I may be jumping the, Shark but the, Shark just might be jumping. Let's take a look at some slot cb's I like in the upcoming draft that could ease that transition:
Kary Vincent Jr., 5'-10" 185 lbs., LSU In 2019 he had 4 int's, broke up 9, with 47 tackles/2 for loss in 9 of 15 starts en route to a National Championship. Lead leg for the 4x100 relay championship teams at LSU. 2020 opt out
Size is average. Feet and hips are smooth. Acceleration with top end recovery speed. Change of direction is second nature. Makes plays on the ball at the catch point, and is an aggressive undercutter of routes. Has played FS as well as NB. As with a lot of these athletes, he can depend too much on his physical skill over technique causing him to play undisciplined and get grabby. Angles and instincts are hit and miss. Tackling and run support need work. Day 2 developmental player with a shot at becoming a starter.
Asante Samuel Jr., 5'-10" 184 lbs., FSU 3rd team All-ACC with 14 pbu's and 48 tackles, 1 int, 8 games played in 2020 ending in an opt out
Average size with strong looking lower body. Tight footwork with quick click and close. Feisty when crowding the receiver and fighting for space. Tackles the receiver down with little to no RAC. Butters his bread on the intermediate area routes and doesn't often let them cross his face. Can panic with his back to the ball. Prone to PI's by getting too handsy. Impatient hips in coverage and feet in tackling. Long speed questionable. Day 2 prospect.
Ambry Thomas, 6' 189 lbs. MI 3rd team All-Big Ten, MI Defensive Skill Player of the year, 38 tackles, 3 for loss, 4 pbu's, 3 int's and 2 fumble recoveries in 13 starts. 2020 opt out
Good size. Gets his head turned to locate the football consistently. Strength is recognition in zone coverages. Patient hips. Stays in position while tracking the football. Maintains balance in short area change of direction. Very good tackler. Can get a little touchy, feely. Inconsistency at high pointing 50/50 balls. Hips could stand to use a little oil in transition. Day 2 prospect.
Shakur Brown, 5'-10" 190 lbs. MI St. 1st team All-Big Ten, led FBS with .7 Int's per game. Had 5 Int's in 7 starts.
Average size, speed. Highly instinctive ball hawk. Versatile. Strong. Smart. Plays taller on 50/50 balls. Disciplined. Not easily deceived. Plays like an alpha. Emotions and play style can lead to him getting into trouble, and durability concerns. Good balance and technique. Able to start, stop, change of direction in phase. Good wrap up tackler. Day 2 prospect.
Robert Rochell, 6' 195 lbs. Central Arkansas Played 7 out of a 9 game schedule missing 2 to injury, 27 tackles, 3 pbu's, Had a breakout junior season with 5 Int's 44 tackles 2.5 for loss and 13 pbu's earning him 2019 1st team All-Southland conference
Athletic specimen. Long and explosive. Ball hawk. Looks like a masterbater of the qb to undercut routes. Former wr. Fast with superior recovery speed. Outstanding leaping ability. Uses his length to stay off blocks and wrap up the ball carrier. Technique and transition to lateral and vertical routes need work. Will lose contain at times and awareness is questionable in trail. Day 2 prospect.
Resign FA CB K'Waun Williams, Ans With the additional $10-$12 million 9er cap space = Problem solved!
ReplyDeleteKW's last contract: https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/kwaun-williams-14831/
The Jets will make an offer he can't refuse. I think the 49ers can use, Moseley in the slot but I fully expect them to use a day 2 pick on the position for competition and depth. A player like, Shakur Brown who could start at NB but also has potential as your 2nd cb should be the type the 49ers target.

DeleteI don't doubt the Jets will, but I'd make them pay top dollar for him.
Williams will be 30 Y/O for 2021 season. Offer him a 3 year, $9 Mil deal, with an additional $1.5 Mil P/Y in incentives and let Paarag Marathe do his thing.
