“I definitely think Aiyuk can do it and I have no problem putting a starting receiver back there. That’s never been a philosophy of mine and it hasn’t changed yet. So, I feel we got some guys on our team who can do it.” “You’ll see," Shanahan said. "I don't need to announce the starting quarterback, I don't think I need to announce the starting punt returner, either, but I bet you guys could figure it out.”
When I saw that Shanny included Travis Benjamin in the injury report I knew it had to be him, because that's not something I recall a head coach ever doing for a practice squad player. What's everyone else's opinion?Btw, I'll be attending the game in Detroit and may provide some live in game reporting via video upload here on the site.
I think Shanahan also said he feels the PR is on the 53, while Lynch's comments suggest it may have been Webster they had "planned" on.
ReplyDeleteBenjamin makes sense to me. But I am wondering if they play of Sherfield has made the coaching staff feel more comfortable risking Aiyuk back there, if they now feel confident Sherfield can cover an injury at WR with little drop off.
I like your point about Sherfield. He might turn out to be better than a WR3.
DeleteInteresting, Scooter. You could very well be correct.
DeleteI certainly feel better with Sherfield in the mix, but it seems like an unnecessary risk. The opportunity to carry a punt return specialist as a 4th or 5th WR, seems like the smart way to go, and that's my issue with it.
DeleteIt just seems like an unnecessary risk to me.
KNOCK ON WOOD!
DeleteNice little writeup on Woerner explains perhaps why they were willing to blow half a million dollars on Pruitt:

Niners signed a punt returned to the PS, Isaiah Zuber:

If they go with Sanu it'll be because he's never fumbled. Not for his 6 yard average returns.
