Starting OL in front of Purdy

Rookie Carver Willis will get the start at left guard for the 49ers tonight!
ReplyDeleteThe O line they are putting out there tonight does not bode well for Purdy or Black. My biggest hope tonight is BP makes it out alive.
ReplyDelete💀
Delete* Looking forward to watching the following players: Willis at L-OG, Black at RB, Marques Sigle at S, Halton at DT, Jaden Dugger at LB and Watkins at WR.
ReplyDeleteStribling is going to be a joy to watch.
ReplyDeleteCarver Willis turns his man for Black. He's taking ownership of LG right before our eyes.
ReplyDeletePut Stribling and Black in bubble wrap and open on Sept 1st. We have a couple of stars in the making.
ReplyDeleteCosell knows a guy whose been in the league 35 years and likes Stribling over Lemon.
DeleteAl Collins will not remain a starter if he keeps getting pushed around. When he was drafted he was supposed to be a run stuffer and occasionally rush the QB. He's been MIA on both counts so far.
ReplyDeleteWillis out and Pleasant in at LG. Colby still at RG.
ReplyDeleteWe look much stronger against the run in this game versus last game.
ReplyDeleteMuch better and the results thus far show it.
DeleteVery happy for Cowing. ST Plays will go a long way in settling the 6th WR position between Cowing/Pauling/Grimes.
ReplyDeleteI think Wallow and Cowing have cemented their spots on the 53 tonight
ReplyDeleteAgree on Cowing Coach.... I think Fred, Dre, Bethune, Gifford, Dugger, and Martin get the nod.
DeleteWallow gets a wink-wink Vet PS Squad deal. If you remember last year, Wallow joined us mid-year and not many teams wanted him.
I think Carver Willis just won the LG job.
ReplyDeleteOther than the 2 missed TD catches, the 1st half looked good.
ReplyDeletecornerback Renardo Green suffered a hamstring injury on a deep ball that knocked him out of the contest.
ReplyDeleteI like Jakob Robinson.
ReplyDeleteThe Kid has sound Technique! Definite PS candidate.
RB Sincere McCormick looked like he could make the 53, and could get a
ReplyDeletechance to show the Raider they made a mistake cutting him.
Looks healthy.
DeleteCruz is a much better run blocker than pass blocker. I think he gets stashed away on PS.
ReplyDeleteI thought he was a 2 year project. Looks like he might be a 3 year.
DeleteYeah won't be surprised if Cruz gets a mysterious injury in these next few days and goes on IR. ;)
DeleteNormally 5th round picks don't get cut...and if they do, some team will scoop him up.
Special Teams Killing it... can't believe my eyes. Usually we are the one's who make our share of bone headed mistakes. Nice to see the reversal.
ReplyDeletePinero has been so perfect! Glad to have him.
MUG
DeleteHiring Brant Boyer as the 9er ST coordinator was, IMO, a steal
I doubt that the 49ers will have the patience to wait for him to develop for 3 years. Three years means 3 draft. The 49ers will likely find some good talent for the oline on those drafts.
ReplyDeleteStroman can't have that kind of brain fart.
ReplyDeletePretty good performance all things considered. The bad news is they lost 4 more players this week 3 to soft tissue injuries.
ReplyDeleteMac Jones looked like Mac Jones of two years ago. Still the scheme on both sides of the ball is pretty vanilla. Defense played the run well last Nite I hope it continues through the whole season.
ReplyDeleteMcCormick looks like he wants to stay on the team. That name reminds me of Mike McCormick on the SF Giants in the 1960's.
ReplyDeleteUC,
DeleteMcCormick is a nice throwback name. The 1st SFG pitcher to win a Cy Young.
I like Nick Martin. But, I'd prefer to see Bethune get the lions share of snaps. From what I've seen, Bethune seems to be more extinctive at quickly reading a play than Martin.
ReplyDeleteI think I am in the minority here but I can't see how they can keep Wallow of the field if he continues to play at the level he played last night. I know he is not the sexy pick but I do think he is far more advanced than either Martin or Duggars. He kind of reminds me of Chris Borland he is just a play making machine.
DeleteThe problem with Wallow is he can't cover.
DeleteKyle Posey today:
DeleteGarret Wallow
Wallow had three of the eight missed tackles on defense. He also allowed all five of his completions to be completed for 44 yards, including a long of 18 and an additional 17 after the catch. His role is far from easy, but we’re also seeing why he’s been a lifetime special-teamer.
