Signed, Sealed and Delivered

He's yours, Shanny. Trey Lance has signed his rookie deal and will be in house ready to compete against Jimmy Garoppolo throughout training camp. May the best man win!

4 years @ $34.1 million contract with a $22.2 million signing bonus. The $34.1 million is guaranteed, and the 49ers have the option to pick up a fifth-year option after Lance’s third season.

  2. BRUCE BUFFER - 7/28/21:

Ladies and gentlemen .... LIVE from The San Francisco 49ERS Headquarters & Practice Facility in Santa Clara California ....

    IIIIIIIIIIT's TIME!

... Introducing first, fighting out the Red Corner ... the challenger - standing 6'4" and weighing in at 230 lbs - the rookie QB with every single trait a team could possibly look for in a franchise QB ... fighting, out of North Dakota State - The challenger - The 'Prodigy' ... TREYYYY LANCE!

And now introducing the veteran ... standing 6'2.5" and weighing in at 225 lbs ... fighting out of the Gold Corner ... he's a handsome looking QB with a square jaw and a quick release ... fighting, out of Eastern Illinois ... the undisputed veteran QB of the 49ers ... Jimmyyyy "GQ" Garoppolo!

    2. I don't know about you, robber, but every time I hear Bruce Buffer say - IIIIIIIT'S TIME - before UFC fights, I get goosebumps. Every single time!

And without getting too far out ahead of ourselves after the first day of training camp, today's reports out of camp all seem to have one observation in common ... If improving their depth at the QB position was a main goal of this off-season, boy oh boy have they succeeded!

    3. Of course, Kyle made it clear that the goal for the QB position was much bigger than that. He told us at least 20 times that they needed to "find a 'STARTING' QB" with the 3rd overall pick.

I have no doubt about Trey Lance's ceiling. For me, it's not a matter of 'will he get there', it's only a matter of 'how quickly he'll get there'.

The biggest question for me is whether the competition with Trey Lance ultimately pushes Garoppolo to take his game to the next level. Can Jimmy be a more consistent QB while pushing the ball down-field with better results.

The first big tell for me is going to be whether or not Jimmy is still using that damn knee brace. That remains to be seen.

  3. Great signing. Good intro 49Reasons.
But I'll echo my previous sentiments - it's Garoppolo' job to lose.
This is a win/win situation for the 49ers. They have a healthy QB that helped get them to the Superbowl two years ago. And they also have their QBOTF.

    1. They find themselves in the same situation as the 2017 Chiefs.

    2. Wouldn't that be terrific!

It's only one day guys, but I can actually feel my frustrations with Jimmy G slowly, but surely, washing away!

I hope Jimmy is able to regain some of that 2017 magic of his. He's never going to be the QB I initially thought he would be, but that's no longer the measuring stick for me. Can Jimmy perform at a high enough level to run Kyle's entire playbook at a consistent level, and can he remain healthy enough to be counted on until the prodigy is ready take over, whenever that day comes?

It's been a long off-season guys, but it's finally time to play some football, and let all of these questions work themselves out. I will be more than happy to admit that I sold Jimmy G. short, if Jimmy does indeed prove me wrong!

      GO NINERS!

    3. Thanks AES, I couldn't be more hyped ups about my favorite team, my favorite sport, and my favorite hobby!

This sure has been an off-season to remember. As we all know, I nearly lost my mind along the way!

But now it's time to put the off-season behind me, and start looking forward, while enjoying the spectacle of recapturing the NFC West, and getting back to the Super Bowl!

  4. Trey Lance signing just before/ as camp started was always the expected outcome - in keeping with how the team has operated since Lynch and Shanahan took over.

The competition for the starting job will start as soon as Lance shows he is ready to compete. The great thing about having a vet like JG is there is no pressure on Lance to be ready to compete/ start immediately. If he is, great. If not, that is fine too.

    1. You betcha, Scooter. This whole QB thing just might work itself out after all, lol.

BTW, in case you were wondering, my story goes something like this - Somebody using my screen-name assumed my identity in the lead up to the NFL draft. Whoever it was portrayed me as a close-minded fan. I came across as irrational and unstable, and whoever it was, they sure made me look like a troll who simply had an axe to grind with Jimmy Garoppolo.

Thankfully, I think that person is long gone now. I've regained control of my alter ego who goes by the screen-name 49reasons!

      Hallelujah for that!

The #49ers are working out veteran FA Dre Kirkpatrick tomorrow, source said, as the former #Bengals and #AZCardinals starter looks to land. Kirkpatrick worked out for the #Patriots a few months back, as well.

  7. "Great double leg squat form for Nick Bosa. This (along with single leg squat) is one of the tests we use after ACL surgery to track recovery and predict future injury risk."

The knees dropping inward during a squat is predictive of both weakness & future re-injury."

  8. Crazy to think a decade after the league imposed a rookie salary cap, the total amount has barely gone up. Cam Newton, first rookie drafter under new system, signed a 4 year 22M deal...compare that to Trey who's 4 year 34M, and a 12M total increase in a decade is so small (and I know Cam was 1 vs Trey 3rd, but still). Crazy to think where the league would be had they not, as Bradford (the last #1 selected under the old model) had a 6 year 78M deal with 50 of it guaranteed...dude got basically same amount guaranteed as Cam and Lance's total combined.

  9. It looks like people are drifting back to the PD now that Jack Hammer has taken over. Razor: What's the plan for this blog?

    1. Plan's the same as it was when we started. We'll keep it up and going for everyone.

    2. Btw, do you think Jimmy will be with us to start the season? This might be a good topic, for example, what odds to you give that . . .

    3. Yes, just to back up what razor said, the intention is to continue with this blog. I will also comment on Jack's articles over at the PD, but I will be writing articles here and this is where I will primarily be commenting.
