The 49ers rollercoaster of a season continued against the Tennessee Titans on Thursday Night Football. As has been the case a number of times this year, this game was very much a tale of two halves. The 49ers dominated the game in the first half, racking up 191 yards to the Titans 55. But things turned around in the second half as the Titans wrested away momentum to take the lead and ultimately the win.
Here's what stood out to me.
Slip, slip, slipping away. For the 49ers, this was yet another game they let slip away. In addition to significantly outgaining the Titans in the first half, they also had multiple scoring opportunities and should have led by at least 17 at the break, if not by 21. However, they would only end up scoring 10 points in the first half after an intercept in the end zone stopped one drive while an overthrow of a wide open Kyle Juszczyk, which would have been an easy TD, led to a FG.
Those missed opportunities would come back to bit them quickly in the second half, as they failed to stop multiple third and longs on the Titans opening possession to allow a FG, then Jimmy G threw his second intercept of the day deep in 49ers territory which led to a TD and a tied game. From there the Titans controlled the game until late in the 4th quarter when Deebo took a slant for a long gain to near the Titans goal line, leading to a TD to level the scores at 17, but ultimately left enough time for the Titans to drive into FG range and finish the game.
Bad Jimmy. Before the game I wrote that I saw this coming down to three things: the 49ers being able to run the ball against the Titans strong run defense, Jimmy G staying efficient and avoiding turnovers, and the 49ers winning the turnover battle.
It all started out very well, with the 49ers mixing up the run and pass very effectively, while also making use of play action boot and misdirection to get the passing game going. The first drive was a masterclass in play scripting that was executed perfectly to open the scoring. The second drive looked to be going the same way until Jimmy G forced a ball to Kittle in the end zone when he was well covered, resulting in an INT.
In fact, Jimmy G didn't miss a pass until that INT. Up to that point he looked confident and poised in the pocket and on the move, hitting his receivers in stride.
After the INT it looked like Jimmy had shrugged it off, as he often does. The next drive was again very efficient as they drove down into Titans territory. But then on a beautifully schemed up play that saw Juice break free down the right sideline, Jimmy G inexplicably overthrew him on what would and should have been a wide open TD. In the end the 49ers would have to settle for a FG, for what would be their last points until late in the 4th quarter.
After that glaring miss of Juice everything changed. Jimmy became far less decisive and started misreading plays far too often. He should have been picked by a LB dropping back into a middle of the field zone on the next drive, on what was the 49ers worst sequence of plays of the game (it was followed by a run to nowhere, a sack and almost fumble, then a shanked punt). After letting time expire at the end of the first half, Jimmy's next series resulted in another INT in the middle of the field throwing to a well covered Deebo Samuel. On the next drive, the offense was moving the ball effectively but then on 4th and 6 Jimmy G and Aiyuk were not on the same page, and on replay it looked like Jimmy was in the wrong as he led Aiyuk after Aiyuk and slowed to sit in gap in the zone coverage.
While he was able to lead a TD drive late in the 4th quarter, at the end of the day this was a game that Jimmy G was largely responsible for the 49ers loss.
Throw it up to AJ. The 49ers defense completely shut the Titans down in the first half. The Titans finished the half with 32 net passing yards and 23 rushing yards. They were unable to get anything going on first down which consistently had them in 3rd and long situations.
At the start of the second half the Titans continued to struggle to get anything going on first down, but they started to have success on 3rd down largely due to getting the ball to AJ Brown. The 49ers would eventually get a stop for a FG, but it was a sign of things to come in terms of the Titans shift in game plan. They continued going to Brown for the rest of the game, whether it be against zone or man coverage, and he would repeatedly make big plays for the Titans. He would finish the day with 145 of the Titans 209 total receiving yards. And when the 49ers finally started giving him extra attention the Titans did a nice job of getting it to wide open check down options.
The inability to shut down one WR without devoting significant help from the safeties and LBs is a cause for concern moving forward. Assuming the 49ers make the playoffs they will be facing teams with some very good WRs.
Big picture. The 49ers still remain in a pretty good position to make the playoffs, however, this loss all but rules out any chance of doing better than the 6th seed and, depending on results, may mean the 49ers need to run the table from here. The margin for error has certainly gotten smaller.
More concerning is that this game once again showed how fragile the 49ers route to success is with the current roster. If they can't run the ball, it is very hard to have confidence in the team's ability to win consistently. And if they lose the turnover battle, forget about it.
