That is the question:
Source: #49ers All-Pro WR Brandon Aiyuk has officially requested a trade after an offseason of unsuccessful attempts to reach an extension.
Despite a recent meeting, the Niners haven’t been willing to engage in negotiations since May so Aiyuk has respectfully asked out.
Play on the 5th and show why you're worth 30 million and then we'll trade you next year and extend Deebo. Thanks for playing!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I heard Lombardi speaking on this earlier. Why trade AB when the 49ers could franchise him and then wait for the trading deadline to trade him to a WR needy team?
ReplyDeleteRazor/Scooter,
Is this a viable option?
Sure but I don't believe Lynch has any intention of trading Aiyuk this year. I think he's fine letting him play out his deal, tagging him next year and dealing him to the highest bidder. He's under contract at 14 million this year. The tag is irrelevant this year.
DeleteRazor
DeleteI agree with you...No reason to trade Aiyuk for the reasons you've posted.
IMO. it's time for JL to have a "come to Jesus talk" with Aiyuk.
Tell him he's not being traded this year, he will be paid $14.1 mil. if he plays and he will be fined if he doesn't! Remind him
he can be franchised next season and play for LESS than he
was already offered ($26 Mil.)
The only question I have is...If Aiyuk throws a temper tantrum and becomes a locker room distraction, can the 9er send him home and NOT pay him?
I'd call Jerry Rice into that meeting and he'd let Brandon know in no uncertain terms that he should take this opportunity to show the league why he's worth 30 million.
Deletesince 2019, Kyle Shanahan has owned his biggest rival, Sean McVay's Rams
ReplyDeletein games with starters, the 49ers are 9-1 (.900) and 8-2 ATS...
covering the spread by nearly 10 ppg
Matthew Stafford's has seen massive splits vs the 49ers in his regular season games:
he is 0-5 (.000) vs the 49ers
and 24-12 (.667) vs everyone else
vs 49ers: 5.9 YPA, 6:7 TD:INT, -0.03 EPA/att
all others: 8.0 YPA, 69:29 TD:INT, +0.12 EPA/att
McVay has something that Shanahan does not have and that burns me up, lol.
ReplyDeleteIf they can't reach an agreement I would trade him. The risk of s disgruntled player on the roster isn't worth it imo.
ReplyDeleteHe could have taken their offer of 26 million. No team is willing to pay him what he wants or he would've been moved during the draft
DeleteScooter. I've been thinking about this and I don't think it will be as bad as you think for two reasons: 1) Half-assed play by BA will only hurt his own stock in the future. 2) As far as I know, BA is not a leader in the clubhouse and those who are leaders will temper him if necessary.
DeleteHaving said that, I'm fine with the team trading BA but am not overly concerned about his disgruntlement - although clearly it would be better if he wasn't.
Let's hope he doesn't resort to doing pushups in his driveway.
DeleteScooter
DeleteIf the 9ers do trade Aiyuk now, What do expect they could get for him? IMO, not what he is worth...A 2nd Rd draft pick next year?
I'm not saying it will be a problem. I just don't think it is a risk worth taking if they genuinely have no intention of lifting their offer to Aiyuk.
DeleteThe cohesion of this team is a big part of what makes them so good.
GEEP, not sure, but I also think they could have issues getting what they think he is worth if they tag and trade at end of the season. They're so hard up against the cap and will need to pay Purdy that teams will know the 49ers have no intention of keeping him under the franchise tag.
DeleteI really don't think Lynch has any intention of trading him this year. This season will be an audition for his next team, and I see no reason why they can't tag him and trade him next year like the Chiefs did Snead. WR tag shouldn't be over 25 million. I could also see them extending Deebo next year too.
DeleteAgree re Deebo.
DeleteChiefs got a 3rd round pick for Sneed. That's what I suspect the 49ers could get if they take that route. Probably get more trading him now.
According to the NFL transaction wire, the San Francisco 49ers have placed rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, the team's first-round draft pick, on the active/non-football injury (NFI) list. Pearsall and the other 49ers' first-year players reported to training camp today. Veterans report on July 23.
ReplyDeleteGotta be something minor.
DeleteWR Ricky Pearsall update per Matt Barrows
Delete* Update: Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports that "Pearsall's injury is not considered serious."
Pearsall injured Aiyuk unhappy not the greatest start to a year. Anyone know why the 49ers have refused to negotiate since May? The 49ers have had a happy locker room for a long time now, is playing hardball with BA going to put an end to that?
ReplyDeleteWhy would that put an end to a happy locker room?
DeleteThey offered him 26 million and he turned it down, and he's under contract for 14 million.
With Brock needing to be paid (I think at the end of this coming season), can't just throw around money. Every million counts. IMO, $26 million is a fair market value for BA. I think BA is very good, but he doesn't experience the double teams that other #1 WRs do because of Kittle, Deebo and CMC. If he does get traded to a team with less talented WRs, I wouldn't be surprised at all if his numbers go down significantly.

Hearing the injury that landed #49ers WR Ricky Pearsall on NFI is not considered serious. SF’s rookies reported for training camp today
Dieter Kurtenback article (link below) makes a lot of sense. Basically Brandon and his agent are making him look like a bit of a head case and less attractive to other teams.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.mercurynews.com/2024/07/16/kurtenbach-brandon-aiyuks-trade-request-is-yet-another-unserious-move-by-the-49ers-star/
When you resort to making things messy because negotiations haven't gone your way it is very unprofessional.
DeleteThe NFL Trading deadline falls on Nov. 5th. That's almost 2 months into the football season.
