Safety Net

57 comments:

  1. Interesting info.
Especially with EMW. He was predominantly used as a box safety but has very good coverage numbers.
With Theinaman he's very balanced with the exception of qbr allowed. Based purely on numbers as I haven't watched them I'd prefer Theinaman.
This is based on his primarily being a free safety vs a box safety and his level of competition.

    1. I think Morris is gonna want a FS similar to Bates.

    2. I'm on the Thieneman train. Big fan of his game. I'd be more than happy getting him at 27.

      Delete
    3. He'd likely represent one of the positions where he'd be BPA.

  2. Big news in the NFC West with the expectation of the Rams acquiring CB Trent McDuffie from Kansas City for the No. 29 pick in the draft. Not sure I'd ever negotiate a deal with KC after the Dee Ford debacle.

    1. Wow! What a haul for the Chiefs. 4 draft picks for a Corner.

I think Kansas City will now use their own top 10 pick on Tackle and then use the Rams' pick on either WR or CB.

      Delete
    2. Mug, the Rams have struggled to draft and develop CB's for years. KC? Not so much....

      Delete
    3. Yeah Rams suck at drafting DBs/LBs that is why they trade for blue chip star DBs like Jalen Ramsey and now McDuffie.

But you gotta say, Rams are great at maximizing their resources.... They are good at drafting No 1 WRs and weapons at RB and also finding Good D-Linemen.

We are the opposite....we are an LB factory, but suck at drafting quality D-lineman and RBs. I guess both us and Rams are good at certain things and abysmal at others.

    4. I don't think we've ever needed a "blue chip" at CB to be successful.

  3. The more tape I watch the more I'm convinced taking Cooper over Boston would be a big mistake. Hope somehow, some way he's still on the board at 27.

    1. I hope they go a different position, but my guess right now is they draft for need.

      Delete
    2. Two immediate needs. WR and LG. Wouldn't be a big surprise to see them address both early

      Delete
    3. I really wish they'd stop doing that approach early

      Delete
    4. They might but until I see it with my own eyes. My expectation is they sign a WR and a budget LG and then draft each on day 1 and day 2.

      Delete
    5. I expect that as well. And then I expect to see the two vets they signed win the starting jobs.

They haven't had a lot of success when pushing a need rather than just taking BPA.

      Delete
    6. What position(s) at 27 do you predict will have the best chance of being the BPA?

      Delete
    7. Safety and LB, then CB, edge, WR, OL.

      Delete
    8. Yep, S and LB is my guess too.

I'm with you on cooper...He's a Round 2 draft prospect, rather than a Rd #1 prospect. He had a limited, primarily slot-based role in 2025, a lack of elite top-end speed, and a limited catch radius.
He's a productive, technically sound player with good YAC ability, but an inability to consistently stack defenders and his below-average blocking are, IMO, limiting factors for a first Rd draft selection.

      Delete
    10. I think there are only 4 WRs that are legit round 1 guys (maybe 3, now that Lemon looks like he's a bit of a mental case). After that, I think guys like Concepcion and Cooper are chances to go in the first round, but will (imo) be a little over-drafted there.

      Delete
    11. Scooter, I think that's true with ever position in this draft. Not a very good class. This might be the draft where the 49ers strategy is a match. Likely not as big a deal to reach for need and why I think your expectation of targeting blue chip or elite players could be challenging.

      Delete
    12. Yeah, it's why I'm fine drafting a non-premium position round 1.

Also, when I say they need to add blue chip guys, (a) I'm not just referring to the draft, (b) I acknowledge getting such players in the draft will likely only happen by getting lucky and finding guys that outplay their scouting report (or, as I outlined above, is a guy that's available due to position value).

      Delete
    13. Yep, lucky Lynch needs to roll a 7 or 11 on at least 3 of these picks.

  4. If the TW situation becomes sticky. There's a chance that the 49ers draft OL at 27 thereby making WR inconsequential. There are viable WRs into the 3rd rd. If Trent walks there could money to sign a high profile Egde FA.
Things will get serious real soon.