Football is fluid. Wallow opened the door for some of the linebackers to make the roster.
Lots of good in this game, though the scoreline flatters the 49ers. Had some issues moving the ball consistently first half, and penalties helped out the defense a lot.
ReplyDeleteA lot of the young guys look like keepers which is really promising. But I am getting worried about guts like Collins and Martin, both whom seem to be struggling. Atm I would have them on the bubble, but draft pick status might save them.
LG is still a huge concern to me. I know razor loves Willis, but those are some rose coloured glasses if you think he looked like a starter. They didn't address the OG position with any real intent this offseason, so just have to hope someone on this roster can rise to the occasion. Atm not looking great.
1+
ReplyDeleteCarver Willis is an ascending player just like Puni was. He improved in this game from last. Remember, he's 2 weeks behind from the concussion. I believe he has the inside track to win the job. Go Carver Go!
ReplyDeleteHow 2 different sports writers graded Carver Willis, They had polar opposite views on his performance against the Chargers.
ReplyDelete* Kyle Posey, from Niner Nation: "More questions than answers at L-OG. then posted, "Carver Willis was the highest-graded lineman with an 84.4 grade. He had a 90.1 run blocking grade, but a 55.5 pass blocking grade. Somehow, that averages out to 84.4. Willis allowed three pressures on 23 pass blocking snaps."
* David Bonilla FROM 49ERSWEBZONE: "The 49ers' lowest-graded offensive lineman was rookie Carver Willis, who allowed two pressures and two hurries on 24 pass-blocking snaps out of 42 total snaps at left guard. That's a notable turnaround from last week's game against the Tennessee Titans, when Willis was the 49ers' highest-graded player. Against the Chargers, he earned a 41.1 run-blocking grade and a 44.4 pass-blocking grade."
I'll go with Jonny Dell's assessment of Willis. He's been in his corner almost as long as I have.

DeleteIf I had to commit to one player at L-OG, it would be Willis.
But it would be contingent on continuing to improve his Pass blocking. IMO, his technique is sound but needs to spend time working with assistant strength coaches, Segrove, or Nieuwsma, (to add upper body strength) and assistant O-Line coach Sapolu.(Improve hand placement).
I'm curious what you see?
I see an elite run blocker who is 2 weeks behind from the concussion taking advantage of his opportunity to win the job. Chris Foerster followed him around at WA practices for a reason. He'll continue to improve throughout the year and we've yet to see him play next to Trent Williams.
DeleteThe Chargers Interior OLINE is the worst unit in the league.
ReplyDeleteI am rooting for Willis. I can't tell if he is effective or not from watching a TV broadcast and as to all of these "grades" I really think they are very subjective. I do think his pass blocking will automatically improve when he plays next to Williams. He looks like a strong project but still a project. I agree with Scooter they should have drafted an OG much sooner in the draft.
ReplyDeleteThe highest they've ever drafted an OG is Banks round 2 and he didn't start until the following year. As long as this regime is running the show they aren't ever going to draft an OG early enough for you OldCoach.😂
ReplyDeleteI would have been happy with another 2nd round OG pick this year. I was hoping they would give Willis a year in an NFL weight room as well as a year backing Brendel at C so he could step in at C in 27 but right now he looks like the best option at LG
DeleteBrad and Dieter both said Pleasants should start at LG. That will never happen. He'll be lucky to make the roster and the only way he does is if he can show he can play inside too. He was terrible. If Lowe is healthy, I don't expect Pleasants to make the cut.
ReplyDeleteIt's a real shame Toth has been out injured. An extra guy competing to start couldn't hurt.
DeleteThe best Olinemen in the Shanahan, Lynch era have come through FA. Trent Williams, Laken Tomlinson, and Alex Mack. They could follow that same pattern going forward If the Oline faulters leading up to the trade deadline. Hopefully, the young Oline players quickly assimulate.
ReplyDeleteWhoever wins the LG battle should automatically get a boost when Trent is playing beside them. Both Tomlison and Banks were solid playing next to TW and really haven't shown much since they left. I think it's great all the guys are getting a lot of game snaps this preseason. I hope Willis can continue to develop and follow a similar path as Puni and Mckivitz as mid round draft picks and become a good solid O Lineman.
ReplyDeleteLong time no read.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back Rib.
