Moody Blues
The Niners are waiving kicker Jake Moody per Pelissero. Ben Sauls is the kicker I'd target.

Had to happen. And should never have drafted him in the 3rd round, it was madness. Kickers often take years to develop consistency in the NFL. It's why so few young kickers stick with the original team they go to.

ReplyDeleteI just hope we don't go through 3 or 4 bad kickers before we find a consistent one. Todays NFL as far as kickers go is a different world than it was 10 years ago. If they can't find a kicker who is reasonably consistent from 50+ it could cost them 3 or 4 games. A kicker like Ray Wersching Couldn't play in todays NFL.
ReplyDeleteEven if it does take 4-5 kickers before they find a reliable one, they are no worse off than they were with Moody.

Jake Moody
Cameron Latu
Darrell Luter
Robert Beal Jr.
Dee Winters
Brayden Willis
Ronnie Bell
Jalen Graham
Selected by the 9ers in 2023 draft
DeleteNow the question is, who do the 9ers sign that is better than Moody?
ReplyDeleteGreg Joseph: He spent training camp with the 9ers this year, so they are familiar with each other, which is definitely an advantage
What could hold the 49ers back from adding Joseph is that he's hit just 56.5% of his field goals (13 of 23) from 40 yards and longer over the past two seasons.
Eddy Pineiro: He could be a breath of fresh air for the 9ers. He doesn't have the biggest leg, but the former Panthers kicker has hit 88.1% of his career field goal attempts, which makes him the 4th most accurate kicker in NFL history.
During his three seasons in Carolina (2022-24), Pineiro hit 91.1% of his attempts from inside 50 yards. But Pineiro has struggled on extra points, hitting just 92.1% over the past three seasons, which is lower than Moody's career percentage of 97.1.
Dustin Hopkins: The 34 y/o was among the most reliable kickers for 3 seasons until his production fell off a cliff in 2024. He hit at least 90% of his field goal attempts from 2021 through 2023. If he can return to that form, he's be a strong pickup. However, he lost his job in Cleveland following a 2024 season where he hit just 66.4% of his field goals.
Greg Zuerlein: He's entering his 15th season, spending his1st 8 years playing for the Rams, so he's one of the few kickers out there who has experience kicking at Levi's Stadium. Zuerlein played 5 games at the 9ers' home stadium, and he's hit 90.9% of his field goal attempts from inside 50 yards (10 of 11).
He also has 14 career attempts at Levi's, which is the most of any kicker who's never played for the 9ers. However, the 37-year-old did struggle last year, hitting just 60% of his field goal attempts while playing for the Jets.
Whatever the 49ers do, they're going to have to do it soon.
The 9ers next practice is Wed 10trh. They'll want a kicker on their roster by the time they take the field, so it won't be long before they sign someone. Right now, it looks like Pinieiro is going to get the first crack at the job. According to ESPN, he'll be visiting with the 49ers on Tuesday.
After Moody's 59 yrd FG against the raiders in preseason, I told my wife after his teammates were celebrating with him that this was Moody's Superbowl. Too bad, I wanted the kid to succeed.

DeleteYea, I hate to rag on a 9er player. But to be honest, he likely should not have been drafted by the 9ers. Definitely not in the 3rd Rd.
GEEP,
DeleteEven after Moody's illustrious career at Michigan, it still wasn't a good decision (imho) to draft him in the 3rd rd.
👍
DeleteIt was a terrible decision amidst a terrible draft.
DeleteThe 49ers drafted three 3rd rd players in the 2023 draft. Ji'Aiyr Brown, Moody, and Cameron Latu. Brown is now the only leftover of that group. And Brown is a fringe player, imho. Maybe the 2023 draft was a weak one overall.
DeleteYeah, I'm not one to bash a team for passing up players in the draft that go on to be good - every team is guilty of it, it's the nature of the draft. And I think you're correct - overall I don't think there's been a high percentage of players taken after the 2nd round of the 2023 draft that have developed into starters across the NFL. Some notable exceptions obviously, but not many.
DeleteDoesn't change the fact that taking a kicker over a chance at another position was a terrible choice.
Dee Winters looks like he is developing if he can stay healthy. And I think Darrel Luter is solid. but not much else from 2023.
DeleteYeah, Winters is looking good.
DeleteAlso a sign of how important it is for LBs to have a DL capable of occupying multiple blockers.
Yetur Gross-Matos had the highest win percentage among all interior rushers in Week 1. He was 2.2% better than second place. Bryce Huff was top 25 among all edges.
ReplyDeleteSan Francisco is working out K Eddy Piñeiro per Garafolo.
The 49ers have released WR Robbie Chosen.
ReplyDeleteSaleh still deploying single-high safeties 64% of the time in Week 1, but it led to the 3rd-best pass defense, EPA-wise.

49ers sign Eddie Pineiro. Has a record of being very accurate but not a strong leg. According to D. Lombardi he is the 4th most accurate kicker all time. Makes me wonder why he has been with 4 teams and wasn't signed before today?
ReplyDeleteBecause the stat is misleading. He had one excellent season in 2022 that props his % up. Outside of that year he's more been league average or slightly below average FG kicker, below average PAT kicker, and has a weak leg.
DeleteEven so, he's been more reliable than Moody.
The point now isn't to be better than Moody, half the Kickers in college could be better than Moody. The point is he needs to be in the top 10 in the NFL if the 49ers are going to make the playoffs
DeleteThe 49ers are unlikely to find such a kicker off the street. So no, I think the point is to find someone that can at least give them close to league average reliability.
Deletehe field goal percentages for Eddy Pineiro for the following years are as follows:
ReplyDelete2022: A field goal percentage of 94.3% was achieved.
2022 season: Pineiro made 13 out of14 field goal attempts from the 40 - 49 yard range
2023: A field goal percentage of 86.2% was achieved.
2023 season: Pineiro made 7 out of 9 field goal attempts from the 40 - 49 yard range He also made 5 out of 7 attempts from 50+ yards.
2024: A field goal percentage of 84.6 was achieved.
2024 season: Pineiro made 6 out of 8 field goal attempts from the 40 - 49 yard range.

Kicks from 40 to 49 are chip shots in todays NFL. The really good kickers are pretty consistent from 55 to 60 and maybe further with the new ball rules.
DeleteEddy Pineiro hit 93.8% of his extra point attempts in 2022, 85.0% in 2023, and 94.3% in 2024.
ReplyDeleteOne solution to the FG problem is to score a lot more points than the opposition, make no game close...
