But #10 isn't one of them. He's shown he's a starting quarterback in the league. Will his agent allow him to play for $4M next year? Should the 49ers trade him if a team is willing to give up a 2nd round pick? Looking at Purdy's contract there is an out in year 3. If it were me I would not trade Jones for anything less than a 1st round pick.
The 49ers blitzed Matthew Stafford on 54.1% of his dropbacks yesterday. That was the highest blitz rate in a game for SF in over nine years (Week 3 of 2016 season).

Unless a team with an early 2nd would include multiple other picks IE a 2nd this year as well as a 2nd next year along with a 4th and a 5th this year. I am a huge fan of Kurtis Rourke. I wonder if they will open his practice window this year. I wonder if BP has any trade value, taking into consideration his contract and whether or not his turf toe could be chronic

Can lightning strike again with the 2026 draft? I believe that the 49ers are in need of at least 2 eventual starting Olinemen next season. Eventual for me means young players that would be ready to transition when TW and maybe Brendal step down. Puni, Colby, and Burford could be the foundation to build on beginning next season.
I would focus on the area of greatest need and it’s not the OL. Our weakest area is defense. Keep drafting on the DL.
DeleteThat's more likely than fans want to believe. If the top tackles go early there are a few edges that could fall. I would prefer a DT between DT and edge but the edge class is better.
DeleteMac has shown just how important it is to have a competent back-up QB, much like Purdy himself did in 2022. I've already said previously I wouldn't trade him next offseason unless they received an unbelievable offer. For mine, it would take more than a first to make me really want to do it, but I think I could probably be talked into a first. But not interested in anything less than that.
ReplyDeleteHowever... this is all contingent on Mac and his agent not agitating for a trade and/ or big pay rise this offseason and becoming a problem. If he does that it might become untenable to keep him, so I'd definitely be willing to trade him for a first in that case. Basically, keep an open dialogue with him, see where he's at early in the new year, and if he really wants to get paid/ be a starter then it would behoove the team to try and help accommodate that.
FWIW though, I think Mac is really happy at the 49ers, so he might be content staying another year for a modest raise.
He's with Condon and CAA and they've gotten a bit of a reputation for agitation.
DeleteMy take is, depending on your order in the draft, you spend at least a number one pick on someone out of college. Imo Mac equates to a franchise qb, so I think he's worth a lot more. Would Lynch get that? God knows.
ReplyDeleteThere's also the issue about Brock's availability versus his compensation. Is Mac as good as a healthy Brock? Maybe not, but maybe yes, because Mac is playing injured too. I love Brock but I'm getting to love Mac too. Bottom line: It's a business.
Purdy has elite reationary quickness and he's a better anticipatory thrower, plus he's already proven in the playoffs. That decision has already been made imho.

Believe me, a turf-toe injury doesn't just disappear even with plenty of rest. And any athlete that has experienced this injury will attest to that. But, I'll let next year worry about that for now. Hopefully, Purdy can come back stronger and stay healthy.

Missed tackles was a huge problem in this game. Was that poor play on our part or superior plays on the Rams? Depends on the play but probably both.

I've watched great defenses like the Rams "fearsome foursome" Vikings "purple people eaters" Dolphins "killer bees" Bears "monsters of the midway" Steelers "the steel curtain" among other great defenses. The 49ers won a SB when they brought in Fred Dean. A very good pass-rush can create stars in the secondary.

Like the week 8 loss to Houston, the 9ers used the blitz to try to get pressure on the QB.. Saleh called for a blitz on 20 of Stafford’s 37 dropbacks, or 54.1% Stafford completed 14 of 20 attempts for 190 yards, 2 TD's and a 133.3 passer rating when blitzed.
The defense is pretty much at the bottom of the barrel, the only direction left is upwards.

ReplyDeleteThe 9er coaches job now is, keep the players motivated to continue improving, focus on winning 4 more game to make the playoffs, figuring out who they'll want to keep next year, and the positions that they'll need to address in the 2026 draft.
That was the plan that JL said the 9ers would follow....
I think we should expect the defense to be very up and down the rest of the year. Too many injuries to key players to be consistently good, but an excellent coach that if the players turn up to play can make them competitive.

