According to Kyle Shanahan, there is no QB competition. That has been the public stance since Trey Lance was drafted - Jimmy G is the starting QB and Trey Lance, the QB they gave up three first round picks for, will be given a chance to sit and learn. This was the stance Shanahan and Lynch outlined during OTAs, before training camp started, and through the first seven days of training camp.
However, over the course of the first seven training camp practices, something happened that probably caught the coaching staff and front office a little by surprise. Trey Lance, the 21 year old rookie with just 17 college starts at a FCS school, looked nothing like an inexperienced rookie out of his depth. He looked the part of an NFL QB. He looked like a QB that was already picking the offense up quickly, processing well in scrimmages, throwing the ball with power, accuracy and timing, showcasing his elite athleticism, and routinely making "wow" plays each day of practice. In short, he looked far more ready to push for playing time than maybe most anticipated.
Shanahan's stance on the "no competition" at QB hasn't changed, however, he provided some additional clarity and potentially opened the door for a softening of the stance after today's practice. While continuing to stress that Jimmy G is the starter, Shanahan for the first time outlined that Trey Lance will start getting reps with the first team, and will get playing time during the season. At this stage, according to Shanahan, the plan is for Lance to play "situationally", i.e. in certain packages and certain situations, most likely packages that will be based around making use of Lance's athleticism and running threat and situations such as in the red zone.
The other interesting comment Shanahan made though was that the 2's (i.e. the second team players, or backups) are always looking to supplant the 1's (starters). And that Trey Lance is no different - he is working to try and supplant Jimmy G as the starter. Shanahan even went to say he sees the QB position as being no different to other positions in this regard, and that while typically with QBs it is a little more cut and dried, by having two QBs with different skill sets he sees the 49ers QB situation as being more a case of one where they can split snaps, like what you would see at other position groups.
So what does all this mean? Not much really at this stage. A lot of what Shanahan said was aligned with what he has been saying in the past and it already seemed clear the 49ers had plans to get Lance on the field for certain packages. But it does show that Lance is well on his way to earning playing time with the way he has performed in practice. And that, for a 21 year old rookie coming from NDSU after limited college experience, is a huge step and bodes very well for how the 49ers perceive his development at this stage.
But how long will it take for Lance's situational snaps to expand to the point he is the starter? If he continues to show well through training camp and practices, and he takes advantage of the situational snaps he is given in games, it will only be a matter of time before this 2 supplants the 1.
Lance will start if JG is injured for a period of time or if Jimmy completely flames out.
ReplyDeleteThat said, Garoppolo will need to do whatever it takes to stay on the field or it could become a Drew Bledsoe episode with Brady taking the reigns for good.
Not saying Lance is the next Brady, but then again...
Struggled a bit with handoffs but Lance is showing that Shanny and Lynch didn't give up all that draft capital in vain.
ReplyDeleteGood point. I'm worried about the handoff exchanges as well. Hope that as Trey gets more reps, this gets taken care.
DeleteI mean, they kid has just about a years worth of experience.
As AES says, "Lance will start if JG is injured for a period of time or if Jimmy completely flames out."
ReplyDeleteShort of that, Lance will be given a chance to start when he does to the D starters, what he's done to the backup D.
Lance has yet to be tested by Jimmie Ward, Jason Varrett,
Fred Warner, Nick Bosa, or Dee Ford and the starting D. When he does to them, what he's done to the back up players, the 9er coaches will have run out of excuses and will then give him a chance to start, because he's earned it, not given to him because the "fans" want it.
MUSIC TO MY EARS:
ReplyDelete49ers pass rusher Dee Ford offering reasons to believe he can be 100% after back injury.
If the 9ers can stay healthy and both BOSA and FORD are 100% healthy, the 9ers are a SB team.

ReplyDeleteStepping back from the QB discussion for a bit - I am really liking what we are hearing about the WR group. Obviously Deebo and Aiyuk look good, but sounds like Sanu and Sherfield are also impressing. WR depth might not be as big a concern as was feared.
ReplyDeleteHey Scooter, it's my understanding that Tartt, being placed on the "active PUP", isn't required to sit out the first 6 games. It's only once he is placed on the "reserve PUP", if that happens when they make the final cuts, that he's required to miss a minimum of the first 6 weeks.
DeleteDoes that sound right to you?
DeleteYes, that is correct 49reasons.
DeleteThanks Scooter. I thought that was the case, but some outlets are reporting that Tartt will miss the first 6 games.
DeleteOn a different note: Stick a fork in Josh Rosen! When Kyle goes as far as to say somebody had "taken a couple steps back" in camp .... that's the kiss of death! Not a huge surprise.
Sounds like Rosen still believes he should be competing to be a starter rather than happy to fight for a backup role. Sudfeld will be the 3rd QB.
DeleteRosen will be playing tennis on Sundays.
DeleteAs expected, it didn't take long for Frew Warner to become the 2nd highest ILB in the NFL. Leonard now takes the honour of being highest paid, with a 5 year, $99.25M deal paying him $52.5 million guaranteed.
ReplyDeleteThat's Fred, not Frew!
DeleteGlowing review from Albert Breer on Trey Lance....Nice to see that Trey Lance is detail-oriented and a hard-worker!!

Awesome article.
DeleteBreer really highlights how Lance has earned the right to play some this year through his preparation. It isn't being handed to him. And he is ahead of where Shanahan thought he'd be. The 49ers are in good hands no matter the outcome.
Meanwhile, Zach Wilson has the look of a QB who is in WAY over his head. The Jets' first Green & White scrimmage was dissasterous for the baby-faced QB, and word around camp is that the kid doesn't seem to have any command of his accuracy. He finished 11-24 on the day, with 0 TD's and 2 INT's, but he's lucky the numbers weren't far worse.
ReplyDeleteIt's early, and Zach may end up surprising me, but I do want to go back on record in my evaluation of Wilson - he never should have been drafted anywhere near the top 10!
Wilson is going to be an INT machine! He's may have good overall arm strength, but his functional arm strength is merely average, and he's a little guy who sprays the football all over the place.
DeleteWith the Jets picking at #2, now I understand why Kyle kept his QB choice under wraps!
Here's one for you guys:
ReplyDeleteFormer NFL scout says "BYU QB Zach Wilson is a 3rd round pick at best / will get scouts fired"

The funny thing is, this former NFL scout is Daniel Kelly. Kelly is a former scout with the NY Jets, under Bill Parcells, lol. He currently writes for SI-Detroit Lions, and is a contributing evaluator for Draft Diamonds.
DeleteThe thing is, these were my feelings about Wilson prior to the draft. Watching his tape, I saw a QB who has talent, but is exactly the kind of one-year-wonder QB I would expect to BUST at the NFL level!
Niners dodged a bullet on this one, IMO.

ReplyDeleteAs long as he doesn't fumble Saturday night, I think Shanny will officially open the QB competition at the following practice. The sooner he becomes the starter, the better (assuming he's not a fumble machine). He needs a lot of reps this year so he isn't green next year. Assuming he's not 100% ready, Shanny could employ the safe, run heavy, checkdown, clock chewing offense that he runs with Garoppolo, but with the added threat of Trey's legs and the occasional deep shot.
