    1. In fact he did them a favor by violating his contract. The 49ers can now recover a significant portion of his contract. Close to $25M or thereabouts.

    2. Considering the circumstances....the best outcome for the team and the player. We get out of an albatross of a contract and Aiyuk gets some guaranteed money for his injury and putting his body on the line.

If only we had traded him to Pittsburgh. Oh Well! I hope he finds what he is looking for next.

    3. After the negotiations it seemed as though he wasn't viewed as a Niner.

    4. They were about to trade him to Pittsburgh when he came into Kyle’s office and said he’d sign. Kyle says he rushed upstairs to stop the trade. He wanted to keep Aiyuk, but Aiyuk had his money and decided to be a prima Donna.

    5. That's a huge favour he's doing the 49ers. Highly unlikely he'll ever be the player was, now the 49ers are able to get out of his contract with minimal cap impact.

      Delete
    6. @Scooter: If you don't mind, can you calculate what the impact on the cap will be. I'm asking because I think you already have a spreadsheet that you can just tweak. But if it's a lot of work, then forget it. Thanks.

    7. 49ers are now free to clear up about $85 million of salary-cap space owed to Brandon Aiyuk. The voiding of that huge fully guaranteed 2026 chunk ($27m) allows for a cut that'd take this amount of annual pay off the books...

      2026: $27 million
      2027: $28 million
      2028: $30 million

Christmas came early for San Francisco!

    8. Razor,

Only thing we have to see is if Aiyuk does not change his mind again..... ie he does not fight the move trough NFLPA again.

If he stays true to character, he will probably change his mind between now and end of season. Lol!

      Delete
    9. With 2026 $27m voided, the accelerations onto the 49ers' books if Brandon Aiyuk is cut would be from the 2024 signing bonus proration ($13.8m) and 2025 option proration ($18.2m).

So $32 million — all money the 49ers have already paid Aiyuk and is going to hit the salary cap regardless at some point.

Cutting Aiyuk outright would cost the 49ers $16.6 million in additional 2026 cap room – they can wait until after June 1 to push some of that load back to 2027

MUGEEK9er: I gotta believe his decision to not fight the 49ers is related to his unconditional release.

    10. Lombardi with some good financial analysis on Twitter/X:

By this season's end, the 49ers will have paid Brandon Aiyuk $48.9 million over 2024 and 2025 on the big contract.

So if they do cut Aiyuk, it'll end up being a 2-year deal at $24.5m APY — but with only 7 games played, 25 catches and 0 TD.

A deal that the 49ers quickly regretted, but also one they can now cleanly exit

    11. Niners got a get out of contract hell card.

    12. Matt Maiocco is reporting that they voided his contract during training camp which is a surprise. It’s confusing to me because if he hasn’t been fulling his contract and the contract was voided, then why is he still under contract for the reman of this year.

      Delete
    13. Felix, still under contract for this year. Contract will void upon his release sometime in March likely.

  2. I always liked Aiyuk and he has been an active contributor for the 49ers until the last season and AWOL this year. I could live with him making a concerted effort in working to get back on the field. But, if he's no longer interested in being with the 49ers, then A-Dios, amigo!

  3. Bears have given up 26 UNBLOCKED pressures with Williams not taking a sack. Their offense is humming and will be a challenge for this defense.

  4. In addition to celebrating getting out of Aiyuk's contract, I think we should start preparing for the 49ers to draft another WR high.

    1. Not too high I hope. This will also change things for JJ.

      * WR Jordyn Tyson, Arizona St. Likely a top 10 draft pick. Gone B-4 the 9ers get a chance to draft him unless they trade up.
      * WR Carnell Tate, Ohio St. Likely a top 15 draft pick, Gone B-4 the 9ers get a chance to draft him unless they trade up.

      * WR Makai Lemon, USC: Fits 9ers ZBS, a slot WR with good speed and ability to separate against both man and zone
      * WR KC Concepcion from Texas A&M: Fits 9ers ZBS. A slot WR who can separate against both man and zone. Both Lemon and Concepcion are adequate at blocking, but both may
have trouble getting off the LOS against physical DB's.

  5. This is exactly the right approach for the WR position. Treat it like RB where you don't negotiate a 2nd contract and instead recycle the position through the draft.

    1. It's definitely getting that way. Not many WRs see the end of their second contract these days.

    2. W the top-heavy contracts and the nature of the sport, it really does beg a Moneyball approach w keeping/accumulating draft picks and keeping the team young....... fans are emotional, but winning solves that- check what OKC has done and where they're going to be, for a few years- not embracing tanking, but you can spin trades to replenish, a la A's.

  6. For me this is the best news this season. Hope they use the new found cash wisely. He screwed the Niners and us fans, which was a big surprise because he seemed like such a team player. Can’t stand the guy. But it’s really good news.

  11. So somebody (Scooter) give me some hard numbers on how this will effect the cap next year. From what I have heard/read the 49ers will go into next year with 45 to 50 mill in cap space before releasing Aiyuk. Again from what I have heard/read they are not paying Purdy too much of his contract next year. How much does releasing Aiyuk add to the 49ers 2026 cap room? Do they have the space to be semi active in the FA market next year?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It means Aiyuk's cap hit will jump from around $15M in 2026 to around $30M in 2026, unless they designate him a post June 1 cut. But, in reality it takes around $27M off the 49ers overall cap obligations over the next few years.

They can restructure other contracts to get the $15M in cap space in 2026 back if want to.

