Moody Blues

The Niners are waiving kicker Jake Moody per Pelissero. Ben Sauls is the kicker I'd target.

  1. Had to happen. And should never have drafted him in the 3rd round, it was madness. Kickers often take years to develop consistency in the NFL. It's why so few young kickers stick with the original team they go to.

  2. I just hope we don't go through 3 or 4 bad kickers before we find a consistent one. Todays NFL as far as kickers go is a different world than it was 10 years ago. If they can't find a kicker who is reasonably consistent from 50+ it could cost them 3 or 4 games. A kicker like Ray Wersching Couldn't play in todays NFL.

  4. Now the question is, who do the 9ers sign that is better than Moody?

Greg Joseph: He spent training camp with the 9ers this year, so they are familiar with each other, which is definitely an advantage
What could hold the 49ers back from adding Joseph is that he's hit just 56.5% of his field goals (13 of 23) from 40 yards and longer over the past two seasons.

Eddy Pineiro: He could be a breath of fresh air for the 9ers. He doesn't have the biggest leg, but the former Panthers kicker has hit 88.1% of his career field goal attempts, which makes him the 4th most accurate kicker in NFL history.
During his three seasons in Carolina (2022-24), Pineiro hit 91.1% of his attempts from inside 50 yards. But Pineiro has struggled on extra points, hitting just 92.1% over the past three seasons, which is lower than Moody's career percentage of 97.1.

Dustin Hopkins: The 34 y/o was among the most reliable kickers for 3 seasons until his production fell off a cliff in 2024. He hit at least 90% of his field goal attempts from 2021 through 2023. If he can return to that form, he's be a strong pickup. However, he lost his job in Cleveland following a 2024 season where he hit just 66.4% of his field goals.

Greg Zuerlein: He's entering his 15th season, spending his1st 8 years playing for the Rams, so he's one of the few kickers out there who has experience kicking at Levi's Stadium. Zuerlein played 5 games at the 9ers' home stadium, and he's hit 90.9% of his field goal attempts from inside 50 yards (10 of 11).
He also has 14 career attempts at Levi's, which is the most of any kicker who's never played for the 9ers. However, the 37-year-old did struggle last year, hitting just 60% of his field goal attempts while playing for the Jets.

Whatever the 49ers do, they're going to have to do it soon.

The 9ers next practice is Wed 10trh. They'll want a kicker on their roster by the time they take the field, so it won't be long before they sign someone. Right now, it looks like Pinieiro is going to get the first crack at the job. According to ESPN, he'll be visiting with the 49ers on Tuesday.

Yea, I hate to rag on a 9er player. But to be honest, he likely should not have been drafted by the 9ers. Definitely not in the 3rd Rd.

    2. GEEP,
Even after Moody's illustrious career at Michigan, it still wasn't a good decision (imho) to draft him in the 3rd rd.

      Delete
    3. It was a terrible decision amidst a terrible draft.

      Delete
    4. The 49ers drafted three 3rd rd players in the 2023 draft. Ji'Aiyr Brown, Moody, and Cameron Latu. Brown is now the only leftover of that group. And Brown is a fringe player, imho. Maybe the 2023 draft was a weak one overall.

      Delete
    5. Yeah, I'm not one to bash a team for passing up players in the draft that go on to be good - every team is guilty of it, it's the nature of the draft. And I think you're correct - overall I don't think there's been a high percentage of players taken after the 2nd round of the 2023 draft that have developed into starters across the NFL. Some notable exceptions obviously, but not many.

Doesn't change the fact that taking a kicker over a chance at another position was a terrible choice.

  10. 49ers sign Eddie Pineiro. Has a record of being very accurate but not a strong leg. According to D. Lombardi he is the 4th most accurate kicker all time. Makes me wonder why he has been with 4 teams and wasn't signed before today?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Because the stat is misleading. He had one excellent season in 2022 that props his % up. Outside of that year he's more been league average or slightly below average FG kicker, below average PAT kicker, and has a weak leg.

Even so, he's been more reliable than Moody.

      Delete
    2. The point now isn't to be better than Moody, half the Kickers in college could be better than Moody. The point is he needs to be in the top 10 in the NFL if the 49ers are going to make the playoffs

      Delete
    3. The 49ers are unlikely to find such a kicker off the street. So no, I think the point is to find someone that can at least give them close to league average reliability.

      Delete
    4. Okay so top 16. Actually it is far more important how he kicks in the clutch.

      Delete
    5. "Close to" were pretty important words there too. Main thing is, don't be much worse than league average like Moody was.

And yes, making some clutch kicks would be huge. Let's hope.

Just highlights how silly it is spending draft picks on kickers. And how much young kickers struggle in the NFL.

