Corresponding Move

The 49ers converted about $7.8M of S Jimmie Ward’s 2021 compensation into a bonus, resulting in about $5.85M of space. San Francisco is at about $7.3M in space.

Looks like Jimmy Ward will be around for awhile, but who do they have their sights on? Richard Sherman? Mitchell Schwartz? Or is this just in season maneuverability money?

  1. I would go with the third option unless the 49ers can sign a more significant player other than Sherman or Schwartz.
Sherman was exposed in our SB appearance and I don't see any positive trajectory at this point in his career.
Schwartz missed time due to a back injury and is now scheduled for surgery.
Signing either of these two players would not enhance the 49ers prospects, IMHO.

  2. Pretty sure this was just to create some in-season wiggle room. You usually want around $10M spare to start the season to cover having to sign players due to injuries.

    1. Crazy to think how far Ward has come.

    2. Even during his first few seasons I thought he looked like a keeper aside from the injury issues. But now that he's being allowed to play as a safety he's gone to another level.

He reminds me of Carnell Lake. Not flashy, but really versatile, assignment sound, great tackler and the athleticism to play man coverage on the boundary if needed.

    3. Yea, his injuries almost cost him his career in San Francisco. I just remember how as a rookie he got burned when Fangio hung him out to dry.

      Good comparison, Scooter.

  3. Per David Bonilla, 49erswebzone
"For the Lions, left tackle Taylor Decker has been ruled out. Rookie Penei Sewell is expected to start in his place and go against Nick Bosa, Dee Ford, and the rest of the 49ers pass rushers."

Although Bosa will only play in special packages, this will be an interesting match up between Bosa and Penie.
Sewell is only a rookie, but he may be one of the most powerful Tackles in the NFL.
Should be fun to watch this perfect match of raw power vs quickness and finesse.

  4. According to Josh Norman the 49ers have been trying to sign him for months. Clearly the team recognised the issues at CB and identified Norman as their target. Wouldn't be surprised if he starts this week despite only just joining the team, with Moseley struggling with injury.

He came across as a pretty smart guy in his presser.

    1. Didn't he say they'll tell him what the coverage is and he just has to go out and execute that coverage?

    2. Pretty much. He just needs to do his assignment.

  5. Just an aside from the current comments.
But is the picture of the 49ers helmet something that they may wear this season?
I feel like I missed this if this was announced earlier.
