And the same to you Razor!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for keeping the blog going. I go to it several times a day. Every day.
You're welcome, George!
Deletesecond that Razor!0- much appreciated........ even though I am having a hard time processing the loss the other night- Mayfield is showing me how easy it is to throw bad passes though.
DeleteI would also Like to thank you and all the others who have kept this going.
DeleteOver the years I got to enjoy PD community and it was a shame that they decided to let it die on the vine. Then you stepped up and saved the community that remained. It is greatly appreciated. An additional thanks should also go out to the other contributors and posters.
Hopefully we will all get a pleasant surprise under our trees in the upcoming new year in the way of a miraculous playoff run.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of You!
ReplyDeleteWishing a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all the fans here -- especially to Razor and Scooter for keeping this watering hole filled with their regular brew.
ReplyDeleteHere's hoping for a deep playoff run by the maddeningly inconsistent Niners of 2021-22.
Merry Christmas guys.
ReplyDeleteI'm assuming that the 'Garoppolo sticking around thru 2022' CHARADE can be put to rest at this stage?
I'm considering that an early Christmas present.
I don't know about you guys, but I am Soooooooooooooo ready to watch Trey Lance ball out!!!! And I am so over watching Jimmy having yet another primetime brain freeze meltdown!
Cheers! Go Niners!
It's just not feasible to spend that much draft capital and then waste the first TWO years of Lance's rookie contract, so Jimmy did us all a favor that we can officially put that to rest!
DeleteJimmy Garoppolo will NOT be back in 2022, and unfortunately, I don't believe there is much trade value for him either, because of his contract. Maybe the 49ers work out a creative deal with incentives or something like that.
BTW, Can somebody please explain Jimmy's AW-SHUCKS attitude! You don't then go into your post game pressor and DEFLECT blame!!!! He doesn't seem to really even care that he has sucked every time he plays in Prime Time in recent seasons! Not good enough!
It was already an impossibility at his cap number, they only way he could have stayed would have been with a significant reduction in salary.
DeleteMerry Christmas everyone!
ReplyDeletewishing all a Merry Christmas and happy New Year from

If you plan skiing at Tahoe, be advised of the conditions

Brutal. I'm not gonna lie .... it looks a little too cold, too wet, and too windy for this Bay Area boy.
DeleteMy biggest question is .... are we talking wet, heavy and slushy snow, or are we talking about light and fluffy powder?
Hopefully it's the latter.
I-80 closed on a 70-mile stretch due to the Tahoe snowstorm. More rain predicted for later today in the Bay Area. Very happy with all the precipitation in California's drought situation.
Delete49Reason
DeleteFri. afternoon; Rain had turned to snow ~10 miles east of Colfax. Temp (@ 5PM) = 22deg at Truckee & Incline Village.
Shoveled 4.5'- 5' of dry snow to get into cabin. Another 1' to 1.5' of snow since Fri. eve and snowing now! Weather forecast says heavy snow until 28th.
Eagles Nest run at Palisades Tahoe (was Squaw), at 9K
ft has >9' of snow with another 3'- 4' projected by 28th.
I used ski wax for dry snow (not powder).
Merry Christmas to all
ReplyDeleteHappy for Davis Mills who seems to be improving game-to-game playing with little talent around him. May end the season looking better than Wilson on a team with talent comparable to the Jets. Mills always had the arm, decent accuracy, and the football IQ (e.g., good ball placement). If he can start healthy and get some support from coach and front office, he may become a starter in this league.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, Jim Harbaugh didn't believe himself when he said back in 2012 that Josh Johnson would be playing in the league for a long time (Johnson was then fighting for a backup spot with the Niners which he didn't get, IIRC). Johnson, a local from Oakland and Harbaugh's QB at the University of San Diego, is starting today for another Harbaugh, the Ravens, at the age of 35 -- his 13th NFL team!
Scooter, how do you pronounce your nickname?
ReplyDeleteIs it "McCorkle", as in Mac-Corckle,?
MAC McCorckle JONES, 12/26: 14/32, 4.5 AVG, 0 TD, 2 INT, 31.4 Passer Rating
Scooter, isn't it crazy how much weaker a noodle-armed QB looks in the cold, dead air of December up in the northeast?
Who could have predicted that? lol
Lol! Again, never seen anyone so desperate to be right. Every bad game, bad play, you are absolutely sweating on.