ReplyDeleteIf a team loses a starting WR within this time Aiyuk could become very attractive. Perhaps a late 1st or early 2nd could be in the offing.
AES
ReplyDeleteJust out of curiosity, what do you think it would take for JL and the 9ers to trade Aiyuk?
NOTE: The 9ers DO NOT want to trade Aiyuk and it would take, in the
words of JL, "an offer that would blow us away!" What would that
offer be? IMO, a top 15 1st Rd draft pick in 2025 and likely a 3rd Rd
draft pick in 2026.
* Lets also consider the fact his 5th year salary ($14,124,000) would be his biggest payday. (2021 = $1,179,606), (2022 = $1,749,213), and he received (2023 = $2,318,819). So he doesn't have a big bank account to fall back on!
* He has no leverage, other than the fact the 9ers would like to keep
him, as his numbers are the best of the 9er WR's and BP wants him.
* If he holds out, he can be fined (no income) and with little money to
fall back on, how long can he last? (We all know the cost of living in
Silcon Valley)! And with a threat of the 9ers deciding to franchise him in 2025, he's broke, no income, and no where to go. Now what?
* If he decides to become a head case and locker room distraction, the only one he hurts is himself....What NFL team wants to trade for
a head case? He would only hurt himself and possibly destroy his career.
* And last, but not least, if the 9ers have to choose between paying BP and BA.......BA LOSES!
There is also the NFL Sunday Ticket lawsuit. While no one know
what the final outcome will be, the fact that each of the 32 teams could lose ~ $449.6 Mil. Has to be taken into consideration when
dealing with player contracts.
"If he decides to become a head case and locker room distraction, the only one he hurts is himself....What NFL team wants to trade for
Deletea head case? He would only hurt himself and possibly destroy his career." GEEP, Thanks for always posing the right questions. But, your above statement could very well force the 49ers hand if AB becomes a locker room distraction. This kind of attitude hasn't been a part of the 49ers under the Shanahan/Lynch regime and I doubt that they would allow this going forward. Also, I'm not so sure about teams being weary of a players reputation given the fact that teams have signed guys like T.O. and Antonio Brown and others with less than stellar reputations. A team would not be doing their due dilligence to ignore a player like Aiyuk even with a bad attitude, imho.
AES
Delete"But, your above statement could very well force the 49ers hand if AB becomes a locker room distraction."
* Not sure HOW AB becomes a "locker room distraction," if he
refuses to report and refuses to play when he's contractually
obligated to? I guess he could go on TV and complain, but I
doubt that would move the 9ers to trade him.
* And If he becomes too obnoxious in the locker room, I suspect someone would have a conversation with him and say thing he doesn't want to hear, CAN"T ignore, or misunderstand. And if he becomes physical, he could run afoul of the NFL Personal Conduct Policy.....
IMHO, he's got 2 moves! Play and prove he is worth what he
thinks he is worth, or sit out and lose $$$$ millions.
Aiyuk is not want for talent. Whether he sulks with the 49ers or is traded he is going to get paid. I believe that he's already proved his worth and would be a major factor on any that doesn't have Deebo, CMC, and Kittle on their roster. I still believe that both parties will agree to something satisfactory. Deebo faded in the SB and his dynamic style of play seems to have peeked. I would be surprised if Aiyuk is gone before Deebo.
DeleteI think BA's strongest attribute is being under played. That is his rapport with Purdy. BA seems to have become Purdy's go to guy. I think that Pearsall's skill set may replace BAs but the kind of Rapport that he and Purdy have developed could be irreplaceable. I get the feeling that if we could ask Purdy he would tell us that more than any other receiver he wants BA on that line.

Delete"Aiyuk is not want for talent. Whether he sulks with the 49ers or is traded he is going to get paid."
* AES I agree with you, Aiyuk is talented and he will get paid!
Just NOT what he wants to be paid! He'll be paid $14.1 mil for
2024 season and very likely ~$25 to $26 mil for 2025 season.
(If the 9ers use franchise tag on him).
* So as I said in a previous post, he's got 2 moves! Play and prove he is worth what he thinks he is worth, or sit out and lose $$$$ millions for 2024 season and get paid less than he has
already turned down ($26 Mil.) for the 2025 season!
I do NOT see the 9ers paying him $30 Mil. and I do NOT see
the 9ers trading him this season! DO YOU?
The 49ers have said that they want Aiyuk on the team. I happen to believe that AB has proven himself over the last two seasons and is still an ascending player. And if AB has another good year the 49ers could put themselves in a position where they will look at paying more than 30mil. Of course another team will come in at 33-35mil. The 49ers could likely unload top heavy contracts next year when several players become FAs. Which could make giving AB something close to what he's asking a little more doable.
DeleteTBD
AES
Delete"TBD!" Yep, I can't argue against that.....lol....
Lol! This topic definitely has it's opinion of pros and cons.
DeleteWe'll have wait on how this shakes out.
Nobody is paying Aiyuk 33 million next year. At some point teams are gonna realize that they can find a really good wr in the draft thanks to the talent that the NCAA puts out every year. That's not the case with OL or LB where players coming out aren't ready for the intricasies of the NFL.
DeleteAre you so sure that teams won't pay a WR whose led his talent laden team in receptions and yards? If he's still here this season, I have no reason to doubt that AB will lead the team in catches and yards again. And if he does this again - 33mil will be a bargain.
DeleteYea, he's really good but lets see how good he is when he's consistently double teamed. I don't see a team paying him 30 mill cuz they could have done it during the draft.
