One of our long time posters, George thought it'd be fun to give our odds on Jimmy Garoppolo being the week 1 starter for the San Francisco 49ers. I believe the oddsmakers have him at -350. For myself, as long as Jimmy stays upright, he's the starter with an 85% probability rate. Let's hear everyone else's take!

ReplyDeleteFor Jimmy G, it's health, health, health.
OK, I admit this is not a good parallel.
What we do know is that when JG IS healthy, he wins. But Garoppolo also needs to be surrounded by his key weapons (Kittle, Mostert, Deebo and a solid Oline to succeed).
My early prediction: a healthy Garoppolo will get us back to postseason play.
I think that's right.
DeleteMy take is that Lance will start on opening day and Jimmy won't be on the roster. Lance seems to be outplaying Jimmy right off the bat. He seems just as accurate and has demonstrated not just a better arm, but a much better arm. Yes, there aren't pads, but whether pads or not, Lance hasn't demonstrated his escapability yet. When he does, he'll expose Jimmy's limitations even more than he has now and make Jimmy look like a backup. Right now Jimmy has an edge in knowing the playbook, but I'd say its his only edge and might not even mean that much, since physically he's limited with what he can do with it, and Kyle seems to have to "help him" with special play design. So in my mind the "writing is on the wall." Kyle and company must have concluded this weeks ago, and the clock is ticking louder and louder. In fact I think the alarm could go off soon depending on two things -- trading for a suitable QB2 (unless Rosen starts to prove himself) and arranging a deal to dispatch Jimmy to Houston, Indianapolis, or wherever. I'd bet money that the FO is working on this now and I wouldn't be surprised it it happened by the end of next week. The sooner, the better for everyone concerned.
ReplyDeleteI think that would shock players like, Trent Williams and George Kittle. It could happen but I'd be very surprised.
DeleteI think 85% is probably about right... right now. But if Lance shows consistently well at camp, day after day giving strong showings and improvement, those odds will decrease. And from what I have read the first three days have been strong showings from Lance.
ReplyDeleteAnother thing to keep an eye on is QB competitions and injuries elsewhere around the NFL. For instance, it loo,s like Wentz may be out long term. The Colts have a strong roster and won't want to lose the season due to an injury to Wentz. It is possible the 49ers find themselves in a position where they can get an over the odds offer for JG they just can't turn down if Lance is looking good.
1st round pick might get them to answer the phone. I really do believe Jimmy is going to get one last run at it, but we'll see how it plays out.
DeleteWelcome back to the 49ers, Jordan Matthews.

#49ers are signing TE Jordan Matthews, source says. The position switch for the former WR results in a roster spot for the Niners.
It's the evolved version of Jordan Mathews, as a TE. I love it! Good for him, and good for the Niners for giving him a shot. We'll see if he can do.
DeleteBTW, I'll take Trey Lance at +300 to be the opening day starter!
ReplyDeleteHigh roller baby!
DeleteSOME VERY GOOD NEWS FOR THE 9ERS 2021 SUCCESS
ReplyDelete* Good injury news for 49ers: Nick Bosa, Dee Ford, Jalen Hurd all active to start camp...
* The 49ers started training camp off with a bit of good news on the injury front. Defensive ends Nick Bosa and Dee Ford, and wide receiver Jalen Hurd all passed their physicals upon reporting for camp and will be active to start their preseason work.
Less good is Hurd missing days 3 and 4 of practice.
DeleteAs I posted earlier this month, barring injury, the 9ers will begin the season with JG as the starting QB.
ReplyDeleteWHY DO I SAY THAT? Why mistakes from Trey Lance don’t bother Kyle Shanahan!
As expected, Trey Lance’s first couple training camp practices haven’t been perfect. While reporters on site have had plenty of good things to say about Lance, the rookie growing pains have been evident as well.
TREY LANCE HE WILL SET AND LEARN TO START THE SEASON.
How long he sets and learns, will depend on how well JG does his job....
Jimmy's a good leader and Trey is a good learner. Worked out ok for the Chiefs.
DeleteSounds like Lance just keeps stacking good days together. Yes, some rookie mistakes and moments, but man, everything I am reading suggests Lance is well ahead of schedule mentally and really looks the part physically.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, JG is stacking average to poor days.
This could be a competition sooner than many think.