  18. PiƱeiro may work out exceptionally well. Seems akin to Robbie Gould who is the 9th most accurate FG kicker in history. With the latest kickoff rule change, kickers are avoiding the end zone like the plague, and an accurate guy like PiƱeiro may be able to place the football in the 0-5yd zone quite consistently.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I absolutely hate the KO rule. If a kicker kicks into the end zone it comes out to the 35. With the range many kickers have teams are only a couple of 1st downs away from a FG. I wish they would just place the ball on the 25 after a FG or TD. If kickers keep kicking longer and longer FGs they may have to make a rule change effecting FGs

  28. Mid,
Indications are that Purdy may have suffered ligament damage to his toe. This type of injury could persist and linger for years. Patrick Willis did his best to play through his turf toe injury until he could no longer do so. The silver lining for Purdy is that his QB position doesn't require the major foot stress that Willis had as a LB.
Rest is the best treatment for turf toe and I hope that Purdy takes his time before returning.

    * Purdy has been diagnosed with a turf toe variant, which is a ligament injury affecting the bottom of his foot. he's expected to miss between 2 and 5 weeks.

  36. The week 2 game between the Saints VS 9ers will see both teams with starting QB that are back ups.

THE SAINTS GREATEST WEAKNESS ON OFFENSE:
    * Spencer Rattler is the Saints starting QB after Derek Carr retired.
Rattler was Saints 5th Rd 2024 draft pick and was winless in his 6 starts last season.
THE SAINTS GREAT STRENGTH ON OFFENSE:
    * Even with QB Rattler, the Saints' pass-catchers provides plenty of talent.
WR Chris Olave is a dominant, elite receiver when healthy. WR's Rashid Shaheed and Brandin Cooks are Speedy deep threats
TE veteran Juwan Johnson leading the team in yards. He's known for his ability to get open and lead the team in 1st down conversions,
RB Alvin Kamara is still a reliable receivers out of the backfield.

    * The Saints run defense was ranked 2nd worst in the NFL last season and remains a major liability. Veterans Davon Godchaux and Jonathan Bullard added this offseason to provide depth.
    * DE Chase Young and DT Bryan Bresee are key components of the Saints pass rush.
    * The Saints acquired veteran safeties Justin Reid and Julian Blackmon, who are both improvements over last season.

New coaching: The Saints hired HC Kellen Moore to bring a new, aggressive, and fast offensive to the team.

  37. The NFL week 2 Saints VS 9ers game winner will, IMO, come down to
which team can run the ball. The 9er RB's CMC and Robinson should
be capable of dominating the time of possession against the Saints
    D front seven.
^ The Saints new D scheme under Brandon Staley is rooted in the Vic Fangio system. It's expected to utilize hybrid fronts and heavily features a 3-4 alignment.
    * Versatility & Adaptability: Staley's scheme is not a rigid 3-4 defense. It's a hybrid system, frequently operating out of nickel and dime packages. It utilizes a "gap-and-a-half" technique for defensive linemen, allowing for both aggressive penetration and controlling adjacent gaps, aiming to confuse offenses and make it harder to decipher the defense. This flexibility allows their D to tailor their approach to different opponent strengths.
    * Coverage Disguise & Limiting Explosive Plays: Staley favors 2 high
S looks pre-snap (Cover 4 or Cover 6 quarters) but often rotates to single-high (Cover 3) or maintains split-safety zones post-snap. This strategy aims to confuse quarterbacks, force methodical underneath throws, and limit explosive passing plays.
    * The 9er passing game will, IMO, depend on Mac Jones reading the Saint's D (pre snap) and getting the ball to the 9er receivers!

    * The Saints' LB's are the strength of their D, with Pro Football Focus ranking as a top-10 unit in the NFL.
MLB Demario Davis is an All-Pro candidate who continues to be a top player and leader despite his age. Pete Werner, the other starting ILB, provides excellent coverage and overall reliable play.

I first saw it on a FB post. So I came here to see if anyone else had heard it. Later on KNBR a reporter asked KS if there was another punter out at practice today. Is Thomas Morstead injured? KS gave a strange answer he said you have better eyes than mine. I guess I will have to ask about that. I read some where that teams that are facing a left footed punter (the saints punter is left footed) will bring in a left footed punter for a try out so their returners get a little practice fielding punts from a left footed punter. I don't think players who are in for a try out get paid so I wonder if it is against league rules or are they unhappy with Morstead.

Again, I haven't heard anything regarding punter Brock Miller. But I believe that you bring up a good point about left foot punters. The rotation on the ball is different and it may cause a small measure of difficulty in catching it. I remember some 49ers WRs saying that they needed to acclimate themselves to Steve Young's passes because it had a different spin coming from a left handed QB.
