Week 1 Gameplan

 Run the football 30+ times?

  1. I think Farrell will be a much more significant signing than anyone is recognizing at this point- especially while WR room is light- allows them to run a lot more 22 personnel- run, slip Kittle, run some more.

  2. I would love to see CMC carry the ball 18-20 times and Robinson 10 -12 times. I don't see it happening. The Seahawks are going to load the box. Forcing BP with a decimated WR room to win. A thin O line, weak WR group and a young D that hasn't played together as well as being on the road lead me to believe it will be the Seahawks week.

    1. Yeah, I have that feeling as well.
Seattle is a bad matchup opening week for this team. They have an incredibly stout defense. And while some poo poo the lack of weapons outside because of Kittle and CMC, not having a second receiver that teams need to respect can really condense the field. SF will need to play clean and have methodical drives... where this gets scary is the run blocking hasn't looked great.
On D we will see how much sf has shored up their Run D right off the bat because Seattle's Oline has been flat dominant in the run game.
Hoping for an ugly win where the D steps up and turns Darnold over a a time or two with an explosive from special teams.

    2. I have a different opinion... here is what we have going for us:

      1. Seattle is implementing a new scheme on offense. Their OL, WRs all need to adjust, along with Darnold. Also play-calling will be a step down from Kevin O Connell to Klint Kubiak. I'm hoping that getting them in the first week, will be beneficial for us.

      2. 'Hawks WRs are decimated too. They traded DK Metcalf, Released Tyler Lockett and Noah Fant. They have an aging Kupp/Jaxon Smith-Njigba and a young rookie who has been electric in preseason, but had a hamstring injury.

So overall, I would say our TE, RB group is better and WRs, Oline are slightly worse off on offense.

      3. I'm confident that Saleh can adjust to Seattle's scheme as it is very similar to what we have here and what was used by the Jets.

Division games are always close and the only Division game we won last year was @Seattle. So I'm hoping for a close fought 1-score win.

  3. As I alluded too in my response to OC, I really feel like the first few weeks will be an offensive slog .
I look for the O to take off after week 3 (if they can stay healthy). The addition of Robinson at that point I don't think can be overstated.

    1. Signing DRob in F/A was such a sneaky good pick up. He's a weapon in the Red Zone. I predict 4-6 TD's from him even with him missing 3 games.

    2. I agree, possibly even more. That is why I think they will pick up steam after week 3. Then, if BA can retain his ability to separate even if he is not full speed until next year. It will give the team 3 quality receivers.
I don't think you need a great receiver but having quality receivers across the board would make the team really hard to defend.
I just hope they can make the post season because I really think they could make some noise at that point, as that is when I expect the team to really start coming together.

    3. Doesn't hurt that Shanahan is 8-4 in the post season.

  4. Usually, we win when the Niners run the ball 30+ times. I am much more concerned with the ability to stop the run. Pound the rock and the defense stops the pounding.

  5. To beat Seattle the 9ers will need to do the following:
    1) Control the LOS on both sides of the ball, protect BP and give him time find his receivers. Open running lanes for CMC and Robinson.
    2) On D, stop the run and put pressure on QB Darnold. * Key weaknesses for Darnold are turnovers, holding onto the ball too long, an elongated motion, and issues with processing information under pressure that leads to poor decision-making.
    * Darnold's effectiveness can be greatly influenced by the quality of his receivers.
WR Smith-Njigba will need to take on a much larger role. He is still viewed as a promising talent, but his production level is dependent on scheme and volume.
    * Seattle traded star WR DK Metcalf to the Steelers and released Tyler Lockett, dismantling what had been one of the NFL's most dynamic and reliable receiving duos.
Seattle replaced Metcalf with WR Cooper Kupp and drafted rookie Tory Horton to stretch the field.
    * For the 2025 season, the receiving group is generally ranked in the lower half of the league by analysts, with some placing it in the bottom third.

