Still 20, elite run defender, legitimate pass rush upside, prerequisite measurables/athleticism & seemingly high end football character.

Alignment flexibility with the traits to bet Kris Kocurek can develop him into a force here in Round 2.
  • 75
    49ers Logo
This might be a tad early but he is what they look for in a WLB and completes the 3rd level in their belief in a strong 7 man front.
  • 100
    49ers Logo
Tony Pauline noted that the 49ers had strong interest in Dorian Strong and I think this is where they take him.
  • 113

No RB's on the top 30 but they trust Bobby Turner's extensive evaluation.

  1. Lots of guys they've shown interest in there, so could definitely see that being the draft.

Latest I've heard is that Nolen is Kocurek's preferred option, which isn't surprising. But could easily see them having a few Edge, DTs and OTs ranked around the same area. Williams has grown on me the more I watched him - really wish that Georgia D would've played him more often as a true Edge. Same with Landon Jackson at Arkansas.

    1. I want Nolen in the worst way. I've maintained from the beginning that Kocurek would pound the table for him. This is the most interesting draft since this regime has taken over.

      Delete
    2. I think Nolan is likely the best player available at that time... The only problem is I think the dropoff at edge higher than at DT. And if I'm being honest... If I went DT with him I think I'd double dip and possibly skip edge altogether.

    3. I think after Graham and Nolen the iOL drop off is significant as opposed to the bigger DE's the Niners prefer.

  2. Razor,
Your best mock yet. I haven't done a mock yet so this weekend/early next week I will do 3. One with a trade up in the 1st round. One staying put at 11 and one with a trade back. I haven't hit on any more than one pick in the last couple of years so hopefully I will have better luck this year. One week until the draft.

    1. Thanks Coach. Looking forward to your predictive draft.

  3. I want my defense to be the best. I do not know college players but I think I know what the Niners needs so my draft will be about positions not players and it will be a defensive minded draft. No trade up or down.

    11. Edge
    43. DL
    75. DL
    100. LB
    113. CB
    138. OL
    147. OL
    160. DL
    227. S
    249. WR
    252. TE

Of course, I don't know if the players will fit this board. It's just an idea how I first would approach this. If you cannot stop the run, you will not win many games. If Purdy plays well the Niners still have fire power on offense.

    1. Can probably change the order on the first five picks with respect to the availability of talent with each player. But yah, keep the other team from scoring makes life easier for the offense.

    2. UC,
No RBs? You must really trust CMC and Guerendo's health.

      Delete
    3. I am of the same mindset UC, but more BPA- that said, only caveat I would add is taking a Corner higher if warranted- I agree on RB/TE being low, and in regards to OId Coach, have a good line and you can find a RB to fill in........ build the trenches. Perhaps, Tre Brown can prove worthy now that he is healthy.

      Delete
    4. OldCoach, I do not trust any RB's health, I am hoping KS is astute enough to find a RB in the undrafted FA. Chubb is still hanging around.

  4. My thoughts are:
    - They would love nothing more than to find a trade partner to move back from 11 and add at least 1 day 2 pick. But very unlikely to happen.
    - If the pick at 11, it will be DL or OL, but probably DL.
    - If they can move back, Derrick Harmon is a name to watch.
    - Pick 43 will also be a DL or OL, but more likely a DL.
    - Harold Fannin Jr will be a guy they really want at 75. If they miss out on him, Conyers on day 3 becomes a target.
    - They are hoping Chris Paul Jr will be there late day 2. May move up to get him. If he's gone, DL will likely be the value pick.
    - Rounds 4 & 5 are where they'll add a CB, iOL, and another DL (if they get Paul, LB if not), and a RB.
    - Round 7 is for WR and depth.

    1. My current projection for pick 11 is Shemar Stewart. I think the 49ers will fall in love with the tools. Plus run defender with elite traits for a pass rusher in their system.

Not my cup of tea, but I can see it happening.

      Delete
    2. Risky. The backlash will be loud but you're paying Kocurek near the top of the pay scale for players like this.

      Delete
    3. Definitely risky. But not only are you betting on Kocurek, you're also betting on the system maximising his talent. He doesn't need to bend as much in a wide 9. He can be a better version of Ziggy Ansah.

      Delete
    4. That's what I love about the wide 9. Hard to find 260lbs+ guys that can bend. Widen the big boy out so he doesn't have to.

      Delete
    5. Exactly. Give him a runway to use his explosiveness and speed to power while reducing the angles he needs to take to the QB when trying to go round the OT. And with Stewart's size, you have the option of moving him inside on passing downs too.

      Delete
    6. I'm not a fan of Stewart and prefer Scourton. That said he's is an ideal fit for the wide 9 edge. He doesn't need to bend but crash and collapse and he's physically the most suited for it.

      Delete
  5. Stewart is a guy I like. I wouldn't be mad if the 49ers pick him at #11. But, I would be mad if they pass on Nolen if he's still there at #11. If the 49ers trade down for a couple more top 100 players, I would be good with that as well. Bill Walsh was very good at trading during the draft to get more picks in the mid to later rds.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I would love to see Josh Simmons fall on the 49ers lap at 43, but that could be a pipe-dream. Belton, Conerly, and Ersery more than likely will be available in rd 2.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I'd want a rotational contributer at 43. Too early for me to roll the dice on Simmons here. Day 3 for mine.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah, my guess atm is they'll go DL back to back at 11 and 43, unless an OT they really like falls in their laps.

