That was fast. #Colts QB Carson Wentz will have surgery to repair his foot, per coach Frank Reich. He’s out up to 12 weeks, but could be much less. They will remove a bone in his foot.
Let's get the trade scenario's going:
Jimmy Garoppolo- Lance would have to convince Shanny and the locker room he's ready, and the Colts would need to send a 1st round pick.
Gardner Minshew- Day 3 draft pick.
Nick Foles-Another day 3 draft pick but the psychological ramifications to Wentz might be a factor.
Yah, I respect Ian, but I don't believe it would take a 1st to pry Jimmy away from the Niners.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I also don't believe Indy would be willing to both give up a high draft pick, and take on Jimmy's contract, so it's basically a moot point.
Reports, front office and head coach have consistently said all year it would take a 1st round pick.
DeleteI never thought Ballard would trade for Wentz but here we are. They're in win now mode. A rookie isn't going to move the needle for them. They need a veteran quarterback. Maybe they call up Rivers and beg him to return from retirement.
Colts aren't in the drivers seat here. Niners definitely aren't going to sell low. But, are they comfortable with promoting their current 3 or 4 QB to #2? They could find themselves in the same position as the Colts are now.

DeleteRemember guys, the salary cap has gone DOWN. First round picks have never been more valuable than in 2022. If Wentz was going to miss the entire campaign, well then maybe, maybe you find a way to afford both guys, but that's not a move you make if your expecting your starter back by mid-season. Sorry.
And from what I know about Chris Ballard (one of the smartest GM's in the league), I'd put the odds of him trading for Jimmy at less than 1%.

Dee Ford participated in team drills. Jonas Griffith intercepted Trey Lance in end zone. Azeez Al-Shaair left practice early with apparent leg injury. Kyle Shanahan will provide update soon.

* After being limited during previous practices, second-year defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw got involved in team drills for the first time during training camp.
* Trey Lance's first reps of team drills, once again, showed off his mobility. He started with a read-option followed by a designed rollout with a run option.
Lance's first three plays during red zone drills all resulted in touchdowns. The first two were passes to fullback Josh Hokit and wide receiver Mohamed Sanu. The third was a touchdown run.
* Hokit wasn't the only fullback to haul in a touchdown pass. Later, Kyle Juszczyk got into the end zone on a pass from Jimmy Garoppolo.
* While Griffith hauled in Lance's first interception of training camp, it is worth noting that the linebacker nearly had one on a similar pass during last Friday's outing.

DeleteI suspect Shanahan will continue to state there is no competition, and continue to split reps as they are currently, up to the point reporters are no longer allowed to attend practices. But then, if Lance keeps on impressing I wouldn't be surprised if a competition plays out behind closed doors.

ReplyDeleteI think the salary cap implications would preclude the Colts from trading for JG. But I am not ruling out a potential trade before the trade deadline if someone makes a good offer.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the FO and KS might not consider just getting the $26 million off the books as a "good" offer. Players are obtained via draft capital and salary cap capital. If Jimmy is shipped out, I wouldn't be surprised if the draft capital is 4th round or worse.

Actually, GEEP, I'm for keeping Jimmy G because I think it is too hard for anyone to learn KS' playbook this quickly. I'm just commenting on what I think the FO might accept. I'm not saying they should do it now. This idea that the Colts might give up a 1st or 2nd for Jimmy G and take on his large salary cap is absolutely absurd.

If there's a chance that the Niners could start the rookie QB this season, I'd like their 5 best OL's starting along with him.

Add my guy Deebo to that list. He's such a unique WR. One reason I'm in the corner of those who thinks Lance should start week one, is because Deebo has elite burst, and another gear call completely, and that aspect of his game is being wasted because Jimmy doesn't throw over the top very often at all. I'm not the only person who thinks he's elite coming off the ball, and can do so much more than he's really been asked to do so far.

The 49ers, and we know that JG is capable of getting the team to the playoffs when healthy.
Sure, all the reports have Lance looking good in training camp. But to sure, all practices are measured and mapped out. And QB'S are not being hit. As good as Trey has looked, we have no clue how he will react to the speed and violent collisions of the NFL.
Garoppolo may still make some questionable throws at times, but he has shown good and quick recovery
time after a mistake and in most instances has still won the games.
I would like to see Shanahan slowly assimilate Lance in situational plays to give him an opportunity to adjust to the speed of the NFL.
There is a reason why Deebo went out of his way to tell Kyle that "this guys got some balls"!
DeleteDeebo knows Lance is going to make him a better receiver. Deebo knows that he's going to be able to better take advantage of his elite burst off of the LOS, with a QB who is more than willing to take those shots when they present themselves.
Jimmy G just isn't that guy.
Because when you go up against elite CB's, you better be able to get off of the ball (against press) if you want to beat them deep as a WR. And Deebo does that about as well as anyone in the league. Even better than AIYUK, IMO.