    1. Walker is also dinged... although, the new staff likes Charbonnet a lot. I like the 49ers here......... pressure Darnold, stop the run- I think they try and get cute at times. On offense, run the ball and slip Kittle..... also, Pearsall was reportedly beating Man coverage in camp, so I am hoping he can get 6-10 targets.

Seattle HC Macdonald says RB Walk Kenneth Walker has been battling a foot injury, but is expected to play in Week 1 VS the 9ers.
If Walker's foot hasn't healed it will, IMO, be a significant
change in Seattle's game plan. Walker is an explosive,
creative runner. Charbonnet is a physical runner, but more a 3Rd third-down, short-yardage back.

  6. They put 8 in the box we gotta make it painful.

  7. Re Guerendo, I can't imagine Kyle not using him as a WR. Anyone have any thoughts on this.

    1. Kittle, CMC (defenses can't really play man coverage with him on the field) Guerendo and even BRob can catch. So yes, George if you recall the '84 team they threw a lot to Tyler or Craig out of the backfield from two rb sets.

  8. The 49ers signed DT Evan Anderson and OL Kilian Zierer to the practice squad. To make room, they released DE William Bradley-King.

I look for KS to use CMC (or Robinson), Kittle and Ferrell in a 12 personnel package, plus 2 WR's (Juice as a WR to block) to offset Seattle using 8 in the box. If JJ plays, he can rotate with Juice.
    * 2 TE's expand running lanes, creates gaps for the O line to block and the RB to exploit. This should create advantageous matchups and open up running lanes that are harder to defend than when the defense is focused on a concentrated box.
    * If Seattle stacks the box to stop the run, it leaves fewer defenders in coverage, particularly in the deep areas of the field or on the perimeter. 12 personnel can exploit this by utilizing the TE's as receiving threats, running routes that attack the seams, sidelines, or deep zones and by using WR's to stretch the field vertically.
    * Against a D like Seattle, that is not used to playing together, 2 TE's can create confusion and miscommunication regarding their gap assignments.
NOTE: Seattle's D front 7 are not accustomed to defending multiple tight ends. Advantage 9ers.

I agree. IMO, the key to a 9er win will be stopping Seattle RB Kenneth Walker and getting pressure on QB Darnold.
      * Seattle's O-Line is improved from last season, but it's still considered average at pass blocking. Bosa, Huff and Williams should get pressure on Darnold and a few sacks.

  10. Patrick Willis was asked if the Super Bowl window is closing for this group of players on the 49ers:

“If we’re being truthful, I’ll say that the window is getting thinner. It’s thin. That’s why I really feel like they’ll have to be exact all year long. Every team needs a healthy team, but for them it’s really going to be significant. I know they don’t have the depth they once had in those strong years. Usually when a team is really good and has a strong chance, they have depth.

I know they are not as loaded as in years past, so I’m looking at that veteran leadership. It’s going to take them, every week, looking into that window of reality and saying, 'Listen, this could be our last go-round together'. We hope that it’s not, but it very well could be for some of those guys. It’s really important they maximize it. It’s going to take everything they have been, and more. It’s a lot to ask, but why not? They have done it.”

  11. I agree with PW.
I've said since the draft that the 49ers will see much better success by next year when the young players are (hopefully) hitting their stride. For me, this season is more about seeing positive growth. If they make the postseason it will be a pleasant surprise, for me.

  12. Brian Robinson had 19 carries of 10+ yards last season. He was also one of 19 RBs to hit at least 20 mph on the GPS, per Next Gen Stats.

  14. Legit- stop the run and pressure the QB this season and they should be golden........ stay healthy. Not quite sure what the Division will look like, but I think AZ and Seattle will improve while Rams will be Stafford-dependent w his back (again, stop the run and pressure QB). For me, I think Sherm alluded to it the other day, the veterans have to appreciate their career status and not allow games to slip away this season- I think the coaching changes and focus on that will go a long way this season- let's not forget special teams were a shit-show and Wilks (did Shanny handcuff him?) and Sorenson left a lot to be desired- my frustration w Wilks was not making a change on coverage on Kelce in the SB when it mattered most- and I believe some of the players even suggested it and he didn't do it.