The way the season has played out, they are the sort of team that nobody would want to face in the playoffs, but equally it is hard to imagine they could find that successful formula enough times in the playoffs to go all the way.
Hey Faithless, a disappointment for sure. But raise your hand if you had this pegged as win in your pre-season picks.
ReplyDelete2 awful ints from Jimmy, that miss to Juice, but don't overlook Titans converting 9 3rd downs, with an average 11 yards to go. Defense was gassed reflecting the travel and very short week. The upside is during this mini-bye Niners can lick their wounds and let anger fester over one that got away. I wouldn't want to be the Texans or Rams.
So while 5 seed and division are both out of reach, this still wasn't a must-win. If the team can put together 3 mistake-free games in the postseason, a tall order considering the regular season, there's plenty of reason to believe they can beat anyone.
The only thing more pathetic than Jimmy's performance last night, and Kyle post game press conference, is ribico's apology tour!
DeleteMost of us understand that it's unrealistic to expect our favorite team, which has unfortunately been woefully inconsistent all season, to suddenly morph into a completely different team once the playoffs start.
DeleteIt's a QB driven league, and Jimmy Garoppolo is the 49ers weakest link offensively, so do the math. This isn't exactly rocket science!
You can't afford for your QB, who happens to be your highest paid, and most important player on your football team, to also be your most inconsistent player offensively! Not as a wildcard team!
And then to have your QB go into his postgame press conference with an AW SHUCKS ATTITUDE, acting like single handedly losing the game for your team in an important, nationally televised primetime game, is no big deal ..... that's not what we expect out of a FORTY NINERS QB!
I'm not sure which was a worse look:
DeleteJimmy's postgame excuses, or
Kyle's postgame excuses for his $27M QB, pretending like this loss was a total team effort. It wasn't!
Last nights loss was MOSTLY on ONE player, and unfortunately that ONE player happens to play QB, which is a deathknell for a football team that aspires to be something great!
I don't know how many more times I can say this ...
DeleteThe NFL is A QUARTERBACK DRIVEN LEAGUE! It's the one position where you need to be at your best, to truly be considered a contender. The 49ers made the Super Bowl in 2019 IN SPITE of Jimmy Garoppolo, and the odds of that happening again are staggeringly steep, and nearly impossible as a west coast wildcard team!
Faithless? Really?
DeleteGiving up those 3rd downs was a concern, but if it wasn't for Jimmy G's mistakes the team would have won and won easily. The defense did more than enough in the first half to win the game if Jimmy G didn't waste opportunities and turn the ball over.
Yes, the team can look at this as one that got away and let it fuel them. A pity they seem to need so many such games this year. How long before they need another reminder I wonder?
While I doubt it's intentional, I find it ironic that
Deletethat JG has exposed the fallacies that KS and JL sold
the 9er fans for the 2021 season.
Fallacy #1: 9er fans were told the 9ers retained JG's services for the 2021 season, because he could take the team to the SB. And how's that working out?
Fallacy #2: Trading 3 first Rd and a 3Rd Rd draft pick for a QB, that could lead the 9ers in the future and they were in the right position to do it.
If in fact they believed the 9ers were a Super Bowl contender why'd they spend 3 1St Rd and a 3Rd Rd pick on a backup quarterback? Why not allocate those same resources for a top CB and OG and make the players (team), around JG better?
BTW: If you say KS did draft OG Banks and 2 CB's, does that not call into question KS's ability to evaluate player talent? Did any of those draft picks help JG or the 9ers win even one game?
That raises the question, if KS & JL never believed JG was capable of winning a SB, why is he a 9er? Why is he getting paid $26+ Mil (>13% of the 9ers cap)?
So you ask, why does it matter? If the 9ers hope to be a SB contender in 2022, then this offseason the 9ers have seven starters (Laken Tomlinson, D.J. Jones, K'Waun Williams, Jaquiski Tartt, Arden Key, Jason Verrett, Azeez Al-Shaair as free agents who they will need to re-signed, along with extensions for Nick Bosa and Deebo Samuel! Any one know where that money is coming from? Would $26+ Mil. have helped alleviate the problem?
I know I don't have answers to any of these problems. Does anyone care to explain to me, how to fix it?
I've been raising these exact questions all season long, GEEP.
