Do You Hear What I Hear

A score, a score, add in four more. With a win as big as can be! Giving up a 2 day rest differential, no George Kittle, no Fred Warner, no Trent Williams, no Nick Bosa, no Brandon Aiyuk. No problem. Brock Purdy is playing some of his best football and it couldn't have come at a better time. With a chance to lock up the number 1 seed throughout the playoffs against the Seahawks this Saturday evening, the 49ers will regroup, heal up and see who is available.

Defensively it was an atrocious performance, but they made the stop they needed to when they needed to do it. Saleh has no answers for 12 personnel. Pinnock is a liability in the run game and Gifford is a liability in the pass game. Back to the lab and figure it out.

This 3-game stretch for the 49ers is their highest 3-game point total since 1994. I will continue to enjoy this team for what they are and not focus on what they aren't, and what they are is an offensive juggernaut the likes of which we haven't seen for 30 years! My congratulations to the 49ers organization for a 12-win season. They could've very easily gone in the tank after Bosa and Warner went down and no one would have faulted them. Really proud of this team.

  1. It's been a heck of a season, that's for sure. And it definitely feels like right now this is the best 49ers offense since Steve Young was the QB.

I'm just enjoying the season no matter what happens from here - they've already exceeded my expectations, and by a long way.

  2. As bad as the 49ers defense is, imagine what Bears fans are thinking about their defense right now. They just watched their team put up 31 points on offense with 0 turnovers and get spotted 7 points at the very start of the game, but still got beat. Against a team missing their all pro TE and LT, and the #1 WR sitting out the season.

  3. I hear a lot of people talking about the loss of Bosa and Warner. I think people are under estimating the loss of Mykel Williams. Certainly his loss hasn't affected the team as much as Bosa and Warner but the run D went to hell. I can't remember the exact numbers but the yards per carry before Williams went out versus the yards per carry after his injury was very big. Also the loss of Renardo Green the last 2 games has hurt the pass defense. I think the 49ers chances of getting to the SB are 70% better if they get that first round bye. The extra week of rest will really help T. Williams, CMC, Pearsall, Kittle and Green.

  6. I love this offense—Brock Purdy is an outstanding QB and playing at an elite level. In my opinion, he’s the best Niner quarterback since Montana. For the first pick in the draft, forget the wide receiver; it has to be a pass rusher. Trade Jones and use that capital to land one. Then, sign Mariota for two years—he’s better than both Jones and Darnold.

    4. Steve Young was never revered as was Montana and he knew that. Nor, did he ever asked to be in Montana's u-verse. What Steve Young did do was win the 49ers last Superbowl and he gets my highest respect for that.

    6. Young imo is the most talented 49ers QB I have watched - in terms of combination of physical and football IQ skills to play QB.

However, Montana (and I think Brock) had more of that inner willpower and belief to make plays at key moments.

There is absolutely no expectations and I think that is a major reason why we are on a 6-game streak!

Brock is playing with no pressure on him and he is dealing....I hope that continues on Saturday against the 'Hawks who he has owned in his short career.

  19. I'll probably get laughed at here, but the Seahawks are imo the 49ers worst matchup. Mike McDonald vs Purdy scares me ever since 2023. They are also good against the run, and it's the one team we don't have a STs advantage against.

It's a strength vs strength matchup, which often means the game will be decided by weakness vs weakness. And I think the Seahawks weakness (offense) is currently better than our weakness (defense).

    2. I think you are spot on, Scooter. Niners D has to take away JSN like the Colts did. That probably means the Seahawks will put up significantly fewer points than in games where JSN ran wild. If they can do that, I like our chances a lot.

    1. If you want a positive, how about this - the Bears have one of the best offenses in the NFL (3rd most yards, 10th most points) and the 49ers defense held them to 31 points.

Only two teams in the NFC playoffs (aside from the 49ers) average more points per game - the Rams and Seahawks - so good chance we'll get at least one playoff matchup that isn't as rough on the defense.

Another positive - while the defense gives up a lot of yards, they don't give up a lot of points that often. 13th in terms of fewest points allowed per game.

“He sees the defense as he’s dropping back and immediately knows where to go with the football. It’s just innate. He’s a master at that. These are the details, nuances, and subtleties of the position that are very, very hard. And one reason he was the last pick in the draft is because the college game guys are so different that you don’t have to do this in college. So people didn’t know he had this innate trait. And it’s really high high level. It’s quarterbacking at a high level.”

    3. Yes, they need to add pass rushers, no question.

My point was more that if you only look for superstar calibre plays/ players you'll miss out on a lot of good ones. Bailey was good today, backing up the talk he will be a first round pick. He's not perfect, but he's got talent worthy of a high pick.

      Delete
    4. Bailey will likely be off the table when the 49ers pick next April. Hopefully, the 49ers resign Sam O, along with finding a gem Edge in the draft as well. I said after Bosa and then Warner went down that the offense would need to score between 24-30 pts per game. They have done that. But, at some point in the playoffs the D will need to put some good pressure on opposing QBs. They will need to do this against Darnold on Saturday for starters.

      Delete
    5. Yep, agree with all of that. My point still stands though - if what Bailey did today was underwhelming to you, 49ers are going to be hard pressed finding someone that excites you when they pick.

    8. I'd be shocked if Becker declared though. Only became a starter midway through the year. Would definitely benefit from staying another year at least.

    9. I was thinking along the lines that with Mendoza gone after this post season that Becker could be tempted to declare. But sticking around for another year could be a good decision with Sarratt heading to the NFL. In any case, I've become a fan of Becker and will keep an eye on what he does going forward.

  58. CMC:

    - Needs 5 receptions to pass LaDainian Tomlinson for the third most catches by an RB in NFL history (LT at 624).

    - Need 4 receptions to reach 100 for the season and become the first Niner since TO in 2002 to hit century mark.

  59. CMC leads the NFL with 91 missed tackles forced on runs and ranks 7th with 21 missed tackles forced (MTF) on receptions, per NextGenStats.

    1. Crazy to think he has so many missed tackles forced yet is averaging under 4 ypc. What's even crazier is despite those MTFs, CMC ranks near the bottom in yards after contact.

  60. R Mason Thomas looks like an interesting edge prospect in that 25-50 range. A little on the smaller side, but very quick and can still pack a punch for his size.

  61. Kurtenbach has it 27-23 Niners this morning. That seems about right. Go Niners.

    1. Huge if he is actually ready to play as soon as next week. But I'd hate for him to rush back too early and reinjure the leg.

    1. If it is raining steady at game time, I say keep Jones loose.
