Scooter, Without a doubt Kittle makes a big difference but Atlanta's run D is pretty bad and they lost one of their inside LBs early in the game. I think the Texans will be a much better test of Kittle's effect on the run game. They have the #7 run D in the NFL.
Reading a few reports about the run game this week and sounds like another key factor was changing it up to be far more focused on power/ gap scheme this week.
I predicted a win based on Kittle's run blocking lifting the offense, and Saleh's young defense being able to limit the Falcons' running game followed by use of well-timed blitzes to rattle Penix. It's impressive how well this relatively inexperienced defense is playing. I expect the D to travel well on the next two road games.
Having now watched the game, have to say I am impressed.
That was a statement in the ground game. Straight up bullied them up front with a physical power game. Great way to get your OL back on track. CMC finally got some space and showed he's still as good as ever. And Mac was smart and efficient in the passing game.
On defense, was great to see some signs of life with the pass rush. Got a lot of pressure on Penix. And they did it while also being able to bottle up the run game. DL was excellent.
I love games like that, smash mouth take no prisoners. This team is winning with young talent which bodes well for the future. The defense stalled a really good running game and kept pressure on Falcons QB. When the Niners stop the run game and they can run the ball there is no stopping them...
This team is showing great character and moxy. There was an immediate difference with Kittle playing and I expect the same results when Aiyuk and Pearsall return. The Oline is getting their groove back and the youth movement is growing with each game. My one concern is Upton Stout. His 'hell on wheels' style is going to keep him off the field more often than not. But at the same time thats his game.
Bryce Huff (19.5%) is 9th among all edge rushers in win percentage. For context, he's one spot below Jared Verse (21.1%) and three spots away from Trey Hendrickson (22.6%).
Bryce Huff's sack on Michael Penix tonight happened in 2.6s, per NextGenStats. That's his second-fastest sack of the season, and 12th fastest in the league through 7 weeks (before MNF).
His Week 2 sack was still a hair faster (2.44s) and still holds at 6th fastest on the year.
The 2025 draft class has combined for the most scrim yds (9,523) & scrim TD (66) by any draft class through the first 7 weeks of their rookie season all-time.
Am I the only one? Last night only days after his surgery Fred Warner was on the field during warm ups motivating his team mates. When Nick Bosa was injured he stated he would remain with the team if only to keep working with the young D linemen. Then he disappeared from the 49ers facility. Bosa is a very good player but he like the rest of his family is selfish. Warner is a great player and a good man. It is only my opinion but I don't think the same can be said about NB.
I'm pretty sure Saleh is in charge of substitutions on the defensive side of the ball. When hiring a great DC like Saleh i'm sure KS has to guarantee him a certain level of decision making. If KS started micro managing Saleh's D he would be gone in a hot second
There were reports KS didn't allow Wilks to blitz as much as he wanted/was his norm while w the tm........ would be interesting to see where the truth lies there.
So I guess the question is, do they look to make a trade now to help fill the gap or wait a few more weeks to see who comes available nearer the trade deadline?
I believe that there was a trust issue with Wilkes. Shanahan and Saleh's trust has never been in question. Saleh has the freedom to call all the shots on defense which is a privileged position.
49ers DE Bryce Huff is expected to miss about two weeks due to a hamstring injury. Coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed the injury on Monday, 10/20, stating that the hope is he won't be out longer than that timeframe.
So, as the dust settles after Sundays big win. I can't help but to wonder why Dee Winters numbers have gone down. PFF gave him a 62% rating for Sundays game and DW only had 3 total tackles. Maybe one of you guys have a good perspective on this.
UC, I agree in regards to PFF. But the old fashion pre-technology eye test also indicates that Dee has slumped over the last few weeks. I can't put a finger on it as to why.
Yep, even by the eye test he hasn't been as good as the first few weeks. He was better against the Falcons than the previous two games imo, though.
As to why... well, the two games before the Falcons were probably the worst in terms of pass rush by the DL as well (that's what no Bosa will do). So that exposed all of the back 7 to harder coverage assignments, which imo has definitely impacted Winters.
I think the absence of Bosa also impacted how free the LBs have been to seek RBs in the run game or short passing game.
No Bosa. Bethume had 10 tackles in his first start against Atlanta. This is interesting given the fact that the Falcons Ocord likely planned to attack the middle with Freddie out.
The DL played significantly better against Atlanta than the previous two games, at least by my eyes. Nice to see Collins get more snaps against Atlanta (most of any DT) and hold up well - I think he was a bit of an unsung star on the day, helping to clog the middle.
I agree on AC. He did a very good job clogging up the middle. The young movement is learning quickly and they will be making more positive noise going forward.
The 49ers’ offense is converting 47.5% of its third-down attempts (2nd in NFL). The 49ers’ defense is only allowing opponents to convert 35.4% of their third-down attempts (8th in NFL).
I think any of those ridiculous claims that Shanahan can't develop QBs can well and truly be put aside now. Jimmy G, Purdy, Darnold, Mac. He knows how to maximise QBs.
I think there is a bit of a disconnect in that thought process.
If you are talking about fixing a qb's mechanics, teaching them how to make the line calls etc I would argue he isnt very good.
However, if the qb has processing and accuracy as + traits, then he can really maximize their skill set and their are few better in the league.
And while I think he could do a better job of empowering his qb's to make a few more adjustments at LOS and give them some easier answers in the dropback game. Every coach has flaws and few coaches stregths are at such a high level.
In short dont let the idea that everything has to be elite get in the way understanding you are witnessing something special.
I disagree there is a disconnect. There isn't one HC out there that teaches the QB mechanics in the NFL. When we're talking about HC's (or OC's) developing QBs we are talking about providing a system that helps the QB, teaching them how to run the system effectively, and how to understand what they see. And Shanahan is excellent at that.
Haven't watched the game yet, but man, that's a stark difference. Guess I was wrong - Kittle missing wasn't just a problem, it was THE problem.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely, also to my eyes it looked like Hennessey was an upgrade over Brendel. 61 was more consistently with his blocking.

OldCoach, we're missing guys up the ying yang and you're making excuses for Atlanta missing one of their inside LB's? 😂

ReplyDeleteI finally am getting over the Moody blues, it's nice to have a kicker that can consistently kick field goals and extra points.

Kittle come back and run game soars! Not gonna say I told you so but….
I'll say it. I told you so!
You were right on.
ReplyDeleteTatum Bethune’s first game as a starter in Fred Warner’s place:
ReplyDelete• 56 snaps
• 10 total tackles - led team
• 3 missed tackles
• 1 tackle for loss
• 4 stops
• 1 pressure
• 2 targets
• 14 yards allowed
• 79.3 overall grade
• 76.0 run grade
• 67.2 coverage grade

ReplyDeleteNothing says qb protection like a good running game, and that's been the Shanahan family philosophy for decades.
ReplyDeleteBryce Huff's sack on Michael Penix tonight happened in 2.6s, per NextGenStats. That's his second-fastest sack of the season, and 12th fastest in the league through 7 weeks (before MNF).

Huff has 4 sacks in his first 6.5 games this season. That's his second most in a season in his career.
ReplyDeleteChristian McCaffrey had six runs of 10+ yards all season, he had seven tonight alone vs. Atlanta.