DeleteThose are the GOLDEN questions that I was raising while this season was still in its infancy. This plan never made sense from a logical team building perspective, for those very reasons.
If ShanaLynch truly believed that this team was a contender, with the biggest need being insurance over concerns with Garoppolo's inability to stay healthy, why spend all of that draft capitol to bring in a QB who isn't ready to help this team win games this season, if in fact Garoppolo got hurt again?
It's the dumbest, most nonsensical roster building plan I have ever witnessed in 40 years following this team!
49Reasons
DeleteOh yes, I do know you've been venting on "these exact questions" all season long. Please be advised that I'm exercised the elixir that filters out al inputs from below 6K feet altitude (skiing), lol! I find that it's essential for maintaining my mental health.
Had to shovel 5-6 ft of new snow, to access cabin and we're planing on skiing diamond Peak tomorrow.
Wishing everyone, a Merry Xmas and a happy new year!
We got 1 min possession more.
ReplyDeleteTime to rebound against the Texans and Rams.
I have more issues with the lack of self critique by Jimmy G.
Moving on from the debacle that was Jimmy G vs the Titans, there is something happening on offense which I honestly never thought would be the case - Tom Compton is making a case for being brought back to compete at RT next year. Yes, his pass protection is not great, but it has actually been steadily improving the more games he's playing. And his run blocking has been exceptional. To the point where the right side is pretty much as good as the left side to run behind (maybe better?).
ReplyDeleteI think his level of play at least brings into question whether it is worth having McGlinchey around. It is a bit of a moot point since they've already exercised his fully guaranteed 5th year option, but maybe it is worth exploring trade options. At minimum, I wouldn't be trying to extend McGlinchey this offseason when a journeyman can be just as effective at a fraction of the price.
Scooter
DeleteI agree, T. Compton has been a Pleasant surprise!
McGlinchey 2021 Salary = $4,585,430
McGlinchey 2021 salary = $4,585,430
T. Compton 2021 Salary = $1,075,000
Laken Tomlinson 2021 salary = $5,500,000
Trade McGlinchey for draft pick, use the $3.5 Mil difference to pay Compton additional $500K and extend Tomlinson With the remaining $3 Mil from McGlinchey
savings.
BTW; how was your diving trip? Diving the great barrier is top of my bucket list. Any recommendations?
for diving guide?
I don't think Tom Compton is going to be named to the pro bowl anytime soon, but yah, he's been shockingly better than I could ever have imagined.
DeleteI really don't care much of a drop off between Mike McGlinchey and Compton, and in fact they actually have very similar strengths and weaknesses.
The harsh reality is that Jimmy G can't be counted on to get us to the SB. If Garoppolo sticks around for another year it could cost Shanahan and Lynch their jobs. Hypothetically, even if JG is here next year and fails to get the team to the Superbowl, it would be considered a wasted year. I could only hope that Lance is ready enough to handle the rignes. At this point I would rather have a bad QB, because at least it would be easier for the FO to make a quick decisive move, rather than living with an inconsistent QB that looks like a pro one week and a rookie the next.
ReplyDelete"John Lynch ‘accidentally and unknowingly’ likes tweet suggesting the 49ers leave Jimmy Garoppolo in Nashville"
ReplyDeleteThis is one of the funniest headlines pertaining to the 49ers that I have ever read in all of my years!
I'd say this is the ultimate Freudian slip!
OMG, I can't stop laughing at this headline!
DeleteI cant imagine that a former top player like JL likes JG his playing antics and especially his sideline and post game antics.
ReplyDeleteAnd its a given that the majority of the faithful are done with Jimmy G except some apologists.
ReplyDeleteSomething needs to change cuz you cant keep defending your starting QB who still plays to inconsistent and has a disgraceful sideline attitude, and has a severe lack of self critique.
That's not a leader of men./
This one was rough. I cannot get a gage on this team. In the games where I hate the matchups they play well and beat their opponent. In the games where they have good matchups they find a way to lose.
ReplyDeleteObviously this loss falls squarely on Jimmy but we have discussed that ad nauseum and I would prefer to look at who will be here next year. This team is has some elite players but they also have some garbage players. The Titans were out multiple o-lineman, and were missing starters everywhere, and they found a way to stop SF's pass rush and complete passes against a secondary that literally had twice the number of db's as their receivers.
This was disappointing for me because unlike at quarterback, we don't have a potential answer on the roster for next season.