There is great OL value between 16-32 in rd one. But, as has been mentioned before, the 49ers typically don't draft OL in rd one. Edge, LB, and another RB/FB type may also need attention in 2026. This will become much clearer as the season progresses.

I hope he doesn't think like a $50M QB and feel the need to carry the Offense on his shoulders, but rather goes back to being the guy who maximizes KS's offense and still plays with a chip on his shoulder with the chip being "system qb".
Defense wins championships and the Niners currently don't have much of one. In rare cases sometimes the best defense is a juggernaut offense. The Niners don't have that either. The one thing about getting into the playoffs, one never knows for sure what's going to happen, sometimes the best team doesn't win. Play the youngsters get them the experience.

ReplyDeleteAt some point the 49ers will need to replace Juice at RB. Juice was a college TE turned RB. Jaren Kanak TE, Oklahoma at 6'2" 235 and a 4.45 40 has similar measurements as Juic, e and because he may be to short for an NFL TE, can make a seamless conversion to RB/FB.

DeleteI think Juice is having a much better year this year than last. If they bring him back I don't think they will use a pick for his back up. I bet they will try and replace him with a UDFA that they can store on the PS. If the 49ers were to draft him they would likely have to pick him before the 5th round as the only pick they have after the 4th is a 7th and they will probably lose that one because Keion White will meet and surpass the games played stipulation

* LB's Baron Browning and Mack Wilson Sr., CB Will Johnson and S Dadrion Taylor-Demerson are also out with injuries.
* AZ QB Kyler Murray has been replaced by QB Jacoby Brissett, a traditional, stationary pocket passer. This forces the AZ offense to shift from a run-heavy, shotgun-based scheme to a conventional, play-action oriented attack.

WEAKNESSES:
* The AZ offense, with both their QB and RB injuries, has struggled to consistently move the ball and consistently lacking big plays.
* The AZ secondary is a weakness. They have difficulty stopping the opposing teams pass attacks, due to injured LB's, CB and S.
THE 9ERS STRENGTHS:
The 9er offense is as healthy as it has been all year, returning 2 key players, QB BP and WR Pearsall. WR Aiyuk will remains on the physically-unable-to-perform list, the rest of the 9er offense appears to be in good shape for the stretch.
* The 9ers averaged 22.0 ppg in their first 10 games, and something they must improve on, over the final 7 games of the season if they're
going to make the playoffs.
* Here are 5 9er players who must improve for the 9ers to rebound from last week’s loss to the Rams.
* OG Puni was an All-Rookie selection last year. He'll face a tough assignment Sunday, as he goes up against AZ DT Campbell.
* DE Sam Okuayinonu has turned into a valuable performer for the 9er pass rush, and he's improved as a run defender, too. He had a career-high 7 tackles in the 49ers’ Week 3 game against AZ.
Okuayinonu is 2nd on the 9ers (behind Huff) with 2 sacks. The 9er D
will need a big game from him against AZ.
* Rickey Pearsall was a top NFL WR after 4 games, due to his knee injury. In those 4 games, Pearsall hae 20 receptions for 327 yards.
The 9es need him to continue playing at that level against AZ.
* S Malik Mustapha: TE Trey McBride, is AZ’s top threat and QB Brissett will feed him the ball as much as possible. Mustapha will play a key role whether he's attacking the line of scrimmage, to stop the run, or defending the middle of the field against McBride, who leads AZ with 61 catches for 603 yards and 6 TD's.
* BP returns after being sidelined for 8 of the 9ers 10 games with turf
toe. The 9ers will need him to play like a $265 million QB and earn his money! The 9ers’ offense will need to score more points to cover up for the loss of its star players.
Martinez cut from the 53 with BP returning to action - should hopefully be fine getting him back to the PS but always sucks exposing guys to the waiver wire (e.g. Drew Moss).