DeleteNow, when you say "every bad game", I am assuming you mean every game so far in the month of December, now that it's truly winter in the northeast?
DeleteA little over a month ago, on this bolg, I told you to just wait for December, didn't I?
12/6: Mac Jones completed TWO passes, lol
12/18: (Dome) 74.2 Passer Rating
12/26: 31.4 Passer Rating
You can see the way this thing is trending, can't you?
And BTW ... no, I am not psychic, if that's what you are thinking. It's simply common sense. The ball doesn't exactly jump off of Mac's hand, does it? In fact, he almost uses a shotput motion, similar to Philip Rivers, only not as pronounced. I've been following football long enough to know that when you throw a football this way, and the weather gets cold, or windy, or both, like it does in the North East EVERY December, it becomes much more difficult to throw with any kind of consistency. So when you consider this, as well as lack of overall athleticism, you have a scenario where Mac Jones will likely always struggle at this time of year, at least as long as he plays home games at Foxboro Stadium.
I am certain that Bill Belichick understood this might be an issue, and that's probably why the Patriots never even bothered to move up in the draft in order to make sure that they were able to draft Mac Jones.
Sorry Scooter, but that's just the way physics work.
And just to be clear, I told you to "just wait for the cold, dead air of December", or something to that effect. I also mentioned that, besides the cold dead air, that the competition also tends to heat up in December, as we draw nearer to the end of the season.
DeleteI don't see any scenario where this doesn't become something that dogs Mac Jones throughout his career, just as long as he plays in an outdoor stadium in the north-east. Not only that, the Patriots toughest divisional foe, also plays outdoors in the same, bone-chilling weather of the north-east, which is why Mac Jones was limited to TWO completions just two weeks ago. This sets up to be a HUGE advantage for Josh Allen and the Bills moving forward.
You will see soon enough, that when the book on Mac Jones is done and written, that 49Reasons called it before you, and a lot of national media types.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
DeleteBTW Scooter, I'm just curious ...
DeleteQuestion: Who would you rather have as your QB, if you played your home games outdoors, in the north-east?
a) Josh Allen
b) Mac Jones
c) Trey Lance
I have to give McCorkle credit though. Unlike Jimmy G, Mac Jones went into his post-game presser and made no bones about the fact that he wasn't nearly good enough today, and I respect that.
DeleteMac Jones: “It was obvious the Bills were the better team. What we do on Sundays is what matters. I didn’t perform very well today.”
Today's performance drops Mac Jones down to 22nd in Passer Rating, and 19th in Total QBR.
Mac hasn't been horrible by any stretch, but when you consider that Jimmy Garoppolo is ranked 7th, and 10th respectively, it's easy to understand why drafting Mac Jones would have been a downgrade, certainly for this season.
JIMMY GAROPPOLO (career): 99.1 Passer rating, 56.2 QBR
MAC McCORKLE JONES (2021): 89.6 Passer rating, 48.2 QBR
I don't have a Football Outsiders account, so I don't have access to a lot of the advanced analytics & metrics (maybe Razor can give us an up to date- Garoppolo / Mac Jones DVOA comparison), but hands down, according to PR and T-QBR, Jimmy G has been the better QB in 2021, and by a healthy margin. We'll see if Mac Jones is as close to his ceiling as I think he is, moving forward.
The good news is that it will be easy for us 49ers fans to keep track of Mac Jones' career, because for us .... he and Trey Lance will always be associated with each other.
Also, if Trey Lance's Total QBR is anywhere near 48.2 next season, I'll be hugely disappointed.
The good news for Trey Lance fans is that, unlike Passer rating, ESPN's QBR formula takes mobility into account.
Dude, I have ALWAYS said my preference was Lance. And I would obviously take Allen over either of them as he is proven.
DeleteI don't know why you are so invested in Jones being bad, but it is hilarious 😂😂😂
By the way Scooter, I am not "desperate" to be right, I AM RIGHT!
DeleteI said that the 49ers couldn't justify going from Jimmy G, to Jimmy H, when you consider the amount of draft capital that they gave up! Whatever benefit provided by having a QB on a rookie contract, would be entirely offset by the cost of draft capital (3 - 1st round picks, and a 3rd rounder). Having given up what the 49ers gave up in order to move up to the #3 spot, the 49ers simply had to swing for the fences, and draft a player who could be, at least potentially, a huge upgrade at the position.