Would not be surprised by a trade back from 43 either.

      Delete
    2. Razor,
If the 49ers can get Josh Simmons in the 3rd rd, it could become the steal of the draft once JS is at full speed after his injury.

      Delete
    3. I think "once JS is at full speed after his injury" should read "if JS is ever at full speed after his injury".

That patellar tendon injury is the same one Richburg, McGlinchey and Drake Jackson suffered. They never fully recovered. Plenty of other examples across the NFL. One of the hardest injuries to recover from.

      Delete
    4. It would be a shame if Simmons can't get pass his injury. But if not the 49ers, some team will likely draft him and hope for the best. An 80% healthy JS might still be darn good.

      Delete
    5. Big risk to take early in the draft. Can't see the 49ers taking it.

"There's not a lot of people that have the skillset to play tackle, so it reduces the pool and they typically go pretty early. ... We are very selective."

  10. Razor,
That statement could easily be interpreted as saying that the 49ers may draft one of the top 3 OL players with their first pick.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If not for the fact that the only opening on the OL is LG.

      Delete
    2. AES, exactly. They will be hoping they don't have such an opportunity again any time soon. So if finding such a guy is really hard, and usually only get them early... with Williams a year to year prospect... an OT is definitely on the table at 11.

      Delete
    3. There is only two true LT's in this draft. Simmons and possibly Conerly.

      Delete
    4. I keep hearing the 49ers love Banks and also like Membou.

      Delete
    5. Latest rumours though suggest the 49ers won't even get a sniff at either, with Raiders, Jets and Bears all really liking both those guys as well.

      Delete
  11. If the 49ers can trade down for a late 1st rd pick and add another 2nd rd pick for compensation, Simmons and Belton would make it a good draft alone. What do you guys think?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I actually disagree. I would hate the idea of picking up an extra draft pick just to use it on a red shirt guy coming off a major injury with very low return to play levels. And also not sold on Belton as a fit for the 49ers.

But do like the idea of trading back.

      Delete
  12. I hear you, Scooter. Some mocks that I've seen don't look at OL as a major need until day 2. With that in mind, I can wait for Simmons while he red shirts and give Belton ample time for coaching up. These two have the athletic attributes to eventually make a difference on the OL.

  13. DJ Giddens manipulates second level defenders. He doesn't go down on 1st contact. 3rd in the class in missed tackles per 100 touches. 4.43/39" vert/10'10" broad at 212 pounds. Explosive, elusive athlete, who falls forward.

    1. Fwiw, I have heard Nolen is Kocurek's favourite. But also heard he has been taken off the 49ers draft board.

But as to how much you hear is true is anybody's guess.

    1. I doubt he can play DT in base, but he can play off ball LB, so the versatility is definitely there.

  20. Colin Cowhard,
"Let's be honest, if you're gonna spend money on Brock Purdy, then you better protect him," Cowherd concluded. "Their O-line is the weakest part of that team, and he's the best available. I like him (Kevin Banks) better than Will Campbell."

I, 60% agree. I would not be completely surprised if the 49ers go with KB.

    1. For a guy that moves pretty well at the LOS it is really surprising to see how bad he is at changing direction and breaking down to tackle behind the LOS.

But he's another guy I think the 49ers will be higher on than I am. He brings what they covet.

      Delete
  23. One guy I was really high on before the Senior Bowl that I now think is very overrated is Darius Alexander.

When he was considered a day 3 guy I thought he was a steal. Great tools. Now he's considered a potential top 50 pick which imo is far too high for his production profile and tape. He should be a late day 2/ early day 3 guy.

  24. I have my doubts Kocurek is concerned about coaching up Nolen given he handled Suh just fine.

    1. I've got a feeling the 49ers are eyeing Omarr Noman-Lott and Aeneas Peebles as 3T options. And Tyleik Williams or CJ West as 1T options.

    2. Could be plan A but could also be plan B or C just as well.

  25. If the 49ers want a D1S with their 1st draft pick. That guy is OL Kevin Banks who can play OG and OT. With a 50+ million dollar QB on the field, KB can be an iron dome. This pick makes sense in honest opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I didn't like Banks from the beginning and I still don't. I think his stock is inflated due to the weak class.

  27. iDL falls off quick. If you want a potential top 3t in the league you gotta take either Graham or Nolen.

    ReplyDelete
  28. We're about to find out if 3t or Edge is the priority in this scheme. They've got one premier Edge rusher in Bosa. Do they want to add another or add interior pressure next to him. 4 days....

    1. I would be happy with either one, if DT is limited you got to cover the position as the Niners need 2 of them.

    1. I hear where you are coming from and in most cases I would agree with you in protecting Purdy but the OL isn't as bad shape as some surmise. As far as Williams replacement, very important indeed. The main problem is lots of needs and limited resources to fill them.

      Delete
  30. UC,
I hope TW has a longer career, but his body will begin to break down sooner than later because of age and the physicality of the game. Waiting for a higher tier Olinemen to replace him may be a big gamble. If the 49ers win anywhere between 9-11 games in 2025 an opportunity to draft a top tier Olinemen becomes more challenging in next year's draft. I guess that maybe I'm looking too far ahead.
