F/A Acquisition Pool: Drew Dalman (C), Andre Cisco (S), Poona Ford (DT), Joe Flacco (QB), Jermaine Sherwood (LB), Assante Samuel (CB), Tommy Tremble (TE), Rondale Moore (WR)
Resign: Jaylon Moore, Ben Bartch, Sam Okuayinonu, Evan Anderson (Greenlaw signs with Washington)
Some people might query going defense with the first five picks - I'm not one of them. The defense needs a significant infusion of youth and talent.
ReplyDeleteAgreed.
DeleteSame- reports are that Saleh was already calling for more speed on the back end. W Hufunga, I DO like him, but I believe he hasn't been utilized to match his skill set- I would have made him a box Safety and blitzed more when there was talent at Corner, a la Polamalu. And sadly, Brown seemed to regress last season.
Delete49ers grant Deebo permission to seek trade! Wow......... I suppose not surprising after slipping production last season. Any thoughts on value? A 4th? Maybe a late 3rd to someone like the Raiders that need playmakers?
ReplyDeleteLooks very similar to Arik Armstead last year. I doubt the Niners get offered anything more than a 5th. I think in the end Deebo ends up taking a pay cut over getting cut and plays out the year, thereby getting the Niners maybe a 4th round comp pic in 2026.
Deletediptown,
DeleteI like the idea of trading him for a 4th, but I think it is unlikely that a trade happens for a couple of reasons:
1) The timing of this news.... we are on a deadline to trade him before March 22, before the $15.4M hits. Smart GMs will just wait it out I guess.
2) Injury history: The last time Deebo played a full season was 2021. Coupled with his style of play, expectations will be tempered.
3) Deebo didn't put on good tape last year. He looked like a fool when he went after the ST players and didn't back up his "talk" with his "walk". So locker room dynamics will also be considered by new GMs.
Diptown,
DeleteDeebo's name has been mentioned more than a few times for a trade. Now, that it seems to be coming to a head I only have one question: what can the 49ers get for him?
Maiocco- San Francisco has a projected $48 million in cap space for 2025, according to OverTheCap.com.
DeleteThe 49ers restructured Samuel's contract in September to lower his base salary to $1.17 million for the upcoming year.
The deal is structured in such a way to make it convenient for them to designate him as a post-June 1 release at considerable cap savings this year.
If the 49ers opted to release Samuel with a post-June 1 designation, it would have created $5 million in cap savings, while he still would have counted $10 million against the cap.
If San Francisco were to trade Samuel before June 1, the team would absorb $31.55 million on this year’s contract due to previous money Samuel collected from the 49ers that was prorated against the cap on an annual basis.
Yeah, as of right now it is more likely the 49ers would just release him than trade him, unless a team is willing to part with a pick the 49ers consider worth absorbing the additional cap hit this year for.
DeletePre June 1, it would need to be a sign and trade, I can't see SF paying his salary to play for someone else... except to buy a higher draft pick. Otherwise, it would need to be a post June 1 trade for it to make sense for SF.
DeleteThey must have restructured Deebo last year so they could open up short-term cap flexibility, knowing they'd end up rolling over to '25 because it’s unused and then when they'd end up releasing him, they'd have the cap space to absorb it
DeleteI suspect they'd still prefer to push some of the cap hit to next year if possible.
DeleteIt's gonna be an interesting 2 months.
Delete* Not sure FA CB Assante Samuel is worth his projected Market value of ~$11 Mil P/Y, after missing most of 2024 with a shoulder injury? CB Charvarius Ward's 2024 salary was ~$12.5 Mil P/Y and he was a
ReplyDelete2nd team all pro in 2023.
* for about the same salary, the 9ers could try to sign free agent CB DJ Reed for ~$10 - $11 Mil per year.
I suspect Reed's $ will be much higher, $17 range... prob same w Ward.
DeleteAgree with dlptown.
DeleteSpotract calculated Market value 0f $14.7 Mil P/Y is a little higher than I thought....But less than $17 Mil. P/Y.
Deletehttps://www.spotrac.com/nfl/player/market-value/_/id/25243/dj-reed
Question for Razor- if Will Johnson is there at 11, you taking him over Nolen?
ReplyDeleteNo. Doesn't he have a hip injury? This team has yet to show they put a premium on that position anyway. Highest they've gone was last year late 2nd on Green.
