Open/General Discussion Tuesday

Shanahan said Jalen Hurd just “didn’t feel right” this morning and that’s why he was doing work on the side. Shanahan says he hopes Hurd can consistently be back on the practice field before the 49ers have to make roster decisions

If that's not a shot across the bow, I don't know what is. Hurd is officially on the roster bubble!

The 49ers have announced the signings of defensive lineman Shilique Calhoun and cornerback Alexander Myres to one-year deals. They then waived cornerback Mark Fields and offensive lineman Isaiah Williams.

  1. I have liked Jalen Hurd since the 49ers drafted him, but I'm starting to believe that I simply like the idea on Hurd on the field. All actions or lack thereof are pointing towards Hurd not making the team.
I'm left to wonder if JH really has a passion for the game. But that's just one man's speculation, and I certainly hope I'm wrong.

Do you feel that if Jalen isn't ready for the season that the 49ers like him enough to put him on IR and bring him back later in the year?

    1. Unfortunately yeah, it is looking like Hurd will have an uphill battle to make the roster. Shanahan doesn't say things like that in the media without a reason. He did similar to Pettis last year. They are clearly losing patience with Hurd and his lack of availability.

It is a real shame as like you, I really like the idea of what he could bring to the field. Obviously so do the 49ers. Would hate to see that kind of talent go to waste. But maybe you are right, maybe Hurd just doesn't have the desire and passion to push through and make it work. There were obviously some question marks around that leading into the draft.

    2. Thing is IIRC wasn't it Hurd who was acting like an a**hole his first season during either OTC or training camp or both by not following the rules and hitting people hard (I believe he got in at least one fight maybe more). At the time it made me think he had passion just that he was misguided somewhat.

    3. Yep, that's correct cubus. Hurd got into a few tussles in 2019 TC due to his physicality.

I don't think he has an issue with being physical. I think he may have an issue playing through discomfort, though I stress the "may". His decision to switch to receiver to prolong his longevity, while imo a smart decision, may be an indicator he will make "business decisions" when it comes to his body.

    4. I had high hopes for him too, AES. Not sure they'd put him on that designated to return status. Don't they only get to put 2 players on that? If that's the case they may not.

    5. Scooter/Cubus, we'll see how he responds to Shanny's comments. That will give us some insight to his mentality.

    6. I have to agree.
Watching the way he moved at that size 2 years ago it left everyone salivating. He appeared so electric that SF held on to a non performer for 2 years. Sadly, I just can't see any way they can afford to do that for a 3rd year.

This is The Jalen Hurd Practice. He had back-back receptions from Trey Lance of 13 and 23 yards in a two-minute drill. He’s had three catches today.

  2. It's interesting that you brought up Pettis because it's starting to look like Hurd is following the same pattern.
Pettis played soft and seemed to avoid contact when having to go up for a pass.

I believe that Pettis played a big role in Shanahan and Lynch drafting Deebo and Aiyuk who are the opposite type of physical players.
Did Hurd leave Tennessee for Baylor because the physical contact was more minimal as a WR as opposed to RB?
It could be that Jalen' issue might be more of a mental issue than physical at this point.

    1. If Hurd doesn't make the roster watch the Seahawks sign him.

    2. A DJ REED replay? Let's hope not!

The Seahawks do have a roster spot open now that they released ALDON SMITH this morning.

    3. DJ REED should be a cautionary tale for the Niners. They clearly misjudged or misdiagnosed his injury. I was very upset that they gave him away to the Seahawks. He's arguably the Seahawks top CB now, and one of the only DB's on their roster who can stick with DK Metcalf. Plus, Reed I'd their first string kick returner. He's been a godsend for the Seahawks.

