Role Reprisal

Did the 49ers sign Anthony Zettel to play the role of Kerry Hyder until The Bosa Constrictor is ready to hunt? Nick hasn't been involved in much physical activity, no 1vs1's or 11vs11's, and yet he's missed the last 2 practices with soreness. This is what I expected, and why I cautioned patience in his return.

Ryans , "Bosa's still just, you know, day to day taking a maintenance day and coming back, progressing," Ryans said. "When it's time for him to be back in he'll be back out there." "The main thing for Bosa is just him taking the time to make sure he has the confidence in his knee to go out there and perform at a high level," Ryans said. "Once he gets, you know, the reps he needs, gets the confidence in his knee and he'll be fine."

How long before we see Bosa in live action? I have no idea. I just hope there's been no setbacks, and none moving forward.

  1. I have nothing to back this up with, but my guess is Bosa didn't feel the knee was quite right during the first two days of practice. So training staff has backed him off. Not a setback per se, but just not quite where Bosa and the team hoped he may be.

I suspect he won't practice much this TC, and is on a limited snap count to start the season.

    1. Agreed. We won't need him to be himself until November.

  2. “Nah I don’t think it’s a competition yet,” Trent Williams told KNBR's "Murph & Mac" on Thursday. “Jimmy is playing lights out, I know that. A lot of people won’t say that but, I mean Jimmy has been balling. He’s got the offense moving, so I don’t really see a quarterback competition at this time.”

“Trey is an outstanding talent. It’s hard to deny that," Williams said. "You see him throw the ball and you seem him run the ball and you know that’s a generational talent. We’re lucky to have QB1 and QB2 be extremely talented, and they both have what it takes to get us where we need to go.

“Trey has just turned 21. I don’t think it would be a good thing for anybody if someone tries to rush him. We have time to let him develop and personally I think that’s what’s best. Trey has been developing at a very high speed, but for right now Jimmy is in control, and I think everybody is okay with that.”

  3. When Trent Williams speaks, it comes from experience.

  4. IT'S JUST MY OPINION, BUT HERE IS HOW I SEE IT HAPPENING...

    * QB: Once Lance plays against the starters we’ll have an opportunity to watch him throw the ball and run. If that happens, we’ll understand why people are gushing about the 21-year-old rookie. * Lance has carved up the backup players, NOT THE 1ST team defense, to the point where he’s putting up video game numbers.
    * Lance has gone 20-22 during the last two practices, and that’s likely while averaging over ten yards per attempt. He’s slinging it, but it’s time to bump the level of competition up from rookie QB against back up players, to the first team starters. Has Lance been impressive? Undeniably so. The question I'm asking, is whether we’ve put enough weight on the rookie gunslinger doing all of this against the 49ers' backups.
    * Jimmie Ward, Jason Verrett, and Fred Warner have made life a living hell for the starting offense. There hasn’t been an explosive play allowed. The difference in smarts and speed should challenge Trey, which is precisely what he needs: A new challenge if he's to be the starting QB.
    * If Lance shreds the 1st team defense as he has the 2nd team, then the coaches are all out of excuses, and it’s time to prepare the rookie to be the starter! Until then, as KS
say, he'll start when he shows us he's ready!

    1. That is what he's said....Anthony Zette: "“I believe passion and energy is an essential part of being a leader and elite athlete,” Zettel wrote in a statement posted to Instagram. “I have always said that when you lose those components, it is time to find something different that motivates and inspires you. Today I share bittersweet news that after much deliberation and reflection, I have decided to walk away from the sport that has given me so much over the years.”

    2. Well, I guess Zettel won't be filling in for Bosa then...

I think they do need some sort of plan for that DE position on first and second down, if Bosa isn't right to go.