DeleteHappy Super Bowl Sunday everyone! - feels empty after the shit year....... but, I am feeling pretty good w the offseason so far w Saleh and Bradley. I am hoping for a shit-show game ..... turnovers galore, inept offense...... 0-3 Chiefs- I don't want KC to win, but Philly fans just seem like schmucks. I also believe Reid and Spags is/has been the best coaching duo for a long time.
ReplyDeleteWho on this mock and FA signings will step in at LB next to Warner?
ReplyDeleteI think they draft one/sign one, but also, they liked Robinson and he was slated to start before tearing the ACL- that said, he is undersized.
DeleteJermaine Sherwood
DeleteJamaree Caldwell (340 lbs.) is a poor mans Kenneth Grant:
ReplyDelete- holds the point in the A-gap
- splits double teams
- wins with power
- wins with speed
- chases screens/stretch runs to the sideline
Surprising he doesn't have more buzz.
As with Garrett, if Deebo really wants a trade he might need to restructure the timing of his option bonus so the 49ers can do a post June 1 trade.
ReplyDeleteKind of a weird idea... but if Deebo's salary is the biggest hold up. Could SF offer Deebo and a pick in order to get a team to accept a sign and trade? The idea being to get rid of the entire 15M and rather than just 5 post june 1.
DeleteObviously you wouldnt want to give up too valuable of a pick if you did it but the addition of 15M in cap space might be more valuable than the pick.
Couple quick questions:
ReplyDelete1). Is everyone ready to give up on JiAyer Brown? He seemed to show promise rookie year and he did experience a bit of a sophmore slump but then the whole defense struggled.
2). What is the opinion of Jaylon Moore? The organization seems to think highly of him. He gets hurt early every training camp and I always think he will get cut but he makes the team. It seems that he is T. Williams"s designated back up. He is Ok.
Thanks to all here for your great insights and information.
I'm kinda out on Brown as anything more than a special teams contributer who can play S in a pinch.
DeleteJayon Moore is valuable as a swing OT so without an adequate replacement he'll probably get resigned for like 2 mill.
For mine it's not so much a case of being out on Brown or giving up on him, as it is I just don't think you can go into next season counting on him.
DeleteIf they can bring back Moore on the cheap then great.
Moore will get a chance at a starting gig somewhere, I believe... and 49ers prob won't be able to keep him financially anyways. Brown will hopefully rebound, but I imagine they see him as a depth piece .... there was a NOTICEABLE shift when Hufunga returned, and I am a Brown fan.
DeleteJust from the opening drives you can see Roseman's rebuilding of his defensive front paying off against the Chiefs offensive line. It's imperative for Lynch to hit early and often following the same strategy in this draft.
ReplyDeleteYep.
DeleteFor mine the ShanaLynch era is now entering its second biggest task since taking over. The biggest was turning a terrible roster into a SB contender, which they did successfully.
But now that roster is aging out. It's no longer just about retaining it and putting some decent pieces around it. They need to find new stars to replace the good players they've had.
It's possible to do but isn't simple. If they don't get a strong immediate return from this draft as well as continued growth from last year's draft class then it will be difficult to get back to the SB next season.
It's not as daunting a task as when they took over but they don't have 3 years to do it either.
DeleteI'll also say, this is not just showing the importance of a really good DL. It's also showing the importance of having a good OL.
DeleteYEP! - and II am sure Washington and Dallas are taking note as well- who knows what the will Giants do.......
DeleteI agree with Foerster. There's a mid-level that you need to be at on OL in order to compete for championships, and you have to be at that line and not below it. Not true for the defensive line. You need it to be the strength of your roster.
DeleteSpags has 11 tacklers on the field at all times. What a DC.
ReplyDeleteVic Fangio has himself one hell of a defense.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking the same thing.
DeleteLynch can do it in a year just like Roseman did if he hits his picks in this draft.
DeleteCarter falling to them at 7 last year was horribly luck for the NFC..........
DeleteLynch needs 3 more beasts next to Bosa and two more in reserve.
DeleteThe only reason the 49ers Franchise was able to get off life support is because of Kyle Shanahan.
ReplyDeleteMy early guess on who the 49ers draft at WR is Jaylin Noel.
ReplyDeleteJJ's eventual replacement.
DeleteI really like how he runs his route stems. Gets on the DB in a hurry and uses subtle movements to manipulate the DB where he wants them. Very nuanced. Clearly very smart and well coached. Elite acceleration/ deceleration and agility. Also love how under control at the catch point he is, even when running full pace, and how easily he tracks the ball.
DeleteThose elements of his game are actually reminiscent of Odell Beckham Jr imo. Some of the things I absolutely loved about OBJ coming out of LSU. Noel doesn't have the length, hand size or elite body control of OBJ though.
