Another One Bites The Dust

Nick Sorensen will not return as 49ers defensive coordinator, per

  1. As with the other two units the defense sucked this year. I feel Sorensen was in over his head and it showed. Who will be the next Defensive Coordinator?

  2. Odds favor Jeff Ulbrich but I'd go after Pete Carroll. I don't think it could be another rookie DC. Has to be someone that commands the room day 1.

  3. Will Sorensen be the next ST coordinator? The problem with the 49ers special teams since KS became the HC might not be the coordinators it may be KS's attitude towards special teams in general. Harbaugh valued STs and he dedicated more roster spots on STs than KS has been willing to.

  4. The way the D finished the season this move felt inevitable. Good news is there are some good DC options out there. Saleh or Ulbrich would be fine by me if Shanahan is looking to maintain the existing system. The Jets defense has been pretty good the past few years under those two.

    1. I'm also hearing that Shanahan wasn't going to move on from Sorensen without knowing his preferred replacement would take the job.

  6. While many talking heads are clamoring for SF to go away from the wide 9 defense, I find it to be largely irrelevant. Primarily because it is not a scheme, and is largely associated with a 4-3 base defensive front.

The problem is Base defense is only run about 20% of the time in todays game, with Nickel or Big Nickel being run close to 60% of the time and dime being run about 20%. These numbers are based on a 2019 study and I doubt it has changed much.
Knowing this, I care far more about coverage philosophies and I hope SF focuses more on bringing in someone that runs a defense that is more similar to Flores or Macdonald... ie multiple fronts, w/ varied coverages.
A side benefit is Kyle struggles against this defensive style a lot. This will allow him to look at it daily and hopefully clean up some holes in his offense while better understanding the rules of these type of defenses.

    1. The wide 9 is a great defense when you have the talent you need to execute it. Two safeties and two lb's that fill the lane and make the tackle. A DL that has the depth to rotate without any significant dropoff. After Saleh left they began evolving the secondary to incorporate different coverages, and that's what led to selecting Green the highest they've ever drafted a DB.

      Delete
    2. If the 49ers bring in Saleh or Ulbrich, worth noting that they primarily play nickel, put an emphasis on talent at the DL and LBs (aligning with the 49ers philosophy) and emphasise rotating the DL (have stated a goal to have no DL play more than 35 snsps a game). But they also had an excellent CB trio.

      Delete
    3. That's what mean though. So many people care about base defense but in today's game the only less relevant defensive package is the goal line Package. How teams play nickel is the biggest determining factor of how good they are defensively.
Focusing on it it like patching the smallest hole in a boat first.

"Klay Kubiak will get a title promotion to 49ers offensive coordinator, coach Kyle Shanahan said."

    1. Kubiak's been on the fast track ever since he joined the 49ers. I suspect the 49ers are being proactive to ensure he can't be offered an OC role elsewhere.

    2. You gotta be pretty desperate to want to work under Trent Baalke. If Saleh takes that job his head coaching career is over.

    3. Scooter,
I think Ulbrich is looking for a DC job not a LB coaching position.

      Delete
    4. I meant if Saleh goes to Jags as HC. He'd be DC. Could lose 2 candidates in one go.

      Delete
    5. Saleh will get some head coaching interviews as he fills the minority interview criteria. I'm not saying he's not a worthy candidate I think he is, but when he fills a quota he will get some interviews when teams arent even really interested.
Personally I think the Jags need to go with an offensive minded coach given their investment in Lawrence.

  12. Kris Kocurek implemented a wide-9 alignment on the D-Line when he joined the 9ers in 2019.
The 9ers run a base 4-3 over and under front. In an over front the D-Line aligns to the strong or closed side of the offensive formation. An under front is the opposite. The D-Line will shift to the weak or open side of the formation.
A 9-technique is the strong-side DE or SAM playing the outside shoulder of the Y-receiver. A wide-9 is the same player about 2 or 3 yards off the Y-receiver.
LEO is the open or weak-side DE, and he'll usually be in a 5 or a 6 technique. The wide-9 wants to forces the opposing OT, or TE, into a 1-on-1 situation against an athletic edge rusher. A talented DE can collapse the B and C-gaps, forcing the running back to cut against the grain or back into the strength of the D and seal off a RB's escape route, allowing other defenders to make a tackle for a loss.
2 fast, agile edge defenders, playing from a wide-9 or a 6-technique force the opposition into a protection dilemma. Providing help for an
OT leaves the offense with 1 less receiver in a route and opens gaps in the O-Line, clearing 0-Line spaces for interior stunts.