Mac Jones isn't that guy. Sure, he is an elite processor, but his processing ability is offset by his lack of arm talent, and lack of mobility, and that was at the heart of my case against drafting him.
And sure enough, after 15 games - Mac Jones is now in the bottom 3rd of the league from a statistical standpoint. And that's despite the fact that he is on a very complete and talented team, and is also playing for one of the greatest, if not THE greatest Head Coach / Offensive Coordinator tandems in NFL history.
And if Mac Jones had been drafted by the Jaguars, or the Jets, he'd never be getting the overblown recognition he's been getting for the Patriots, because he wouldn't be winning ... that much I promise you!
Scooter, I know you preferred Lance, I remember that well.
DeleteBut you also "made the case" for Mac Jones, and my resistance to that idea nearly got me institutionalized, so yah, I'm still working through it, lol.
Can you blame me?
If Mac Jones was the 49ers QB, would the 49ers be better or worse off right now?
DeleteTrust me, my posting Mac jones' ineptitude isn't a knock on your expertise. I always had the feeling that you were mostly making the case for Mac, simply because you thought there was a decent chance that Mac would be the 49ers future QB, and so you were mentally preparing yourself for the possibility.
DeleteAnd, BTW, I do think Kyle wanted Mac Jones, at least initially, which also really bothers me.
Unfortunately for me, I never got past the denial stage, and as you know, my sanity was actually affected by the charade that was the 49ers 2021 first round pick.
I respect your knowledge and expertise, Scooter, I really do. It's Kyle Shanahan's ability to evaluate the position that I don't respect, and I think he's absolutely clueless when it comes to seeing the big picture.
The 49ers would be worse off than they are now, not having Trey Lance in development, or 1st round picks until 2024.
DeleteFor me, like I said above, Mac Jones was never going to be enough of an upgrade to justify using all of those draft picks. He's basically Jimmy Garoppolo 2.0.
Mac Jones is the superior processor compared to Jimmy, that's for sure, but the problem is his physical shortcomings, especially his lack of arm talent, offsets his processing ability.
Mac Jones isn't doing anything special as a rookie. When I watch him I see what I expected to see, more or less. He was simply drafted into the perfect situation, and by the perfect team.
But for the Patriots to sit pat and draft him at #15, that's a very different thing than spending 3 firsts and a third, don't you think? That's where I have to draw the line. You can't afford to give up that much draft capital for an average QB, and Mac Jones is an average QB at best!
For instance, for me, regardless of how good of a processor a QB might be, there are certain throws that he needs to be able to make effortlessly, and Mac Jones passing ability (in terms of arm talent) is anything but effortless.
DeleteWould the 49ers be better off if they had simply stood pat at #12, and drafted Mac Jones?
DeleteIn the long run, probably, but I don't think they'd be better off this season.
Jimmy still makes rookie mistakes, but Mac Jones is an actually rookie, and Mac doesn't have exceptional mobility to fall back on, or to enhance his game, so he wouldn't be an upgrade for this season, IMO. And the numbers certainly bare that out. Jimmy is having a much better season than Mac, at least statically.
DeleteYou don't think Jones' stats would be better in this offense? Watching Jones and JG, I don't see anything the 49ers do that Jones couldn't do very well. I think at worst they would still be 8-7 with Jones. And have a lot more cap space, or have been able to use that cap space for other positions of need.
DeleteLong run, obviously of Lance is who I think he is, they should be better with him. But I was just referring to this year.
Yes, I'd agree with that, Scooter. If ShanaLynch would have drafted Mac Jones at #12, I would have been fully on board. If they stand pat and drasft Mac at 12, then it does make a lot more sense from a roster building perspective.
DeleteI think Mac makes less mental mistakes than Jimmy, and he does have a knack for throwing his receivers open under ideal conditions, but I do also think Jimmy's quick release has it's advantages as well.
But you can't trade away a franchise record amount of draft capital for a QB who is rated as the 15-20th best overall prospect (5th QB), IMO.
Shanahan and Ryans better be game planning for Davis Mills and the Texans. Texans beat the Chargers despite having 18 players on the COVID list, including 8 starters on defense, top WR Brandin Cooks and 3 starters on the offensive line.
ReplyDeleteMills outplayed Trevor Lawrence last week and outplayed Justin Herbert again today.