    4. I would think the Niners would IR Hurd, if his knee is still an issue, rather than take a chance on the Seahawks pulling another DJ REED with a talented 3rd round pick of the Niners

  3. 49ers working out safeties, including Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Andrew Sendejo.....
The 49ers have some injury issues at safety and they are looking at a handful of veteran options to bolster the group. Field Yates of ESPN reports that the team is hosting Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Clayton Geathers, Bradley McDougald and Andrew Sendejo for workouts.
Jaquiski Tartt has been on the physically unable to perform list since the start of training camp because of a knee injury and, via 49ersWebZone.com, head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Tuesday that he doesn’t “see him coming back anytime soon.” Tarvarius Moore is also on the PUP list and Tony Jefferson has been out of recent practices.
McDougald was with the Jets last season and Sendejo played for the Browns while Clinton-Dix and Geathers were both out of the league.

  5. The 9ers can't afford to carry WR dead wood year after year.
Hurd is running out of time to perform and will likely be cut, unless he stands out in preseason games and shows he can contribute.
Sanu and Sherfield look to be the backup WR's

  6. I agree GEEP. Hurd will need to have a couple of good preseason games to earn the trust of Shanahan.
The frustrating thing for me is that Jalen has shown that he could be a threat in the red zone per his first preseason game two years ago. Now he's in the "show me" stage of his 49ers early career.
Hope Hurd "is feeling right" on Saturday.

  7. Former Spartan Shilique Calhoun signs deal with San Francisco 49ers....
Former Michigan State defensive end Shilique Calhoun has inked a new deal with the San Francisco 49ers. Calhoun is receiving a one year contract to join the Niners defensive line.
Calhoun was a standout end at Michigan State, a 3 time all-Big Ten selection, and 2 time Big Ten champion. Calhoun turned that into becoming a third round pick for the then Oakland Raiders.
Calhoun spent three seasons with the Raiders, before signing with the New England Patriots, where he spent the past two seasons.

  10. Just to pivot back to my earlier comments on Hurd. He will need to have a strong showing in Saturday's preseason game. But if he can't play on Saturday, he could be gone by the following Monday.

I firmly believe that Shanahan has given Jalen the benefit of a doubt. This grace period has to be due to Shanahan' knowledge that Hurd is talented and envisions having him on the field. Saturday might be the day of reckoning for Hurd. Unless there is a real serious issue that Shanahan deems it necessary to give Jalen more grace, a no-show by Hurd could be his last day in a 49ers uniform.

    2. Clinton-Dix is no scrub. He was voted as a top 100 (NFL player) by the players, for multiple years in a row. He's had a year of to freshen up so there is a decent chance that he can provide quality depth at SS (and he has experience at FS). It's a move they should have made weeks ago, IMO.

      Delete
    3. Why was he still available if his stock is bullish?

      Delete
    4. He might have simply been waiting for injuries to open up an opportunity that he felt was a good fit. We see it every year.

      Delete
    5. I am not saying he's a savior, but he very well provide quality veteran depth. It's a good move as far as I can tell, and like I said, probably should have signed Ha Ha instead of Jefferson, IMO.

    6. I'm hearing Tartt might be ready for Detroit. I don't think Dix will be on the final roster.

      Delete
    7. Yah Razer, I can't argue with that. Ha Ha might very well be just a camp body unless he's back to his 2017 form, but that's OK.

This is the kind of news that I've been waiting to hear about Hurd for two years. That said, I still believe that he's still on the bubble and that he will be under the microscope the next couple of weeks.
    But today's report was encouraging.

    1. The good news is he hasn't mentally checked out, and the head coaches comments seemed to light a fire under him.

    2. Shanahan likes Hurd, or at least the idea of Hurd so he has a chance to make the roster if he can stay on the field which is a big if. In his favor is the fact there are no slam dunk options ahead of him at the WR position for the final 2 spots. I would imagine the team will give him every opportunity to make it.

      Delete
    3. Thing is they know they can bring back Sanu at any point after week 1 if Hurd lays a turd.

    4. Going to be interesting to see which players get the preferential treatment in the first preseason game. That will give us an indication of who is looking likely to make the roster.

  15. "The good news is he hasn't mentally checked out"

I certainly hope so, as that was one of my biggest concerns. But if a player needs the head coach to light a fire under them to get them motivated is also a concern because it speaks of lack of passion.

My thinking is that if Shanahan is fine with the Hurd situation and is willing to continue to have patience with him, I'm good with it.