    1. Trent Williams isn't going anywhere. He won't play for anybody but the Shanahan's and Foerster.

      Delete
    2. The crushing loss against Seattle might make him look elsewhere that gives him a better chance to eventually win a long awaited SB. I don't want to see Trent go anywhere. But I also believe that at this point in his illustrious career he'd love a SB ring before hanging them up.

      Delete
    3. After listening to his interview, I'm convinced he's going to retire a 49er.

      Delete
    4. That's what I'm hoping for as well. But, there could be a team with a better chance at knocking off Seattle than the 49ers. Loyalty over a chance to win a SB ring might be a tough call.

      Delete
    5. He just had a chance, and he'll get at least two a year. If you listened to his interview that his best chance for a SB is right where he is!

      Delete
    6. So, do you believe that keeping TW is basically a done deal and any talk of him walking is just smoke?

      Delete
    7. Yep, just smoke on the water.

RE TW: I agree with Razor, he's not going anywhere! The only exception I can think of is, if TW and the 9ers can't come to an agreement by 03/11/2026 on the cap hit and guaranteed money, and a $10 million option bonus is due on 04/01/2026. The Yorks could decide, after Aiyuk, Deebo and TW's they're tired of all o the drama and decide to bite the bullet, despite all the resulting problems?
Do I think that will happen? NO! But it is possible!

  11. As much as I'm against the 9ers trading Mac, I can see the 9ers trading him to the Vikings, for EDGE Greenard plus a 3rd Rd draft pick....TBD?

    2. Mariota is out there and much better than Jones. I also can see FA LB Kaden Elliss from Atlanta, played under Morris his last two years signing with the team.

      Delete
    3. Under
      2 reasons I disagree:
      1) yes, Mariota is considered a better QB than Mac Jones and why he was paid $8 Mil for 2025, VS Mac's ~$4.2 Mil.
      2) The Vikings have QB J.J. McCarthy, who signed a 4-year, $21.85 million FULLY GUARANTEED rookie contract.
      3) While Both Mac and Mariota would like to sign as a starter, Mariota is a free agent, more likely to get that chance. He may not be interested in signing another one year contract as a backup QB. Mac is not a free agent, he has one year left on
      his contract with the 9ers.

    4. Looks like I can't count? Make that 3 reasons...lol

  12. Oregon OL Alex Harkey had a meeting with the 49ers at the NFL Combine, per Pete Nakos.

  13. If the 49ers are going to trade Jones I believe they have to do it before Mon. If they trade him after the free agent signing period there is a chance that all of the #2 QBs they might be interested in will be gone IE Mariota/Cousins. Earlier I thought for sure they would trade him but now I am leaning towards them holding on to him. If Kurtis Rourke seems to be as good as I think he can be I could see them trading Jones next season when a playoff level team loses their QB1 for the season. If that scenario happens I think they could get a 1st round draft pick for him.

    1. He's only signed for this year. If they don't trade him, it'll likely be a compensatory pick in the form of a 3rd Rounder in '28.

      Delete
    2. I can't imagine many teams would be willing to wait on making such a trade anyway. You either know you're going the draft route, or you want to get your starting QB sorted early in FA.

So we should know pretty early into FA whether Mac will be a 49ers this season or not.

Like I said, I'm not in favor of the 9ers trading Mac, but trading a backup QB for a top EDGE rusher, even after his down year due to a shoulder injury, is a steal. And IMO, fixes the 9ers #1 need.

  16. From Tony Pauline.

"I was told at the Combine the numbers for Vera-Tucker will be closer to $15 million/annually, the same amount projected for David Edwards of the @BuffaloBills & Ed Ingram of the @HoustonTexans. Zion Johnson of the @chargers leads the way at $17 million/annually".

OGs are getting paid these days. Didn't expect AVT to be getting interest at that sort of money though.

    2. Not wanting to beat a dead horse, but it's also why I think it's fine to pay a blue chip center over $20M a year. More valuable than an OG in this system.
