I've had Walter Nolen as my top iDL from the get go. All Lynch has to do is determine if football means enough to him.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see who the 49ers drafted by this time tomorrow. The media talking-heads are throwing spaghetti at the wall to see if their mock players stick. Daniel Jeremiah is the latest one with the 49ers picking Grey Zabel at #11. Wow, tomorrow can't come soon enough.

DeleteDJ is awesome, but I'm not convinced he's plugged into the 49ers. Feels more like a connecting dots situation than inside info thing.
McShay and Schrager both think 49ers will take Nolen if available, based on who they've talked too. Though McShay thinks the Panthers will take Nolen if Walker is gone by 8. Fwiw, I believe Schrager was the most accurate mocker last year. Both he and McShay are very plugged in.
Regardless of what direction the 49ers go, I just hope they don't go into the draft with the idea of playing it safe and just not stuffing it up. You don't build championship rosters playing it safe.
ReplyDeleteThat's not to say they shouldn't take guts that are considered safe prospects, just don't go into it pushing guys up their draft board just because they feel like a guy that won't be a complete bust. Have to still try and find some guys they think could be elite.

Albert Breer's final mock draft has the 49ers taking Walter Nolen at #11, but has an interesting take on who the "curveball" pick could be:

Yup got to fix the defense, my position mock reflected that. They allowed somewhere around 26 points a game last year. Bring that down to below 20 points a game and the Niners will go to the playoffs.

ReplyDeleteLove that attitude, from Graham. Either Graham, Nolen, and Stewart, I would be happy with. I'm not a fan of Mykel Williams. He is a beneficiary of playing on one of the best defenses in college football. I believe that his stats should have been more impressive, imho.
ReplyDeleteWell, must admit I had thought the 49ers would be scared off by Nolen's attitude, but now seems they are happy with his character. If that's the case he's the pick I'd make at 11, even over Graham. Tbh the only guys I'd personally take over Nolen are Carter and Hunter.

ReplyDeleteI'm surprised I would have gone with Walter Nolen, Shemar Stewart or Tyler Warren. Williams is a very good to great run defender and an under whelming pass rusher. I was hoping for more of a dominant player. Hopefully Saleh/Kocurek will develop his pass rush. He also played injured for quite a bit last season, so maybe he develops. I wonder if the 49ers will try to move back into the 1st round or up in the 2nd to get a DT. I think a run on DTs may start with Grant.

Now i'm worried. I was checking out some Youtube reactions. First Larry Krueger (whose opinion I respect he is a former pro football scout) he hates the pick but what really worries me is that Grant Cohn absolutely loves the pick.

He is solid on setting the edge. With Bosa/Saleh/Kocurek, he will have the best of teachers.
Krug is no match for the combined efforts and talent of the scouting department, GM, Salah, etc. This could turn out to be a great addition that only time will tell.

DeleteAs far as Willisms goes, I somewhat agree with Kreug. He's not a good pass rusher right now. But he's a better athlete than Kreug gives him credit for.
As I said before, he's the safe pick. Excellent run defender with tools to be a good pass rusher.

ReplyDeleteWilliams is apparently still not completely healed from an angle injury according to Krueg. But as LK said, "the production is not there." And that is what has concerned me about Mykel all along. I would not put all my eggs in the basket that Williams is the D1S. But, I certainly welcome anyone to tell me I'm wrong.

DeleteLook, maybe YGM technically starts the season, but Williams will get a lot of snaps in 2025, health permitting.
To be a big day 1 contributor at DL you have to defend the run. He does that. And he has sufficient athletic traits to at least trouble OTs at times against the pass while he develops that part of his game.
I can’t tell you that you’re wrong. After all, I’m just a guy sitting on my couch. Drafting is not a science and since I’m not a scientist I rely on the experts who run my favorite team. Pick any topic in the world and you will find a divergence of opinion. I’ll put my trust in the people whose careers depend on making these decisions.

Lol. That's how to cut to the chase, Scooter. Listening to Lynch's and Shanahan's presser there's no doubt that they coveted Williams all along. I won't doubt their decision. But I will have a wait and see attitude for now.

After looking at things for a while I wouldn't be surprised if the 49ers don't trade back in the 2nd round (if there are any takers) I think they could get the same value in the mid to late 50s as at 43. My choices would be Darius Alexander DT, T.S. Sanders DT, Aireontae Ersery OL, Tate Ratledge OL, Carson Schwesinger LB.

My smoky choices would be Noel at 43 or Fannin Jr at 75 just in terms adding potential stars even though they are somewhat luxury picks.
