General/Open Discussion Friday

Jimmy Ward is 47 for 48 in tackling. He missed one tackle against Swift and the Detroit Lions. Just think if you had 11 guys on defense that could tackle like that. That's my number one quality when evaluating defensive starters.

  1. We wake up this morning with the Niners currently in the playoffs at the #7 position. I think #2 in the NFCW (or #5 in playoffs) is still up for grabs. Despite the name players, I'm not sold on the Rams. Look who they've beaten. Bears, Seahawks, Lions, Giants, Texans... true, they had early season wins against Bucs and Colts and the same "who have they beaten?" can be said about the Niners. But Niners and Rams are two teams going in different directions IMO and I'm counting on Stafford on ultimately leading his team to ignominy as he has his entire career.

No doubt all games going forward are big, this week against Minnesota is real big, but the week after against Seattle even bigger. If the Niners own the Rams, Seattle has owned the Niners. That has to change. With playoffs at stake and Seahawks playing so poorly, I think it will.

Here's to the Niners winning out.

    1. GPS, yeah if with a win against Minn. Otherwise it's more of a must-win.

    I agree, BUT THIS HELPS!

49ers Week 12 practice report: More good injury news for 49ers
The good injury news came again for the 49ers in their Thursday practice report.

Only one player, running back JaMycal Hasty was a non-participant. Defensive lineman Maurice Hurst returned to practice for the first time since Week 7 when he initially suffered the calf injury

    Limited participation:
    DL Maurice Hurst (calf)
    RB Elijah Mitchell (rib, finger)
    OL Laken Tomlinson (ankle)

Hurst is the only real surprise here. Mitchell is still working back from surgery on his finger and Tomlinson suffered an ankle injury last week that head coach Kyle Shanahan said would limit him in practice. Participation from this group is a good sign, but their statuses for Sunday are still up in the air.

    1. I expect Hurst and Mitchell to be back for Seattle.

  3. Jimmy Garoppolo didn’t mince words Wednesday about how much the Vikings’ defensive line attrition could help the 49ers for Sunday’s home game. It’s a big advantage for us,” Garoppolo said, before doling out ample respect to the Minnesota backups he’ll encounter Sunday at Levi’s Stadium. Already out this week among the Vikings’ defensive line are starters Danielle Hunter (injured reserve), plus run stuffers Dalvin Tomlinson (COVID reserve) and Michael Pierce (injured reserve).

  4. Yup biggest game of the year. A victory over a playoff contender is always huge as it's a two-game swing for the victor.

Right now, the Niners strength is the offensive running game while the Vikes weakness is the defensive running game. The obvious - Niners are going to run the ball and the Vikes are going to 'have' to sell out to stop it. If JG continues his upward trajectory the Vikes have no chance in hell in wining this game. Of course, two things come to mind, home field disadvantage and which team is going to show up.

  5. Glad to hear McGlinchey's surgery went well, but who knows what kind of setback he could have. If I was him I'd seek out help from Bosa. Same goes for Kinlaw, although his injury wasn't as severe.

  6. Hoping they can keep Mitchell out one more week...

    1. I think they will. Tomlinson, will he be held out a week?

    2. I just don't know if they can afford to when Deebo is the best available rb- unfortunate Hasty isn't able to go as I thought he has looked better this season- I think last year he just played a bit light and couldn't break tackles.

    3. It's an important game if he can go, play him and rest him against the Hawks. It's make it or break it time.