Nice work razor. I expect they will add a slot CB in the draft, but I think it will be day 3. As pre my previous article I think they will add a starting slot through FA. If Williams leaves there is the likes of Mike Hilton, Brian Poole, Desmond King, Buster Skrine, Nickell Robey-Coleman and Mackenzie Alexander available.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Scooter. You're probably right, especially with the extra cap space. Of those listed, I like King and Alexander the best.
DeleteI'd take Mike Hilton out of that group, followed by Poole. But King or Alexander would be just fine.

DeleteI'd agree with you on Steelers FA Mike Hilton being the best fit for the 9ers. My only concern with him is size and staying healthy! Also, his contract would cost the 9ers about the same as resigning K'Waun Williams ($4-$5Mil P/Y for a 4 year contract).
Razor, another great job. Thanks for the analysis. Perfect vehicle for you.
ReplyDeleteThanks, George.
DeleteSpeaking of the corner position in general, Jack Hammer in his SI article today ranks them as the number 1 position group need going into free agency. Not a surprise, but Jack's always well-reasoned, plus in this article he ranks all the position groups by need.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.si.com/nfl/49ers/news/ranking-the-san-francisco-49ers-offseason-needs
Yeah, it is clearly the #1 "need", from a lack of bodies perspective.
DeleteReuter has us taking, Tysen Campbell, CB, Georgia in round 2 and, Darren Hall, CB, San Diego St. in round 4.
DeleteIt wouldn't surprise me if they drafted a couple of CB's. Keep em coming Razor...
ReplyDeleteWill do, Under. Thanks.
DeleteThis position is vital. With WRs like Metcalf, Hopkins and Woods/Kupp twice a year we will need a top CB for coverage.
ReplyDeleteOne quality in a CB (imho) is height.
Surtain and Farley along with a few other top tier CBs check that box. But, drafting a CB in the 1st rd has not been in Lynch and Shanahan' draft playbook.
I haven't taken a close look at any FA's that can help in this area. But I’ll have a better view in a couple of months.
49ers are keeping some depth - Ross Dwelley and Marcell Harris have been re-signed.
ReplyDeleteAnd Mark Nzeocha's option has been declined, so he will become a FA. Frees up another $1.53M in cap space.
DeleteInteresting take from Todd McShay.
ReplyDelete“Later on in the round McShay has the San Francisco 49ers trading up to No. 9 to select Alabama quarterback Mac Jones. In that scenario the 49ers would send the 12th pick, the 43rd pick and a future first- or second-rounder to the Denver Broncos. This would ultimately all depend on whether the 49ers can find a quarterback elsewhere this offseason. If not, Jones could be a really nice fit in Kyle Shanahan's system.”
When did Mac Jones suddenly become so valuable as to demand this kind of draft capital?
It’s been the (speculative) view by many of us that Jones would be a mid-late 1st rd draft pick. What McShay is proposing is way over the top for me.
How do you guy’s feel?
He's not a guy I'd waste my 1st round pick on let alone a top 10. NFL Draft Odds has a prop wager with the bar set at pick 18.5.
DeleteAES "“Later on in the round McShay has San Francisco 49ers trading up to No. 9 to select Alabama QB Mac Jones."
Delete* Not going to happen AES! Razor is right, Jones will be drafted late Rd #1, or early Rd #2. McShay's is attempting to sensationalize the pick, to generate interest.
N. Dakota St. QB Trey Lance may be available at draft pick #12. If ShanaLynch believe he's the long term answer at QB the 9ers could draft him. IMO the 9ers will trade down for additional draft picks.
Geep,
DeleteI don’t see that happening either.
^ per NinerNation.
ReplyDeleteRazor,
ReplyDeleteIt’s just my personal opinion, but I believe that Mac Jones will be available at our #12 pick if they 49ers are interested in him. I don’t see them even considering what McShay proposed.
It'll come down to whether Shanahan falls in love with what he brings and his fear of missing out on it if he does.
DeleteAs to whether he'll be available at pick 12... a fair amount of chatter that he could end up top 10. How many teams will take a QB in the top 10, and how many will go before Jones?
