad rash. It's annoying, but you live with it, hoping it will soon go away. You put ointment on it, and it seems like it's getting better, but it just won't quite completely go away.

      Delete
    14. One things for sure .... the 49ers have completely blown this entire Garoppolo situation (IMO), but boy do they know how to earn compensatory picks.

Holy cow, what a fantastic haul of comp picks!

      Delete
    15. I wouldn't worry. JG won't be a 49er this season. All that is left to determine is when he will be gone, where to, and whether it will be via trade or release.

  14. Garoppolo 2022 season stats: 3,810 yards, 20 TD's, 12 INT's, 53.3 QBR

Those aren't the numbers of a championship QB in this modern era.

And not only that, he had the most dynamic offensive player in the NFL on his own team, and an above average running game/offensive line/defense!

Garoppolo sucks, and you can't win a Super Bowl with him!

I know it, you know it, and the rest of the NFL obviously knows it!

  16. Jimmy did a good job for the 49ers and all the players have his back. We don't get to where we are today without Jimmy G. Sure, his time is over but I think it's poor taste to belittle him on the way out the door.

    1. Agreed. Jimmy was a breath of fresh air with that run at the end of 2017. He gave every 49er fan a lot of hope that the team would be relevant again. Maybe it didn't work out, but it was the first time in a long time that I bought a player's jersey. I for one wish him well and will root for him as long as he isn't playing the 49ers or if his team wins it affects the 49ers playoff position.

      Delete
    2. Yep, exactly razor/ cubus. They took a shot on JG in 2017 and he took them to two NFCCGs and a SB in his two mostly healthy years. They unfortunately didn't go all the way and part of that lies at the feet of JG and his limitations, but he was also part of why they got that far in the first place. The team record without him speaks clearly enough of how important he has been to the team's success in 2019 and 2021. He's not a great QB, but he's a competent starting QB and a great teammate that his teammates believe in and rally behind.

As the 49ers continue to need to pay their elite players it will be harder to maintain an elite roster around the QB and stay competitive with an NFL average starting QB. Kudos to ShanaLynch for realising JGs limitations and being willing to go all out to try and find an elite QB last year. Now it is Lance's turn and hopefully he can be that high level QB that can make the team a perennial contender.

      Delete
  17. Just to be clear, I never thought having Jimmy as the QB was a mistake before last season. I didn't think Jimmy was ever getting any better, and growing as a QB, and we all saw his limitations in 2019. But I still wasn't unsatisfied with the Garoppolo situation until he got hurts yet again, and missed 2/3rds of the 2020 season nursing injuries. It was clear at that point that the team needed to find a replacement.

My issues are basically all about the 2021 offseason, and the decision to hold onto to Jimmy as a lame duck QB, despite spending a fortune on his replacement, and needing to get that replacement onto the field in order to properly develop, and potentially take the 49ers all the way, ASAP!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I can accept an argument about development of Lance in 2021, but the idea that Lance was going to provide a better chance of winning the SB in 2021 was always pie in the sky thinking for mine. Lance literally would have made history just by making the SB.

For mine it was always a case of if they were happy with 2021 being a mini-reset year, let Lance take some lumps, then sure, start Lance. If they wanted to have a chance at a SB, even if a slim one, then JG was the correct option.

      Delete
  18. The 49ers claim a team offered them a 2nd round pick for Jimmy last offseason, and they turned it down? Are you kidding me? This guy had already missed almost 1/2 of the 49ers games since being named the starter, and Kyle thought that Jimmy's value would go up as a lame duck QB? That's just DUMB!

And now if it isn't clear to you guys what the rest of the league thinks about Jimmy, I don't know what else to tell you.