You thinking 3rd round and can he offer anything as a rookie in this offense?
DeleteYeah, 3rd round.
DeleteEverything I have read about him and seen on film makes me think he could see the field as a rookie. I don't think you should expect a high volume player as a rookie, but he could provide a Taylor Gabriel type role while also being a return man.
Noel might be their best bang for buck wr in the draft in round 3. I'm not convinced they draft one but if they did, I agree he'd likely be the guy. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on Beaux Collins outta Notre Dame. I'm looking at him as a late flyer or UDFA. He's kinda flying under the radar given he operated in a predominantly run it down your throat offense. Of course he'd be a developmental "project" this year, but maybe next he could make a little noise.
DeleteI think he is similar to Burden but with a much lower price tag. And I think he could be used similar to Deebo, in the years before his back(side) became too wide.
DeleteOnce again, nothing changes, defenses win championships. That was quite the performance by the Eagles defense.
ReplyDeleteThe more things change, the more they stay the same.
DeleteSpotrac calcuclated Market Value for NFL 2025 free agents:
ReplyDeleteNOTE: Eagles have 2 FA's, DE Milton Williams = $12,000,225 and Josh
Sweat = $18,882,277

To think Sirianni could turn it around in PHI and Shanahan can't is dumb.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking the same thing. I remember the 2023 season when we went to Phily and crushed them. Deebo had his best game. Different team, but need to hit on draft picks now.
DeleteDefensively, the Niners have to be able to get the job done upfront with 4. That blueprint hasn't changed. They just need to find the personnel.
ReplyDeleteWe need our edges to get back to closing and crushing pullers and split zones instead of sitting and bracing.
ReplyDeleteDeebo really can't be traded pre June 1 without the team losing $16M. He'll be a post June 1 designation cut, same as Hargrave.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I would be surprised if they agreed to eat all of the $31M dead cap hit this year. Would take a very nice trade return to contemplate it.
DeleteI do wonder if Deebo would be willing to negotiate the timing of his option bonus, to allow the 49ers to trade him after the draft as a post June 1 trade. It's non-guaranteed so if the 49ers cut him he won't see it and can't be certain a team would be willing to pay him that as a FA. A potential option, but would also mean they don't get an additional draft pick this year.
Just releasing him seems like the most realistic option right now.
Illinois State DB Keondre Jackson is a swiss army knife that packs a punch.
ReplyDeleteThe theme for this offseason should be invest heavily in the defensive line. Then invest some more. Keep doing it.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I would be quite comfortable with a draft that brought in 4 or even 5 DL.
DeleteCaveat would be to take a Corner in the 3rd/4th and LB in 3-5th............ and that is not dependent on S as Mustafa and Brown could start
DeleteMonsters on the edges and beasts in the middle is the way.
DeleteI agree we need to rebuild the D and not just D line. It can't be D only they need to sign 1 FA O lineman Dalman preferably. They need to draft 1 O lineman in the first 3 rounds and 1 WR. Then it can be all D.
ReplyDeleteWhen you think about it, it really is a lot of spots on this team that could do with an upgrade. Seems unrealistic that they'll be able to upgrade all of them.
DeleteGoing to be interesting to see how they go about it.
Starter grades on 12 DT's last years draft. 24 starter grades on this years DT class. What a great year to rebuild your defensive front!!
ReplyDeleteThe Chiefs really just couldn't muster up enough protection to attack the Quarters coverages that they were bombarded with. Their typical Quarters beaters had no effect at all and for whatever reason, they didn't utilize their speed screens, Raptor/Laker jailbreaks, or Smoke routes to exploit the space the Eagles were offering up in the undercoverage.
ReplyDeleteDane Brugler has Jalon Walker number 3 overall in his latest top 100.👀
ReplyDeleteHe may end up being proven right. But man, it just feels like a lot of projection is needed to justify such a high ranking right now.
DeleteYea, I can't see the Niners taking him that high when his coverage and knowledge will need to be coached up over time.
DeleteI'd definitely feel more comfortable taking a more proven performer at 11.
DeleteThe 49ers are going to get their guy. Only question is, will it be OL or DL with #11? Either way, there's good players all the way thru day 3 of the draft. This is the time when regional scouts make their money. They need more hits than Motown.
ReplyDeleteNohl Williams, CB, Cal is another dude.
ReplyDeleteListening to Larry Krueger and John Lund discuss where the team is at - have to agree with Krueg's assessment. This team is not a Myles Garrett away from being SB champs imo. They have a heap of holes they need to fill.
