The Answer My Friend

Is twisting in the wind? Recent reports about the 49ers organization sniffing around potential qb replacements has stimulated the media's creativity. Can you smell what they've been cooking? From three-way trades to some of the most recent comments by, Shanny's former GM, Michael Lombardi and Boston Sports Journal's, Greg Bedard; Lombardi, "They are too active, too aggressive to run it back one more year with someone they don't have complete trust in". "Don't believe anything John Lynch says", Bedard boldly stated. "From what I gather from talking to people this week, over the past week, Jimmy Garoppolo still is far and away the Patriots Plan A, John Lynch has no power there. I guess he runs personnel, but it's Kyle Shanahan's show from top to bottom at that place. Shanahan plays things close to the vest, doesn't show his cards … he might even leave Lynch twisting in the wind."

Jimmy could be gone with the wind, or these blowhards could just be three sheets to the wind. I guess it all depends on which way the wind blows.

Could, Bill Belichick be headed down the same primrose qb path, Shanny got lost on for, Kirk Cousins? Scooter brought up an interesting trade proposal yesterday, "what do people think about JG for Stephon Gilmore and maybe a draft pick or two"?

  1. Another good post, Scooter.
With many voices speaking out re Garoppolo and the FO, it becomes clear that nothing is defined at this time.

That said, I'm of the opinion that Belicheck would not have interest in Garoppolo for a few reasons.
    a. He did not have a high view of Garoppolo, hence trading him to the 49ers.
    b. Belicheck is much to smart for him to take a player that has missed the amount of time that JG has in the last 4 years.
    c. I doubt that Belicheck views Jimmy as a long-term plan.

Maybe someone here could show the benefit of a Garoppolo, Belicheck reunion.

If you recall, at the time of the JG trade to SF, ESPN put out a story that claimed Patriots owner Robert Kraft demanded coach Bill Belichick trade quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. He was scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. JG and his agent, Don Yee, had repeatedly rejected Patriots offers to retain him on a four-year contract extension worth “in the $17 million to $18 million range annually,” reported ESPN’s Seth Wickersham. The Patriots sent Garoppolo to the 49ers because Belichick believed Garoppolo would thrive under 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan, according to the report.
What BB's opinion of JG is now, is unknown. But it's
possible he still believes JG can still be his best option at QB, at least for 2021?

    2. Thanks GEEP, for bringing that back to my recollection.
But, I wonder what Belicheck thinks of JG today. I don't see Belicheck giving Garoppolo the same value as he did 5 years ago, especially given the bad experiment with Cam last season.
Cam was able to stay on the field, but was mostly ineffective. Jimmy is a better passer, but he can't stay on the field. I doubt Belicheck is willing to take another gamble at QB.

    3. I can't take credit for this one, great work by razor!

As GEEP points out, JG wasn't traded by the Patriots because BB wanted to get rid of him. I think it makes a lot of sense that BB would want a JG reunion.

You have written another thought provoking article. But before contemplating trading JG for a CB, unless you believe the 9ers will draft and start a rookie QB in 2021, I'd want to know the name of the QB ShanaLych have a trade in place for. Or put another way, who can they trade for that's better (less risk), then JG?
the name of the QB the 9ers have a deal in place for a trade. U

    1. All razor's great work on this one, with a proposal I made yesterday at the end.

If they trade JG it will be with an eye toward the draft, and they would no doubt add one of the decent vet QBs as a mentor/ bridge.

    2. Sorry Razor, I need to give credit where credit is due!
I thought it was Scooter's article.
The Irony of this blog is, at least for me, we all left the PD blog believing we had lost something we all enjoyed! Turns out, we've found a better blog, with better articles, no Grant Cohn playing devils advocate and not one political comment@
      WELL DONE RAZOR, WELL DONE!

  3. Good work razor. I think it is clear the 49ers aren't fully invested in JG as their QB, but I also don't think they are desperate to move off him this offseason.

I think the Patriots seeing JG as Plan A makes a lot of sense for them. They are not in a position to confidently draft their QBOTF without trading up. They have heaps of cap space to take on his salary. And obviously JG knows the system. I could see the 49ers being willing to send JG back to the Patriots for the right price. And I think a trade that sends Gilmore the other way would make sense for the 49ers given the void they currently have at that position. Gilmore plus a draft pick or two for JG I think could be a win-win for both teams.

    1. I think you're right but for it to make sense the 49ers have to time it correctly.

    2. Yeah... the ideal scenario may seem it is a draft day trade after the 49ers draft the QB they want, but realistically I think the Patriots will want certainty of a JG acquisition well before then, as it would also impact on decisions in FA.

If they are going to make such a move they are probably going to need to do it in the next few weeks.

  4. Thanks, Scooter. Appreciate you holding off yesterday to let me segue off your trade proposal.

  5. If BB really wants JG then the best I can do for him is to send him JG, a third round pick this year and next year. We get the 15th overall pick this year. Take it or leave it.

    2. Yeah, take a lot of what is being said in the media with a grain of salt. Bedard sounds like he is just after some clicks. But the idea the Patriots would want JG does have the ring of some truth to it.

    4. Yeah, this is the week of pre-FA desperate-clutching-at-straws. There will be another one in the week before the draft.

It is remarkable to what extent ShanaLynch make their MO clear to anyone who care to listen and the extent that some in the media and some fans will go to purposefully ignore it.

ShanaLynch are pissed that two seasons were wasted due to injuries. Only 2017 was the throwaway rebuild year. They clearly have said that they will do whatever is needed to contend every year. They have publicly expressed their unhappiness with their cumulative W-L record. They are not going to replace Jimmy G with a rookie or a Teddy Bridgewater and watch another season go to waste.

The only exception to my mind is Watson and he's likely not going to be traded to the Niners, if at all traded.

Rather than coming up with complex multi-team trades to replace Jimmy G, the FO and coaching staff are likely busy getting ready for the most important draft of their regime, and on-boarding the new coaches. When I look at the state of the competing teams in the division and the conference, I feel that the Niners are in a good spot to take advantage of the COVID convulsions that have unsettled other franchises.

  7. Jack Hammer wrote today about Garoppolo/Bridgewater. Didn't predict it, just described the scenario:

    Carolina picks QB at 8.
We trade them 43 for Bridgewater.
We trade NE Garoppolo for 46.

    1. I'm surprised, Hammer thinks, Bridgewater is a viable replacement for, Jimmy. Former, Shanny GM, "49ers coach Kyle Shanahan was never a huge Bridgewater fan during his time in Cleveland when Bridgewater was available in the draft," explained Lombardi. "Shanahan is rather specific in what he wants for his offense from the quarterback position, and those qualifications don't fit with Bridgewater's game."

    2. Makes sense - Bridgewater really struggles to throw anything beyond 10 yards of the LOS.

  8. Salary Cap continues to increase 28+million.

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reports an even better figure for the 49ers, which offers more breathing room for a team that could lose several free agents but still hopes to find ways to improve. Breer is working with a more aggressive $183 million salary cap projection and has the 49ers sitting with $28.02 million in available money as of Sunday morning. It is unknown if that includes Friday's re-signings of tight end Ross Dwelley and safety Marcell Harris.