So short answer is it means little for 2026 cap space and overall reduces their cap obligations so have more money to spend.

      Delete
  12. Sounds like the 49ers can't go on a shopping spree post Aiyuk, but they can potentially target 1-2 players in FA.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah, they weren't ever likely to go on a big FA splurge. They still have a lot of $ dedicated to their star players. But if they want to add one or two top line FAs then getting rid of Aiyuk's 2026 salary will help significantly in doing so.

  13. Scooter
After voiding the guaranteed money in Aiyuk's 2026 contract and his
decision to not file a grievance with the NFL players association....
Can the 9ers trade Aiyuk to another team, once cleared off pup by the medical team, or after June 1st 2026?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They can trade him, but the same issues with trading him persist as when it was a guaranteed option bonus (just because it is no longer guaranteed doesn't mean it no longer exists). Highly unlikely a team will want to pick up Aiyuk's contract before the option bonus is due on April 1, and 49ers still need to trade him before April 1 or they will still owe him that option bonus.

You also can't designate trades as post June 1 to push cap hits back. They happen when they happen. And for the 49ers, that needs to be before the option bonus is due.

      Delete

  14. -If Aiyuk is released without a post-June 1 designation, 2026 dead-cap hit is about $29M
-If Aiyuk is released WITH a post-June 1 designation, dead-cap hit is about $8M in 2026 and $21M in 2027

  15. One thing this Aiyuk saga has demonstrated (again) is that Kyle's involvement in personnel decisions is too great, especially when it comes to offensive players.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He was the one that nixed the trade to the Steelers at the last second before they extended him, after Lynch had ironed out all the trade details.

      Delete
    2. They offered him a big contract because they (Kyle and Lynch) wanted him on the roster. If you’re going to use hindsight, you could blame both of them. Might as well add York as I’m sure he was involved.

      Delete
    3. Oh sure, they wanted to keep him, but not at such a price. So they brokered a trade which was about to be completed until Shanahan put his foot down. And yes, it was Shanahan, not anyone else. So in the end they had to give Aiyuk what he wanted.

This isn't hindsight. This is what happened. It's well documented, even at the time - heck, it was Lynch that told the story. If they don't learn from it they'll make the same mistakes in the future.

      Delete
    4. So you don’t think that contract was approved by Lynch, York, Marathe?

      Delete
    5. Of course it was, but those people also signed off on trading him before that. It was Shanahan that vetoed the trade.

They decided to back their HC, which in most instances I applaud. But not for the first time, their HC's personnel decision wasn't the best.

To be clear - I am not saying Shanahan should be removed from personnel decisions. I am saying that historically, on offensive players, he has often had final say. Maybe it's time for him to pull back in that regard.

      Delete
    6. The trade was being executed for the sole reason that he wouldn’t sign the contract. It’s clear all were in favor of him signing and when he came to shanahan with the news that he would sign, Kyle informed Lynch. Do you think Kyle should have not informed Lynch and let the trade happen? Lynch could have done the trade anyway. Most likely, they all discussed the situation before stopping the trade. That would be the normal course of action in a situation like this. You’re thinking that Lynch was about to push the trade button when Kyle rushed in. We don’t even know if lynch had Pittsburg on the phone or how close they were to the trade.

      Delete
    7. After re-reading the story, you are correct, my mistake. I mis-remembered the details and thought Aiyuk only agreed to sign after they called off the trade.

    8. Good discussion anyway and thank you for that.

  16. I hope this doesn't change the teams thoughts on JJ. Good player that's given them great value, but he's not worth what he's seeking. I'd rather extend Bourne to replace JJ and draft a WR.

    2. Where do you see Watkins role next season?

      Delete
    3. Primarily a slot guy with speed - similar to what they envisaged for Danny Gray. DRob I think they see as a backup X, with versatility.

      Delete
    4. I believe Watkins is Aiyuk's replacement....if only we let him play.
DRob will be productive once Purdy has a few more practices with the 1st team.

      Delete
  18. Would be nice if DRob showed SOMETHING- he supposedly had a great camp. 1. Getting out of Aiyuk contract was a gift. 2. The experience will presumably solidify a change w the front office to stick w a plan on developing young players to step up and hedging against vulnerabilities, a la Trent William's exploitation- would be nice to hit some drafts like Baltimore/Ozzie Newsom did. I preferred Aiyuk being traded, but also appreciated what he offered..... is what it is at this point, but certainly hope they don't attempt to reconcile w the price tag.

  19. Interesting comments from Shanahan re Aiyuk over on NinersWire. He sheds some light on the situation.

  20. What are the odds that Aiyuk plays this year? It sure sounds like Shanahan wants him back and that he might be getting close to being healthy. It seems like it would be in Aiyuk’s best interest to play since he is going to need a contract from someone next year.

  21. It sure would be interesting to know the details that allowed the Niners to void the contract and for Aiyuk to accept it being avoided.

NOTE: "The two best receivers in this class are Arizona State's Jordyn Tyson and Ohio State's Carnell Tate." Baumgardner writes. "For teams picking in the back-half of the first round, look at either Louisville's Chris Bell or Washington's Denzel Boston."
    * I would add WR Makai Lemon, USC: He fits 9ers ZBS, is a slot WR who can play both inside and outside. He has good speed and ability to separate against both man and zone coverage.
    * He may have trouble against physically corners that jam him at the los and his size could cause problems in contested catch situations,