ReplyDeleteI actually don't think they should be focusing on the SB this year. Definitely still aim for it, but put the focus of the offseason on adding guys that will keep them competing for SBs for the next 4-5 years.
Focus should be on making the team the best it can be for the 2025 campaign. They simply cannot afford any misses in this draft along the DL. They added Saleh and Gus to help Kocurek identify the pieces. If all it took to get Garrett was pick 11, a 4th and a 2nd next year, I'd do it.
Delete"They simply cannot afford any misses in this draft along the DL."
DeleteHistory suggests they won't get every pick right.
As for Garrett, it's not just the draft capital he costs you. It's the cap space. And if the team isn't in a position where they are a Garrett away right now it only gets harder to put that team together moving forward if you have a bunch of high priced guys and continually give away high draft picks.
I hate to say it, but the team is now in a position where they need to revitalise the roster, not one where they are just trying to keep pieces together with a few additions here and there.
Good news is that it doesn't have to be a long process. But they do need to draft well.
They gotta do better than they have. No more Jackson's, Beal's, Davis', etc. The three of those guys represent a shit ton of wide 9 experience.
Delete"The three of those guys" Saleh, Gus and Kocurek
DeleteFor me the trade for Garrett all hinges on whether or not he'd agree to play the year for 20 million without a new deal. If he is then the trade is a no brainer. If he's not, then obviously we're out.
DeleteTo me that is somewhat immaterial unless you believe the 49ers are a Garrett away from winning a SB this coming season.
DeleteGarrett with a well thought out and executed plan indeed puts them right back in the mix for a SB.
DeleteWhat is that plan?
DeleteBecause if it involves signing a bunch of good FAs along with Garrett then the 49ers will be in a massive salary cap bind as soon as next year, making this more a one year plan.
And if it is reliant on getting good starter level play from a bunch of rookies then it is a huge leap of faith, especially without a first round pick.
This isn't me saying the 49ers are no chance of getting back to the SB. They still have some very good players. But I do believe this is the weakest the team has looked heading into an offseason since 2019. And with the majority of their stars now entering or in the back end of their careers, plus injury concerns around many of them, going all in is a short term plan that will require a hard reset in the near future and likely some pretty ugly years.
I'm anxious to see the plan but whatever it is, I trust Lynch to give Shanahan what he believes he needs to get back in the playoffs. And when you get Shanahan in the playoffs, anything can happen.
DeleteAh now see, I agree the plan should be to put a roster together capable of giving them a chance. I just don't believe the plan should be to go all in on this year - too many things need to go perfect. And I don't think you add Garrett unless you're all in on this year.
DeleteIt's gonna be interesting to see who they target in F/A cuz I do think even if they don't make the big splash with Garrett, they'll add at least a dash of someone(s).
DeleteSame. I think they'll look to make at least one, maybe two splashy FA signings. But I think outside of that it will be mostly lower cost FAs to fill out the roster with value starters/ depth.
DeleteDonovan Ezeiruaku, Edge, BC reminds me of Yannick Ngakoue.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I was going to say Samson Ebukam with a bit more pass rush skill. I really like him as a prospect, he's a guy i'd be thrilled with in the 2nd.
DeleteJackson Hawes, TE, Georgia Tech reminds me of Charlie Woerner.
ReplyDeleteUpton Stout, CB, Western Kentucky reminds me of Amik Robertson.
ReplyDeleteChandler Martin, LB, Memphis is a sleeper.

2. SF: $204.1M
3. CLE: $187.5M

ReplyDeleteBaller. Not surprised to see he met with a lot of teams.
DeleteI feel really good about having Saleh, Gus and Kocurek in the draft room during a draft that's loaded defensively.
DeleteThere are some highly touted Olinemen that were selected in front of Puni that finished below him in overall rookie stats. This is a nice tribute to the 49ers regional scouts. Hopefully, they make more hits like this in April.
ReplyDeleteSuamataia was a huge whiff by the Chiefs.
DeleteI guess that's why scouting wasn't my calling. I was touting Suamataia for the 49ers this time last year, lol.

And some pro athletes just can't get out of their own way. I wonder how good FB Bruce Miller might have become.
ReplyDeleteBrowns Myles Garrett willing to re-work contract to move on from Cleveland to make it happen.
ReplyDeleteWhich I assume would mean delaying when the option bonus is due, not reducing what he's owed. And wouldn't preclude reworking a deal with his new team either.