ReplyDeleteSo we are now 6 days of camp in, and 1 padded practice down, and Lance just continues to impress and stack good days together. Today was apparently his best yet, going 13 of 14 and throwing the best pass of camp so far with a 50 yard laser to Sherfield for a TD while rolling to his left and jumping in the air to throw. Also had 5 runs and looked good on those too.

DeleteHarris Jr. you only get so many chances as a low draft pick. His injury was unfortunate and I imagine worse than what they've let on. For that reason I doubt the Seahawks pick him up. My money is on clearing waivers and reverting back to the 49ers.
Well that is what they thought of DJ Reed and now he is the starting cornerback for Seahawks along with Witherspoon. Let's see.

Delete7 days of practice in the books, 7 straight days that Trey Lance has impressed. And most importantly, getting better each day. Past two practices have been exceptional by all reports. And Mike McDaniel outlined he is already at the point where he is correcting his teammates.
ReplyDeleteI still think they will continue to give JG the 1st team reps until practices are closed to reporters, but once they are the competition will be on. Lance is looking too good to not let him compete for the starting spot.
It'll be fun to see how sharp our swords are, both offensively and defensively.

ReplyDelete* On Tuesday morning, the atmosphere was electric in Santa Clara as the 49ers had their first padded practice of this year's training camp. The main attraction was a Trey Lance deep ball to Trent Sherfield that resulted in a touchdown, but the offensive line was the real star of the show on Tuesday, as the unit absolutely dominated the 11-on-11 portion of practice. I’ll break down a few of the players who really stood out to me.
* Alex Mack was clearly the best player on the field Tuesday. On his first rep during 11-on-11’s, Mack pancaked Javon Kinlaw, and the two engaged in a minor tussle following the play in the first real chippy exchange of camp. Mack followed that up with another dominating rep against Kinlaw and finished practice with multiple pancakes of first-team interior defensive lineman.
Mack’s veteran savvy was on full display Tuesday, and his experience will pay great dividends for Kinlaw’s development as the two engage in one on one battles in the trenches over the course of camp. The interior of the offensive line looked as strong as it has in years, and the unit as a whole looks extremely stable, with Mack anchoring the middle.
My "sleeper" so far, for the 9er offense:
ReplyDelete* Trent Sherfield has had an exceptional start to training camp, and he continued his upward trajectory with an outstanding performance in Tuesday's practice. With Deebo Samuel sitting out with groin tightness, Sherfield got extended looks with the first team.
He put his speed on display and presented a strong case for how he could potentially be used as a weapon in a scheme that has relied on receivers with substantial run after the catch ability. Sherfield also offers plus value on special teams as a player who has experience returning punts at the NFL level. Sherfield has made a strong case that he deserves a spot on the final 53 man roster.
Sherfield is a Special Teams ace, so you know he's uber athletic! Sounds like he's a fantastic fit along with Samual and Ayiuk.
DeleteSanu is WR3a, and Sherfield is WR3b. That works for me!
DeleteJordan Mathews looks fantastic at TE. Definitely a natural position for him!
Kyle is keeping Hurd as his secret weapon X-factor. He looks exceptional running drills, and 11's on 11's, he's just not being targeted.
Both 9er CB and WR positions were considered to be weak, but if Sanu, Sherfield and Hurd stay healthy, that no longer appears to be true. And that is not factoring in TE's Dwelley Matthews and Kittle
DeleteAssuming they, as well as WR Aiyuk and Dedbo, stay healthy, the problem could well become having enough balls for everyone.
The CB position however, with all the injuries, does appear to be the 9ers achilles heel.
Some good things happening from defensive players
ReplyDelete* DJ Jones continues to build on his strong start to camp. Jones has impressed during 11-on-11 drills. Jones batted down a ball at the line of scrimmage and also had a couple of dominant reps defending the run, including a play where he drove Daniel Brunskill to the ground as he crashed the line of scrimmage and blew up a running play for no gain.
* Jason Verrett continues to look like a shut-down defensive back. However, he looks strong during drills and had another great performance in 11-on-11 drills, including a couple of reps won in his head-to-head matchups with Brandon Aiyuk.
* Dee Ford participated in a substantial amount of reps during 11-on-11s and has shown flashes of his former explosive self. The 49ers are being cautious with Ford’s workload. Still, there is a reason for cautious optimism that Ford can be a major weapon for this defensive line, particularly in pass rush specific situations.
