What This Has to Do with the 49ers: This is probably just me reading too much into it, but it has been previously reported that the Panthers absolutely loved Mac Jones; if that is true, then the 49ers traded up to the third pick in order to make sure the Panthers had no chance of being able to trade up to get him.
What Does It Mean: Again, I may just be reading into things, but I believe this is a clear sign the 49ers are going to draft Mac Jones as the eventual replacement for Jimmy Garoppolo.
Credence is also lends to this theory because of the moves the 49ers made to upgrade their offensive line. Most draft pundits believe Jones needs a strong offensive line in order to succeed because of his lack of mobility, so it makes the resigning of Williams along with the addition of Alex Mack more understandable.
But what does everyone else think? Am I reading to much into the Panthers trading for Darnold, or do you agree with me? Let me know your thoughts down below.
Desperate times call for desperate measures. I think they were all in for, Watson but his legal issues made that less than elementary. As far as your theory goes, most unlikely but who knows? N O B O D Y.
ReplyDeleteI think the trade is a clear sign the Panthers felt the QB they wanted wasn't going to be available, and they were unable/ unwilling to trade up to secure their player.
ReplyDeleteI agree the 49ers trade up is related, in so far as the 49ers likely knew the Panthers (and probably others) were in the market for a QB and were potential competitors for moving up. So the 49ers jumped first to get their guy.
As to whether it definitely is Jones, I'm not so sure. Panthers have also been linked with Fields and Lance. I don't think we have any clearer picture today as to the QB the 49ers are taking than we had yesterday. Just that the Panthers don't believe a QB they want will be available.
It erases pretty much all doubt who the Jets are drafting.
ReplyDeleteI think one question you could ask yourself is, which quarterback would other teams like to see fall? The answer is simple, Justin FIelds.
DeleteJimmy a goner now for Bridgewater?
ReplyDeleteOne upside of the Darnold trade is that Jimmy's Trade compensation is going to be at least 2 early/mid-round draft picks. Some team is going to shell it out (and maybe something better) if their starter goes down either after training camp or mid-season.
ReplyDeleteGood on the Niners for waiting and not going with the Patriots offer (lowball, I'm sure).
Downside is that Wilson is now definitely gone, so IMHO it is either Trey Lance or Justin Fields. Personally, I think Lynch/Shanny will pass on MacJones because of his DUI, especially after the Foster experience.