The late Bill Arnsparger wrote, "it is mandatory that the defense be flexible and capable of presenting problems to the offense in developing blocking patterns and coverage variations. Mixing the three-and four-man line fronts allows the defense to create problems for the offense."
Saleh bought into this philosophy, and employed multiple variations and hybrid looks to his defensive line, using 3-man, 5-man, and double-A gap looks. He also flipped the edge positions around by moving the LEO to a wide-9 and played his strongside end heads-up on the Y-receiver, keeping the offensive line guessing and the QB shouting protection audibles and off balance, running from pressure.

    1. I think the wide 9 is fine... I just think focusing on the base D makes no sense when teams are in nickel almost 3x as much as base.
That said, SF had been one of the teams that stayed in base more than most due to the coverage abilities of Fred and Dre. I will be curious to see how the numbers shake out this past year with Dre being out so much.

  13. Steve Young said today if BP wants to set the market for QBs the 49ers should move on. If BP is willing to take less they should sign him. He compares the Dak Prescott situation with the Cowboys to the 9ers and BP.

    1. Based on Shanahan's comments in the press conference re the DC hire that seems highly unlikely. Shanahan basically said he's after someone with experience in the role.

  15. I slightly disagree with S. Young on his Dak, Purdy comment. Dak is 2-5 in playoff games. The 2 wins were both wildcard games. So, Prescott has never come close to sniffing a Superbowl. Purdy has accomplished much more in less seasons. He's more deserving than Dak to get paid. I only hope that Purdy doesn't ask for the moon.

While we can't get inside BP's head and know what he's thinking? As of now, he has been mature beyond his age. He hasn't tried to be the
center of attention, bean a diva that is difficult to please, or behave as if he's special and the most important player on the team! That lead me to believe he'll be reasonable in his contract demands?
    Scooter's breakdown for a $55 - $60 Mil P/Y contract now seems to
be reasonable. If BP's as intelligent as he appears to be, then it's also
likely he understands it's to his advantage to be surrounded with the
highly skilled players that can help him get to the post season and SB. But if he's greedy, the salary cap prevents if from happening and he'll never a SB, or the multi million dollar endorsements that come with winning a SB.
AND IF ANYONE SHOULD KNOW THAT, IT IS STEVE YOUNG!

  18. Good. While it never good to see someone fired, I think it is a step in the right direction to move on from Sorenson and Schneider.

    Thankfully meritocracy has prevailed.

We need an experienced DC. Saleh probably won't be available. I think Dennis Allen, Lou Anarumo are more likely.

  23. QUESTION; IN YOUR OPINION:
    * Is LB, Dre Greenlaw, the #1 free agent the 9ers must re-sign?
    * What is 9er FA Greenlaw's Market Value to sign a multi year contract with the 9ers? Is it $16 mil AAV for (5 years - $80 Mil)? * Should it be Less? Should it be more?
    * How much should be guaranteed money? $15 Mil?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think we saw this season that if the 49ers plan to play some semblance of their current defense they need two stud LBs (along with a good and deep DL).

If they let Greenlaw go they have to replace him.

At the same time though, he is now late 20s, plays violently, and is already suffering injuries. Big risk as to whether he'll remain available throughout a season.

Personally I wouldn't sign him for more than 3 years, preferably 2, ideally at no more than $12.5M a season (would make him 6th highest paid LB). And I'd make sure it's structured with playing time incentives - can go over $12.5M if you include some harder to reach incentives like pro bowl, all pro, etc.

      Delete
    2. I think the most likely scenario is Greenlaw returns on a one year prove it deal.

While i agree injuries will affect his Market Value, I think both the Rams and Washington will try to sign Greenlaw. The only question is how bad do the Rams want him & how much are they willing to pay to sign him? TBD?
As far as replacing him, I don't see a free agent LB that is
capable or replacing what he bring to the 9ers defense.

Rams projected to pursue 49ers $16 million free agent star
      * "The rival Rams should be heavily interested in Greenlaw given their need for help in the back seven. The (Washington Commanders) should also be interested as they look to continue building a contender in Washington. Greenlaw would be a particularly logical target if the Commanders don't re-sign Bobby Wagner in free agency. Potential Suitors: Los Angeles Rams, Washington Commanders."
